Very disappointed. I live close and the food came extremely cold. I was also missing my dressing for my SALAD! I called them to find out what happened and the lady on the phone insinuated my delivery driver stole my dressing. Then, instead of a solution, she said to call the service that delivered it to get a refund. I was shocked. This is a restaurant issue, not the delivery service. Great casual classic neighborhood bar and grill in Roscoe Village for breakfast, lunch, and any time you feel like. It also has a small bar with cocktails, but the food is the main thing it seems. John's Place has more casual cuisine, but it's not afraid to get fancy as well. Fairly good prices on most items. There's burgers and that type of thing, as well as a few vegetarian choices to give everyone an option. A lot quieter than we thought it would be the last time here. It was still kind of early, but there were only a couple others. This place gets packed for brunch on weekends. Other times it's much easier to get in. We got lunch. It's about $8 for a basic cocktail. That's not bad for the hipster area it's in. As for the food, we each got the Build Your Own Burger. It's $13, and add another buck to make it an Impossible Burger. This was a good sized burger, and it came with a side. Even though some things here can be expensive, it's pretty okay compared to other places around it. If looking for a weekend brunch spot, this is a popular one. I've been looking for a new neighborhood place. My usual place has prices that have shot up 40% and service that is now nonexistent. I was pumped to try a new place and let me tell you, I was pleasantly surprised. Service was good but the food was fantastic. You'd be surprised by how many places will serve you cold food and don't blink an eye. You won't experience that here. A hot meal, hot potatoes, hot coffee, hot eggs, hot everything. It screams fresh and made to order. Would I do it again, yes. Many times over. A few blocks away someone stopped me and asked if I knew of a decent breakfast nearby. I took a good friend yesterday to John's Place based on a suggestion from a co worker. It was excellent! My guest ordered the salmon, teriyaki that night, and I had the chicken peanut bowl. Both were very creatively sauced with a complex and enjoyable collection of spices and flavors. I was say they were equally complex and delicious. It's a smaller place but the service was impeccable, the waiter, the bus staff, even John himself! They all had an amazing attention to detail. It is rare that I wake up the morning after such a meal anxiously waiting to dig into leftovers, but this time I did. John's Place will certainly go into heavy rotation for me this year. read more

We had brunch here on Sunday. We arrived just after they opened and were seated right away. The place filled up quickly. We started with a couple bloody Mary's. I thought they were just okay. They were a little thin with not a lot of tomato flavor. The spice level was good; I asked for spicy. I had one of the specials. It was two pulled pork enchiladas with two over easy eggs on top. When we went there were two toddlers doing what toddlers usually do-which is make a mess and our server took it in stride and definitely gave off a 'cool with it' vibe. I've been to John's Pmace twice because it's one of T's go to places for the Cobb or Southwest salads. For me it's the burgers. Food is always very good and service is friendly and attentive. The Greek salads had lots of lettuce but not much else. Expensive and mediocre. The service was good. The atmosphere I cannot rate as we had lunch outside and no one else was outside. Really enjoy coming to John's place! Have been here multiple times before a Cubs game and I have never been disappointed. On my last visit for brunch I finally got to try their chicken & poblano hash which was amazing!!! I highly recommend it if you like the poblano pepper taste. It was basically shredded chicken, diced poblano and onions along with potatoes. Sounds simple but it is pretty good! My friend got the special of the day which was a salmon omelette which he truly enjoyed. We started off with the "silly good donuts" which is basically what the name says... silly good donuts! Good sweet appetizer to share and truly indulge in your brunch. Coffee is also really good since they use Intelligentsia coffee. The bill for 2 of us came down to about $45 which for the Roscoe Village area is not bad at all! TIP: On tuesday's it looks like they have some sort of $5 burger/fries deal! I'm in walking distance, but don't often order from them. The food is good enough, but their prices seem higher for similar menu items in the neighborhood. Their brunch is definitely great. They've started doing weekly family meal nights though. My wife and I sprung for the Greek Fest last night, $50 for 2 servings. There was a Greek salad, pita, cold apps like hummus + olives + a few mixed vegs, 3 small chicken and veg kabobs, a generous portion of pastitsio, and some baklava to finish. All of it was worthy of a Greek restaurant. Pickup was easy - well packaged in a large bag by the front door, and you schedule a pickup window. It was a little tepid (as expected for a huge meal prep), but we warmed the pastitsio in the oven while we tackled the rest and it worked out well. Well done John's Place! We'll be back. read more

