"The service was spectacular! Give me 20 of them" lol but seriously! From the moment we walked in, we were assisted. They let us try different flavors of the gelato and the men that worked there each were so kind and recommended beverages on their menu that were popular and that they personally liked. There was a ton of seating and the A/C was at the perfect temperature with plenty of parking and outside seating as well. The only thing that made it lose a star was that there wasn't free wi-fi but we made it work with using our hot spot on our phones. The decor and ambiance was very European mostly Mediterranean and gave a lot of insight into the history of those countries while not pushing it down your throat. I'm not a big fan of pets in restaurants, but for those who are, it's dog friendly. I enjoyed 2 oat milk lattes and they were tasty and attractive. The crepes were yummy and filling. The service wasn't amazing, but was fine, appropriate. You order at the counter, take a number and they bring it to you. This was one of the most disappointing experiences I've had. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. The photos online are not what you actually get. When I stopped by this morning, the display case was almost empty. I ordered two croissants and a hot bacon-and-egg sandwich to go, and paid $25. Honestly, $15 for that sandwich felt very overpriced compared to other places. When I opened it at home, the only accurate part of the description was that it was hot. The bread was dry, there was no mayo, just one egg and a strip of bacon, and no cheese. It left me completely shocked that this is what they're serving for $15. I was craving a breakfast sandwich and found Starnut Gourmet, a cute café with gluten-free options! I ordered the everything bagel egg sandwich with turkey bacon (no cheese), while my husband ordered a croissant egg sandwich, also with turkey bacon and no cheese. The gluten-free bagel tasted good, and I appreciated that it didn't crumble. However, there was something missing in both sandwiches (probably because we asked for no cheese). If I had known they would be so bland, I would have asked for a side of guac. I'll keep this in mind for next time. Latte is the face of Starnut! Love it when that cute shih tzu comes out to say hello to everyone, especially our shih tzu! The food is, quite honestly, A-ok. More of a 3.5. Nothing to sing home about but it's nice to have in rotation for brunch with the family outdoors, given we always have our dogs with us. I will say, if you have a larger party than 3, call ahead to reserve an outdoor table. They won't let you move the tables around to fit your needs and that's fine. Pricing is par for the course in our neighborhood. Coffee has always been fine but no family member has ever asked to go back here- it's usually my pleading from running out of other options. Nothing bad, nothing terribly great. Parking is easy and there's always a nice breeze going on. read more

We visit McLean 2 times a year and always look forward to coming to Starnut every day we are in town. The coffee is excellent - we don't typically get latte drinks, just plain drip and that is a true test of a coffee shop IMO. The pastries are excellent. All the muffins are great, lemon poppyseed is a favorite, the biscotti's are done right, and the croissant are exquisite. All in all great stuff. Did I say we come here everyday when we are in town? To be more precise, we are here TWO TIMES A DAY! We return in the afternoon for some gelato! Daughters love the Rose flavor but usually try a few others and do a combination of flavors. The real food is great as well. We've done breakfast and lunch here. Note to staff - last few trips early I the morning have been slow on the food prep side. We got oatmeal togo that took extraordinary long to make. Another day we got an omelette that they must have forgot to start because the place was empty and it took a long time. Both were still excellent, just too slow on these days. I don't think this is typical as we've never experienced that in the past, but just to look out for the early morning crew and make sure they are getting the food out reasonably quickly. read more

I've been to Starnut many, many times to enjoy their wonderful biscotti and coffee.  It's a super place to meet friends and relax with good food.  This was the first time we went for their high tea and it was wonderful.  Starnut set up a table complete with a white table cloth and china in a quiet corner beneath a watercolor mural.  We each received four little sandwiches, three pastries, a huge delicious croissant with butter and jam and a selection of chocolates and little cookies.  We did not go home hungry.  We especially appreciated that we could tailor the selections to the dietary needs/wants of our party.  Starnut offered a selection of teas and was very good about stopping by the table to offer more hot water or to see if there was anything we needed.  When the table became full with tasty treats and tea, we could use the two pedestals to the side to hold the carafe of milk or the dish with the honey, sugar etc.  We also appreciated that we could pick a day and time of our choosing rather than being limited to a couple of days a month.  Who knew that this neighborhood delight could be even better?  Thank you to Starnut for an even more special afternoon with friends.  Parking is available right outside. read more

