Fish City Grill was good, just not quite what I was looking for. The food was well-prepared, the restaurant was clean, and the service was solid. There really wasn't anything wrong with the experience. It just didn't wow me. I think part of it comes down to personal preference. When it comes to seafood, I tend to gravitate toward places that are a little more casual, bold, and focused on big flavors. Fish City Grill felt a bit more refined and "frou-frou" than what I usually enjoy. That doesn't mean the food wasn't good; it was. It just wasn't the style of seafood that gets me excited. Everything was competent and enjoyable, but nothing stood out as particularly memorable. If you're looking for a cleaner, more polished seafood experience, you'll probably enjoy it. Last night, we had dinner at @fishcitygrill Northwoods. Melissa was our attentive server. It was a busy night for a Monday. Dad and Hubby shared a bowl of clam chowder. Hubby and I shared the House Salad. We all shared a dozen of the Mystic Mermaid Oysters on happy hour. For my entrée, I had the Shrimp Piccata Pasta. Very yummy! The food was great as always. The tuna tartare tasted fresh and the wonton chips were warm and crispy. The calamari was also delicious and paired with a nice sweet chili sauce. We asked to sit outside since it was nice day but we waited over 10 minutes and nobody attended to us so we decided to go inside and address the wait staff. It has been a couple of years since I've last tried this restaurant that has never disappointed only disappointed I haven't been back there sooner. The fried seafood plate was very well prepared and crunchy but soft at the same time, very delicately fried and prepared to perfection. Not at all like most other fried seafood chain restaurants. You could tell it is all prepared on the spot and not reheated and it comes out so quick and delicious! The only side I had a hard time eating was the extremely seasoned Cajun rice with sausage and chicken that felt very much reheated and over seasoned in contrast to the rest of the food. The rest of the food was very good! We all enjoyed most of our food as well as the service. The server was very attentive and friendly. Ambiance was quiet but casual. Arrived to a full house, and some patrons dining outside in 50 degree weather under large outdoor heaters. Told it'd be 30 minute wait and chose to stand by bar instead of waiting outside or in the car. All bar seats taken. Bartenders didn't tend to me. Chris, the manager on duty offered to get me a drink. I addressed the situation with him. Wait was actually 15-20 minutes and Melissa provided great table service inside. If you're gonna get anything on the menu, I highly recommend the shrimp tacos! This is my first time coming to fish city Grill since it opened in San Antonio, and the atmosphere was nice, clean, and the staff was very friendly. The fish tacos were Delicious, the perfect amount of spicy and sweet. It came with a side of beans and rice, which were pretty good as well. Well. This is basically your reasonably upscale Gulf Coast seafood restaurant, with pretty good food and good service. The menu is mostly "light" fish - haddock, tilapia, scallops, and shrimp - and despite the name of the restaurant, most of the menu is fried or pan-seared or gumbo-ish, rather than literally grilled. There's a little rainbow trout and salmon on the menu, but if you're looking for darker, lustier-flavored fish this isn't the place for you. That said, our table had rolled fish tacos, beer-battered haddock tacos (a daily special) and fish & chips. The tacos were made interesting by their add-ins - tangy slaw with Fresno peppers, marinades and sauces including house-made tartar sauce. Portions are large, and we saw doggy bags making their way out the door. Server Sean was attentive and had suggestions for us, and I was impressed that if a table needed bussing or cleaning, or waters needed refilling, then whichever staff member was closest pitched in. No " that's not my job" from this crew. Draft and bottled beer and wine selections are not large but are wide-ranging. There's likely to be something for everybody. To start service was awful. It started after we waited for 40 mins to be seated after being told 20. Looking and seeing 5 empty tables. I asked the front of the house when could we expect to be seated and it was appears they had lost our place on the tablet. We were seated soon after. Then the wait staff hardly showed up to our table. After waiting for at least 30 Mins after we were finished, I had to ask management for a check as we had been forgotten about. They always had amazing specials and a wide variety of choices...enough that I would go several times each weekend to taste all their blackboard offerings. Well the new year brought an unpleasant change. Apparently new ownership. They've gutted the casual feeling. They gutted the blackboard offerings. They gutted the ambience. It's now Red Lobster. The employees look miserable in their new costumes. Stuffy and pretentious is the vibe. My favorite restaurant will now be replaced. Everything I loved about them is gone. 2 stars for service for our particular server. Saturday night. Hostess let us know in advance that they were busy which was appreciated. Ambiance was bustling, busy, great We ordered the shrimp tacos, half dz Mystic Mermaid oysters on the half shell, Diet Coke and a glass of Pinot Grigio. When the waters came, we added fries. He asked if I wanted them to come out before or with the rest of the meal. I said whenever it is ready would be just fine. Food took 25-35 minutes. Fine, we were told in advance they're busy. Main courses finally arrived, it was quite good. Tacos had a nice kick, good flavor fusion and oysters were fresh and great. I never got my wine and I never got my fries. When reminded of the fries when the tacos and oysters arrived, Server said "totally my bad, I JUST put the fries in." After about 10 minutes eating, he came to check on us for a Diet Coke refill which had been empty for awhile and asked if we were ready for the check. An off night. I always order the same thing at Fish City Grill and tonight 1/14/24 my dish was just off. The catfish was unseasoned and watery; not the fresh, sweet, taste that I was used to. The cheese grits tasted like they were cooked in chicken broth and over seasoned. Even the spinach was charred and bitter. My friend enjoyed his grilled chicken and andouille sausage with red beans and rice however. Fortunately service, from Bailey was great. She took notice of my half eaten plate and asked about it. I admitted it was not very good. She adjusted the bill which was a welcome acknowledgment. My other complaint is that the restrooms have a very strong deodorizer which kept wafting out through the doors. Better than a bad smell for sure but not a good mix when trying to eat.
