Five Guys has the best fast food skin-on French fries! The large is enough for 3 people. Sometimes when I'm grilling at home I pick up these Fries to-go and add them to my menu because they're so impressive. Their potatoes with the peanut oil are a perfect combination. The regular burger with any toppings is a double and a lot of food. I just go for the "little burger" because it's plenty. The burgers are cooked well done with no grill marks like Portillo's. A regular fry w/2 regular burgers = ~$20 They also offer hot dogs, milkshakes, and drinks which I haven't tried. The interior displays their food awards, newspaper articles, sacks of potatoes, bottled peanut oil, and complimentary peanuts in shell. The kitchen is wide open to view with friendly cooks and staff behind the counter. I'm glad there's many locations around the Chicago suburbs as I visit every so often. read more

What a terrific effort to keep customer service and satisfaction at its best! I arrived around 11:30am and they were clearly short-handed. (A Manager and one other employee on duty). But, considering this huge hurdle they had to overcome, the manager acknowledged every customer that walked in the door and immediately said they would be right with them. Yes it took longer than usual to get lunch cooked but the quality was absolutely perfect, on point and at no time did either employee complain or look like they were aggravated with the number of customers they had to deal with. What happened, Five Guys? You used to be cool. Shortly after I met my future wife and would visit her in suburban DC, she introduced me to a small but popular hamburger place with bad parking called Five Guys, and while falling for the girl, I fell for the burger place too. We'd walk in and, right away, a guy would yell to us, "How many burgers you gonna have?" My wife suggested at first that we each get a little one, meaning one patty, as it was plenty big with the toppings. We'd order in advance so often in next few years that, on the phone base itself, we wrote the phone number and our toppings. She was LH L T P K M, I was LH L T P FO A1. We'd split a small order of fries, which always overflowed the styrofoam cup in the bottom of the bag. It was the oldest of three Five Guys in existence at the time. What made the place great was not just the quality of the hamburger. It was the joy in seeing how many Saturday-at-noon customers were wearing baseball caps, looking for a hangover remedy in the afterglow of their Friday night. It was the habit of eating peanuts while waiting, cracking the shells and throwing them on the floor like everyone else did. It was the whiteboard that told us from where the potatoes came. Usually Maine, but sometimes Idaho and other sundry spots. It was the struggle to come up with a message to put on an index card, one that would trump all the others stuck to the bulletin board. (I actually left a bunch of my own thumbtacks there, to make sure every card could have its moment in the sun.) And it was the price: our two burgers and fries cost $7.06. Cheap, basic, great. We loved Five Guys and they loved us back, unconditionally. Fast forward twelve years. Five Guys restaurants are everywhere. And, frankly, they disappoint. Not that they offer terrible food. No, the food's decent. But it used to be better. So much better. Is it the lack of quality control? The Bloomingdale location, which is closest to me but still not close, has yet to cook the fries properly; perhaps it's the quality of potato they use now, or perhaps fry cooks here don't know their craft or don't care. After three visits, I gave up coming to this one. There's no love there. Is it the lack of ambiance? I have yet to see an Illinois customer throw peanut shells on the floor. Don't y'all get it? That's how it's done! Why on earth would they leave open boxes of peanuts by the ordering area if being sloppy was a no-no? Five Guys was the place for sloppy, hungover, not-so-fresh people! Is it the competition? There are so many "gourmet burger" places around now. They have many fancy choices and ingredients, and they charge a ton for them. Five Guys' ingredients haven't gotten any better, but their prices would make you think so. The prices have nearly doubled. Still basic, but no longer cheap. Perhaps that what happens when a corporate strategy is so hellbent on expansion that franchisees are forced to invest in at least FIVE locations. That's right! You wanna open a Five Guys? Better find four other people just like you and team up. Five Guys used to be our crown jewel. It's not ours alone anymore, which is good, I guess. All of America can experience it now. But it's no longer a crown jewel either. It's an overpriced burger and fries that can be great but usually disappoints, in a location that lacks character and warmth. They used to be "guys," dressed in T-shirts and talking about the football game. Now they wear expensive suits and talk about