Last week when in Pensacola we ate at our go to seafood joint in town on Cervantes where we always get the fried mullet appetizer. But I decided to try their fried shrimp and added the fried shrimp app (five shrimp) to the order. We were amazed. I wrote here on Yelp that this rivals an unnamed restaurant that promises, "The best fried shrimp in the entire civilized world". Well I tried it a second time a couple days later. Meh. And then a third time. Better but still not as good as the first time. So, today we hit Doc's. OK, this is without question indisputably THE BEST FRIED SHRIMP IN THE ENTIRE CIVILIZED WORLD. Perfectly battered, perfectly fried and succulently juicy and moist. This is the gold standard. The consistency over the many years we have enjoyed it is insane. How does a kitchen do this? I dunno. But they do. We order the shrimp a la carte. No sides. A dozen each, except today I had six and a fried soft shell crab a la carte that was spectacular. We love this joint. read more

This small hole in the wall has an excellent wait staff. It gets slammed so recommend going a bit early. We were seated in the back in the corner when we arrived early. It's the food folks go there for. The oysters were fresh and served in a simple appealing way. The fish was white and firm and delicious. The grilled shrimp they are famous for do not have a savory flavor, tastes more like they were grilled with honey on them. We were not expecting that at all. We did not like the 30 dollars worth of sweet shrimp. It does come in very generous portion if you like that type of flavor. Hush puppies were pretty darn good, light, nicely seasoned with good flavor. The Cole slaw was excellent. All portions were generous. Overall they are friendly, the service is personable and efficient! Ambiance is that of a local diner style, not fancy just comfortable. We liked everything but the sweet grilled shrimp. We are from the north and maybe it is just a southern style we aren't familiar with or used to consuming. The gumbo is pretty good too. They have great mixed drinks and they have one that is a salted caramel flavor that is really excellent. Overall: would highly recommend for a good meal and friendly service. It's been a long time since I was this disappointed in a restaurant that I was looking forward to eating at. Doc's earns two stars solely for the service, because our server was genuinely excellent. My dad and I both ordered the fried shrimp and fried oyster combo--he chose fries, and coleslaw, I went with okra and coleslaw. We received a tablespoon of coleslaw, and the seafood was a real disappointment. Nothing about the shrimp or oysters suggested Gulf of America freshness; they had the look and flavor of Capt. You just know when you walk into a place like this with a plain interior and cracked leather chairs it's going to be good. We came in on a Friday afternoon for a lunch after coming across Yelp reviews while in search of a local place with fried oysters and fried shrimp. The claim to be the "best friend shrimp in the entire civilized world" is a big one, so of course it needed to be tested. I'm not a seafood eater, but my husband and in laws believe they have earned the right to make that claim. I ordered the Island Chicken and added a side of okra. So good! I loved the fries and their hush puppies. The ranch I used to dip my fries in was tasty too! My husband and in laws all ordered a variation of the create your own platter with fried shrimp, fried oysters, and crab cakes. My MIL says she rarely eats cole slaw because she's always been picky about it but she LOVED hers here. She even made sure I got a to go box to take the portion I didn't eat with me. She's been wanting fried oysters since they got their condo earlier this week and said the ones she had here did not disappoint. My husband loved that he could add a cup of gumbo onto his fried platter for only $3. I asked everyone for their meal rating since I don't feel I can rate a restaurant that primarily serves seafood solo because I don't eat it. Everyone said they deserve the full 5 stars, except my father-in-law who said the dessert makes it a 10! I had a key lime pie while they ordered the banana. Everything was great! My only regret is that no one had enough room to even attempt to try a world-famous bushwhacker. Sadly, we leave after this weekend to go back home. I've also tried their baked shrimp, grilled shrimp, crab cakes, and baked fish. The crabcakes come with a delicious sauce. The baked shrimp taste reminacent of shrimp scampi with all the buttery goodness! Fries are cooked to perfection. One thing to note: you make your own cocktail sauce here, all the ingredients are available at the table. Drinks are good, you can get them in a souvenir cup as well! Be sure to go early. They don't take reservations. We (11 top) went on a Tuesday evening showed up at 5 o'clock and had a 30 minute wait but was able to hang out at the bar. Everyone was very friendly and it was comfortable. The food is delicious. We started with the world's best seasoned gumbo, which was great. I wish I ordered a bowl instead of a cup. Still hungry from lunch today, we decided to visit Docs late this evening. Pulled in to a crowded parking lot and people standing around outside waiting for a table. The Mrs and I walked in and immediately sat at a completely empty bar. Ordered two beers and some food. We had our food before even having a second sip of beer. We had the famous gumbo and the world famous fried shrimp and ohhhh was it sooo good. Gumbo was spot on and excellent. Shrimp was hot, fresh, and wonderful. We had plenty and was able to split an entree and had plenty to take home for later. We were already eating while the same folks were still waiting for a table. If you don't mind the bar, that's definitely the place to sit. Our bartender/server was on top of things and very attentive and friendly. Wish I had gotten his name but he had on a red shirt tonight. There are two locations, we went to the Shack on Canal. Was very friendly and welcoming. The service was excellent and a casual, comfortable family restaurant. I "built my own" plate with fish, "the best" shrimp and oysters which were also delicious! Food was hoy and plentiful! (Cole slaw and potatoes). I loved the potatoes and slaw was perfect! My husband got the crab claws which were piled high and he enjoyed. We both got a drink, wasn't the best. We were hoping it was better than our hotel pool bar, wasn't. Every time we visit the area, we are sure to have dinner at Doc's. There are two, and we've only been to the one on Canal which is the original, and rather than explore the other, we stick to what we know. It's a dumpy not-so-little place at the corner of a busy intersection which makes in/out and parking a mess, but it's SO worth it. As usual, we all started with a cup of gumbo, as we love theirs. Son had grilled Mahi because he's not a huge seafood lover but the 'steak fish' types are ok for him. If only I could convince him to explore the menu more and try some other things, I think he'd love them. Wife had grilled shrimp skewers and I had the fried fish and clams. Normally I do the ridiculous huge seafood platter but I was trying to be 'good' - my pledge was to have more grilled less fried. So downsizing to two items was my self-compromise! All the sides were good, portions huge. Their okra is always great. Doc's is ALWAYS going to be crowded, but this was a rare time we didn't have to wait to get in. Service was prompt and friendly and once again the whole experience didn't disappoint! We've been coming to the area for years, and Doc's is one of the few places that has the 'every single time' designation and has never been moved for something different. This restaurant. This location specifically. A must try if in the Gulf Shores/Orange Beach area. Each weekday a specific Blue Plate lunch special is offered from 11am-2pm. Lots of food for a really good price. I really don't think you could go wrong with anything here at Doc's. Basically anything fried is going to be delicious. Their batter used, is a coating that is next level compared to other restaurants in the area. We went to Doc's as we have hundreds of times. Each and every time, it just does not disappoint. It's a typical local seafood restaurant with a rustic vibe, but you go to Docs for the food and service. We ordered the Gumbo and the bar is set for Gumbo....okra based and full of delicious ingredients, it truly is the epitome of Gumbo. And we decided on the Crab Claws, and again, fresh claws that were utterly fantastic and what crab claws should be. Top it off with great service, and you get the Gulf Of Mexico's finest seafood and an epic dining experience right in our back yard. Never again! First they were rude on the phone when we called to ask about the current wait for dinner. Then rude again when we arrived and checked in. 30 minute wait for outside, 1 hour for inside, so we opted for outside - it's a large covered area with plenty of fans. We were seated in less than 30 minutes, and placed our order pretty quickly. Not wanting to pay over $40 for 12 shrimp, I got the shrimp/oyster poboy and my husband ordered the "lobster roll". Shortly after we placed our orders, the very loud live music began, and we realized - a little too late- that we were seated right next to the speakers. So conversation was not possible, and my husband was getting warnings on his watch that the environment was too loud for him. Our food finally arrived, and neither of us could believe how pitiful the lobster roll looked. It was not really a lobster roll at all. It was more some sort of salad and sauce that might have contained some flakes of lobster. He found it practically inedible, but didn't want to go through sending it back for something else, as we just wanted to get out of there. My sandwich was good, with lots of shrimp and oysters- quite a contrast to the pathetic looking lobster roll. We find it surprising that they get so many customers. We will not be returning. There are plenty of places to get good seafood in a better atmosphere without the exorbitant prices. read more

