I've tried the Fremont location and now this location. Between the two, I think the Fremont location is better. I tried both places on two random Sundays. The Curtner location was crazy packed. Lines were out the door! Unfortunately, the SJ crowd is a bit more uncivilized. Line cutting was rampant! Now, if you're meeting friends and are all eating together/paying together, it's cool if your friends who came after join you at the head of the line. HOWEVER, if your buddies arrive who are going to order separately and pay separately, that's just plain cutting in line! That said, when our burgers came out, the meat was a bit dry and not as juicy as the burgers we got at the Fremont location. Also, the Curtner location put way too much Cajun seasoning on their fries. The Fremont location put just enough. I'll probably still return to this location since it's closer, but I hope they improve since they just opened. By the way, some yelpers have stated that the burgers here aren't that big of a deal because it's like any burger they can make at home. Well, no shit! I would just like to say, who ever claimed 5 guys was better than in-n-out was trippin. But to judge the burger, and to put that claim aside, it's a decent burger. Nothing special about it. Yeah you have the option of different toppings and all the toppings you want but I have those options at home too. When I asked the cashier what was the difference between the five guys fries and the cajun fries, she said five guys fries were just regular fries in a way that made it sound very unappealing so cajun fries it is. The cajun fries were WAYYYY over seasoned. But I'm guessing who ever was working the fry station probably just had a heavy hand. Now, to compare 5 guys with in-n-out is silly. Not just because in-n-out is better hands down but because I can easily make a 5 guys version burger at home. I can't make an in-n-out burger which is what makes me want to go back for more. In my eyes and taste buds, In-N-Out is better. There's something about In-N-Out's unique seasoning, sauce, and secret specials that is unbeatable. It has a subculture, if not a cult following because of its consistency and subtle, yet effective presentation. Not hating on the East Coast or anything simply because I'm an In-N-Out fanboy simply because it has never left me dissatisfied. Five Guys may give you more options and perhaps more filling for all you hedonists who can never have enough, but In-N-Out always packs that zing. It's quality over quantity in this case; old money over young money. Fries are zesty, but not crispy as In-N-Out's. Burgers are big, but gets very moist on the bottom of the bun in minutes. Not cool. Am I missing something? I don't get why everyone is comparing Five Guys to In N Out. I think their burgers are completely different in taste and style... I mean..the toppings from either vary differently (except for your common ketchup, mustard, pickles, etc.), but I don't think they qualify under the same category. Anyways. The first time I had it my burger was awesome; adding A1 and hot sauce really gives your burger a different taste. But the second time, Five Guys completely messed up my family's order. I just go in and buy a drink and eat their FREE PEANUTS. Yes, they have free peanuts in the shell in a large box near the entry. Peanuts are good and perhaps a little on the salty side. It's been years since I had good peanuts in the shell. Plus, having it at their location kept the usually mess in their place! For the price of a soda, or if you're cheap - a water cup... the deal can't be beat. If the gal cleaning the tables realizes you're a freeloader and asks, "Is there something I can help you with?" - just explain you're waiting for a friend! Enjoy the peanuts. FYI - they have signs on the peanut boxes and on the front door saying that you're not supposed to take the peanuts outside the restaurant because of "children". Ehh...I've had better. I'm not much of a burger person, so it's hard to find a good burger that WOWs me. The line is too damn long and there aren't enough tables. You have to come here with a strategy. The two times I've come here, we've had someone stand in line and order while the rest of us scout for a table. Okay, not scout. It's more like stalking people for a table. Every bite is just another bite until they're done...We watch their every move until their bums are off the chair... Now with all the Five Guy craze coming to the West Coast. I definitely had to give it a try. When I pulled up, there was a huge line that went passed the door. I got in line with a few of my buddies and theres boxes filled with peanuts that are free? Cool, that's an automatic star. After 15 minutes of waiting, we finally got to the front. I ordered a Cheeseburger with Mayo, Grilled Onions, Lettuce, Pickles, Grilled Mushrooms and Ketchup along with a plain and Cajun fries and a soda. The food came out incredibly fast, way faster than IN N OUT. I noticed that they had a bajillion different flavors of soda too! I mean they had 5 different types of Coke, literally. They had