Cute cafe - wish they had more vegetarian options and a tad expensive. The Spanakopita sandwich wasn't quite what I was expecting. There was no phyllo dough and just a spinach and feta grilled cheese panini and the mixed greens on the side were okay. While the service was nice and doing their best to keep up with bustling orders, it was a bit unclear whether the tip on the tablet (which I left $3), went to the servers or to the restaurant (I really hope the servers got it!). The bussing was a bit confusing too as I didn't realize that I was supposed to bus my own table. While it was nice to sit under the veranda with some shade, I got scorched from the sun and umbrellas would be more effective. Easy to find and good size reserved parking available in the area. During rush expect the wait time to be quiet a bit more, I would highly recommend reserving it ahead of time. Seating is limited. They do accommodate walk-ins but take that chance during non-peak hours. Any party above 4 will need reservations. Ambiance is nice, wooden seats are hard, tables height is decent and atmosphere is a quiet. You also get a view of the kitchen for some of the tables. Food is fresh, great and consistent. Overall it will leave you satisfied. Menu has good selection of items. Service and friendly staff will make it a good experience. Make sure you grab a seat first and then order. You might not find any of you do the other way. A good experience overall, I will go back again to try different items on the menu and update the review. read more

Nice Cafe with good food. The ambiance is not so well, and the service was bad. I won't be back, and neither will my group. I showed up with a group of 15 women. We all ordered something. Most of us ordered two items. We tried to move 3 tables together but they would not let us. They said we have to all order a minimum of $10/each person. We were not even allowed to face the chairs to one table. I didn't have a problem with us not being able to move the tables, but it was the way they talked to us. The older man was so rude about it. I think it was his tone of voice. Even though we called ahead and they never told us about the $10/min. A couple of weeks ago, we witnessed something really upsetting at this lovely place. There was an Asian girl (we've seen her there a few times, always having breakfast with friends or working on her laptop with coffee--she seemed like a loyal customer) who was treated quite badly by an older gentleman with glasses. We were at the next table and saw him come over and interrupt her meeting, telling her she had to order food, not just coffee, if she wanted to sit there. It was unbelievably sad. The girl remained polite and continued her meeting, but throughout her work, this gentleman kept looking at her and whispering to a younger staff member, who also wore glasses. When she finished her meeting, she explained that she was about to order food but found his behavior unpleasant and decided she wouldn't be back. She just wanted to pay and leave. He replied that she always came and sat for long periods with only coffee. She responded that she had been coming there for over three years and sometimes spent much on food, while other times just had coffee. And she mentioned she will not come back, he said it was ok, and I will tell Sara. I don't know who she is, but this is so wrong. His attitude was shameful. If people don't enjoy your cafe, they won't bother coming back, and there are so many nice places to choose from. We returned yesterday and, unfortunately, experienced rudeness ourselves. As older patrons who rarely write reviews and aren't very tech-savvy, we felt compelled to share our experience. It made us feel sad and quite angry. It seems similar incidents have happened to others in the past, indicating that management hasn't learned from these issues. I tried to write a review on Google but wasn't able to make it happen. And I am very disappointed. Sara, if you're reading this and recognize the girl who was treated poorly, we urge you to offer a sincere apology. Casual cafe, was nice to grab a coffee and maybe a dessert and chat with a friend. Was there for 1.5 hours and no one bothered us. I'm no connoisseur of coffee and was going to order a macchiato cause I liked the name, but the cashier looked at me and told me don't expect Starbucks-style with the foam and syrup decorated on top as it was a true macchiato/espresso lol! He got me but I would've drank it regardless, but I settled for a cappuccino which was pretty good. I been wanting to find a place to go for brunch on those days that I feel like going after church. I remember seeing their instagram account a couple of months ago and did not remember it until I was standing there and seeing the name. I