I haven't eaten for a few days due to an upset tooth but this place is worthy of chewing on one side. Started with a complimentary swamp soup that contained collards ham and beans. It was fantastic and a soothing petit bouche. I was ready to eat! Next, their 1/2 1/2 platter of shrimp, oysters, fries, okra, hushpuppies and slaw. Their oysters were some of the best cornmeal oysters ever. Hushpuppies airy, and slaw creamy good with carrot and green onions. Tartar brought to the table was homemade and chilled. My waitress Sierra P was super nice and accommodating with a few special requests providing excellent service. The open dining wasn't too noisy and there's a fun "watering" hole area that is swampy cute themed. Lots of tourists here today and locals taking a break from the ballpark! This was a recommendation from a family member living in the area. The staff is very friendly and not afraid to give a little good natured sass back! When you dine in, they start with "swamp soup". I really don't know what was in it but it's one of my favorites now. Almost like a wedding soup in flavor. You also get a piece of moist chocolate cake with some white icing on top. A great way to end the meal. The table ordered gator bites and fried green tomatoes for appetizers. Both were very good, but I enjoyed the gator bites more. There was a lot of salt on it so beware. I had the River Sausage Po'Boy for my entree. This is a sausage hoagie loaded with sauerkraut, onions, peppers, and mustard. The sausage is not spicy and is a lot to eat but I somehow managed. They have a shrimp po-boy covered with OMG sauce, which is basically a shrimp/crawfish etouffee. The hush puppies, slaw and fried okra are good. Great tea for rehydrating at the end of the day. I used to not care for going here but I do like it now. The service is always very friendly. Waitresses you can cut up with. There something on the menu for everyone. I think one of the local rags even voted they had the best burger. The Cajun Pistols are good too. (Etouffee stuffed breadsticks) You got to try those too. The first time we went years ago and were given their sample of swamp soup, we started ordering it by the 1/2 gallon especially during the cooler months and eating it with cornbread for a couple of days. I took my kids and grandkids there tonight and we spent quite a bit of money as you'd imagine for 6 adults and 2 children. I was so impressed with our server I'm sorry I don't remember her name but she served us in the corner in the bar area. She was one of the best servers i have ever had and we frequent some very high end restaurants. Every request was met with nothing but smiles and charm. My wife and I have eaten here several times and the food has always been top quality and the amount for the price cannot be beat! The swamp soup is phenomenal. The restaurant itself is very quaint and feels like you are in New Orleans but you are in a strip mall in OB Alabama. Some of the highlights were the PoBoys....any of them......just pick one......they are all great. The bread is true blue French bread from NO. I will eat here every time we come back to visit. I will recommend this fantastic place to any who ask and everyone I meet headed this way. To the server I'm sorry I forgot your name but you are one of the best thank you so much for making that dinner one of the best of our trip. This place was disgusting. The waitress was new and literally asked me if she was making the drinks right or if she rang up or dinner right. She did not do either of them correctly but these were the least of our worries. The plates were GROSS, plastic with the paint melting off. The shrimp was questionable, the hushpuppies were good- we got sick by the time we got home. My salad had no cheese, was a bunch of past ripe different lettuces and she charged me for a house salad... we didn't care to pay to just get out of there. Last but not least my Amaretto Sour had absolutely no alcohol in it, she told us she had to look up how to make it. Not really sure why the bartender wasn't making the drinks. The girl was really trying and we didnt want to be rude to her but seriously this place is NOT GOOD and the only reason they're open is because you only have to go once in a beach town... some other sorry fool will show up tomorrow. Save your time and your stomachs. { The decor was all thrown together, nothing matched and had obviously not even been dusted in quite some time. The chairs were church chairs... The least they could do is buy some decent dining* chairs. } Last but not least another server was cleaning a table next to us, our server grabbed HUGE bottles of tartar sauce and cocktail sauce from another table and set it directly on our table. We met our daughter and son-in-law here for dinner on a Tuesday evening and it was really good. We had fried pickle basket as an appetizer and they were great. I had the fried shrimp po-boy and it was delicious. There were plenty of shrimp in the po-boy and the sauce was great! My wife had the grilled white fish and she said it was delicious as well. We followed that up with the NOLA, gumbo, and the Sweet Thang; oh my :) I will admit that I do not normally order fried shrimp, BUT I will the next time we visit; they were on the Beast and on my NOLA; they are amazing ! We have eaten here several times and at their other locations as well. Their swamp soup is fabulous. I could have that as a meal for sure. The swamp burger is a masterpiece! If I had to choose only one burger to eat the rest of my life, this is one to consider long and hard. My wife and I are both burger fans. Not those ostentatious gourmet progressive burgers. Up until I bit into my sandwich, the experience wasn't bad. Server was very polite and attentive. The swamp soup was also tasty. Now for the rough part. Something on my Poboy was rancid. I suspect the tomato's were to blame. My first bite tasted like old moldy mop water. That's the best way I know to describe it. I immediately spit the bite back out and had to go to the restroom to empty the contents on my stomach. I've never had such an abrupt reaction to eating something. Now, for the worst part. I took one bite of my entree and it was clearly spit back out. I sent it back and told the server I didn't want another because by now, my stomach was in knots. They did NOT take it off my bill. They gave me a $3.00 discount on my uneaten, rancid meal. I've worked in food service in my past and I understand that things happen. I have no issue with that. If they'd have just taken it off my bill and used a little common sense, I wouldn't be leaving this review.
