Every couple of weeks or so I go to FIVE guys on Shelbyville Road near the I-265 exchange in Middletown. KY to get take out for my wife and I. She gets the cheeseburger sans bun wrapped in lettuce and I go for the hot dog which is more like a brat-wurtz. I order a large fry and it turns into 2 when they add all the extra fries (my kids call them 'baglers'). I also grab condiments and several scoops of the dry roasted peanuts. Although the price approaches $25, it beats the heck out of all the local fast food chains in volume and flavor; I wouldn't call it gourmet though. It's a bit greasy so grab plenty of napkins. Not your ordinary fast food place. The reason for that is that this place is a tad pricey for burgers. They also have their peanut oil and bags of fries in front of the store, I have never seen this at any restaurant I've been to. I chose to eat inside. There were a few dirty tables, the place wasn't very busy and I'm sure someone could have came out and wiped down some tables. I did manage to find a clean table to sit at. Now onto the food. They grill their burgers where you can see and don't use microwaves. The fries are also made fresh. You will experience a little bit of a wait since everything is made to order. I didn't mind the wait. Once I receive my food, it's handed to me in a bag, that's when I notice the other customers there received theirs in a bag. I did not see one tray in the store which to me is odd. That would explain some of the messy tables in the place as well. I do plan to return at some point in time, just not sure when. read more

From the metric ton of peanuts that's present in every store to the oversized fries (cajun, please!) you always know what you're getting when you visit Five Guys. One of the things I both like and dislike about Five Guys is menu choices. I love that you build your own burger. The menu is a list of items to add to your burger as you choose. There are no pre-defined menu items. You get to build your own bridge. At the same time, sometimes my brain doesn't want to be a bridge builder, it just wants to look at a menu and pick a number. You have two choices for fries: Regular and Cajun. Jim's handy tip: Get The Cajun. And be hungry. You'll get more fries (even when order a small) to feed 8 or 12 people. I'm not joking. (ok...exaggerating maybe). The fries are cut fresh from fresh potatoes in the store several times a day, which makes them just about my favorite. We've visited this location a number of times and it's always been a good visit. The staff is always hustling to keep the food moving and trying to keep up with the dining room. On occasion things have been low (drink lids, straws), but they're quite to rectify those issues. We've never encountered a problem and the order-taker can answer any questions you may have. The red and white decor is fun and harkens back to the soda fountain/burger joint days when people wore paper hats and aprons. The overhead music is a good blend of old and new, and is not too loud. The walls are decorated with newspaper articles from across the country singing Five Guys praises. Five Guys burgers are cooked when ordered, not like some other places. Sure, it's going to take you a few minutes to get your food, but you'll know that it's fresh because you can watch the entire process. Not all burger places give you that kind of visibility. Now that I think of it, with the massive amount of fries you get they could easily change the name of this chain to Fries Guys and no one would notice (other than the sign makers). :) read more

Normally my order is always right, fresh and delicious, but this time it was subpar. I ordered the Little Bacon Burger, but I got home and there was no bacon to be found. That's not the only reason why I gave three stars. I ordered grilled peppers, and there were raw green peppers on my burger. All of my toppings(except bacon) were there (and the Cajun fries) which is why I gave them three stars. They were also pretty busy, so I'm being a bit gracious. What is more fun then comparing the top burger places to one another? Five guys, In and Out, Shake Shack? Which one is better?? Five Guys has always been my number one favorite for Fast Burgers! From the moment I walked in and ordered to the moment I took my first bite to when I walked out I liked my experience. The food is made right in front of you to see if you were ever curious and the fries... oh man the fries are such a big portion so get the smallest one! My boyfriend and I shared fries and we couldn't even put a dent in how much they give us. I do feel very wasteful that I couldn't eat it all but you really get a bang for your buck when it comes to the amount they give you. I would recommend to eat your burger there because once you make that travel to some place and open up the foil to look at your burger it is now more on the soggy side.. but that could be because I like to put the grilled mushroom and onions on there. But nothing is better than taking a bite from a freshly made burger and dipping the enormous fries into ketchup! read more