had the Santorini breakfast, impressive combination of avocado. I have tried in both occasions and it did not disappoint. The place can get busy for brunch during the summer and on Sundays so consider yourself warned. The coffee, I have tried the lavender latter and it was perfect without the need to add sugar. You get the flavor of your favorite latte with a settle yet distinguished pistachio flavor, very tasty & refreshing. The avocado toast had good amount of avocado on it with great flavor & zest. AMAZING outdoor patio overlooking a nice water feature in a new building - in a lovely courtyard-esq setting. The tables chairs space appear quite new, so everything has a fresh updated look to it! A great brunch / lunch spot with salads / pastries / croissants/ sandwiches/ chocolates/ gelato / coffee ! They had GF bagels which was amazing (I think they were UDI's but delicious non the less), I had an avocado toast with a fried egg (cooked perfectly !) on the gf bagel and an iced almond milk latte (tasted like ily coffee)- and enjoyed the outdoor space. My husband had some business to tend to, so i seized the opportunity to try out a local coffee shop. Yelp to the rescue! There's a decent amount of seating. I count (5) 2 seater tables and (5) 4 seater tables (I didn't count the outdoor patio seating). The lighting is pretty good as the windows offer plenty of natural light. The baristas were very welcoming and receptive. I ordered one of their season drinks, a peppermint white [mocha] and a sea salt chocolate toffee biscotti. When I got to the register to pay, I realized there was a larger menu offering more food. Good thing I didn't have breakfast this morning, because I had an avocado toast as well. Drink: The peppermint white was perfect! It wasn't bitter and didn't require any extra sugar or milk. It was just the right temperature - not too hot and certainly not cold or lukewarm. Food - biscotti: The biscotti appears to be homemade and was quite tasty! It wasn't brick hard like most biscotti I've had. The sea salt chocolate was a really nice touch and wasn't overwhelming since it was "drizzled" on the biscotti. I'm not sure I got much of the toffee flavor, but it was good nonetheless!! I dunked it in my mocha - primarily because I thought it was hard and needed to be softened - and because it wasn't hard, soaked up more coffee than the average biscotti. Perfection! Then I ate the rest of the biscotti sans dunking, which was delicious on its own. Food - avocado toast: I love a good avocado toast, but all avo toast is not good. I couldn't find any salt and pepper on the table, so I had a mini panic attack - thinking that I was going to consume something tasteless. Boy I was wrong. The toast is topped with mashed avocado, tomato slices sprinkled with salt and pepper, and a medium fried egg. I generally like my egg over easy, but this was just the right amount of runny yolk, without spilling all over the place. The avocado was dressed with a hint of lemon, salt and pepper. It was a party in my mouth and worth every penny of $9.95. All in all, Star Nut is a gem in McLean, VA and I'd happily go there again!!! read more

I'll admit they serve a decent cup of coffee and have a nice ambiance but I cannot ignore the significant lack of quality in their service. The past multiple times when I have eaten there, I have been met with unfriendly, uncooperative and borderline unwelcoming service. On one occasion, I ordered a small coffee but the barista charged me and served me a medium. When I went to the counter to exchange it for a small and get a refund, the barista responded with a surprising amount of attitude considering it was in fact her blunder in the first place. On top of that, they did not refund me as I asked. On another visit, I went to have a cup of coffee and a croissant while reading a book-- seated towards the back of the cafe. After the first 15 minutes, I was continually distracted by a staff member peaking around the corner every few minutes to see if I had left yet-- if to not-so-passive aggressively hint they wanted me to leave simply so a different paying customer could sit. The staff seems to feel obligated to show decent service only to those who frequent the cafe every morning-- people they know on a first name basis and who likely leave a large tip... To put it frankly, I would not go to Starnut for any other reason than to use their bathroom or drink the free water. For decent coffee I suggest you go to the Greenberrys across the street, or for good service and great food, Fresh Baguette around the corner. read more

My daughter and i came here for the first time while we were waiting on my friend at her doctors appointment. This place is soo nice. The owner i believe was very friendly and helpful.
