This would be my favorite casual burger spot if it wasn't for In-n-out. They do have them beat with their Cajun fries, but I still prefer the burger at In-n-out. I didn't know that the regulars included two patties, so I found that out when I got my food. I don't know why they put the food in the bag when I was dining in. I felt like if they didn't put the aluminum foil on the burgers it would've been better. The one thing I hate about burgers is that the buns could get soggy. This burger I had was just that burger. The price: 4-5 bucks dependin' on which burger you get. If you get a Small Cheese burger it's 3.99. A regular cheese burger 4.99. I got the regular 5 dollar burger and I was not surprised impressed with the size.... 3. The Burger: It's ok...... Seriously, it's not bad. The bun is fresh and soft.... The patty itself feels like a real Hamburger grounded up Patty as opposed to anything else. The cool thing is you can add a bunch of random-ass toppings free of charge: Relish, Ketchup, Green peppers, Mushrooms, A 1 Sauce, Bbq sauce...... etc. etc. Though, it's a bit small for my taste. I'm not a 300 lb fat-ass who likes to eat. But more like a competitive eater stuck in this 6 foot 190 Asian man's body.... Though, that is beside the point...... The point is I would need to eat another burger to get full..... I'm not gonna drop another 4-5 bucks (10 bucks total for all you mathematically challenged) to get full..... 4. I have tried Five Guys on 2 diff occasions. First time I thought it was whatevs. Cajun fries were bomb though. Second time I was much more impressed. It tasted pretty darn good and the addition of jalapenos gave it a nice kick. It is kind of pricey though. Friend ordered a Triple Bacon Cheeseburger and it was $7.50. The Good: About freaking time that a Five Guys opens out here!! Great place with a great menu, nice and simple burger, hot dogs and fries. They have 2 style of burgers the famous, which is 2 patties and the little, 1 patty. They have a nice selection of toppings that you can put on your burger and then they make it to order. While you wait chow down on some peanuts. My GPS died on the way to this place, but it's easy to find its on the outside of the South Bay Pavillion. The Bad: It's all the way in Carson, but considering I had to take a 45 minute metro ride when I was back east it's not too bad. I first had this burger at the West Village when I was still living in the eastcoast because of all the raves that I kept hearing about. Being a cali girl and spoiled with all the burger joints we have down here (esp Inn N Out), I had very high expectations for this burger. THE VERDICT: Patties were nice and juicey, fresh veggies, and staff was quick and got my order exactly as I wanted. Inn n Out with their new paper thin economy patties does not compare, except maybe their fries are still amazing. Five Guys has terrible fries, doesn't taste anything more than the spices they put on and a lump of cut up deep fried potatoes. The 4 stars all go toward the quality of their burgers. This particular restaurant didn't seem as authentic as the West Village branch so I took out one star. Boxes of the free peanuts were put on top of trash bins whereas at the West Village branch, they actually had barrels of peanuts at the front of the restaurant! Prices I could definitely agree with, it was WAY less than the West Village branch. I guess it goes with the standard of living..I mean, what could you expect from Carson??! ;) RECOMMENDATIONS: Bacon cheeseburger with hot sauce, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, mayo, and ketchup. The hot sauce tastes very similar to the mild hot wings sauce that they use on Hooters wings, so if you can bare that, it's worth it. So many possibilities! I got a cheeseburger with grilled mushrooms, grilled onions, and A1 sauce and I think that I made a really good choice. Large cajun fries can be good to share in a small group, and they also have peanuts you can scoop yourself for free. They're finally here in California! They were a novelty to try on the East Coast, but now that they're here, I realize the size of the burger doesn't compare to In-N-Out's; they're considerably smaller. However, I love being able to customize the toppings and sauces in my burger. Still yummy. The Cajun fries totally beats the regular fries, so don't make the mistake of ordering the wrong one. After all the hoopla about Five Guys, I was finally able to get my hands on one of these babies for dinner. My favorite part about the burger (and probably the most important part) is the meat. The beef was delicious! It's not your average pre-packaged meat that they microwave, "cook" and serve. Nope. The patty they was fresh, and they fry it on the stove individually so it can simmer, sizzle, and do work its magic. The patty to bun size ratio was a bit off, since my patty was smaller, but that's a small tiff in relation to the delicious-ness of the entire burger. The entire burger is customizable, which is great for those who are picky (e.g. myself). I choose the "little