It being July 4th, Independence Day, I thought it would be an appropriate day to enjoy a hot dog. Just ask Joey Chestnut! I'm not going to reduce my # of *s because we really enjoyed our food and beverages. But I do have to question what I had to drink. The board said it was an Ommegang Grande Tripel stout at 5.5 ABV ($9). That level of ABV would be reasonable for a stout, but the color of the brew was golden like a typical Tripel, and not dark like the typical Stout. The bartender gave us a sample, and it was full of flavor with my wife noticing the vanilla tones that were described by the bartender. I didn't initially identify any specific flavor other than delicious and different than I would have expected from a stout. I also would not take issue with the posted 5.5 ABV. HOWEVER, a quick reference to Ommegang online as I write this says that it is a Belgium Tripel and the ABV is 9. Yes, NINE ABV! I would definitely have noticed if I were drinking a 9 ABV on an empty stomach. I also would have noticed it driving the car after finishing a pint within one hour. For those familiar with Utah Phillips, "It was good though!" But on to the food. We ordered a shareable Tot-Chos ($12.99) consisting of tater tots, tomatoes, avocado, cheese sauce, pickled jalapeños, and chipotle aioli. These were very tasty and not too spicy, with crispy on the outside and soft on the inside tots. My wife ordered the Sooo Cali ($10.99) hot dog. The black angus beef hot dog is very tasty even before it is topped with wild arugula, tomato, avocado, crispy onion strings, and spicy basil aioli. The combined flavors work well together on the Kings Hawaiian rolls. My choice was to try the Hogfather ($10.99) - a pork bratwurst with bacon chipotle onion jam, chipotle aioli, and miso ranch. The bratwurst was delicious and again, the flavors worked well together. BTW, my wife had a Grimm Nothing But Citra ($8), an IPA that even I found acceptable. We really need to return here more frequently.

Bread has a nice crust on it. Loved it and will definitely be going back soon. They also sell deli meat and cheese by the pound. They have hot subs as well as cold. I just wish they were open a bit later than 5:30 pm as we sometimes work past this time and then cannot get a sub. It would also be great if their day off was Tuesday as most places in this area are all closed on Mondays so it would be great to have another option. Just throwing that out there. All that said, this is a wonderful deli and I hope they thrive for many years!

We had a small private room upstairs in this historic building with original wide wood floor boards and staircases. I ordered the Craic --grilled roast beef, sautéed onions, provolone cheese, horseradish mayonnaise on a baguette($18.00) which was served au jus. The beef was tender and the baguette was fresh. It was large so I ate have and took half home. Delicious! I also had the French Onion Soup (along with three others.) Sadly, it was spoiled for me by a completely soft/soggy bread slice (mush) below the cheese top. I quietly removed it from my bowl. However, the broth was flavorful. I remember it being excellent. Reason for 4 stars instead of five. My grandson enjoyed the Shepherd's Pie. Since he is a growing lad, he also had the well made fries. The three salads ordered were excellent. One salad had salmon, one had Buffalo Chicken, and one had beets and goat cheese. Generous amounts of protein were served. The children enjoyed the toasted cheese sandwich, Mac and cheese, and waffle fries. The Wings were good. The extensive menu is easy to read with a variety of exciting food choices available. Always something new to try!

So whatever happened with the Friendly's that weren't shut down, under private equity management post-bankruptcy, is mostly working. The quality of the food at our last few locations has been really good. The service here was quite good, although the servers were still just a wee bit overworked, it could not have been nicer or more solicitous. What struck us coming back to this particular location was two things: first, the food is much, much better. Fish sandwiches with real fish filets! French fries that tasted like real potatoes! Cole slaw with a (drum roll) unique flavor (we couldn't nail it down, the secret ingredient was vaguely mustardy). Gazing around at other diners' plates, we saw really good presentation, and nice portions. The second thing is they are definitely spiffier. A lot of the locations had a sad, threadbare look to them a few years back. This one, like the one we went to in Connecticut last year, looked fresher and less desperate, while managing to still look like every Friendly's ever. They haven't really done a re-skinning: they just put some effort into cleaning things up and replacing old fixtures. The tables and silverware were clean and the restrooms spotless. So, the not-so-wonderful aspects. First: while we had really great service being seated and taking our orders, the kitchen is s-l-o-o-o-o-w. This seems to be the MO at every Friendly's these days -- great front of the house service, backed up kitchen management. We were actually split into two parties in two different sections, and one of us had to wait a half hour between order and food and the other nearly 40 minutes. That is probably unacceptable to most people, but we were on a quite relaxed pace this particular evening so it did not rankle much. That said, with half the tables empty, this really needs to be addressed before we can say we're back to good-old-friendly's. Second: no big surprise, the prices are up from the last time we were here. Basically they are 50% higher -- two people ordering less expensive plates and no beverages other than table water was more than $30, tip not included. The other table in our party was closer to $20 a person. I may just be getting old, but that seems like a lot. However, the internet tells me the average for all food prices is up 42%, and there have been some labor law changes as well, so....technically I can't complain, because adjusted for inflation, these are the same prices we paid for the same meal 12 years ago. I will put it this way: Friendly's is safe once again for those going with nostalgia in mind, and little kids adore it (they were in most parties that were not seniors getting their senior discount). Whether it's a go-to place when you want diner style comfort food again remains to be seen. But I do want to give them kudos for improving, and if you have been turned off in recent years, take a look at this location and check it out. Just be prepared for a long wait from the kitchen.

There's 4 handicap parking spots in the front of the restaurant, and when they are full (which they were when we arrived), it is a lot tougher for folks who need assistance to get in. The sloping part of the sidewalk is the part farthest away from the entrance. There's also not a lot of space inside near the hostess table to wait if it actually ever fills up here. Once we were seated, it was a lot better. Our waitress did a great time getting to all the tables on which she was waiting, without missing a beat. There was a second lady there as well, but I could not tell if she was a waitress, a hostess, or maybe the manager. She was definitely helping, but it didn't seem like she had any specific tables. I have no idea how many times their menu has changed in the many years since we've dined at a Friendly's. This menu was pretty streamlined, with many familiar entrees. But gone are the senior options and the free dessert ice cream options. Then, again, seeing that ice cream cones started at $4, maybe ice cream isn't something they're comfortable giving out at reduced prices any more. Our meals were actually quite good. Mom said she really enjoyed her bacon cheeseburger. My crispy chicken sandwich had a filet which was maybe a bit thinner than expected, but it was definitely crispy, accompanied by pickles, and fresh lettuce and tomato. We were able to substitute cole slaw for fries with no issues. Even though everything on the menu is designed to be prepared fairly quickly, it's definitely not someplace to come if you're in a rush.

Having this place close has spoiled us; the deli and prepared foods make cooking virtually unnecessary. The fresh-made takeout is also delicious. The shelves have plenty of fresh and unique ingredients and I love being able to order exactly what I need at the butcher counter. This is a delightful, friendly neighborhood butcher and specialty grocer. Often just walking through inspires my creative side.
