Five Guys. DUH. Fries, fat burgers and free peanuts. Done.

Of my long list of vices, one of my favorites would have to be emotional eating. Some turn to alcohol, drugs, or cigarettes (or all of the above) when stressed. Me, I go for a double cheeseburger and brown paper bag full of fries. This is most likely why I'm not currently rocking the Matthew McConaughey in board shorts body, but I digress... As this 5 Guys is a hop, skip, and jump from the Yelp office, when I'm having one of those days (which, granted, are few and far between, I mean, everyone knows I have the best job ever), I head right here for a mean shot of beef, potatoes, and grease to cure what ails me. And this location has everything the 55th Street one lacks so I can give it that extra star: an open bright space and a friendly staff, while still maintaining everything I love about this new burger chain: unlimited free toppings, those amazingly spiced fries, and yummy, yummy patties of beef. Eh...NEXT. ***** The Expanded Version: Yes, I'll be the ten thousandth person to say "whoever said "In-N-Out of the East Coast" is seriously smoking some good crack." Not even just "good," but like....Whitney Houston-caliber. Please, Five Guys and all you East Coast crackheads...do not insult us native Californians with your pitiful excuse of a burger and fries and compare it to In-N-Out. Customizable toppings pulled me in, but when I get a burger that is double-slathered with mustard (what part of "light mustard" do you not understand...??) -- with so much mustard, in fact, that I think the mustard may have had a greater volume than the actual beef patty -- no amount of grilled mushrooms or hot sauce can get me back across that threshold. The fries have a pleasing texture, but when you say "Cajun," I'm expecting "spice-AY." What I got was..."oh...I think there's something other than salt on these fries." Overall...a hella big disappointment. I know what I'll be eating when I go back to San Francisco for July 4th (hint...it starts with "Double" and ends with "Double"). read more

I'm not from California, but I do know burgers. Boy do I know burgers. Five Guys does not compare to In-N-Out. As a matter of fact, I'll even go as far to say that Five Guys isn't even Wendy's. We came to Five Guys late Saturday night, because we were craving some fried chicken. That's right, fried chicken - let me keep explaining. So I, being the food genius that I am, said that maybe our appetites can be quenched by a burger at Five Guys. But in the meantime, there was a chicken place across from Five Guys that we went to first. My craving for a burger was too much so I went back to the burger place. I'll say this: for a place that calls itself "Five Guys" there were actually five guys behind the counter. Okay, only two of them were actually working but at least they weren't falsely advertising. I had the little bacon burger, and it was okay. Granted, I made the mistake of not ordering toppings so its partly my fault. But the burger itself should still be tasty, yes? Well it was but again, it was just okay. My fries were pretty good. I love fries that still have the potato skin on it, and are sliced rather thin and with alot of salt. And what's this: free peanuts? I don't get it but hell, I'll take it. But let me ask everybody who's been here this: was it me or were the floors of the place really, really slippery? Zagat survey rated 2001 thru 2008. For all the hoopla, and boldly posted red on white bill boards on the interior walls, this place is overrated. Hot dog is tasteless, with no snap, like those little canned sausages. And I would guess high cholesterol and tasted oily. No sour kraut option, though a variety of toppings is included for free. I selected grilled onions and mustard. There is also mayo, relish, onions, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, grilled mushrooms, ketchup, jalapeno peppers, green peppers, A-1 sauce, BBQ sauce, and hot sauce. Fresh ground beef, never frozen burgers were well done, and not greasy. We came by here because my little nephew wanted the grilled cheese with tomato, I didn't try a taste. The cashier that helped us was nice and cheerful. From the other reviews, it sounds like the double cheeseburger is the way to go, with the unlimited toppings. When Seamless didn't deliver my order from Five Guys tonight, I called both them, & then Five Guys directly. Richard, the manager, was extremely professional. He called Seamless himself to find out what the delay was, then created a fresh, hot new order when my husband had to go get the original order, since my original order had been sitting there for some time awaiting Seamless pickup. Among the hoards of eateries in Greenwich Village is Five Guys and I love coming here after much drinking nearby or playing ping pong at Fat Cats. It's odd that this location is linked with a bar upstairs but it's cool, too. I just love drowning my fries with malt vinegar so I love Five Guys for that. The place is kept reasonably clean, staff are always courteous but the bathroom is nasty. Only use if desperate. read more