other flavors you normally wouldn't see in a soda dispenser such as Mountain Dew and Root beer. They have a different style here, the buns aren't toasted or steamed. It seems like they come straight out of the bag. The patties were so tender and juicy, almost as if they were hand made. I'm not sure whether they are or not but it was delicious. The fries were good too, I prefer the Cajun over the plain fries. After a meal like this, I usually feel that "nasty" kind of full like you would feel after say eating at Red Robins or Denny's but that wasn't the case here. I was comfortably full, not feeling the need to throw up or run to the bathroom. That was a huge plus! I'm confused whether this is considered fast food or not. It seems like a fast food restaurant except it lacks the drive-thru and cheap prices. After ordering a burger, drink and fries, you'll probably blow around 10 dollars which is not fast food-like pricing. You could take your 10 dollars to an actual restaurant. So what is it? The cheese on mine was not melted, but the patty was delicious and the toppings were good too. I really liked the fries - we tried both regular and cajun. Service was definitely awesome, too.. Okay. I admit. I'm a In-And-Out fan. I grew up in S.Cal and In&Out is an institution. I remember one of the first In&Out joints where you could only drive up and order your Double Doubles. No in restaurant seating. Only drive up. I also remember when I was young enough to eat two of those bad boys and still have a slim stomach to die for. Sigh.......double sigh. So things change in life. Okay, that's a given. But childhood memories of inspirational food experiences shouldn't change....right? Well, no. Things do change, whether you want them to or not. You just have to realize that the only consistent thing is change. Might as well embrace it. So Five Guys is great hamburger joint. Their burgers are stacks of meat and cheese and anything else you might want in a burger. Their fries are better than the In&Out kind...hands down. The combination is killer....a calorie and diet buster that will still have you craving for more. And to top it off, if can also relate to your East Coast brethren about how great a burger Five Guys makes (it a peace offering....get used to it). Now, I still enjoy the In&Out now and then. It's still a great burger, one of the best. And certainly, my childhood memories will still put it near the tops in my list. But, I cannot deny that the East Coast does have something to offer. Wowie, came here earlier today (literally) and I was impressed. Got a cheeseburger which they should call a double cheeseburger, and I was satisfied. Everything tasted fresh. The meat didn't taste like it was frozen, the cajun fries were excellent. They give you a lot too. The produce was great. I mean it was really good. Every time I have introduced friends to Five Guys, they get hooked. I love this place! The line does get long, but you don't wait that long. They're pretty quick. You can also tell that everyone enjoys their job because they're all so friendly and perky. I've never received this kind of service from a burger joint EVER... I like all the toppings you get to put on your burger too. There's a lot! And you always get it HOT and FRESH. YUM! I just wish they had shakes or malts...or sweet potato fries. That would be awesome! I do like the fries they have though-very tasty! But beware for those of you allergic to peanuts because they're cooked in peanut oil. (and they're free) - seasoned fries ("cajun fries") - they have Cherry Coke (i love Cherry Coke) - "regular" burger is double-double (they offer minis also though) - overall juicier (maybe cuz it was wrapped in foil and not left open wrapped in paper -could have just been soggy?) Cons: - no milkshakes!! (what the heck!) - In-N-Out grills their buns (i don't know if Five Guys buns were warmed, but the grilled bun adds great flavor) - overall more expensive (over $20 for 2 "combos") - decor was boring (seemed littered w. advertisements bragging of their awards -In-N-Out has art and big windows) If I had to pick Five Guys vs. In-N-Out in a one on one flavor only contest, In-N-Out would win HANDS DOWN. The overall flavor of the burger is better and the "special sauce" takes it up a notch that Five Guys can't reach. However, if I were to pick a burger joint to go to, 6.5 times out of 10 I would probably pick Five Guys. Why? I love variety. I NEED variety. It's no In 'n Out. For openers, the location pin in Yelp is about 3 miles from the actual restaurant. Made finding it a challenge. Had to call for directions from the tower. Best part of the whole visit was the sunny attitude of the cashier. She was a sparkler. The burgers are all well-done and have the flavor of sauteed cardboard. The toppings were plentiful and fresh. The fries were thick-cut, had the skins on and would have been delicious were it not for having sat in the oil until they got limp and greasy. Five Guys Burgers join is definitely an experience to try out but I would not be a regular here because of a couple reasons. 