I love the salted caramel shakes. Being lactose intolerant, I have half of one two or three times a year, and that's with caution. I also had a single burger and a handful of fries. Well in general this is the first time I've ever eaten at five guys and a coworker did me a favor that I had to travel to Indiana. He had mentioned about five guys and I had mentioned to him out of all the hamburger places I never tried five guys. He said that they were really good and it was my treat for the favor he did for me and we ended up going to this location and it was my first time. In regards to the burgers taste wise it kind of reminds me of a Rally's or checkers but with fresher ingredients because I ordered fresh bell peppers in regards to the beef meat quality for a hamburger. The fries were surprisingly good one of the fellow staff employee members asked if I wanted cayenne pepper I think his name was Kyren J. My other friend couldn't finish the other price so I took it home and hopefully it's still good as left over to eat what really was weird which I also dressed to one of the staff members was that the banana milkshake that I ordered had a pineapple aftertaste it wasn't spoiled or anything like that but usually if you're just ordering a banana milkshake it shouldn't be that sweet. Almost like the tardiness of a pineapple. I felt like I was drinking a non-alcoholic pina colada. That was my only little disappointment overall it was okay that's what I compare the quality of five guys I would come back to eat a five guys burger but not necessarily the one over here in Indiana. Me and my friend was in merrillville looking for something to eat and we couldn't decide & she's from the south so I had to find her something GOOD. I decided to come to five guys and she was upset about the drive but when we got here, you could smell the burgers and fries, it was beautiful. We walked up, and ordered our food. Not even five minutes later, we had our food in our hands and we were ready to eat. I got a bacon cheeseburger and my friend got a bacon burger, they were both phenomenal, they were probably the best restaurant burgers we've had. Holy sweet Jesus! I have not been here for quite some time. Honestly I just came here tonight because I was craving a burger and Schoops in Schererville was closed for remodeling. It is dead in here tonight, seriously there are tumbleweeds of peanuts swirling around. I am happy to say that I asked if they could salt my fries lightly and they did. I swear if you so not ask you get fries that look like they've been dumped into beach sand. P.S. I forgot how big a large fry was!!! I think they cut up a bag of potatoes. The burger cost more than what I would get at Schoops and smaller too but it's still very tasty. The QUEEN of my visit is the new Coke-Cola machines. I don't drink much pop anymore. I've always enjoyed Five Guys and have been to this location a handful of times over the years - twice recently. While the quality has always been great, they've made the fatal mistake of cutting portions, namely the fries. I ordered a "little fry". They should rename it "minuscule". Honestly, I felt severely taken advantage of. For $4.35 I received a tiny cup of fries and a few extra in the bottom of the bag. This company built their reputation on generosity - especially with their fries. And this isn't the first time I experienced this issue at this location. This is exactly what they did during my previous visit. I hate when companies cut their portions instead of raising their prices. Instead of sticking with the principles of what made them successful, they've now turned the table by being greedy. If they stuck with tradition (a heaping amount of extra fries in the bottom of the bag), I would have been OK with a price hike. Now they're expecting customer loyalty by charging premium prices and delivering small quantities - of POTATOES?! That has to be their smallest unit cost. That's stupidity!! They're undermining the very thing their customers have come to love them for. I will never return to this location. If I experience this problem at another location, I'll be more than happy to go to Portillo's or any of numerous other options. read more

I decided to give Five Guys a 2nd try. I will say at least they are consistent. Consistently bad. The burger was nothing special, with more than the usual grease. The mushrooms looked like they were fresh. Fresh out of the can, that is. And the fries, which they are supposed to be known for were terrible. Greasy. Way way way too much salt. Inedible. Let's talk value. Let's not. A standard burger, what they call a tiny fry, and a small soda. Just under $13 with tax. I visited during the heart of the lunch hour. I was the only patron eating at this location. I should have taken that as a not so subtle hint. Before you spend your hard earned money at Five Guys, I would ask yourself Five Whys. Why should you. Wow, I don't get it. How does this place get good ratings?? The only conclusion I can come to is that there isn't much in this area, except chain restaurants and buffets, so people just don't know good food around here. When there are signs in the windows, quoting people who worship the restaurant, I get worried...They also had a sign that said "Zagat Rated," but the rating wasn't on there. It's a fast-food joynt and that's fine. We just wanted a good burger. They have two choices in size. The regular and the small. The difference between the two? One patty or two patties. They cook them all well-done. Lots of topping options, but the toppings were obviously cooked way sooner than we were served, and you could tell that the "grilled onions" had been sitting in a vat for a while. They were basically just soggy and not hot either. They also put the BBQ sauce on top of the cheese, making it soggy too. They don't even toast the buns, so everything about this burger was just soggy! Here's what really pissed us off: The girl behind the counter said,"Would you like fries with those?" (They don't tell you that fries come with each burger!) So we said yes and viola! We ended up with two HUGE brown bags, filled with fries and a "cup" of fries was in each bag too. WAY TOO MANY fries! Ironically, they were the only thing worth eating. I didn't even finish the burger. It wasn't good. The total price, for two burgers (one regular and one small), two fries, a water, a pop? $21. TOO MUCH.... I'm sad that yet another NW Indiana restaurant doesn't know what it's doing and I have been suckered once again. They'll get over it. The place was packed. My advice for a good burger? Let me start by saying that the burgers at "Five Guys" are solid, good burgers. Are they anything above and beyond special? For me? No. It might be that I have always been and "In 'n' Out" burger gal and anytime I am out on the west coast a visit is usually in the cards. Sorry, but In'n'Out is just the best. Ok, I'm partial. So there. The Five Guys burgers we had literally fell apart (and I was cautious not to overdo the toppings for just that reason). The buns turned into pink lumps of dough halfway through. I made the mistake of going a little overboard with the toppings, which is hard not to do when they have so many and so I had to deal with the sloppy factor but everything was very fresh and very good. The cajun fries are a little spicier than I expected but so good and the regular fries were excellent. I like when places do something simple and do it right. Five Guys is such a place. Burgers, fries, and little else. I was pleasantly surprised to find an outpost of this DC/VA chain in NW Indiana. Fresh ingredients, solid burgers, great toppings like grilled mushrooms and onions, awesome fries, and free roasted peanuts. Burgers are like pizza in that there are countless variations on the theme and everyone has their preferred style (like those West Coasters loyal to In-and-Out), but for my money, this place has the best chain burgers and off-the-chart fries. There's a reason this place tops the Zagat survey for best fast food chain, best burger, and comes in just behind McDonalds for Best Fries. Note: The regular fries are more than enough for two people and the large serves like four people. read more

