I came to Five Horses South End when it first opened. The outdoor seating in the summer is really nice, I would recommend everyone go there. The service however was only ok. Maybe the rotation was wrong, but I saw our server running back and forth and sometimes forgetting about the outside tables. Beer menu is spot on, nothing bad to say about that. Never found any dirty lines. The food is super hit or miss. I feel like the Davis location has more reliable quality. With the South End location, I never know if I'm going to get something delicious or a salt bomb. The food was delicious and creative. A great hipster-esque atmosphere. However the server we had was really rude. Short skinny dude with a dark beard. The people I was with did not all drink at the same pace and he became frustrated when we would order drinks at different intervals. Finally he abruptly asked if anyone needed anything at all because he "didn't want to keep coming back". What? Seriously? Isn't that the role of a waiter? Tip reflected the service. 3.5 stars. The beer list was a 5. The food had great potential based on the menu, but the execution, taste and delivery was lacking. The cornbread was burnt. The tacos were mediocre, not worth the price. The chicken fingers were the best thing we ordered. I had a pork shoulder sandwich which came on a very large bun and seemed to just have sad bbq sauce and a strange cheese melted on it. I want to first say that I know that it might take a little time to work out some kinks. Drinks...thumbs down, I had a blueberry something that was really, really bad. In a tumbler with no ice and literally one ounce, if that. I had Mac and cheese with pork belly. The Mac and cheese was lukewarm and the pork belly was dry and chewy, thumbs down. Our table ordered tater tots, thinking they would be home made. Wrong. If you like your beer, this is a good place to go. Five Horses has a very good selection of quality beers on tap. Their cocktails are also interesting (note they only stock cordials for now which they use in their mixed drinks). It's generally a good bar/restaurant to go to in the neighborhood with very friendly staff. Food-wise, the menu is hit or miss for me. I like their unique take on comfort foods - almost everything on the menu has an interesting twist but while their dish concepts are great, they don't always translate into a tasty meal. The good: The Brie is a fantastic appetizer that comes with delicious crostinis, topped lightly with a pesto spread and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar (which they seem to love at this restaurant as their extra virgin balsamic vinegar is featured in a lot of their dishes and even in some of their drinks - try the bellinis if you go for brunch). The short rib (spicy) and pulled pork tacos are excellent and you can't go wrong with the Hanger steak. The fried shrimp on arugula appetizer is quite good too. The not so good: Of what I have tried, their mac 'n cheese is bland and so are the tuna and potato tacos. If you go for brunch, I would avoid the corned beef hash because it is extremely chewy (thier eggs benedict looked great though). The longhorn foghorn pizza is dry and not as interesting in taste as it seems on the menu but I hear their cheese pizza is pretty good. My main gripe about Five Horses is that it is so noisy for a place that doesn't play loud music so it's not great for conversation over dinner. However, it's a good local tavern, with decent food (a few excellent dishes) and good to go for some drinks/apps at the bar. There is some visitor parking by the restaurant but would not advise driving there as it is mainly surrounded by resident permit only spots and they do not offer valet services (for now anyway). There is outdoor seating that is pretty nice with heaters to keep you warm during the fall if you choose to sit there which you may want to do if you don't like waiting an hour for a table. I recommend reserving a table for dinner and maybe even brunch because the place is always packed. read more

I've been to this restaurant a couple times in Davis, and I was so excited to try this one in the South End. I ordered the Mussels and Lobstah Pie to share. I order mussels pretty much where ever I go- and these mussels were just okay, WAY too garlicky. I could barely breathe out after eating them. Just too much garlic. And the dish was very small. The Lobstah pie sounded awesome- lobster, pork belly, corn, cheese- but I was disappointed. There really wasn't any flavor at all. I had to order sriracha just to add some kind of flavor. Basically the food was either over or under seasoned. I would go back again to try the tacos... and the beer selection is great. The service was also great- maybe that's because it is brand new? But five different servers