I stopped at a nearby shopping center to use the restroom and spotted one of my favorite spots, Fish Taco, so of course I had to grab a quick bite. The ladies greeted me as soon as I walked in, which is always such a nice touch. I ordered my go-to shrimp quesadillas. They make the best (fast) quesadillas. If I didn't have to head to work, I definitely would've added a margarita too. The quesadillas come with a side of guacamole and crema (which I don't get), and I always request for the salsa verde. Is Fish Taco going to ever be Michelin rated? Probably not. However, this has become a solid go to for their rice bowls and chips (I'm a big fan of their chicken rice and veggie bowls). Always fresh, always tasty. The Cabin John location is a steady location tucked into the center of a neighborhood strip. Parking can be a bear - be mindful when squeezing into one of the spaces or finding a spot on one of the side streets! Service is typically fast and efficient whether dining in at one of the internal or sidewalk tables or for takeout. read more

We needed food after a long hike and headed to Fish Taco because it was nearby. I decided on the elote and the chicken rice bowl. Both were excellent! They gave me hot sauce with the bowl and that was also really spicy and flavorful. If I'm in the area again, I'd definitely go back for tacos. A reliable source of tacos, salads and rice bowls. I lean toward the salad options when I go, particularly the blackened fish salad. It's full of crisp veggies and a generous portion of blackened fish. Tacos are generous as well. I've sampled the steak and chicken varieties and both are solid. The service is eager and friendly. However, our food arrived at our table a bit cold and the fish in the salads (normally succulent and flavorful) was a bit on the dry side. Nevertheless, I still give this chain high marks. Went here for dinner because the hubby wanted to try this location. The parking is very limited and tight. We came a bit early before the dinner rush started so we got a parking spot but when we left, we noticed the lot was full and cars were roaming around looking for spots. Busy location so I was surprised they didn't have more parking. If you go, I would plan to arrive early or look for street parking. The staff are pretty nice. This is a great spot for a quick and affordable bite in Potomac. We went after a hike on the Billy Goat trail just down the road, and sat outside on the patio. Everyone working there is friendly & service minded, even though it's a counter order environment. I ordered the blackened fish tacos. You have a choice of beans & rice or a salad (which is lettuce & pico). The sauce on the tacos was out of this world, I'd go back just for the sauce. Really great tacos. If you love spicy, ask for a side of hot sauce, it is spicccyy, and flavorful. I wanted to like this place and add it to my list of places to frequent in my neighborhood, but the three bones inside my blackened fish taco and the overall unremarkable gringo tacos really disappointed. I tried the blackened fish taco and shrimp taco platters, one with rice and beans, the second with salad. Ingredients seemed fresh enough, the black beans and rice were pretty good, and the salad was fine. The blackened fish had a good smoky flavor but could have used salt and acid. The salsa side is quite punchy so test it out before applying liberally though I love some heat. They really need to debone that fish though. The shrimp were pretty tender but I found the sauce on top too heavily poured. Finally but critically the tortillas lack flavor. There's both outdoor and indoor seating and there's a fair amount of parking in the lot though it can get crowded. I'm not itching to return though, I must say. read more

Impromptu stop at this Fish Taco location for lunch after leaving a doctor appointment last Friday, and being stuck in traffic. Place is in an area that's seemingly mostly residential, with a small neighborhood plaza. My first thought was parking; off street parking, yes, but not adequate parking. We were lucky to find a spot, and on our way out, the parking lot was even fuller with people circling the lot trying to find a spot. So much so that one older gentleman in a Mercedes squeezed in next to us, just as we were about to back out and hit the car on the other side of him. Oops. So, yeah...parking isn't the best. First impression of the restaurant was that it was small, but clean. Tables were available outside for dining and it was a gorgeous day, so that's what we chose. I ordered a single grilled fish taco along with some chips and salsa and my husband ordered the chicken quesadillas, but requested that they also add steak for a small upcharge. We grabbed a number and took a seat outside. Chips and salsa came out almost immediately and were really good; salsa had a nice flavor. My husband was shocked at how packed full his quesadillas were. He wasn't expecting them to be so grand and made note that they were likely the best quesadillas that he's ever had. My fish taco was fresh and good, but nothing to rave on about. My biggest issue with it was how spicy it was. I wasn't expecting what I guess was the aioli, to have such a kick. So it was hard for me to enjoy it because my mouth felt like it was on fire. Prices were a bit higher for the amount of food you get in my opinion. Customer service was okay. We weren't really being 'waited on', since we were outside and we didn't have drinks. This place is a long way from my house and a place we'll unlikely ever stop again. But for no reason other than the fact that it just isn't anywhere near anything I typically visit. read more

