This is a small local shack by the side of 71. Great service, quantity, and quality but I felt the burger lacked some flavor. They are patient and genuine. 3, the weather was so nice and eating outdoor was fantastic. The environment is nicely set up and maintained. 4, the bathrooms are very neat and clean. Home of the best breakfast taco ever. Folks, I'm referring to none other than the Marty. If you haven't had one yet, I suggest you get over to Fitties ASAP and order yourself one (or two or three). You might only be able to eat one since they're so large, but there's nothing wrong with hoarding more for later. My affinity for the Marty started 5 years ago, when my husband brought home one that a coworker had gifted him. I'm pretty sure that my inner fat kid died and went to heaven when I took my first bite. Now every time I go near Bastrop, I stop at Fitties. This past Wednesday, I stopped around lunch time, only to find out that they stopped making breakfast tacos at 11:00am. I didn't realize it until then, but all of my past trips have been in the morning, so it never even crossed my mind that they'd stop serving tacos! I gave Gary (the owner) so much grief, but he took it like a champ. I ended up ordering the Lucy, which is a lean brisket sandwich with a side (I chose potato salad) and drink. All for under $7 - what?!? So reasonably priced. Pro tip: they require a minimum of $15 for credit card charges, so remember to bring some cash. Gary threw in peach cobbler because he felt so bad, which was super nice of him. Everything was delicious! The meat was tender, the potato salad was fresh, and the cobbler was warm. I also love their BBQ sauce, which is more savory than sweet. And of course, the customer service is spectacular - Gary is a hoot! I really wanted to like this place but there was no redeeming quality throughout our dining experience. First off, the cashier hardly paid attention to our order. I had to repeat a question 3x and even then barely got a response (re: how the smoke burger is prepared). Then she completely left off my first item from our total, but luckily my husband confirmed before paying. The food was just okay. Brisket sandwich was hardly filling and they went overboard on sauce so couldn't taste any of the meat. The pork ribs were all bone or fat so definitely worth your money. And finally, we tried to add on fries as a separate transaction but they require a $15 minimum order (vs. the typical $5) for credit cards. We even tried ordering an additional burger but they refused. Terrible customer service. I recommend visiting Neighbors in downtown Bastrop instead. Don't waste your time or money. read more

I was staying at the Happy Horse Hotel (great little place in Bastrop for a charming getaway on a farm!) and the owners recommended I come here for breakfast tacos. Breakfast burrito more like! The taco was huge, with a fresh fired tortilla, brimming with eggs and fillings of my choosing. It felt a little lacking in panache - that is, salt, pepper and anything to take it really over the top. I think some fresh salsa would have helped, but the taco fell apart when I tried to open it (so stuffed) and it was piping hot too. This place has a call ahead option and lots of benches for eating outside, if you'd like. On my way back from Day Trip #2 to Bastrop, I stopped at Fitties for some cue. What drew me to it was, on the drive in, I could see the smoker outdoors being tended right there in full view of the picnic tables. It's just a quaint setup, looked pretty homey and I like giving mom 'n pop shops my business. First, to frame it - this road-stand BBQ - it's not elevated like La Barbecue or Franklin's or the craziness we have going on in Austin. It's honest to goodness, home recipe brisket and sausage and tatoe salad. So, in that realm, here's where I get four stars: 5 Stars: Smoked Sausage. Some of the BEST I've ever had. And I didn't even order it for me, I got the wrap for my kid and she wasn't hungry. Good good good stuff. Friendly Service in a family run environment. Cute setup for an outdoor eatery. 