Five guys is a nice little staple across the burger menus of america. Five guys have been around since Steve and Berry's out in Chicago Ridge near Red Robin. So this little neighborhood in "Chicago" I stumbled upon held a similar facing store with the name Five Guys as big day on the side of it. Strolling by, i decided to draw up fonder memories of a time I had no idea how lame five guys as a whole is. Private thought: ---you do know those articles all over the wall from some so called newspapers are not as true as you want them to be...five guys is a mess. and fortunately, I'm the girl who is comfortable wit the mess. First of all, all-of-the-things are offered to go on your sandwich and/or hotdog!!! !. I want alladat...and they gave it to me. I sensed some judgment tho when I requested all that they have to offer to go on my burger. When you just really want a burger , 5 Guys is a solid choice! It's clean and staff are nice. Don't make the mistake of filling up too much on peanuts while you wait for your fresh yummy burger. We just came here for the huge, rich milkshakes as our Oscar night indulgence. It is worth the $6 (did you order a $5 milkshake?) for the flavors/toppings. I got Oreo pieces, peanut butter and salted caramel. So good! The size reminds me of a small half pint of Haagen Daz! I saw bacon but it was not my red meat/pork day, so next time I'll give it a try. Went today for lunch here and had worst experience ever. I ordered a Cheeseburger and picked up in Mayo, Pickles, Tomatoes and Grilled Mushrooms plus cup of water. Man oh man is five guys wonderful. On cold nights, it's great to have a warm burger fill you up. I always get the bacon cheeseburger with everything (bbq, green pepper, jalopeno). The bun is amazingly moist and soft. Plus, the cheese, bacon, tomatoes, and everything else just comes together so well. Why pay more than $10 at a sit-down restaurant when five guys has everything that I'm looking for? Also, the cajun fries are good but not salty or crispy enough. Would have loved to have more of a crunch to them. The soda machines, however, make up for it. They have just about every kind of soda alive and their soda machines are just so fun to play with. Solid burgers, lots of fries, service meets expectations, pretty quick turnaround, and conveniently located near the 6 and Metra. Same menu as other Five Guys, and this locations makes them just as good. Lots of condiment customization (I recommend Bacon Cheeseburger with Ketchup and BBQ sauce). Fries are large, the medium size is enough to feed a large man like myself. I once ordered a large fry and the cashier wanted to make sure I knew how large it was. I did, and I finished it, and was very full the rest of the day. If you like ketchup with your fries get the regular kind, but I'd recommend trying the Cajun seasoning (won't need any sauce with it, could get salty so be aware of any packets of seasoning). read more

Where have I been? Just noticed this place opened! Checked it out and it was good. The ordering set-up is backward compared to other Five Guys, but whatevs. Everything was fresh, but pricey for a burger joint. However, you get a delicious burger and it is loaded with melty cheddar cheese! Yum-O! If you are on a diet, I suggest ordering the smaller fry and sharing. The large is way too much for two people! I'm not a fan of the high-tech soda machines, but they get the job done. Love the outdoor seating in the warm weather, too! Definitely going to be a splurge for us Hyde Parkers. I was suckered into trusting Five Guys with my burger needs after listening to an NPR interview with the Five Guys founder about how high-quality their burgers are, how carefully selected their potatoes for fries are, how salty and special their peanuts are. I had avoided this throughout my undergrad after one mediocre experience, yet here I was again, sitting at the crumb-dusted counter (keep in mind that your buttocks will be treated to uncomfortable plastic here), burger in hand. Not to sound like that fish from Spongebob, but there were so few pickles it felt like THEY FORGOT THE PICKLES. The burger patty was flat, like the cook making it looked at the meat and thought, nah, this customer doesn't need any burger in his burger. The bun was also flat and soggy. And the cheese seemed like that plastic cheddar cheese you get from your grade school's cafeteria. The moral of the story is, never trust an NPR interview with a chain's CEO bragging about how great their burgers are. read more

It's everything you except from a Five Guys. Loads of fries, juicy burgers, the smell of grilling in the air. No complaints here.