Mmmmm, great burgers! There are so many toppings to choose from! I am partial to a little cheeseburger with lettuce, pickles, mustard, sautéed mushrooms and A-1 sauce. They also have onions, both raw or grilled, green peppers, jalapeño peppers, relish, bbq sauce, hot sauce, Mayo, ketchup and tomatoes. I probably forgot something! The burger/cheeseburger is a double patty so you have to be careful how you order. I just want one patty. The meat is cooked through. The bun is soft but not mushy. The fries portion is enormous and they fill the cup and then dump a whole lot more in the bag, even on the little fry. I wish I had remembered to ask for the fries crispy but that salty hot fry is delish! Food is cooked to order but comes up quickly. The fella was craving a burger, specifically from Five Guys. I'm game! It has been quite sometime since I have been to a Five Guys and it might be a while before I go back to one. Nothing was bad exactly, but I was a little surprised just how expensive our meal was considering how casual the place is. I ordered after my guy and wasn't totally paying attention to his order. He got a double, so when I ordered my cheeseburger, the person taking our order I guess just assumed I was also getting a double. I never specified, because I was focusing on what my toppings would be. And I would think ordering a cheeseburger would get you a single...but anyway. It just ended up being way more food than I needed. Like I said it tasted fine, actually hit the spot quite satisfyingly. We got a large fries to share...with how much they give you, we could have shared a small and STILL had too many. The Fella wanted it with cajun seasoning. It was just a liiiiittle too hot for me. Like...I just felt the heat of the spices rather than any additional taste from them. That was disappointing. Overall, if someone wanted to go to Five Guys with me in tow, I wouldn't fight too hard. My first experience with Five Guys was a few years ago on a trip back from Florida. Everyone in the car was hungry after driving a few hours. We exited the interstate somewhere in Georgia & the only thing remotely worth trying was Five Guys. In that situation, for me, Five Guys is perfect! At this location... The food is still satisfying, but with so many other burger options in the city, I probably won't be going to this location that often if at all. While the burgers are good, they definitely should have a buck or 2 shaved off their total price. One way to cut down on the price if you go as a pair... order your burgers, and split a medium or large fry. They give you so many fries that's it's useless to order 2 small orders. Side note: The fries normally come in a cup, but they overfill the cup which in turn causes fries to fill up a 1/4-1/2 of the bag. When I'm on Shelbyville Road/Frankfort Ave & need a burger, I'll pass over this place all day for Home Run Burgers & Fries or Bluegrass Burgers. read more

Alright, it's a chain burger joint and they don't pretend to be anything else. If you are familiar with their menu and you know what and how to order, it's not bad. I like the set up of this place, and the ability to really customize your meal. I went with the little cheeseburger with grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, jalapeno peppers and BBQ sauce. Was pleasantly surprised to see the jalapenos are fresh rather than pickled! And dont be fooled, the "little" cheeseburger is no slider, its a good size burger. I also got the cajun style fries which I dont know if I would get those again.Yes, fresh potatoes, YES you get a lot! But there was too much seasoning and the fries were soft, as though they had been steamed, which was not possible in the 24 seconds it took me to go from pick up counter to table. I love Five Guys, this location comes with a side of what I don't like at a restaurant: chatty staff. If you've not been to five guys they have a very streamlined process. Everything is made to order and while they have several predications of the burger they are limited in what they offer beyond burgers. This is fantastic because they're doing a few things very well. That's what I like in a place that serves something like burgers. I also like their fries that are made that day, and cut that day, presumably right before they're cooked and shortly after you've ordered them. I am a big fan of fries and they give you a lot of them so even if you share a small with a friend or fellow misanthrope it's still a lot of food. The only reason I am hesitant to go here is that I always - at this location - get cornered by a lonely or chatty employee. I am not an interesting guy and when I eat out of the house I am usually meeting up with someone I want to talk to. Maybe I need to learn to be more compassionate but I am not there to hear someone's life story, I am there to eat a burger. It happens there every time I go. I guess if I wanted to talk to someone no one would be around. Who knows? The most recent visit I was treated to a story about how my employer - who I am very fond of - is an idiot and doesn't know what he's doing. I had a hard time not interrupting and saying, "I am a self-employed contractor." Their burgers are okay, their fries are great, but I have a hard time giving Five Guys more than three stars because there isn't anything exceptional about this restaurant or this location. Usually if I want a good burger, I get it from this place. I don't like my burgers crazy thick and this place offers the right size of burger for me. The lil bacon cheese burger with Cajun fries is the way to go. After being snowed in for so long I was happy to finally get out of the house and get rid of my cabin fever. I've only ever been to a 5 guys one other time in my life (and that was a long time ago) so I decided to try them out again to see if I would like them this time around and I am glad to say that I did. The service was okay. Had no problems with anyone behind the counter at all. The only problems I seemed to have were with one kid who tried to take our order away from us and that was about it. The place gets crowded after 6 so you might want to get there a little early if you can. Otherwise there will be no where for you to sit and you'll have to get take out. Luckily I got there just in the nick of time! Now the real question is: Will I ever go back? My answer: Nope. Don't get me wrong, the food is amazing BUT... There's a Home Run burgers right down the street and Home run is definitely cheaper than this place which is a home run knock off. You get the same amount of food here that you get there. If I could rate this location a ZERO I would. I waited 33 minutes for an online order. It was just a little cheeseburger with mayo and a banana shake. I usually give extra time for my order to be fixed but 33 minutes is unacceptable especially when there are people with numbers higher than mine getting their orders. I asked the black guy with the locks how much longer for number 42 he said he just got in. I heard him mumble under his breath he can't read minds. I said I know you can't read minds just give me a refund. The one black guy in there that refunded my money is usually kind. Also there are flies everywhere and that is really disgusting. I love a great burger, and will try any place in my quest for the perfect patty. The great weather this Saturday gave me an opportunity to ride my bike up to my local 5 Guys, a place that I hadn't gotten a chance to visit yet. Bonus points to this location for providing a bike rack in the front, where I could park my set of wheels! Although it's located on busy Shelbyville Rd, this location is set back from the street a ways and has some great outdoor seating. I scoped out a table before stepping in to place my order. As for the grub, I got a little bacon burger in a lettuce wrap and a drink; I skipped the fries this time, mainly because I wanted to sample the burger and had been warned that a better name for a small serving of fries is "huge". All toppings are free, so I added some tomato, jalapeno peppers, onions, hot sauce, and mustard to my patty. The drink station is one of those Coke dispensers with a touchscreen, so it has almost an endless variety of beverages to choose from. After grabbing my drink and getting my burger (took just about 2 minutes to make), I headed outside for my first bite. Yum at first bite! The patty was juicy, flavorful, and a taste and texture that screamed 100% real beef. A juicy tomato, crispy onion and tang of hot sauce and mustard rounded out my perfect bite. I tried to savor it all, but must admit that I inhaled it. With a great location, outdoor seating to enjoy the beautiful weather, and fast service on a tasty bite, this place has my vote for a great burger! read more