derivatives in the market. Occasionally my wife and I will visit one of the other locations, with hopes of finding that magic again. But no matter how many different flavors of Coke the new-fangled machine can program for us, there's still a sour taste in my mouth. Ever run into an old friend that has made it big? Niceties are shared, and you congratulate him on his newfound fame and success, but you think to yourself, "what the heck happened to him? He used to be cool." But take care of yourself, Five Guys. What a scam as this is what they call their "regular" burger. Very misleading! If I wanted a really good "big & thick" burger for about the same price, I would go to either Outback Steak house or Ruby Tuesdays where the burgers are not two patties thrown on a bun, but rather quality meat that can actually be prepared medium rare. Man, I love me some Five Guys. These are probably the best fast food burgers & fries you can find. (This is a bone of some contention, but I stand by it.) Having had it for the first and only time in Mishawaka, IN, we were thrilled -- gleeful, even -- when the husband and I saw that one was opening in Bloomingdale. We go to the Meijer nearby a lot and do other shopping in the area, so it's very convenient. And man, is it good. The burgers are juicy, hot and topped with whatever you want. The fries are fresh, cut from actual potatoes, still steaming hot and coated with salt or cajun seasoning. And that's pretty much the whole menu, save for a hot dog and a "veggie sandwich". (Oh, and free peanuts while you wait for your fresh-made food.) They only do a couple things, but they do them very, very well. God bless Five Guys for opening in Illinois. (PS Note that this will set you back a bit more than McDonald's or BK. But it's REAL FOOD. And a regular fry will serve two. And a regular burger has two patties. It's worth it.) read more

The buns were stale and fell apart in our hands. The fries were underdone and just plain awful. Idaho potatoes deserve better than what this place did to them. Being a Chicago native I usually pick a nice vienna beef hot dog over a burger but every once in a while a change of pace is good. I decided to stop by this place for a burger for dinner. I got the: Little Cheeseburger (5.00): No big surprise, its great. Huge selection of free toppings. Burger is fresh and cooked and assembled right in front of you. Its the size of a regular quarter pounder at mcdonalds Little Fries (2.79): Don't let the name fool you, "Little" at this place does not mean small in regards to both portion and size. I basically got 2 pounds of potato in a brown bag. They were hand cut fries and came piping hot. Again, no surprise they were awesome. Drink: (2.29): Somehow they managed to out do a lot of places even in the soda department. They had 2 coke freestyle machines which has hundreds of different choices and combinations. You can flavor your sprite or coke with even more flavors like cherry or orange or vanilla. Does it surprise anyone that a place that only serves burgers, fries, and soda does all three spectacularly well? I also thought the decor was amusing, its basically big bold signs with all their accolades and awards all over the place so if you even think of a criticism, it makes you think there is something wrong with YOU, not the place. These guys have grown on me. I don't think I am ready to give them four stars quite yet, but I have learned quite a bit over the last year and a half. If eating a regular burger (two patties), three average adults can share a large fry. I much prefer the regular fries to the Cajun fire which I think are woefully over seasoned. They put in two Coke Freestyle machines. These are really cool and offer a lot of variety. They have only gotten my order wrong once here. I asked for BBQ sauce on the side and ended up with ketchup on the burger instead. Disappointing, but still edible. I learned that they slice a hot dog lengthwise and cook it on the griddle so I may have to try that on my next visit. I don't think there's anything more I can say about Five Guys that hasn't been said in previous reviews. Good burgers, VERY juicy, long list of condiments you can add. Pretty nice that A-1 is on the list. What suprised me is that I just said "Cheeseburger" when I ordered and well, their "cheeseburger" is a double patty burger. A little too big for what I wanted or normally get, but I guess since it was the first time I tried the burger, I should go "all out". Next time I have to remember to get the "Little Cheeseburger". The fries were ok--I prefer thinner and crispier fries, but these were still super fresh. One thing I noticed about this place was that it was SUPER clean. Went here over lunch, and this was my second time there. For whatever reason I didn't remember the first time to be anything special, but this time around I liked it enough to award four stars. Five Guys serves a pretty decent burger, at a pretty steep hit