I didn't know what to expect from a burger place and wow was I surprised by the incredible burger they made for me! Walking in, you wouldn't know the joy they had in store. It was crowded, the tables were close together and the floor littered with peanut shells, but if you get past that, and into the burger, you're in for a treat! The burger was pretty expensive, like $7.50 and the small fries were close to 3 bucks, so we're not talking cheap. You start off by ordering the burger and then you tell them what toppings you want added, from mushrooms to jalapenos to A1 sauce! All included! I ordered a bacon cheeseburger with grilled jalapenos and mushrooms and Cajun fries. Yes, they have Cajun fries! My burger came out, wrapped in aluminum foil and my fries were in a cup, both piping hot! I've been looking for the best burger joint in San Diego and I think this is my fave so far. Oh, and the drink machine! Over 100 different flavors of soda! Where else can you get Mr Pibb Zero cherry vanilla? You have to try this place! read more

Really disappointed with the service at this location. I ordered two burgers to go and I live in Mira Mesa. I picked up the burgers drove home and when I got ready to eat my cheese burger and when I bite into it there's no patty. Only the veggies and bacon. What kind of person put this together ? How can they completely miss my burger bun. The other burger I got had two patties in it so I ended up taking a patty out. This is not what I expected from five guys. I used curbside pickup option ordered through an iPad, checked out as a guest and provided my email and phone number. When you do this you get an email similar to other restaurants it connects to your phones gps. After ordering I got a text saying to click the link when I am leaving. Thinking I'm helping I followed the link which sends you to their website specifically for your order. It asks you to hit a button when you're leaving your house/current location, then again when you arrive, and finally when you get your food. I used the buttons thinking all was good. After arriving at the restaurant and waiting for about 10 minutes (~15 minutes total) the website says it takes about 8 minutes to fill an order. I thought hey maybe they're just busy so I'll check and make sure they got my order. I called to make sure everything was ok and my order was being processed. The person who took my call said some thing along the the lines of "...ummm do we have an order for a Richard for online? [yeah] ok yeah we're working on it now." Definitely not ideal but cool. I hung out and listened to a podcast. Eventually it seemed like it was taking a long time again (certainly more than 8 minutes). In fact it had been another 20 minutes. I call again. I get the same guy and he said "the order went out." What?! No I'm in a black Subaru BRZ. "Well it looks silver from here" eventually I ask to speak to a manager. I speak with a woman who says that the food is ready and has been sitting on a heat lamp for basically the past 15 minutes (maybe the whole 30 minutes) it was a little confusing. She also mentioned that the online website/notifications don't work and reiterated something the gentleman before mentioned "no you have to call." HOW IN THE WORLD WOULD I KNOW TO DO THAT?! AND WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU HAVE AN AUTOMATED SYSTEM THAT DOESN'T WORK??? ALSO, I CALLED 20 MINUTES AGO. WHAT IS GOING ON IN THERE??? "You can talk to my GM if you like." Absolutely. At this point I'm about 35 minutes into waiting for $30 of FAST FOOD and I already pretipped 15%. If it weren't for the fact that I didn't pick the food I would have gone to literally any other restaurant. I should have never came here. I wait on hold for a few minutes for the GM, I'm guessing they are filling her in. She comes on the phone and apologizes that the automated system doesn't work. It's now been about 40 minutes and she says the food is ready. I ask her if it's been sitting out this whole time and she says pretty much. I ask her if she paid $30 for food if she would like it if we're sitting out for half an hour (even under a lamp). She says no and says they'll make me fresh food if I don't mind waiting more and apologizes for the inconvenience. She asks if that's cool and I say "yes. If that is how you're going to fix this situation I accept, but I'm not in anyway satisfied." She then responds that she'd like to put my name on the store so the next time I come in I can have "another comped meal." I tell her there's not going to be a next time and remind her that she never said anything