hamburger" which came with one patty (enough for me). You can choose to have the regular hamburger, which comes with 2 patties, and I think you can even up it to 3 if you want to feast. I topped mine with grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, tomatoes, and lettuce with ketchup on the side. The bf had the double patties with bbq sauce and it definitely tastes much better. Next time, I'm adding the bbq! They give you a lot of those cajun fries! It comes in a cup, and filled to the top. We shared, and still couldn't finish it. It's a bit spicy, but not to the point where you need water every few bites. Free peanuts for appetizers while you wait for your order. Verdict: Contender for one of the best burgers in town, but I wouldn't say it's number one. Maybe 2. In & Out is still my number 1. read more

OK, the hype for this place is huge. The reality is - it's just okay. I searched the mall for this location - it's tucked away between Sears and Old Navy on Avalon, at the mall. I ordered the cheeseburger, with the works, cut in half. I've been eating too many burgers, and I need it cut in half so I only eat a portion of it. I also ordered the fries. To go. Every burger is made-to-order, so it's not really "fast" fast food. However, it's an open kitchen, so you can see everything being assembled. While you wait, you can take advantage of free peanuts (which, thanks to our litigious society, can NOT be removed from the premises, for fear that people with nut allergies will come in contact with them and SUE the restaurant!!!). They have bags of potatoes in the place, and a sign that indicates the provenance of the day's potatoes. Unusual touch, but I like it. As my burger was coming ready, I heard the girl say, "This one needs to be cut in half!" The guy to whom she was speaking shrugged and went through the double-doors to the back. "To get a knife?" I wondered. He came back to the prep area, put his gloves on, and put the uncut burger in the bag. ??? Hello! Job opening! Another guy filled (and I mean FILLED) the bag with french fries. I picked it up and went to my car. The burger was good - juicy and everything - but it was outshined (outshone?) by the fries. The fries are great. But the burger is just... meh. And with the sloppy service, I can't realistically recommend it. There are better burgers out there. I split the burger with my dog, and he loved it. But then again, he eats tissue paper out of the garbage. Five Guys is worth a curiosity visit, but it's not a "destination" dining event by any means. Hawkins House of Burgers still remains at the top of my list in this budget category. The Hype! The Hype! I have been dying to try this place out since many places have raved about it. In addition, I was wondering what is so special about this place to have been rated the number #1 burger in the nation. This place definitely serves a MAN burger. I ordered the regular hamburger. It contains two burger patties that seemed to be quite fresh with their "ALL THE WAY" which are the regular condiments (grilled onions, lettuce, tomato, etc) to a burger. I have to say that it was pretty good, although I still think In and Out has a better burger because In and Out grills the bun as well while the buns from Five Guys taste like the buns from a store bought package meaning nothing special. Also, the burger contributes to a very messy eating experience as it is wrapped in aluminum foil and the burger juices can easily drip on you. On the other hand, their fries are very delicious, even better than In and Out. In addition, they have self serve wholesome peanuts....it is a novel idea but really neat. However, it will cost you way more than In and Out since the regular burger alone costs $5, the regular fries $2.50 and a drink....well I think it is probably another $2. They give you ample fries which fed the both of us. read more

When it comes to burgers, I'm hard to please. Usually they're "meh," or at most, "decent." This place is just "decent." In-n-out tops this for sure. But i like how Five Guys is fresh. My first experience, this place has not lived up to the name of IN-N-OUT. I got the little burger (one patty) and the patty was good, but there was just too much bun. It wasn't fantastic, but I think the bun to burger ratio wasn't right. The burger was pretty good but I couldn't really taste it next to the spongy bun. Next time I come here, I'll have to get the regular (two patty) burger. The Cajun fries were good! Just needed ketchup. But the portion was huge ! Ok, my second visit to 5 Guys was even better! Didn't think that was possible. But it rocks. From a fast food burger standpoint this is my conclusion: --In and Out has the best overall value... --Fatburger may have the best burger (maybe tied with 5 guys or slightly below) but WAY overpriced ($10+)... --Five Guys is the best overall taste and cheaper than the Fat! But they sure are greasy, so if you don't like that you may prefer In and Out. Glad to see one popped up in Culver City as I'm hardly ever in Carson. Hope they come to Hollywood soon. read more