to the wallet. ($11 for a cheeseburger, fries and a drink!) With that said, they serve food to you by the pound, so if you're feeling particularly hungry, Five Guys will do you good. The fries aren't terribly greasy, but if you're going for flavor, you're better off with the cajun-style fries, which have a cumin/paprika kick to it. Dipping the regular fries in ketchup spiked with malt vinegar helped them along. The burger was flavorful. The patties are handmade and well seasoned, and the ingredients are made fresh. I don't remember much about the sesame seed bun. Peanuts are available on top of the trash cans (probably one of those quirky staples of the franchise) but we didn't have any. My rating is more like 2.5 stars, but I can't give half a star. Many people I know have RAVED about Five Guys so I figured I'd start my quest for the ultimate hamburger in the Chicagoland area here. Maybe it was my expectations that were set too high, but I have to say it was just ok. It was a little too greasy for my liking and lacked a flavor that made me feel I had gotten my money's worth. I did enjoy the fries, but just like the burgers they weren't "out of this world" like everyone had told me they were. Oh, I also liked the all you can eat peanuts. I love this place because the veggie sandwich (a hamburger bun with any or all of the toppings but no burger) is only like two bucks! It's just a bun with toppings so I don't know why it tastes so great, but it does. I love it. And the fries are delicious! A large could feed like ten people though, so you'll probably want to get a regular and then split that with someone. They don't have a huge menu (just "burgers," "fries," "hot dogs & sandwiches" and drinks) but there are lots of toppings so you can totally customize your order, and the free peanuts while you wait are a nice touch. It's definitely not a healthy place to eat, but if you feel like fast food, it's great! read more

If a place is expensive, but amazing- they're worth my five stars. If the food is average and expensive, something's wrong with their business model... Like a few others, I really can't fathom why this burger place costs so darn much. I know McDonald's doesn't have squat on so-called 'fresh' burgers, but I received SO much more pleasure while eating the $1.89 Daily Double at McDonald's than my Five Guys burger. Basically, I demand a good taste-to-value ratio from all my food. If it tastes REALLY amazing, I am willing to part with $10-12 for something basic like a hamburger. However, the Five Guys burger was no better than the $3.50 hamburger from Portillo's and it was messier simply due to the way they stacked and cut the ingredients (sliced onions and tomatoes were cut too thick for a burger). Also, the beef is not 'Kobe beef,' so there's no reason for the price hike incurred here. I gave an extra star for the fries, which are home-cut and very good. Unfortunately, this place is not convenient to get to, overpriced and kind of looks like White Castle (hospital-like), so it's an all-around turnoff for me and I will not go back. The burgers and fries are good but it seems really pricey. There are a bunch of toppings available for the burgers. The portion size is large. Thry also have hot dogs but I've never ordered one. Extra fries are dumped in a paper bag and the fries taste good. I like how the restaurant shows where they get their potatoes on a little chalkboard. The food is extremely greasy so so you are into heart health, this isn't the best place. The fountain drinks come from this machine that has a bunch of possibilities for different combinations. That machine isn't too common and I've only seen it at Five Guys restaurants and one other bowling place. My main complaint is the price. My wife and I each got burgers, fries, and a drink and the bill was $30 or so with tax. I know I could go other places and get a burger and fries for way cheaper. The food was good so I might go again but definitely not a first choice with those prices. read more

I read the reviews before I went, and I was a bit nervous being as it was my first time; but I LOVED IT! Nathan K. was super helpful in his suggestions, explanations and really nice when I was being indecisive :) Everything was super fresh and tastey. I had the bacon cheese burger with grilled mushrooms, jalapeno peppers mayo and A1 sauce. -- mmm mmm good! Nathan K. also suggested the cajun fries with a side of A1 sauce and boy was it tatsey with a good kick! Loved the peanuts to nosh on whilst I was waiting. And I finally got to see this Coca Cola Free Style Machine, but I ended up drinking sweet tea! All in all, I think the place was really good -- clean -- and very nice staff! I know that rumor has it that you get enough fries to share. Don't believe that. Get your own order of fries you can never have enough Cajun fries. I went there this week and it is a great place whether you want it to go, or have a quick sit down lunch.