about comping this meal to begin with. She begrudgingly says "well I can contact corporate but because you ordered online I can't refund you right now. It might take up to 3 days." Great let's do it. She then finished with "Is that what you wanted?" As if to say "are you happy now?" NO! If you make someone wait for 50 minutes to serve a customer overpriced fast food which they already mistakenly also tipped for because you have systems and ordering mechanisms that don't work, in what world is that acceptable? And if the only way you initially offer to rectify the issue is by apologizing and offering to make the food fresh, that is just saying hey we will honor the transaction that you already paid for 50 minutes ago. She could have offered something small in the beginning, $10 off, 50% off, a gift card, a free drink, ANYTHING. But she didn't offer anything except an apology and to remake the food. Again this is after already waiting 40 minutes and calling to check in on my food (2 times) just in case they missed my order, when honestly I didn't even know I had to do that because i was relying on the professional looking automated system. Anyway, the food was fine, but use caution if you use the online ordering system/curbside pickup. Apparently you're supposed to intuitively know that you need to call even though the order site will tell you otherwise. Lastly, if you want to order from this restaurant just pray there is not an issue otherwise the staff from the cashier to the GM will confuse the hell out of you and then try to gaslight you. Let me tell you about this place. This place has a guy by the name of Josh. This guy is a pure BALLER. Let me give y'all some background. Just got off swimming and I was hungry, I wanted a man's meal. So rather than go to in n out and buy baby burgers I came here. Now I love me some shakes but sadly they were out of banana so my boyn Josh gives the hook up and I got a kick ass BLT. Thank you so much. By the way shout out the Josh and his awesome personally. 10/10 would come in again with my friends, if I had any......:( But on a real note. Josh is an excellent employee. He's very respectful and polite, Im happy at the fact that he took my order and help me when there were no shakes. He was a quick thinker and a sold worker here. Custom made burgers with tons of ingredients to choose from. We love the Bacon Cheeseburger with Lettuce, Tomato, Grilled Mushrooms, Ketchup, Mayo, Pickles & top off all our burgers with A1 Steak Sauce which really enriches the flavor. They have Awesome Milkshakes as well. One of the employee recommendations was Peanut Butter milkshake with add ons of Oreo Cream & Oreo Cookie ended up tasting like Chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream. Super Tasty. Also the Coffee milkshake has bits of coffee ground pieces was a surprise & definitely gave me the caffeine I needed to stay awake. They have a custom soda machine with dozens of flavors we love their Cherry Coke. But you can get like 8 different flavors of coke: vanilla, lime, cherry, regular, diet, etc. Amongst many other options. Their Cajun Fries are awesome has a mild kick to it & you can ask for less seasoning or get it on the side if you are sensitive to heat & want to customize it to your liking. Pros-Great staff of kids busting their butts, friendly, efficient, smiling, busing tables with lightning speed. My 15 year old son says these are the best burgers ever and he would always choose this place over any burger in Poway, even In and Out. My husband thought they were just fine The burger meat itself was ok, well done and ok. Cons We all agreed the fries (which they had both enjoyed before) were limp and wet to the point that we trashed them after a few bites However, because I am the one writing this review, I have to say...soggy. I took my burger out as soon as it hit the table--we ate there. The grilled onions bits and pickles immediately slid out onto the foil :( I go to rebuild and there is my cheese in pristine just out of the package form sliding out the other way. I have a huge pet peeve about cheeseburgers with un-melted cheese. Melt the cheese on the single burger peeps!! Especially if you are going to put cold lettuce and tomatoes on top of it! I get the double burger semi melts the cheese for you but I am not eating that massive amount of meat. The bun was just too soggy to put it back together. I ended up picking through the pickle onion burger lettuce salad I was left with and throwing away my cold cheese . Not in any big hurry to return. I just will send the boys for their fix. read more

