If you want to eat where the local go, head to the Fish Shack! It is owned by a family that has been in the fish business for 20 years. If you didn't know where it is you might be hard to pressed to find it. Thankfully I had Julie F. to guide me in. The last time I tried to go in February I couldn't get a parking spot. When I finally found a place to park i couldn't get near the door. I left frustrated and hungry. Thankfully this time was very different. At 6:45 on a summer weekday we were able to park inches from the door and walk in and have our choice of seating which is one bar with 10 stools and four tables along e wall in an L shape. It holds a maximum of 30 people which is about a third of the people who want to get in on any given night. This place is only 600 square feet, a true shack indeed. It's not fancy but people don't come for the decor, they come for the seafood. We decided to sit at the bar where your choice of beverage is unsweetened iced tea, lemonade, soda, a red or white wine, Budweiser, and Bud Light. They are open for lunch and dinner. Choices include a raw bar, conch fritters, conch, oysters, clams, shrimp, scallops, and fresh fish. Preparations include broiled and fried. They will even cook your catch for you. Land lovers aren't left out with burgers and chicken sandwiches. I had the most delicious beer batter fish and chips and we shared a half dozen clams between us. For dessert we shared a straight forward classic interpretation of a slice of key lime pie between us. Dinner isn't cheap, it was $50 for two, but it is worth it because you are paying for some really great seafood. Thanks Julie for encouraging me to go back and give it another try. This time was magical. Come soon to experience the original Fish Shack before they go on vacation and then move. They will be closed August 4th through the 27th. When they return they will be open the month of September after which they will be moving on to a new location. A lot of people have reviewed the Fish Shack and a few have rated poorly because of service. That is unfortunate, because our service was great. We had a waitress serving us, but several wait staff checked on us during our meal. Overall, I could not have asked for better service. The Food: The grilled Hog Fish is simply the single best piece of fish I've tasted in south Florida. Served on a platter with choice of two sides, this fish sells out often. It is worth getting there before it does. Just the right amount of grill while leaving the fish juicy and flaky. The Fried Combo is delicious, with well seasoned batter and very generous portions. Even the fries are excellent and the coleslaw is a tasty take on mayo-based slaw... definitely not common, prepackaged restaurant slaw. The atmosphere is no frills, but it doesn't need them. I talked to a couple of locals who have been coming here for years and the waitstaff knows them by name, always a good sign of a great neighborhood place. One lady told me she doesn't like seafood but comes here for the grilled burgers, stating that they are the best in the area. They do look amazing. read more

It's a cute spot. Seems like a lot of locals go there. The fresh fish was decent. The service was friendly. I just got really turned off when I asked for drawn butter and they brought me some fake margarine oil. Definitely was not butter. Also, I asked if their dressings were homemade, and no they are not. Although there are only 4 tables inside and a bar counter, this place is like a joint taken directly from the Florida Keys and the seafood is some of the best in town. The space is snug with four tables along the perimeter of one side and an L-shaped counter on the other with a roughly a handful of stools. I was lucky to snag a table. It felt like I was in a galley kitchen of a rustic boat with the whimsical decor to match. I ordered from their fresh catch menu board. The hogfish sandwich grilled with fries. The food was simple but fresh. The service lacked for me. There were no utensils on the table, no lemon wedges came with my order and the small container of tarter sauce was not even filled half way. Throughout my visit I had to request these items and I felt as if the requests were a bother to the servers. Also I felt rushed the entire time. While not an avid fish eater friends suggested that I try out this restaurant. I chose the fish and chip option with two side dishes (French fries and yellow rice). I love the fish shack. We started visit in many years ago when it was at its original location which probably only had about maybe eight tables? The place was always packed and impossible to get into and always had a long line. Since they moved to their new location they definitely can accommodate more people. Although with the move I feel like the menu has changed a bit and I'm not in love with it quite as much. Previously I would always opt for the shrimp fritters which are delicious, the hog fish and the cracked conch. The hog fish had always been amazing but I feel like at the new location it may have changed a bit. This may be due to pricing but the portions seem smaller now. The clam chowder is very good and this most recent time that we went my husband got the fish and chips and I got the fried platter of fish, shrimp and clams. He loves the fish and chips there but I felt like the batter was A little lacking and not crispy enough. The fried clams were basic fried clams, probably frozen. But the fried shrimp were absolutely delicious. The coleslaw is also very good there too. The original location used to be the spot I would take my dad every time he came to visit. He literally would get picked up from the airport and say let's go to the fish shack. I'll have to let you know the next time he comes into town and I take him to this new location. Be aware that they are closed on certain days so the last time he was in town we tried to visit and they were closed. So I recommend checking the business hours before you visit. read more

From the seasoning to the crispness of the fry batter, I wouldn't change a thing. This isn't only where the locals go, it's where you'll find the local fisherman. We also tried the New England clam chowder which was interesting. It smells like broccoli cheddar soup. And when I tasted it, it really reminds me of broccoli cheddar soup (minus the broccoli). The flavor tastes like it. So for a clam chowder I would rate it a 1-2, because it doesn't taste like clam chowder to me, however the soup tasted alright.