3 Stars: My chopped beef sandwich was good, nothing out of the ordinary or special. I liked that it was on a sesame seed bun with pickle and onion. The bbq sauce was sweeter than I prefer, but it was all in all an A Ok sandwich. Their prices are pretty reasonable, which is great, but you should treat them as cash-only. They have a $15.00 minimum limit on cards. That makes sense if you're ordering by the lb, but not for a couple grabbing some food. Again - I need to learn to go for the basics like brisket, a side, the sausage, etc., when I visit a new bbq joint so I can judge them based on the staples. But momma likes a chopped beef sandwich. Thank you fellow Yelpers for helping me find this hidden gem in the middle of nowhere. After a trip to Brenham to the Blue Bell Factory, we were looking for a BBQ joint on the way back home to Austin and we found Fitties. We almost passed it as it is a small little house, but these mom-and-pop shops is where the magic happens. When we walked up, Gary took our order and we got the family pack, which had 1.5 lbs of brisket, 1 lb of sausage, and 3 sides (potato salad, green beens, dirty rice). They ran out of ribs! He said someone ordered 3 racks right before, so we were bummed out. But then the owner J.O. came by the side with the last few pieces and saved the day! I spoke to the owner J.O. and he said they use cedar and pecan wood to smoke the meats instead of the typical mesquite. Very nice flavors and something you would expect if you had a backyard BBQ with your friends. Here's my review on the food: Ribs: Some of the BEST ribs I've ever had! I'm a ribs guy and I'm picky on it. I could see why they went so fast. The meat was falling apart, had a nice char to it and the smokiness was oh so good. Brisket: The flavor was very good and the cut near the fat was to die for - a solid brisket. Sausage: I think the sausage here is TOP 3 for me. It doesn't have the gritty ground up taste like some places or the processed taste. Definitely fresh and whatever they did here made this sausage epic. BBQ Sauce: Homemade and out of this world! My wife thinks it's the best BBQ sauce she's ever had. Not too sweet and not too tangy, not too thick or watery, a perfect balance. Also TOP 3 in my menu, if not the best. Potato Salad: Not bad, I would've liked more potatoes, didn't feel too heavy which was good. Green Beans: I'm not a fan of green beans in general, but my wife said it was much better than other places. Dirty Rice: A must-get - they mix it in with chunks of ground sausage which adds a lot of comfort to your meal. These guys also let us try the bread pudding and cookies, which is something everyone must get even if you're full! These guys have a lot of heart in what they do and their food proves it! read more

The year of the dragon has started off delicious with a lunch stop at "Fitties". BBQ. That was my husbands main request for lunch...not just any BBQ, but BBQ found off the roadside in a very small restaurant or shack. He firmly believes this is not only the most authentic BBQ but also the best and Fitties definitely fits his status quo. I'm so very happy to report that the brisket here is the bomb. Like the best BBQ brisket I've had in a long, long while. I ordered the sliced beef sandwich and what I got for a little over $3 was huge sandwich with a mound of brisket, the perfect amount of sauce on a slightly toasted bun. YUM. I'll admit, I did notice some fat on the brisket BUT it was not much and it actually seemed to add to the overall flavor of the sandwich. We also ordered a 1/2 pound of ribs which, I'm not a much a rib gal myself, but the hubs proclaimed them to be "legit". My only complaint (and it's silly/easily remedied one) was the sides did not include french fries. I could've really gone for some f.f. with my sandwich but that's neither here nor there. I'm excited to have a new place to stop at during my frequent journeys from Houston to Austin. A hungry traveler has many BBQ Shack dining options on highway 71 but this place is really good. The BBQ here is delicious! However, we did have some difficulty finding this place. It's off of Highway 71, but it no longer looks like the pictures from the previous yelp reviews. If you drive up to the address located on yelp, it will look like a deserted lot with not much going on, but Fitties is indeed OPEN! It's now located in an inconspicuous grey trailer within this lot and it's only open for drive through and with a limited menu. There is no signage or anything, so it might look a little sketch, but don't be alarmed. The owner of the joint was very friendly and let us know that they actually just reopened for business a few days ago, which is probably why there's no sign or anything. Like I said earlier the food is great as well. We'll definitely be coming back next time we stop by Bastrop! read more