Five Guys vs In-n-Out?? Lets face it, In-n-out will always reign supreme. Five guys is good, their fries are respectable, their peanuts are free. However, their prices will be higher, and their portions a bit much for some. Where Five guys will fail on the west coast is: We already have a cheaper better option here. No drive thru, though I don't know if it would work for a place that doesn't thrive on fast service anyway.. It probably takes just as much time to get a burger at in-n-out during lunchtime rush as Five Guys during any slow period. Five Guys tries to live off their fresh; "Today's potatoes are from, such n such Idaho" Obama eats here, and their many nominations from various midwest, east coast publications you haven't heard of, reputation in the hopes it succeeds on the west coast. Don't get me wrong, they do offer toppings not many other places offer which is a big plus. In the end, west coast customers don't care where their potatoes come from, if the president has eaten there, or what no-named publication google can't even find gave you its endorsement. If its expensive and not worth the price, the people will eventually stop coming. I saw the San Marcos location go from crazy busy with tons of staff when it first opened, to little of either. The question is, whether Five Guys would have survived on the east coast, and been able to make this push westward if In-n-out was already established there. My answer is, probably not. read more

Ok so at first I was really mad at this place. Everything was expensive. It was SO not like In-N-Out. However, after giving this place a few more tries I've come to the conclusion that it is delicious! I wouldn't say its better than In N Out..its just a different experience. Things you have to know: 1. The regular burgers are really 2 patties. If you want just one patty, get a "little" burger. 2. The patties are probably 1/4lb--a lot bigger than In N Out burgers 3. Prices are higher, BUT you can add stuff like grilled onions, grilled onions, jalapenos, etc...for free! Take advantage! 4. Fries are pretty thick--not your average shoe string fries. If you're going to order, a medium or even small is enough for two people to share. Know that the fries will probably be a little soggy due to their thickness. 5. Peanuts are free! 6. There are tons of different soda choices. Raspberry COKE? Yum! 7. If you get a bacon burger, the bacon is super crispy just how I like it. 8. They don't have combos. You have to order everything separate. Share fries and drink if you can..saves some $$, you know? If you can, eat here. Take advantage of the soda machine. Its fun finding a bunch of different flavors of soda. Might be a little confusing at first, but you'll figure it out. I take a star away due to the peanut shells all over the floor. Someone sweep that up before we slip on them! Gotta work on your FOD! Other than that, the food is good :) read more

So now there's a Five Guys by me which is very dangerous for my waistline. Being that it's in the heart of nowhere-ville in Poway, it doesn't get a lot traffic. But that doesn't mean it's not good because it totally is. Naturally they have all the stuff you've come to expect from a Five Guys. There's the peanuts, there's the guy up front sighing as he waits for you to decide on your order and there's the space age soda fountain able to concoct every type of soda known to man. The burgers themselves? Yea, they're good. Prepared by hand in front of your eyes. You can almost taste the love they put into making each one... or is that BBQ sauce? Protip, unless your hungry just get the small fries because they'll always overload it with more than it can hold. Half my bag ended up being just fries. There was a longer than usual wait for them to make the burger but maybe they were just giving it extra love...or BBQ sauce. read more

Been looking forward to 5G opening for a while now, finally got to have lunch there today! What can I say, excellent quality, the burgers are prepared however you like them, the fries are thick cut and fresh (I recommend the Cajun if you like a little spice!). I ordered a Little Bacon Cheeseburger (note 'little' = 1 patty, standard = 2 patties) with a side of Cajun Fries and a drink. The burger was fresh, hot and delicious, with all the toppings I requested. They have a huge selection of toppings but I went with the standard; lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, grilled onions, and ketchup. These burgers come out a nice medium in color, slight pinkness to them, not overcooked. (I'm sure if you want them a certain way you can ask). The cajun fries were wonderful, massive serving size, add to that some malt vinegar! The fountain drink was also fun, they use a new coke machine that lets you pick any type of soda you want, the combinations run into the hundreds. We sat outside, the only drawback to this was that they call your number indoors (not on an intercom) so we didn't realize our food was ready but they brought it straight to our table. 5/5, I see a few folks complaining about their patties being "too pink", but in the pictures they look just right. If you're concerned about burgers being too pink I'd suggest you ask before you order, medium is the standard. read more

Love five guys burgers! Good location! It has always been great! Very nice employees that provide good service each time I am there! The menu is so simple but the burgers are so damn good!! I love the seasoning they use! The fries and mikes shakes are GREAT!! They also have low carb options! The lettuce wraps and burger in a bowl are two amazing choices! Free peanuts to snack on while you are waiting for your burger. This location has a nice amount of patio seating on the side and in the front. Each time I have been here the spot is nicely kept and clean. Average wait time for food is about 10 min not bad for a fresh burger made the way you want it!! read more

I remeber Five Guys being one of my favorite if not favorite places for a burger in SD. Admittedly it has been a few years since I had their food. I was super excited as I walked in this past Sunday, but quickly the tide changed. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger and a large fry. First of all I was shocked to find out out that my food cost $20 (no drink), but calmed down because I figured the food would be great. The restaurant was very empty yet the food still took forever to prepare. I opened up my burger and was utterly shocked at how soggy the bun was. Not only was the bun saturated and falling apart, the beef was super dry and the bacon was disappointing at best. I figured maybe the fries would at least save the day. They were terrible!!!!!! Super dry And unseasoned. There were three of us and we couldnt even finish two large fries despite the fact that we went their after doing a 4 mile hike. It wasent a fluke because all of our orders had soggy buns and overcooked beef. I havent been this disappointed in years. Never ever am I going back to this location or probably any Five Guys again. read more

They should get 5 stars just for opening a location in Poway. We are in serious need of more food options around here, but I've got to be honest about the food quality. The burgers themselves are nothing special. They cost a lot, starting at around $6, so it makes you have a certain expectation when it comes to the taste and quality but you might not get it. What you will get though is an enormous portion size, so it sort of makes up for the just okay burger. The way things work here is you pay pretty much a flat price for the burger and you can select as many of the toppings you want to customize your burger. They definitely have some unique options such as grilled mushrooms and peppers. Their fries are AMAZING! That is definitely one thing they got right. Not to mention portion size again is huge. A big plus is the service staff. Management definitely got it right by packing a whole bunch of high energy, friendly employees behind the counter. They make you feel welcome and try to get your order out as soon as they can. They are definitely efficient. read more