Overall I like this place - the food is tasty and fast! I especially enjoy the vegetarian options - the veggie quesadilla and the tostada are delish. The quesadilla comes with a healthy dollop of thick rich crema and guac. The crispy tostada has a thin drizzle of creme and is bursting with flavor from the pico de gallo - I really like the fresh crisp lettuce and crunchy tortilla. They also give habanero salsa for free if you ask for some salsa. The patio is nice. The only small qualms I have is that I am not able to order the small portions of other salsas/sauces if I order in person but can if I order online for a nominal fee - verde salsa or mango pico or pico de gallo. This was my first visit to any Fish Taco location. The staff was so friendly and VERY patient with my ("everything on the side") mother. The restaurant was clean and very comfortable. There was music playing but not so loud that we couldn't hear each other. I had a chicken guajillo street taco and an ancho shrimp street taco. Quite honestly two of the best tacos I've ever had, and I used to live in Mexico. The spices and textures were perfect. The corn tortillas reminded me of living on the west coast of Mexico, absolutely perfect. They were thin but definitely held up while eating. I cannot wait to go back to Fish Taco again. read more

Having stated that, unfortunately, I find that their various dishes featuring fish (platters and rice bowls) overwhelm the star with lots of sauces, beans and corn--not keen on that approach when it comes to plating. The food is very good, and I order consistently because the food is good. However, every time I order, there is something wrong with my order. Whether it's missing sauces or guacamole, or making the wrong entree. On top of that they add a 5% "bagging fee". This makes no sense especially when they don't bag the food with the proper sauces and side items ordered. On top of this when you politely ask for what you ordered, the employees give you attitude and act as though you're asking for some insane request. All in all this makes for a very frustrating experience. So if you're asking for my opinion, save yourself the frustration and just go to chipotle. The food may be worse but at least you know what your getting and don't have to over pay someone to bag your order incorrectly. If I could give zero stars I would. Hopefully they figure out how to treat their customers. read more

I've always liked the food, but Fish Taco in Cabin John has systematic unsanitary conditions. The last two times I have been there, the person cleaning the floors stopped without washing his hands and delivered food to my table. This occurred while the restaurant wasn't busy. Two women were idle at cash register area and other workers in the kitchen area that weren't busy. Both times I explained to the women at the counter what had happened and asked for my money back and it was provided. The person mopping the floors and hand-cleaning the rubber floor pads should not be handling food. read more

Came on a Saturday right before lunch rush. They have expanded their outdoor seating for COVID and are following all protocols. I ordered chips and red salsa -this salsa is excellent, slightly smokey, very fresh and not overly spicy. For my mains I ordered 3 street tacos, chicken, steak and barbacoa. The amount of meat in each is a ton so I really only needed to eat 2 tacos. The spicy sauce you can get on the side has a great kick and adds a lot to the taco. I loved my steak and barbacoa tacos, 5 stars each. The chicken is just not good. It's chunks of grilled chicken and is bland. They could improve by either marinating the chicken, or doing it tinga style. The margarita was fresh and not acidic. Great lunch! read more

We've been going to the Bethesda Row location lately. The tacos are still very good. We also like their chips and salsa and I like their margaritas. The Bethesda Row location has outdoor seating, which is good. It's nice sitting outside, even if it's just on Woodmont Avenue. There's just one thing: they serve their fish tacos three ways: fried, grilled, and blackened. Which is great! The challenge is that each is topped with a different sauce or relish. Which shouldn't be an issue, except the kitchen has a really hard time putting a different topping on fish from how it's presented in the menu. So if you want blackened fish with pineapple relish: no problem! But if you want blackened fish with mango relish, then you need to explain at great length that you do not want the grilled fish, you just want the mango relish on the blackened fish. Fish Taco owners, is there an opportunity here to simplify your offerings? I'd love to see this on your menu: Fish Tacos - choose options: Fish - fried, grilled, or blackened Sauce - signature or Chile-lime Topping - pico de gallo, mango pico, or pineapple relish All served on flour tortilla with shredded cabbage mix. read more

Mind it that I always order the same food on the menu. I ask for not cabbage and very little rice. Well... they were having a bad day and I was their punching bag. After a little back and forth they realized I was not a new comer, made the burrito as originally requested. Remember I ask for less ingredient and the shrimp they don't carry, but suddenly it was a problem.