Convenient location on Shelbyville Road. Parking can be a bit awkward when busy. On this visit on a moderately cool afternoon in March (temperature in the 50's) the temperature inside may have been only a couple degrees off from the outside. We zipped up the coats and warmed up with the usual good burger and a bag o fries. Five Guys is Five Guys pretty much everywhere you go. This Five Guys is by the best ran fast-casual restaurant I've ever stepped foot into! I've been in fast food management for two years and retail management for four, and the St. Matthew's Five Guys is the epitome of good customer service. To put this into perspective: imagine walking into a Chick-Fil-A, except no robots; no scripts. These guys and gals are genuinely happy and excited to come to work every day! You will hear employees communicating every step of an order while cheering one another on. GENUINE smiles and pleasant greetings! The food is all cooked to order (from what I observed) and the service is fast and efficient. Sam, the General Manager said he has been at this location for six months now, which would explain why I've been blown away by consistent over-the-top service for several months. 5 guys is a pretender in the fast casual arena. They make a 1 star burger with a 3 star price. Their fries are soggy and bland instead of crispy and seasoned. The restaurant was clean - but in the way that a warehouse is clean. Not disgusting but definitely not spotless. Also, the noise level prevented my party from enjoying a decent conversation. The acoustics in the building need work. There is very little value to be had at this restaurant. I would recommend one of the many other burger joints in Louisville. Pass on 5 guys in favor of virtually anything else. read more

Anytime I am in the mood for a burger the way I want it, I go to Five Guys. The service is always fast and cooked to order, and they do a great job making my burger exactly the way I like it: Bacon, mushrooms, cheese, and BBQ sauce (although they could benefit from upgrading their BBQ sauce) I personally enjoy the heaping amount of fries they always give you. It is funny to me that you ask for a small fry, and get twice as many fries as the small container will hold! They are always piping hot too. This location is also kept very clean! Every time I have dined here, it seems that the employees have done a good job wiping off the table, mopping the floor, and taking pride in the cleanliness of their restaurant. My only complaint is that they have the new drink machines that you select the flavor/drink you want and it mixes it for you. On multiple occasions, these machines were out of stock for multiple flavors and basic drinks. Maybe they had been recently slammed both times, but I wouldn't pay for a drink if I can't get the drink I want! Overall, I will always recommend Five Guys as a decent place to get a good burger made with all the "stuff" you want on it! read more