Whaaaaaaaack! Okay ok ... maybe they make a good burger but I don't eat beef. How would I know? How could I ever know what all the hype is about? Is this some pseudo version of In'N'Out? Gotta laugh at how many people are comparing Five Guys to a burger they got in another city and saying "I expected better from a New York burger place." Five Guys isn't a New York-based restaurant, it's a chain with outlets in more than 30 states. So saying "they have better burgers in California/Texas/etc." is kind of meaningless. That being said, they have the best burgers I've ever tasted, if a bit expensive and messy. I'm not quite sure what kind of standards people have when they go to a burger restaurant, but personally I don't expect much more than a hamburger patty that doesn't resemble a hockey puck in appearance and flavor, and that my a** doesn't explode after eating it. Five Guys more than surpasses those standards. I only eat there every few months or so because I want to continue fitting into my clothes, but nevertheless they're just fine by me. read more

Wow, I was pretty disappointed with the taste of this burger. I expected a lot from this place only to be let down by a dry burger and a bun swimming in its own sauce. Relying on their sauce to save this patty just became overkill. Compared to other burger places like Wendy's or BK, it was much tastier than theirs by a large margin, but Shake Shack and/or Chumley's is still my all time fav's. Can a burger joint take their crown? We'll have to wait and see....till next time, same bat time, same bat channel! read more

This came highly recommended by friends so I had to try it before leaving NYC for good. There's just a simple burger menu here: you choose between a single or double patty hamburger, cheeseburger, bacon burger or bacon cheeseburger, and then decide what toppings you want. There's also a good variety of unlimited toppings for you to add to your burger! I got a little cheeseburger with lettuce, pickles, tomato, grilled onions, relish, ketchup, mustard and hot sauce, with a side of small Five Guys style fries. I would describe the burger as tasting like simple, no-frills fast food. And as everyone says - the amount of fries they give is super generous - there really is no need to order a bigger size as they fill not just the cup with fries, but also the entire bag! read more

Really liked this place, had a great experience. Excellent classic American burgers and fries. Burgers are made with good ingredients. The fries are really exceptional. They are not super crispy but are crunchy on the outside and warm and soft on the inside. Perfect potato, salt, and seasoning flavor. I really dislike extra thin fries that are super crunchy since in that situation it just taste like you are eating something fried with no other flavor, but certainly not the case here. The seasoning on the fries is exceptional as well. There was a mistake with my order- they gave me a plain cheeseburger without grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, or bacon, but they fixed it right away. I was allowed to keep the plain cheeseburger as a consequence of their mistake. Loved that they owned up to it immediately and took care of it. Finally, the people behind the counter were exceptionally friendly, polite, and provided great service. It's not an easy job to maintain such an excellent attitude all the time. If your company is hiring customer service people, I would strongly recommend reaching out (no joke, my old company John Deere would literally poach excellent customer service people whenever they had good encounters). read more