Great place where u walk up to the window and order and have the option to eat at one of the tables outside. I called ahead and it was ready when I got there. Already sauced for me which I like. They serve red diamond bottled sweet tea fwiw. Sauce is tangy with a nice char/crust on the brisket. Pinto beans were decent kinda like ranch style beans with a little less flavor but maybe my tastebuds were already overwhelmed d/t all the flavor the beef ribs & brisket packed. Dang son, this place is LEGIT. We came here on our way from Houston to Austin on a late Friday afternoon. We tried stopping at some spots closer to Houston on the way but all of them had closed up for the day because they'd sold out. It was approaching 5 p.m. and I was starting to get worried I wasn't going to get any BBQ, so I called ahead to Fitties. The guy who answered the phone said, "Oh YEAH honey! We still got ERRYTHANG!" Awww yisssss. We pulled up and parked next to this little shack. The owner greeted us warmly and, upon seeing our obvious indecision about what to order, provided us with free little samples of the dirty rice and the bread pudding. The bread pudding was OK, but the dirty rice - damn it was good! We ended up going with 2 two-meat plates, one chicken and ribs for me, and the other brisket and sausage for my friend, with cole slaw and green beans on the side for me and potato salad and dirty rice on the side for her. Meats: The chicken was great, juicy with a crispy skin. The sausage was also very good - spicy and very juicy. The brisket was, sadly, only OK. I'm not a brisket fan to begin with so it has to be otherworldly to impress me. From a purely technical standpoint, it was well-made: Perfect smoke ring, great texture, nice spicing and a good smoky flavor. But just a teeny bit dry and chewy. Now, the ribs - I am a ribs aficionado. And these ribs were GOOD. Most people don't realize that ribs are supposed to be tender enough that they juuuuust cling to the bone, but not so overcooked that they literally fall off the bone when you pick it up. And these were PERFECT. The flavor was also out of this world. I saw someone else complained about too much fat on the ribs - whaaaaat! The meat:fat ratio was just perfect - lots more meat than fat. Sides: The cole slaw was pretty good. The green beans were OK - I like tons of bacon and only found a couple pieces. But still good! Tasted like they may have been home-canned. The potato salad was VERY good and you've already heard my raving on the dirty rice. The bathrooms are clean so it's a good spot to stop. And as others have noted: $15 minimum for credit cards, and they do have breakfast tacos (sadly we had wayyyy too much food to sample these). It was New Year day, well, Lunar New Year, I was on my way through Bastrop and decided to stop by for a quick lunch before heading back. I read the reviews and most people talked about breakfast burrito, nothing like celebrating the year of the horse with a Tex-Mex breakfast burrito and BBQ, right? Fitties is right off the highway, and because it was windy that day, the outside dinning area can be a bit dusty. We ordered the sausage/egg/jalapeno breakfast burrito and ribs plate. The ribs plate is so-so, too much sauce IMO, the potato salad is pretty good, not a big fan of green beans though. The breakfast burrito is, OMG, delicious!, like really delicious, like really really delicious, did I mention it was delicious? I'm going to put on the record, up to that day, that was best breakfast burrito I ever had. My only dis on fitties, more like picking bones from eggs, is that the minimum credit card is $15, for a guy that only have $20 on them most of the time, it sucks since I had to stop by the bank afterwards. read more

Don't know why such rave reviews. The place was barely adequate and nothing special. Beef brisket was very tough. It did have a good smoke in the meat, and the bark was pretty good. But the toughness was not desirable. We tried both the lean cut and the regular cut. I'm a "keep that fat on the meat" person, but some of these slices had almost a 1" wide piece of fat (that was also a bit tough). That's too much. The sauce was adequate. But spices Sides: Cole Slaw - they need to call it shaved cabbage and carrots. That's all it was. No mayo, no vinegar, no salt & pepper. Just cabbage with a few carrot shavings. That is not Cole Slaw. Dirty Rice: now this was excellent. Fries: good, but very small side size. Potato Salad: very tasty. Don't know if it was homemade or from a tub. Overall value based on quality and quantity for price is low. Won't stop again, will try a different place in the area. read more