This place was seriously packed on a Friday night. First time I have been to this location and didn't know what to expect. Cashiers were friendly and efficient. Cooks were moving it along and all in all a good experience. A little loud but not as ridiculous as some other patrons have mentioned. Maybe they are reading the reviews and notched the volume a bit. Food was good. Very fresh and the fries were surprisingly good. Patty was a tad bit under seasoned for my taste but I'm a self proclaimed salt whore so that's to be expected. I first tried Five Guys Burgers in Philly in 2008, when I'd never heard of them... I had an "eh" experience. I then heard the hype and tried them again in San Jose in 2011, and thought they were "ok." Fast forward to San Diego (Poway) 2013 and a crave for burgers (which I love, but have yet to encounter a great one here). The Poway Five Guys is classic, but there's a small indoor seating area. For 360 days of the year, that might be okay, but we came on a rainy day and the seats were packed and people were vultures for tables. The ordering process is simple: 1) Pick your burger, 2) Pick your toppings, or go "All the way" which gets you every topping listed in black, 3) Order your side, 4) Order a cup for your drink, and pick one of hundreds of fountain drinks from their fancy digital drink dispenser. Optional: Grab a scoop of peanuts as you wait for your food to be prepared. In general, I think their burgers are okay (a little more overcooked than I'd prefer, especially at these prices). A regular BURGER ($5.89) consists of TWO patties (versus the LITTLE BURGER which is ONE patty). A cheeseburger will cost you an extra 70 cents and bacon an extra $1! Do the math - add bacon AND cheese for an extra $1.70. A little steep, IMO. (not so) Little fries $2.49, and a regular drink $2.29. $20+ for a burger lunch for two - honestly I'd rather pay half to go get In-N-Out which has better burgers and fries well done. (Unless you like steak fries, then Five Guys soft mushy ones are probably more your style). A minor quirk - all orders (eat in or to-go) come in a brown bag... which can make busing your table a pain if you've split open the bag to eat the fries.... It'll probably be another 2 years before I try them again... unless I get sick of too much In-N-Out and just need a change of (burger) pace. read more

My son suggested we come to Five Guys since he went with friends and liked it. I wasn't impressed for many reasons. The peanut shells on the floor made the place look trashy although I did like the few peanuts I ate. The burgers were expensive and I ordered a single with everything on it. It was very soggy and really not that tasty. I saw the burger was a bit pink and for me I get worried eating pink burgers from a fast food place. The burger itself was falling apart. I took two bites and gave it to my husband. The fries were good, but cooked in peanut oil? I kept seeing big signs on the wall about how great the burgers were while I looked at my soggy mashed up burger. Nothing was fresh or crispy on the burger and it was way over priced. I agree with others and I'll stick with In N Out. I can't see this place staying in business much longer. read more

First impression is that there is a lot choices , however the little burger is the single patty and the regular is two patties. I got the bacon cheeseburger, fries and drink. It came out to $14.55. Wow! Burger is slightly larger than in-n-out, the fries are fresh with skin on (and the small is bug enough to be medium). My family and I are burger fans. I prefer the mid-west, greasy-spoon, bar type burgers that I grew up eating in a local bowling alley or the corner burger bar not far from our house. The ones cooked on a flat grill with onions slapped together with a bun that was steam toasted on the same grill... Five guys are doing it right. I've not been disappointed here. The team in this location are great and want to see you happy, my kids smile and laugh with the team every time we visit. I'm a fan but would love to see them drop the "Singles" cheese and step it up and offer real aged cheddar, swiss, provolone, or even bleu. That would just elevate the experience some. Heard a lot about this place since it's basically In-N-Out's competitor. Decided to try it out one weekend, but I wasn't too impressed. My burger came out with a semi soggy bun and anyone that knows me knows I absolutely hate soggy buns or soggy bread in general when eating a sandwich. It's disgusting! I forgot what I ordered, but I ordered a burger, some fries, and a milkshake. To be honest I really liked the milkshake, but the burger and fries not so much! The fries are so soggy too! (...yep, you guessed it, I hate soggy fries as well!) Don't think I'll be coming back. The price for the food is not worth it either. Almost $25 for 2 burgers, fries, and a milkshake?