My nephews fave: plain cheese burger & fries! What else can I say. This place has one of the best burgers. Their prices are a little but pricey compared to other burgers but with the free roasted nuts.. Well it's reasonable. The staff are are friendly and nicer. The place is clean.. Ok vegetarians, I totally understand your cause and support you in every way! I even have friends who are vegetarian. I have even tried it! But you just cannot knock a place because they only serve meat. I mean, you have your own non-meat serving places! I cannot attack them for not serving meat. Ugh. I don't know... it just really eats me up inside. Anyways, sorry about that rant. Five guys has really really great burgers & hot dogs!!! The dogs are even better than Gray's Papaya's! They're THAT good. Fries have improved so much since they opened... they're worth it. Friendly staff respects everyone, especially their regulars. Why minus one star when I usually give 5 star reviews? The ambiance. Or rather, the total lack of ambiance. Bright fluorescent lighting + linoleum wood-look tables + tile floor = yuck. Let me preface this review by stating very clearly that I'm a disgusting fat glutton that enjoys eating fast food. In fact, I'm a little embarrassed by how disgustingly gross, overweight and hopeless I am. On the positive side, I think this makes me uniquely qualified to reveiw food. I like five guys....they give you free peanuts which brings me back to my youth going to the Ground Round with my idiot brother and filling up on peanuts. The burgers here are good...not as good as Shake Shack but definately as good as In n Out....In n Out is very average unless you are a doofus hhipster trying to act cool like you know something. We came out of a matinee show and we just wanted a bite to eat. It didn't have to be anything fancy. "Should we eat at Bleeker Street Pizzeria or Five Guys?" We decided on Five Guys and I was glad because I've never eaten here and friends were always raving how good the burgers were. The place is very spare with some chairs and tables in the front. You have to walk to the back to place your order. I ended up getting the "Little Hamburger" with tomatoes, lettuce, cheese, and mayo. Also got the large fries. It took a while to get my order since they cook them fresh when you order. Since we had nothing else to do. We sat down and helped ourselves to some roasted peanuts from the barrel. I went to the back and the guy behind the counter was laughing and asked, "Do you want to see how I show love?" I thought this was a bit odd since I had just met him, but I tried to keep my humor since it seemed like he was joking. So I said, "Sure, why not? This is my first time here." He said, "Okay" with a grin. He put the large french fry cup in the bag and then he shoveled in several servings. "Wow," I said to myself but then my big head deflated when I saw everyone else was getting the same treatment. When I sat down, I couldn't wait to sink my teeth into all the fresh goodness. And the "Little Hamburger" was not little. It was big enough for me and it tasted so fresh and juicy. It was one of the better hamburgers I had in a while. Now I thought the fries would be spicy since it said "cajun" on the board. It turns out you had to ask for "cajun" to get the cajun fries. So I was a bit disappointed, but they were good. A bit on the bland side that could have been helped with the addition of salt, but for some reason I forgot to do that. The "Little Hamburger" was $4.99. I think for a fresh hamburger that's pretty reasonable and you have to remember all the toppings are free. That includes tomatoes, lettuce, pickles, onions, cheese, jalapenos, bacon, grilled onions, mushrooms, green peppers. I'd definitely be back. I need to try those cajun fries. read more

Is it me, or are the fries in this particular Five Guys really oily and soggy? Came here after visiting a new friend's birthday celebration at Tortilla Flats (also very interesting, in a seizure invoking way). I had to duck out since I was getting drunk and was supposed to go to a burlesque show later, but decided against it. It was late and these days, socializing feels like a job. You never know when to leave until it's too late (this is what happens when you get a workaholic to work social jobs). Either way, I ordered a little cheesburger (which is a regular sized cheeseburger) with all the fixin's except for mustard and some fries. As I said, the fries are super soggy. I don't know if it's the staff member who were in charge of them, but I think the oil that they use just isn't hot enough. Also, although the cashier was nice to me, she was pretty rude to the other customers- mostly because I think she's really tired and needs a vacation. The burger was on point. I ate the entire thing there as it was closing up. It was 12am and they were nice enough to let me finish. Will definitely go back for the burgers. Not the fries. read more

