It materialized as a dainty sourdough thimble, capable of holding precisely three spoonfuls before collapsing into structural despair. He ate the "bowl" itself in quiet resignation; it tasted like regret baked at 350°F. For the price, we could have purchased an entire week's produce section, yet this meal left us both foraging the car for stray pretzels like urbane raccoons. The staff were nice, warm, efficient, and clearly innocent in this corporate theater of the absurd. The true culprit is upstairs, counting our greens while serving us air. In the past, I remember being able to bite the crossaint sandwich and the chicken salad filling would smoosh out. The amount of chicken salad for this visit was barely enough to taste and made the bite dry and very crossaint bread heavy. Also, unfortunately, the crossaint bread was a little tough, like that of a bit of stale bread. I also remembered the crossaint sandwich having lettuce and tomato on it. It started as a single neighborhood restaurant and has grown steadily. According to its website, and certainly from what I saw, it seems to focus on fresh, comforting American food and friendly service. Today there are about 14 locations across East Tennessee. We visited the Hixson location for a large family gathering. There is plenty of parking available, which made it easy for our group. It is a stand-alone brick building. The restaurant was clean and had a comfortable, welcoming atmosphere. There are a lot of seating options for different size parties and both inside and out. The staff was pleasant and our waitress was awesome. She handled our large party very well and was very attentive. They also did a wonderful job accommodating our mobility-impaired family members. I got a burger and fries along with an iced tea. The food came out quickly. It was hot and delicious. Everything about the meal was good. Overall it was a great experience for our family gathering. I definitely recommend Aubrey's in Hixson to other travelers or families in the Chattanooga area looking for good food and friendly service.