1. Why three stars?? Maybe the owners and managers should visit the Five Guys in Fremont, and reflect on their own store. Take a page out of the book. Fremont's location is better managed, organized and less stressful to eat. Still i understand the need to try the overly priced location because of its freshness to the shopping area. I have tested The Plant's Five Guys three different times. Twice my burgers fell apart. I sat at the table with beads of sweat on my face, ketchup and mustard on my fingers and a sandwich completely ruined by incompetent cookers. My back was bumped against several times for the over crowded capacity in a tiny store. I enjoy eating my sandwiches in wholes and i enjoy having space to relax. Eating inside the Five Guys felt like i was in a prison cafeteria. Overcrowded with animals. The third time i went, the place was in chaos. After clearing from the smokey order line, i coughed on the sad fact the restaurant is not ventilated enough. I felt so guilty waiting for my order to be made, because each and everyone had great customer service. I frown on the managers they have. I could see in the employee's faces that they needed to be saved. Sad to see someone making my cheese sandwich with sweat filled tears coming off their faces. I understand the demand for soggy over priced burgers but i still could not believe it as i witnessed it. I got the chance to speak to a few and learn the real truth to some lies i see over the counter. So helpful those employees at Five Guys. I feel that if i were to go again, it wouldn't be for the food. It would be for the service and a chance that i might save a soul. LOL So anyways, i noticed that some of the customers at Five Guys are just as sad. Some guy came in who dressed like all he does is lift weights. He dances and sings to the 80s music. There's not a lot to write about this place, it's a burger place, what do you want. Luckily, I write a lot, so DON'T YOU FRET! The first thing you notice is that it's definitely pricier than In-N-Out. The point of reference for everyone compared to this place is In-N-Out (and maybe Steak n Shake), so when I saw the prices, I was like "WTF?" They do have bacon though, but the bacon chee was $6 and change. I ordered the bacon chee with a regular cajun fries. Once I got the food, I felt the price was justified, because the burger was huge, and they give you a LOAD of fries. Like there was literally twice as many fries in the bag as would fit in the cup. Which is fine by me. The burger itself was quite delicious. The beef and toppings were great. The bacon was ok, but it's bacon, so no worries. Fries were excellent, and plentiful. Too much for me, so if you go, split a fries with a friend. It's not clear when ordering, but a burger vs little burger is the number of patties. Little is 1, regular is 2. So...FYI, if you think that may be too much. The staff here is really nice. Very helpful and friendly. There was an odd bathroom incident when I was there, and it was nice to see how they dealt with it. It's too complicated to explain, but they did a fine job. FYI, didn't involve me ;) A quibble: the girl up front asked me to pay in exact change...because she didn't have any. Not her fault of course...but how the hell does a busy place run out of change? She mentioned she was having to cash out $100s. The boss and I rolled into this place at 11:45 and it was packed. My first impression was, they copied In n' Out's color scheme and tiles. If I were an attorney, I might place a call to In n' Out. I am not sure you can trademark a eatery design? Come on 5 dudes, pick a different color scheme and drop the red and white ceramic tiles Basically, they took the In n' Out concept of fresh burgers and supersized it. They use fresh beef and produce, the burgers are almost double the size and calories of In n' Out. The cajun fries are tasty, I would order them again. I ordered the cheese burger and it was very good, but "over the top" for me. For my money or my boss's money, I will stick with In n' Out, the original fast quality burger. I went to this fabulous place today as it was 104 degrees outside in lovely San Jose and I needed an air-conditioned refuge. I read about this place, heard all the rave reviews and decided to put my taste buds to the test. I hate In and Out Burger, so there was no surprise that I found these burgers to be top-notch. There was absolutely no line at all when I showed up, which was lucky since the line suddenly grew out the door as soon as we ordered. The guy who took our order, an older fella with a great attitude (refreshing, I must say) guided us through our "first time" visit. I was surprised to see that the toppings were generous and there were extra toppings like jalepenos that you could add to your burger. The default toppings included mushrooms.. which were awesome. I ordered the cheeseburger, which is double meat and cheese, super FRESH and just juicy and delicious. I scarfed the whole thing down (it was HUGE) and the large order of cajun fries was gigantic and my fiance and I could not finish them all. These