I've been here numerous times throughout the years and I can't figure out why it's always so busy?! I have thought in the past that the food was bland and lacked flavor. I decided I'd try it again to give it another chance... and ordered a turkey sandwich. Um... deli turkey - and not good deli turkey (I am not a deli meat snob), but this seemed to resemble the prepackaged turkey that's shaped into a scalloped round. It was flavorless... redeeming the sandwich was guacamole and sweet potato fries... I would have done better with the grocery store for turkey. I tried a bite of the tuna melt which was not bad, but honestly, not impressed with the turkey... Service was friendly and efficient. Some days it seems like my life is one long quest for fresh and tasty vegetarian-friendly dishes that'll put a smile on my face. The plate of John's veggie hash I ordered was incredible. However, the oatmeal pancakes my wife ordered were Devine! After enjoying every bite of my hash, my wife let me taste her pancakes...and I was hooked. She actually had to smack my fork away from her plate so she could finish her brunch. We got there pretty late by brunch standards (around 2pm on a Saturday) so we were able to avoid the crowds and lots of small children that frequent John's Place. We love John's place. It is our local neighborhood spot we hit up very often and service and food is consistently solid. We have two young kids and John's place welcomes that and accommodates an environment that supports the chaos that kids bring without making you feel uncomfortable. We most always see John the owner when we go, and he is nothing but kind and funny. The folks that work here seem to enjoy their job, and genuinely enjoy being there. I tend to come during brunch because I'm obsessed with their options and my kids are up at 6:15; second breakfast helps the day go by well for all involved. I love this place and will continue to frequent! You should too! Side note and something worth mentioning is that one time I visited, I accidentally left a very expensive purse, that I didn't even realize I left until they did some diligence and found my husbands number. The guac and homemade chips were great (can you mess up guac though) but was overpriced. Guac was $10 for 2 scoops of and a handful of chips. I did not like the tacos. The slaw was beneath the fish, which is odd, and I did not like the slaw. There was something too sweet, probably the carrots, that did not pair well with the fish. The black beans and rice was like Texas Roadhouse/zatarains. Although the service was amazing! We went with a group of 6 and they were super with moving tables and splitting the check. After an evening of beer drinking and jousting at the Oyster Fest, I wandered into John's Place with some friends since they were one of the last locations that had oysters left. The place was packed as well as the outdoor seating areas, but it was a great atmosphere. I had a great waitress who quickly ushered us out an order of a half dozen oysters and she even tolerated my annoying Brother, whose jokes can be funny but slightly offensive/creepish! I didnt like that they didnt have melted butter for the oysters, but, oh well! I love them though because I actually ended up leaving my tablet here by mistake (well, my Brother did) and John actually took it and kept it for us! Our waitress was super sweet. But our entrees were brought to a different table. The table didn't think they were there's but in the meantime picked at the food and French fries. After they told the staff, they brought them to the kitchen. Two minutes later the brought the exact same dishes to us. The chicken sandwich was picked at and the fries were eaten. The waitress ordered us new food at free charge and took the appetizer off of the tab. While we were looking over the menu a tall guy with a red scarf tossed around his neck popped around the corner carrying a box and asked if we were looking for recommendations. He then pointed out several establishments on the street and then asked if we'd liked what we saw on the menu here. My wife said she was looking for more of a bakery or place to grab something to go since we just wanted a snack and not a meal. He then said "well, this is my place, come on in and have a snack!" She replied, "That's okay with you that we don't get a whole meal?" He smiled and said "Of course! Get what you'd like!" We were of course sold by his geniality, but also that he took the time to point out other establishments before his own, genuinely just trying to help us find what we need. That's the kind of hospitality and community spirit that we love! Hey I really hate sharing bad reviews because I worked in the industry for so long- but I can't deny that the food here was bad... like really bad. My boyfriend and I were really excited to go to brunch and John's place was close and looked promising so we tried it out... unfortunately everything we got was disappointing. I had the avocado toast which was literally just guacamole they put on a piece of warm sliced bread and it was soggy before i even took my first bite and they charged like 13$ for it.. i was so hungry I sent it back and thought i'd be safe ordering a short stack of pancakes but one of them was so underdone it was still batter on the inside. I was incredibly hungover and I promise you not looking for anything fancy but this food wasn't even edible. Maybe it's better for lunch or regular bar food... all I know is that I will never be going back here. I'm really sorry to the owners and staff for posting something so negative but your kitchen needs to produce higher quality food especially for the prices you charge. Friendly waitstaff and sweet atmosphere, if you can get better drinks- maybe try a homemade bloody mary instead of the mix, that could improve the quality of the experience but nothing we had was fresh or good. read more