asked us how we were doing throughout the meal. Maybe too attentive? They were out of a couple drafts, but there were plenty more to choose from- so that's fine. People love this neighborhood joint, but I haven't been impressed with dinner. Overpriced for execution and feels kind of sparse at night. Better for brunch in terms of both food and vibe. Strikes me as more of a gastropub/casual day drinking type place. They do have an awesome beer selection and I can see coming back for drinks, especially once the weather warms up. I had been to Five Horses Tavern for dinner but decided to try it for brunch this time. The menu had lots of delicious options and I ended up getting Heart Surgeon and Donut Holes for the table. Everything was absolutely delicious. I was a little surprised that they didn't have almond or soy milk, but their coffee tasted fresh so I was okay with having it black. Great addition to the neighborhood in 2013. Solid people and I love plaid shirts so clearly I dig the staff dress code. Food = decent Patio/open air bar = awesome People = great Prices = not so great (there's a glass of cider on the menu for $17?!?) True fans of Mexican cuisine, I've found the best tortillas in Boston! And by "best" I mean "actual, legit flour tortillas!" They have a wide selection of tacos, all with aforementioned delicious tortillas. You can order 1, 2 or 3 at a time, which is much appreciated for light eaters like myself. We went to Five Horses Tavern on Saint Pattys day around 10pm expecting the place to be mobbed. We were able to be seated in about 5 minutes and it was very nice. The bar was packed but the dining room was great. You could hear eachother speak and had breathing room around each table. Very nice. We ordered the Meatza and the Mac and Cheese to share. The Meatza crust was pretty pale and doughy, definitely not cooked long enough, but the combination of meat and cheese was so delicious that I didn't even care about the crust. Or maybe I was so hungry that anything would have been delicious. The Mac and cheese was amazing. It had a nice crunchy layer of cheese on top and I especially liked this because none of the macaroni were affected. They were all nice and al dente and swimming around in their cheese bath. Sooo good. The service was a bit eh because our server disappeared at the end. We wanted to order dessert but it just took so long to wait for anyone to come back that we just asked for the check. After paying the bill we went to the bar for one last drink. It was a typical bar set up. Comfortable. As comfortable as people yelling over your shoulder at the bartender can be. My friend and I really liked it here. Met up on a recent Saturday night and waited 5mins tops for a table. When I walked in, I was glad I got the silent memo and had my plaid flannel shirt on. Cute place, nice beer selection, and happy to see that had a nice wine and cocktail list as well. We split a bunch of stuff, and reviews are mixed: -grilled brie - not even a question. just order it -white bean hummus - not even a question. don't bother. it's not good. -sa-squash - holy crap this was amazing. I want 6 more. -tuna tartare - I don't eat it, but she said it was really good -corn and avocado chowder - I think this needs to be renamed. It was corn chowder, with about 6 teeny tiny slices of avocado dressing the cup. With the other ingredients ilsted, I was expecting a nice kick. Instead it was heavy and rather bland. I work nearby in the South End, and one of my favorite places to go to de-stress after work is Five Horses. The beer list alone is full of unique and fantastic brews- it's long enough for you to try something new every time! Plus the staff is always happy to share their knowledge and tell you their favorites (I think that's my favorite part). I always get the chicken tendies and corn bread- I'm telling you, get the corn bread!!! But I also loooove their variety of tacos. Finally decided to give this place a try. it was strangely packed for 5:30 (so many other places are still dead at that hour). But there was space in the bar area. Waiter was very pleasant. Atmosphere is decent. Lots of young folks at that hour. Not too loud. Unfortunately, the fun stopped at the food. Got one of my faves - the Mac and Cheese. M&C can be a crap shoot - everyone seems to have their own recipe - some restaurants are amazing, and some are dull. I hate to say this one was blah. Dinner arrived in a nice cast iron skillet ("Careful, it's hot"). but strangely, while the skillet was hot, the pasta was not - pretty close to room temperature when it arrived. Almost as if it it went under the broiler for a quick browning rather being an actual baked fo rme mac and cheese dish. By the time I was half way through the meal it was getting cold. The pasta itself