At 5 guys you know what you're getting. A big sloppy burger with a ton of toppings. The meat is well done but somehow still juicy. The fries are fresh and seasoned well. This is different than your average burger, you're getting a thin crisp on the outside that only a griddle can provide which seals in the juices nicely. This isn't a burger for "foodies" (always hated that word) looking for a nice blend of short rib and sirloin, and yes it lacks the complexities of said burgers but when you just want a good burger 5 guys consistently delivers. And it's funny to me some Chicaogans don't get the peanut thing. I guess being from the east coast, where 5 guys started, makes me privy to such knowledge but for those that don't know here's a little history lesson: one of the founders of 5 guys was a pretty vengeful dude and his ex-girlfriend from college, the love of his life, broke his heart by running off with their physics TA. She was allergic to peanuts so he decided to make sure she would never get to enjoy the delicious burgers, or even the friendly ambiance, of his restaurants so he mandated each restaurant carry over 5 tons of peanuts on its premises at all times. 5 guys may have a dark background but it's fries more than make up for that. read more

Using Yelp's star description, I'll have to go with a two star rating, my rating might give them three, because they seemed to be a friendly group. Other than that, I ended up here because Burger Point closes at 9 p.m., so after that there's not many choices in the not McD's but not a sit down place niche. Friendly cashier, but the music is so loud that she got my order wrong, so loud that I didn't hear her when she repeated it back, me being hungry and tired, just muttered back, yeah that's it. It did take a while for my order to come up, all I wanted was a cheeseburger and fries. Ended up with a double cheeseburger, with too much of everything put on it that it was sloppy. Since I wanted one burger, I ate half, problem solved. The fries that everyone raves about were greasy and soggy, I know this happens by the time you get home, fries are never travel well, however I ate a few out of the bag as I walked to my car, and they were that way from go. Bottom line, skip Five Guys, unless you're really hungry, have no food at home, it's past 9 p.m., nearby grocery stores are closed and don't have time to go to a sit down place. In addition, the fries are cooked in peanut oil. Fearing cross contamination with the rest of the menu, I hot-footed out. Nothing exceptional about taste of beef or the way burgers are grilled. Hot dog, on the other hand, is split and grilled on griddle, which is tasty. I liked the fries, and large fries is truly enormous (more than enough for entire family). Minus one star for only offering American cheese. Update: We've been back a few times since I wrote review. (What can I say -- options are limited and,as noted above, we like the coke machine.) Opinion of food has not improved. Music is played so loud that even my teenage daughter finds it intolerable. Been in Hyde Park for a year now, but this is the first time I've tried Five Guys -- I was not disappointed! Headed there for a quick solo dinner before working on a paper I had due, and it was a pleasant surprise. I got the double cheeseburger and regular friends, which were way too much for one person to finish. I do remember the cashier making sure I really wanted the regular and I had no idea how huge the portions were. If you're alone, definitely go for the Little fries. Burger was also very filling, and I only managed to finish half, and bagged the other half. But it was delicious - I saw them grill the patties right in front of me and got all the toppings on (free!). The mushrooms and tomatoes completed the tasty ensemble, making it delightfully juicy. I didn't even need to add ketchup into my burger! If you're alone I recommend you go for a single cheeseburger and little fries. If you're sharing with another person, a double cheeseburger and regular fries are a satisfying amount. Everything cost about $13 which is pricey taking into account that it's fast food. But, if you're looking for an upgrade on your burger - it's a step up from conventional fast food chains. read more

There is one of these by my house, so we decided to stop in at the one in Chicago, near University of Chicago. We were happy, as always. I usually get the burger, but this time I tried their hot dogs. The way they cook their hot dog means that I just have one more reason to go to Five Guys. It is slit down the middle and grilled. SOOOOO good. Then after adding on ketchup, grilled onions, pickles ad relish, it was as good as it gets. I really dislike boiled hot dogs, so the grilled hot dog was just outstanding. Son also order the hot dog and hubby ordered the little cheeseburger. Their junior cheeseburger is so filling, I never order their full size cheeseburger. The Little fries fed all of us, with lots left over as the guys didn't eat that many. They were seasoned well and weren't limp or greasy. The Free-Style Coke machine (yeah, cherry vanilla or orange Coke) and free peanuts just made things even better while we waited for our food to be prepared. The staff at Five Guys is always so friendly, much more than other fast-casual-food chains and this location didn't disappoint in that respect. They always seem genuinely happy to be at their jobs, serving you. I've not yet had a customer service person who was unfriendly, grouchy or completely bored out of their mind while they were serving me. Either they are all good actors or they just know customer service very well. The prices are in-line with the higher end fast-food chains. It was $24 for the three of us.