I have been meaning to write reviews for awhile and this one tops the list. First of all: Can anyone say OVERPRICED!!! A cheeseburger and regular fry cost 12 dollars. 12 DOLLARS!!! This is not a restaurant, this is fast food. There is no reason it should cost this much and guess what?? In the rest of the US it does not. At a five guys in Fort Lauderdale, 2 cheese burgers, a grilled cheese, a regular fry, a large fry, and a drink cost me $20.12 cents!!! I don't care it is in Manhattan, that does not excuse the markup. This franchise should be shut down. What really bugged me to write this review though is that on my last visit, and I mean my last! I saw a cockroach crawl out from underneath the bathroom door and scuttle into the kitchen area. I shouted hey there is a cockroach and some employee looked at me dumbfounded and said sooo... Guess I better review this place before my arteries completely clog up and I die. Five Guys is alright, but by far not the best burger in NYC (see my growing list in the 'lists' section). As one person said - remember, this is a chain from DC, not a NYC burger place! Having said that, the burger is tasty, it's just on a different level. It's fast food, and it's chain food. So, you can't order it cooked the way you want it, and it's cooked too much. Good burgers should moo a little when you bite into it, and bleed on your plate (or tin foil wrap in this case.) The free additional toppings is a very good touch. I like things like bacon, onions, and mushrooms. The onions weren't what I expected from sauteed onions (they were more like the chopped onions you put on hot dogs) but they tasted good. Overall, if you want a quick, fast burger the place is great and I recommend it even over Shake Shack. But, if you want a real burger go just a few blocks away to Corner Bistro. It won't cost you much more, and you'll get a better burger cooked the way you want it. read more

A bit expensive, but otherwise a decent burger, especially for a chain place. Free nuts are a nice touch (hehe), the fries are good as well, and its rarely crowded which is a plus for me. Burgers are a decent size and aren't too greasy either. As far as a chain place goes, this is a great place to grab burgers; it isn't gonna blow your mind, but good burgers are pretty rare in Manhattan. I'm not sure how this place can get anything less than five stars. Burgers are slamming, fries are delicious and they give you the notable extra scoop with every order. You can choose your own toppings, snack on peanuts while you wait and the service is great.. What more do you want? I'll tell you what else, a bar attached to it.. Came here on a Thursday night and a buddy mentioned that this location actually has a bar upstairs. To my surprise, we walked through Five Guys to a door in the back that led us to a bar/lounge upstairs. What's even better is you can place a food order from five guys at the bar and have it brought up to you. Very chill vibe and truly one of those NYC gems that you'd never know about unless someone mentioned it to you. I stopped by to pick up a bacon cheeseburger-to-go for my brother. Of course, a burger for my brother meant only grilled mushroom and ketchup toppings. And of course, the one day I decide to treat him to a burger, he is no where to be found. So I consume the burger myself. After the 30 minute subway ride in my tote, the burger is a bit demented. It was also surprisingly small; in part due to all the missing toppings I would have ordered. But considering the fist-sized burger I had, I wonder what a "little bacon cheese burger" would look like. All that aside, the burger was really good! What more can I say? read more

Great food as always, the fries weren't as greasy as the other locations so that got them the 5th star. The prices were the same as Queens and Maryland, so that was awesome. Oh my God. I'm still drooling two weeks later. I've been meaning to write a review about this place ever since I ate there, but I just never found a way to make my words do this place any justice. And it's really not because of the service, which is as good as the next place, nor is it because of their customer-centric attitude - it's because of the burger. That juicy, succulent, tasty bit of heaven wrapped in foil. I loaded that puppy up with cheese, barbecue sauce, lettuce, onions, and pickles, and then got another for my cousin. Now, I hadn't seen my cousin in a while, and we had lots to talk about - and she was moving away for good, so we really needed to catch up on the family gossip - but nary a word was spoken. We just couldn't. Doing so would detract our focus from how good this burger was. I wish Five Guys would open in Boston. It's really the best grease-ball burger I've had since I got kicked out of Woody's in Beirut. read more

I wanted to believe the hype and get on the five guys' bandwagon, but after trying this location as well as the less appealing w. 55th st. location, I can't seem to make myself like these burgers. Yes, the meat patty, if that's what you can call it, is a loose formed piece of meat, two patties to a regular burger. And yes, you can get free toppings. My mushroom, pickle, relish, mustard and ketchup creation was a mouthful, but the meat lacks flavor and even with the toppings, the burger doesn't quite satisfy my tastes. The heaping bag of fries, the small size, is enough to split at a table or at least two hungry folks. These are not run of the mill frozen fries from out of a sack. The fries make the meal worth it. Keep in mind that the meal ain't cheap (well, not fast-food cheap). A small fry and regular burger with a soda costs over 12 bucks. The gratis peanuts are nice, but got a funky tasting one in my scoop. Anyway, I don't think it comes close to Shake Shack or the numerous bar/ pub burgers around, but it's a step up from regular fast food chains. read more