I love burgers and was ecstatic when this place opened up close by. While I am not a stranger to the place, (I have gone to the Oak Park, Lincoln Park, and Orland locations prior) and it definitely is the exact same as the other ones (not a bad thing). If one is looking for a Schoop's burger, it is definitely way different from them. Again, I guess the trend of using 'fresh' ingredients holds true here as well - meat is never frozen, fresh tomatoes, onions, and lettuce are used as well. While Schoop's have the loose meat sort'a deal which makes the burgers bigger vertically, 5G stacks em pretty high esp once you start adding a lot of toppings they offer. Fries and nice and crispy and have found them to be a hit or miss among friends. They are pretty generous with them though, bc even when they fill up a cup of them, they put in an extra scoop in the bag for you! However, expect to share em if you eat with somebody... 4-star bc it was definitely over-hyped, but to be honest with you it is the best around the area - considering there's white castle's, culvers, mcdonald's around there, that's really not saying much. Burger Crawl 2014. 3 months and 42 pounds later in my lifestyle change, I made the decision that it's time to splurge. I love burgers, as stereotypically American as that sounds, it's true. To find the one true burger joint of Northwest Indiana, you need guts. You need charisma. You need an empty stomach because boy howdy, are you in for a rude awakening. Full disclosure, I've been to all 3 restaurants before, but this is the first time I sat down to all 3 at the same time. For each burger joint I ordered a specialty burger (had to include something special which would cost extra) and Fries. However as close as these places were, I'm certain there was still some quality loss traveling between burger joints. I had an insulated bag on hand to try to keep everything as hot as possible upon taste test. While the load capacity of my stomach is considerably smaller than that of my "not so golden days" I was able to at least try each burger & fries and give my thoughts against each other. And after comparing all 3, 5 Guys Burger and Fries is my leading front-runner thus far. Last on my stop, and at the most expensive of the lot, coming in at $11.11 ( BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger & Cajun Fries) I had actually put in an online order for this location to be picked up at 11:15. I say don't bother with online ordering it's a waste of time and they didn't even start my order when my scheduled pick up time was. 5guyBurgfry is greasy burger goodness through and through, but it's a good greasy. As if you couldn't tell by that grease speckled brown paper bag they hand you. You might remember the distain I had for the burgers at smash-mouth for a similar reason, but these are nothing like that. Once you unwrap that tin foil cover and you see all that cheese which is now infused with the meat and BBQ sauce, you know you're in for a treat. Seems like they're on to something with that tin foil wrap, it's like a secondary oven, which gives it that soft gooey goodness. BBQ sauce is boss and left me licking the plate wanting more, but I couldn't, It was just too much. Burgers are BIG...not like flat out big like Schoop's, but like a ball of meat BIG and unless you're the 3rd moon of Jupiter, it's sure to satisfy most. Be warned, burgers by default are 2 patties, so if you want something smaller you can request the single. Like I stated earlier, I had to drive to these locations so some quality may have been lost along the way. This rings especially true to everyone's French Fries. Those Fries those damn fries. I was in the mood for a change up so I ordered Cajun instead of the regular, and I'll tell you that was one difficult drive home without digging into that bag. The smell is absolutely intoxicating. It literally smelled like ramen noodle soup and potatoes had a baby. Ok, maybe an off-putting analogy, but accurate, and it smelled delicious. Sadly this was the best thing about them. Fries were just above average. The Cajun seasoning was pretty salty. So salty in fact that it was enough to make me feel the need to wash it down with something whenever I grabbed a few. 11 bucks is nothing to sneeze at for a 1 person lunch and that's without a drink, but I believe it was well worth it. Out of all the burgers joints, 5guys was the only one I finished. I only have limited space in my stomach for rent now, so I only accept quality tenants. 5 Guys may not be 5 stars, but it's pretty damn close. read more

This place is great! I've heard good things about Five Guys and finally when I was pregnant, I was dying to see what all the hype was about. The whole experience was pretty cool. When you walk in & order there are peanuts for the taking while you wait. You can watch the cooks cook your burgers while you wait and everyone working there just looked like they were having fun. The place is lined with boxes of potatoes they use for fries and a board has written on it where the latest batch of potatoes they're using were bought. Got the Cheeseburger with everything on it (to die for) and a large order of fries. By the time I was walking out, I thought maybe my baby had developed a late twin! So delicious and filling. Definitely will order the regular size next time. My fiance was full by the time we left, and let me tell you that is hard to do. Great atmosphere, great food, good prices. I enjoy coming here every so often. The burgers are pretty good, but it's very expensive here. I think that the best aspect is that the fries are served in excess, but even so, they're still expensive. My recommendation would either be a cheeseburger with mushrooms and jalapeños, or a bacon cheeseburger. But while their burgers are off the hook, they're fries are too greasy and they taste dry.