I ate here 3 days straight for bbq and bf taco while in Austin, this is the best bbq I have ever had in Texas and great price, taco portion was so generous thought would need 2 to get full but 1 was sufficient, I personally think the bbq it tastes so much better than some other big name brands. I thought this place was just ok. The ribs were not really tender at all, kinda chewy and didn't rip of the bone like they should after a long cook. Flavor wasn't really there either. Hardly any smoke flavor as well. The brisket was tough and sorta dry. Plus the fat wasn't really rendered down. You can't tell cause the fat is not melty, it's hard and yellow still. Can barely taste the rub and not much smoke flavor. Needed salt. Maybe I went on a bad Sunday, who knows. The actual place is cool, outdoor seating, trees around. Worker was nice. It's a neat spot. I really liked this cute little roadside BBQ joint in Bastrop. It had a great outdoor area; plenty of room for the kids to run around while waiting on your food. They have great prices and good combo deals. The boys got cheeseburgers. They come fully loaded, so if you don't like certain toppings or condiments, make sure to tell them. I had the sausage and brisket. The sausage was very good and a bit spicy. I wanted potato salad, but they were out, however the cole slaw and green beans were fine. I love BBQ. And the way I judge a BBQ restaurant is by its brisket. Unfortunately, this did not live up to it. The brisket was fine, but I've had much better. It was a bit dry and chewy. The one thing this place loves is its sauce. It slathers everything in sauce, which I'm ok with. But if you're not, I'd ask for it on the side. Ate at Fitties today. Got a 2 meat plate with brisket, sausage, green beans and tater salad. All of this and 2 bottles of water for $13 and change. Pretty standard pricing for Texas BBQ. Except one caveat. But we'll come back to that. Both meats were covered in a thin, warm and slightly sweet BBQ sauce. I thought it was very good and really enjoyed it (If you do not want sauce, ask for it on the side when ordering). The sausage had good snap and texture, but was just a tad dry and didn't have a ton of personality. I think a little heat in the links would go a long way. The brisket had too much smoke on it and was a little salty in my opinion. The fatty parts were rendered well and the burnt end piece that I got would both have been excellent bites if not for the salt. The center cut of the brisket was just a little tough. All outdoor seating at Fitties. Not a deal breaker for me. I found a shady spot and had my lunch. But be warned if you expect a dining room with A/C. The sides were both very good. Really starting to enjoy finding BBQers who take pride in their side dishes too (i.e., Southside Market in Elgin, Kerlin BBQ in Austin). Green beans were piping hot. Both unexpected and awesome. Had a big hunk of bacon in them too. The potato salad was in the box, nice, cold and delicious. It didn't last long. I bought two bottles of water with my initial purchase. Drank one while I waited, ordered another when I got my Q. Didn't realize they were $2.12 apiece. Good portions of BBQ and 2 sides for $9 and change, what a great deal. 3 half liter bottles of water for almost $6.50, seems a little "I'm in Austin on 6th street" pricey to me. So, after all that, I'd give the BBQ 3 stars, the sides and sauce 4 stars and the water pricing a 1. Overall experience, I'd give it a not bad. And I will be back. I am giving this place 3 stars mostly because it's such a cute little local bbq joint. I do not love chains and try not to eat at any, especially when I travel. This place was so cute. It's outdoor seating (which is the only seating) has a good ambiance. Lots of seating, clean bathrooms, and cute decor including light strands draped overhead. The food was okay. My son got the chicken and it had a good bit of decent sauce on it. It was a little dry but still good. The sides aren't fresh and they were out a few but I like that they even have dirty rice as an option, and it was pretty good. I for the chopped beef sandwich and it was good.
