Five Guys is yet another burger chain that some people claim is better than In-N-Out, so I wanted to give it a try. I came here with Jin C. on Sunday for lunch. The location is pretty convenient, mid-Wilshire, and the building has a parking garage that provides 1 hour free parking with validation. For some reason our ticket didn't want to be validated so we actually had to go back and forth three times after our meal to get it re-validated until it finally worked (there was no parking attendant present). What Five Guys offers that can be seen as "better" than In-N-Out is that you can customise your burger by adding as many of their 15 free toppings as you want. They also offer seasoned fries as well as complimentary peanuts. I ended up getting a Cheeseburger with Mayo, Lettuce, Pickles, Tomatoes, Grilled Onions, Ketchup, and Relish. There was only a little bit of relish in the middle of the burger, so to me it was as if it was not even there. The thing that stood out to me about this burger was how forgettable it was. It was just your average restaurant-style burger. It's larger than the one at In-N-Out, but that's about it. Like Jin said to me, if you were doing a blind taste test for burgers, she would not be able to tell you where this burger came from. In-N-Out's burger, on the other hand, is very distinctive, probably because of their delicious spread. We got "little" fries in both Five Guys Style and Cajun Style. We were both not sure why the former is called "Five Guys Style" since it was just normal fries--at least the Cajun Style ones offer seasoning. Jin prefers the fries here since they're thick-cut, but I'm happy with In-N-Out fries (as long as they're at least light well). We both paid about $8 total, which is a lot more than you would pay at In-N-Out. So our consensus at the end of the meal was that while we did have a good meal, it does not compare to In-N-Out at all. However, if you are in this area and craving burgers, this is not a bad place to go. While this is obviously not a place with waiter service, the staff do go around from time to time asking if there's anything that you need. Their bathroom is also clean so that's a plus. read more

I've heard a lot haters bashing five guys but the burgers are pretty good, definitely better than McDonald's or Burger King. Five Guys Burgers would get a 4 star rating for me if it weren't for the music. They play loud, REALLY LOUD, rock music, both classic and newer. I like Billy Idol, but I don't want to dine to him rebel yelling full bore in my ear. As a take-away burger joint, however, this is a pretty good place to go. I tend to go here because it's conveniently located and the burgers are good. So, I found out a large burger is just double the patty so we each (boyfriend and I) got two small burgers and an order of cajun fries. Their portions for their fries are huge but I was disappointed on how soggy and soft their fries were. I like them a bit crispy and this was just really disappointing. The burgers were ... meh. Yes, they were fresh but that's about it. I do like that you can add your own topping choices but I almost feel like it's a gimmick to try and hide just how bland their burgers are. Overall the burgers were just "meh" ... I could purchase seasoned patties from the market that taste better. Not only that but just the amount of grease kind of grossed me out. Meh. Just meh. Passed by today to pick up some stuff from Ralph's and decided I HAD to try it on my way back because this from Chicago was always raving about this place. Had the little bacon cheeseburger and cajun fries. (Little just means single patty instead of the regular double.) Beef was juicy, the toppings were awesome (grilled mushrooms and onions for free? I may be insane, but I tried five guys and they taste like the average burgers you get at a church BBQ. Boring grocery store buns, bland meat, decent fries. Prices really aren't special. It shouldn't be compared to in n out because 1) its slow. Not in and out... 2) Burger style is different and inferior ... and 3) in n out is just incomparable ;D they recently opened one around the corner from where I live. Can't really go wrong with Five Guys. This is how a burger should be. Fat, loaded and greasy. I always suffer from food coma after one of these babies and follow it up with some coffee afterwards. A Red bull if I'm feeling daring. I usually get the Bacon cheeseburger, loaded with seasoned fries. The Little Burger is actually pretty big, so don't let it hurt your ego when your order it.. unless your girl orders the regular, then you just have to suck it up son. I also like to make a custom sauce mix comprised of ketchup, pepper and vinegar. My friends think I'm crazy but it's delicious. I was really disappointed with this place. I remember having it in Pennsylvania and was IN LOVE with it but somehow this place isn't the same. I got the bacon burger with everything, jalapeno peppers, BBQ sauce and hot sauce. The burger had 2 patties, but just really... GREASY, MESSY, and difficult to eat. The patties were just... bland. It was a big sloppy thing that was difficult to eat. Everything had the same texture in my mouth. The bacon wasn't crispy and the top bun was actually COLD. Not even room temp... COLD. I do like how there are all those different toppings that you can put on the burger but at the end of the day... if the burger isn't good, it doesn't matter what extras you can put on it. I'm actually a huge fan of their burgers but for some reason the 2-3 times i've had them in California, it was not nearly as good. So in terms of this location, the place is convenient, clean, and you have to love their all-you-can-eat peanuts (unless, you're allergic to peanuts - poor people can't even step into a Five Guys restaurant). Don't even think about looking at the nutritional information on the board! The cheeseburger is customizable. I go for the lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, ketchup and mustard, and jalapenos. The jalapenos are fresh (not pickled) and have some welcome heat to them. The little board tells you which local farm the potatoes are from. It's all delicious, but the prices kill me. I still find it hard to believe that Five Guys was rated best burger and best large fast food chain in the 2012 Zagat fast food survey. Great location on Wilshire. Sunday is free street parking. The A/C is always nice and cold. The workers here are friendly. You will probably spend about $25 on average for two people. I don't eat meat so I got the veggie sandwich with cheese--it basically was a grilled cheese with one pepper and a few onions on it. Was a little bland, and tasted "fine" but certainly didn't hit the spot. Something was missing. The fries were good, but still left something to be desired. Bottom line: i will not be back here. I come here often because I live just down the street. 5 Guys is no In-n-Out (but maybe I'm just biased), but it's a welcome addition to the area in terms of fast food. I'm thankful for their option of the little burger, since the regular-sized ones are usually too big for me. I've always found the customer service here to be stellar. The employees are noticeably friendly, cheerful and helpful. I like that this place is in walking distance from my apartment. I still don't understand the comparison to In 'n Out. A burger from here is pretty tasty and I admire the options to load your burger with mushrooms and jalapeños and the almighty A1 sauce. But when it comes down to it, I would still drive to the In 'n Out in Culver City or Hollywood. I did enjoy the cajun French fries and I loved the fact that they had malt vinegar available. I've only been here once so I haven't tried everything on the menu just yet. I guess I should give Five Guys a chance. It's a good classic burger but not the best and definitely not impressed. Seasoned patty, crispy bacon, grilled onions served on a fresh warm sesame bun. You can order a single or double patty. No additional charges for your topping which I appreciated. It was flavorful but not something I'm rushing back for seconds. I prefer "Pie n Burger" in Pasadena if I'm ever craving for a classic burger. I think I had really high expectations with all the great reviews I've heard about this place. A bit too much for me. Also didn't realize the fries were so big for a regular size. You might want to go with a small.