Finally!!! Five Guys popped my cherry!!! OK....get your mind out of the gutter.... A lot of my friends had spoken about Five Guys in Hoboken, and I just never quite warmed to the idea...I just thought in my head thta it would be a very snooty overpriced burger joint catered to the yuppies of today.... I went on a late night stint to the West Village location with my family, and BOY!!!! I was shocked of how GREAT these burgers are..... First of all, the burgers are made fresh on the spot, and they taste so good.....The unlimited toppings are free, and they cater to your requests without hesitation..... Their belgian style fries are hot off the fryer(I know...cholesterol heaven...but I didn't care!) and they were soooooo good...I dipped them in A1 sauce and some ketchup..... AMAZING!!! I really like the service at this 5 Guys. The workers are attentive, courteous and quick. As for the burger, it's good. I shamelessly admit I usually order the "little" burger which is just one patty with lettuce, tomato, onions, bacon and a little ketchup and mustard. So my co-workers and I was bored at work..and started talking about burgers and sandwiches...and great....we started talking about Five Guys....and of course i never had Five Guys! So they were shocked and told me i should, and that its declicious! So of course, lunch for that day was Five Guys, I ended up with Bacon Cheese Burger with fries. You can add unlimited toppings on to your burger, so i asked for alot of toppings which made my burger even bigger! :D The burger was yummy and flavorful, and definitely banging good! The fries was yummy.....the only bad part of the meal was my co-worker didnt know if i was a ketchup fan, and he only got me 2 cups of ketchup, and a cup of vinegar....whats?!!!!!!!! 2 cups?! I had a small burger with grilled onions, mayo, and BBQ. I would've gotten the grilled mushrooms and other toppings, but they didn't have. The grilled onions are amazing and I like the sesame bun. It's weird, but I'm comparing the place to Joe's Best Burger in Flushing. The patty was mighty weak, weirdly shaped and small. Joe's is better and this place is a bit overpriced with their burger. The fries were really good. A nice balance between crispyness and thick potatoeyness. The fries are a really good deal, big portion for the price. read more

Quick. Generous. Great spot. The service was fast and friendly. Had an great experience. The only five guys I will only go to.

SO SO GOOD. Ate there tonight after having cravings all summer, and it was definitely worth the wait! Unlimited toppings, first of all, is an amazing deal. My friend got the works (mayo, ketchup, mustard, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms) on a double cheeseburger and it was the most solid burger I've ever seen. I can't quite eat that much, but my regular cheeseburger with half as many toppings and it hit the spot (the grilled onions are seriously so bomb). We shared a large cajun fries (and they mean LARGE). The cajun seasoning wasn't as good as I remembered, and neither were the quality of fries. But Five Guys makes up for it by offering Malt Vinegar as a condiment, pretty much the only place in the city I know that does, save for fish and chip shops. Also, anywhere in the city that offers FREE REFILLS is a winner in my book. And so now, an hour later, we're still sitting here discussing how stuffed we are, but it hurts so gooood read more

Although not a fan of double pattied burgers, these burgers are DELICIOUS... so juicy! Had to take out a patty in my cheeseburger (if I'd really known, I would have gotten the "little burger" but from my recollection having 5 guys in Maryland, I didn't remember double patties). Love how the toppings are free and you can customize the sandwich. All the sauces are amazing, the cheese is nicely melted, and for that split second you forget that you just devoured an 850+ calorie monster (yes, the menus are labeled with calorie counts). The fries were also good fresh, but the large is way too big. We ordered 5 burgers and 4 large fries for a group of people and there were just way too many fries. Mountains of them. No frills place, not a huge line either. read more