The Doc's gumbo has to be top 5 on the Alabama coast and the wait staff is friendly and very knowledgeable about their menu. It's tight quarters but kinda gives it the seafood shack vibe. The Bushwhacker is a must and again top 5. My only complaint would be they use Swai for their fried fish. Being on the Alabama coast you might think they could use a gulf fresh fish or a farm fresh catfish. read more

They suggested we order at the bar- which we did not do. They did eventually seat us and we had a good server who answered any question we had. Limited beer supply. No craft beer. Margherita was good but both drinks were served in plastic cups. Not a fan. Fried shrimp ( their speciality) was good. But their fried onion rings were the best I've ever had. Not greasy. We had such a great time here. The service was awesome. When we walked in the lobby was busy and most, if not all, tables were full. We found two seats at the "bar" area and popped a squat. This was an excelled decision as we had people constantly checking in on us. THE FOOD!!! The ordered: Gumbo, fried shrimp, and a platter with catfish, fried oysters and stuffed crab. I didn't care for the stuffed crab, mostly because of the texture but my hubby loved them. The fried shrimp was excellent. Next time I will make sure to get more shrimp. What has happened to the place I loved, not too long ago you would receive a piece of pound cake with the purchase of a lunch special, the last 2 times I have been I have not received one. The service, and food had been great, so I cannot bash them for that, but prices are too high for the small portions, and stopping one of the best parts of the experience has really knocked docs down a couple stars for me. read more

I can honestly say, they live up to this statement. I live in Houston, Texas where good seafood is abundant and I vacation in Pensacola, Florida every year where I have enjoyed some very tasty shrimp meals. I've never had fried shrimp like this! We wanted to try a little of everything, so we opted for the seafood platter and started with the fried onion rings as an appetizer. They could honestly changed their restaurant slogan to include best damn onion rings, best damn gumbo, and best damn fried shrimp! I would recommend the fried shrimp platter and skip the seafood platter. The fried crab was good, the coleslaw was good, the catfish was okay (I'm not a big fan of catfish) and the fried oysters were okay (also not a fan of fried oysters), but the shrimp takes the blue ribbon! Perfectly battered, large shrimp with tasty tartar sauce. It was delicious! The portions are large enough to split. I didn't count, but there had to be at least 10 large onion rings in our order. They serve them with homemade ranch. We were very satisfied and full after our lunch. They have indoor and outdoor seating. One thing to note if you choose outdoor seating, do not sit by the windows that look into the interior. The door between the inside and outside slams and shakes the windows which was distracting. It didn't ruin my lunch, but it is something to note. Parking is close by, but the parking lot is somewhat small when they are crowded. Orange Beach, Alabama is a beautiful area to visit. We made the short drive from Pensacola, Florida. They probably have several great restaurants but this one is definitely a spot you don't want to miss! read more