fries reminded me of Boardwalk fries with seasoning. My favorite burger joint is Red Robin, but this burger is JUST as good to be honest. It's hard to decide which I love better. I'll just have to show up for another taste test. Can I just add here that I am shocked at the amount of people that say In and Out is better than this. Cardboard fries? Tasteless burgers? I finally went here about a month ago to taste/see what all the hype was about and I must say that I was really disappointed. I've had MUCH BETTER burgers elsewhere. I ordered the the bacon burger with cheese and the works or whatever it's called...I didn't like that the bacon was chopped up into tiny crumbs - they should've called it a bacon bits burger instead. I'm a carnivore...and the beef patty was dry and bland - bleh! The fries...o.m.g. do they give you a lot of fries. No one should be served THAT many fries. It just seems like such a waste. I must say though, I'm glad I did have them because I (sadly) enjoyed the fries more than I did my burger. If you want a good burger and ever make your way down to SoCal, check out Hodad's in San Deigo and try their bacon burger (and onion rings)...now THAT is a bacon burger! My boyfriend digs the burger. But I prefer the hotdog. Either way, it works out to be a casual dining experience with decent food. They've been super efficient and they always get our order right too (sometimes I like to exclude one or two condiments based on what I feel like at that time). We love the fries cause it tastes fresh all the time, although this can be a very "subjective" issue for most people. The fact that they are very generous with their portions though scores it for us! And, you can crack some peanuts while waiting for your meal, that is another plus. However, be prepared for longer waits and crowded tables during weekends! That SAME weekend, I paid a visit. I got the cheeseburger with 'all the way' toppings, which is your basics - lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, sautéed onions, sautéed mushrooms, mayo, ketchup and mustard. Took my first bite and was relieved with instant gratification. MMMMM, now this is what a burger is suppose to taste like! It may not be any fancy gourmet burger but it's definitely undeniably good. The Cajun fries are also another tasty offering from Five Guys - and served in big portions. One regular size is more than enough to share between two people. Gosh I love this place :) Sooo good. If you think Five Guys is on par with In-N-Out then you must be out of your mind! That's not to say that 5 Guys isn't good, but they're just not in the same league as In-N-Out. 1st Impression: Why is there so much signage? I get it, you're loved by newspapers and other media outlets throughout the country. Why are there sacks of potatoes all over the place? I get it, you use fresh potatoes. Now get that shit in back and add some tables so I don't have to rub elbows with the people next to me. 2nd impression: Cost?! These burgers aren't cheap! My bill for a regular hamburger, regular fries and a drink tipped the scales to around $10. Do the math and that's double the price of a combo at In-N-Out. 3rd impression: A solid and tasty burger, but not one to make me crave it all day. I went 'All Out' with my burger and there seemed to be a bit too much mayo and ketchup that it made it kind of runny. Their ingredients blend together well, but not perfect like that of an In-N-Out burger, which produces an unbeatable combination of crispy toasty edges of the bun, caramelized onion and cheese that melts beautifully with the beef. Add in crisp fresh lettuce and tangy zip from the pickle and special sauce and you got yourself a Gold medal winner hands down! Final Impression: I'll give it to them on the cajun fries. Very solid and tasty! Overall. The price is a major turnoff, but the overall tasting experience was good. I'd return If I was craving a burger, but not if I was craving an In-N-Out burger. read more

I don't understand why the hype with this place, "better than in n out", 'best burger", "a lot more for you buck"....blah blah blah! It's ok! The burger is a bit "over filled", too much mushrooms, onions, veggies, and sauces. Ironically, I ordered no mayo and no mustard, and they added extra extra extra ketchup to replace the no mayo and the no mustard. Some may love the overfilled burger, but it made the burger too soggy and also it was very messy to eat, and everything was falling apart. In my opinion, more doesn't always means good, if the burger isn't good I wouldn't eat more anyways. The fries were streak style fries, thicker cut, prefer the shoe string fries. Price is definitely kind of high; two burgers, two fries, one small drinks $20.00! Very expensive for burgers and fries, that isn't all that. The deco and environment feels very incomplete, like more work could of been done. Also, I don't understand the peanut concept; its not really the right environment for peanuts. Not a bar, not a bbq joint, not a hang out cafe, not anything. No TV, no beer, no sports......The peanuts confuse me! read more
