Seating is very tight and very minimal indoors and outside. I will never agree with tipping before experiencing the product. The service was subpar in that we waited over an hour for the complete order to be delivered to their two small tables outside. The server seemed burdened by either being at work or perhaps working outdoors. When the server finally returned it was to clear dishes without asking about quality or needs. When brought to his attention he assured the missing items were on the way even after some of us had been eating for 30 minutes. We had to go inside after an hour, wait in a substantial line to present the receipt, only to find out the kitchen had no chit and the food was never made. They get 3 stars for the gumbo because it was on the better side of authentic for a restaurant. We also enjoyed the BYOB aspect although I don't think they provide cups. I couldn't decide what to order because everything on the menu looked amazing--so I went with both the lobster roll and the grouper sandwich, and I'm so glad I did! Both were incredibly fresh, well-seasoned, and absolutely delicious. You can really taste the quality in every bite. Venue and Atmosphere Unlike the other locations, there is not table service. It's more of a grab and go place with minimal seating. Still, the seating is adequate and the restaurant is very clean. Service Service was prompt, courteous, and efficient. Food and Beverages The oysters definitely fulfilled my craving. They were salty but the sweet vinaigrette provided balanced the flavors really well. I also ordered the Caesar salad with a side of blackened grouper. The fish was exceptionally seasoned and the house made dressing was tasty. They also put a decent amount of dressing the salads, which most places don't. When a food-passionate friend invited me to lunch at Atlanta Fishmonger, I was intrigued. You hardly ever hear of a non-coastal city with restaurants featuring truly fresh seafood. ...but if you're anything like me, you probably wrinkle your nose when you pass by the fish section of your local Publix or Kroger. Because that seafood sure do stink. The folks at Atlanta Fishmonger have set out to do things a different way. With fish from reasonably local sources, there is no hint of the seaweed-like smell that you'd expect from a place that has open displays of oysters and whole fish. Instead, there's a truly homey vibe in this small store of fish experts where everyone behind the counter stands eager to convince you that this ain't no supermarket special. My friend and I indulged in a few items from both their regular menu and daily specials. The blackened grouper sandwich that has already received such acclaim from early Yelpers is as good as they say it is. It has such a startlingly thick and dark cover atop the fish that you might be tempted to think it'll be over-salted. Don't. It's amazing. I would have LOVED some carbs on the side, like a bag of potato chips, but that would've just stolen the stomach space that I instead filled with the fishmonger chowder and the seafood gumbo (a special for the day). Both were rich and tasty, but I actually gasped after the first spoonful of gumbo went down my mouth. It's the perfect amount of spice, and I found myself spooning it liberally over all my other bites of food as though it were a condiment. It's that good. Everything was so impressive that my foodie friend went back inside after our meal (where we'd ordered so much food the plates were teetering precariously off the side of the table) to order more seafood to take home for that night's dinner. The fishmongers were kind enough to give her plenty of advice for how to prepare her halibut fillet. As I curiously eavesdropped, it became abundantly clear these were not only fish experts; they're also chefs in their own right. To note: if you're the kind of person that does your menu research before coming, just note that some of them might not be available when you arrive. This is a place that features a limited supply of locally sourced ingredients, which means that it'll be incredibly tasting, but in short supply. I happen to see that as a good thing, but I know some Yelpers may make a fuss about a restaurant not having their favorites. For instance, the crab and avocado that I had my heart set on wasn't available, but the kind woman at the register directed me toward another special that featured assorted seafood and avocado on a tostada, which turned out to be absolutely fabulous. Also, there is limited counter- and bar-based seats within the restaurant, but a few umbrella-shaded seats outdoors. I finally was in the area and decided to try the popular Fishmonger. My husband loved the blackened fish sandwich. I had the crab avocado toast and I feel it was lacking flavor and I did not love the texture. This is the smallest location and it's really small. The have a couple of tiny tables on the sidewalk and an island inside but not comfortable. Service is great. Everybody was kind and professional. They sell fresh seafood but I did not like the way it was stored and presented. It is counter service and our group ordered shrimp cocktail (with tons of paprika), shrimp roll sandwich (decent size sandwich but would have preferred with a splash of lemon), grilled grouper sandwich (THE BEST THING ON THEIR MENU) and Caesar salad with grilled grouper (served with crunchy bits was too wet for my losing, the dressing was delicious though). Ambiance: Very intimate yet vibrant inside. Essentially the entire space is the kitchen and you are at a chefs table. You can see everything the kitchen team is doing and you can hear their conversations as well. Also they do a great job of using their patio space as well. I had a chance to watch them prepare everything and that was neat. I also got a chance to see them filet a fish which was pretty neat in addition. There is loud music, multiple conversations going on with patrons and staff alike and it really just blends nicely. This is a good place for a fun date or casual meal. While a lot of the food they serve may be high end dining quality make no mistake this is a causal fun spot. Overall: A must try in the city!