was kind of chewy. The pasta on top actually had no sauce at all on it, I had to mix it up myself to get all the pasta cheese coated. After mixing, the taste was kind of bland. No great creamy cheese flavour. No interesting spices. just kind of bland. I had ordered the chicken addition ($3 more). The chicken was cooked well, but again it didn't have much flavor - the chicken itself didn't taste spiced or marinated, and none of the m&c flavor had permeated the chicken. I have to say though - this is the first time I've found a bone in my mac & cheese. I was hungry and finished it, but would definitely never order it again and recommend you stay away. The price ($16 for m&c with chicken) puts it at the high end - and for that kind of money I've had far better m&c elsewhere. (Surprised at all the good m&c reviews here - either I my cook had a really awful day or the other reviewers haven't had really amazing m&c before) The place was nice overall, and i would give them another chance and get something different next time - maybe I did catch a bad night. read more

Big fan of Five Horses after eating here over 10 times in the last few years. Food options are excellent, especially the grass fed burger, the kale salad, and the fried chicken sammy. We love to order the melt-in-your-mouth cornbread as a starter. The beer selection is better than any other restaurant in the South End: huge menu and rotating local beers. The one problem I have with Five Horses is that serve tater tots instead of fries. Though I know others probably aren't, I'm just over the tater tots craze. Some crispy, thin fries with parmesan, garlic, or truffle oil would make this place even better! read more

Happened upon this place while a friend and I were wandering around Boston, and we were so pleasantly surprised to find it! The staff was super friendly and helpful with the menu. We split an order of loaded tots to start, then our DELICIOUS sandwiches came out. My friend got the 90 West and I got the Cyprus Po Boy, which was highly recommended by 2 different servers. It was weird that our server said she always gets it with the tarragon mayo on the side, asked if I wanted to have it that way, and never mentioned the up charge for the condiment, but not a big deal. Listen, I'll be the first to admit that this bar isn't my wheelhouse, on account of being a vodka/scotch type of gal. However, when push comes to shove, the bartenders were/are knowledgeable about their wine list as well. I can't speak to service all the time because I'm also generally a bar gal as well. Bartenders are great; funny, quick if you need them to be, and well-informed. I've had extraordinarily bad service, but hey, everyone is allowed their bad days. Can't beat a $5 pizza during lunch hours, or a pile of tots. Also, if you just happen to be super hungover, the bartender is very sympathetic and will bring you Fernet and a side of mashed potatoes in a bowl. We ordered the donut holes and I guess someone dropped them when they were bringing them upstairs but the manager was super accommodating and took them off our bill and brought us tater tots for free and we got donuts shortly after. Love this place. Great beer selection (and mead!!). The food isn't your typical tavern food which is great. The duck ramen is a little bland, but their mac n' cheese more than makes up for it. Their sandwiches and tacos are great as well. The atmosphere is great, I love the bottlecap mosaics on the wall, and I've definitely schemed over how to abscond with the draft tap chandelier. But, overall it's the service that really makes this place. Matt was hands down the best server I've had at a restaurant in Boston. He was attentive, answered all of our ridiculous questions and had suggestions that were absolutely on point with our tastes. He's a gem, and such a great person to have on staff. Unfortunately, I've also had some bad service here, but I believe that was due to training a new employee, nothing major. Went here for brunch and it's easily one of my new favorite spots! I had been to the one in Davis for drinks and the dinner food looked amazing so I was delighted when this location opened up in my neck of the woods. We had a big group and made a reservation in advance for Sunday brunch. We were seated right away and our waiter (totally forget his name already) was pleasant, personable and provided us with awesome service and recommendations. He came around the perfect amount of times to refill a coffee or grab something we needed without being one of those lingering waiters. Most of us at the table got the Southern Comfort - delicious, but be warned: very heavy meal. The gravy is amazing but again - heavy stuff. We also tried the donut holes (delish). Next time I definitely want to try the Capt'n Crunch french toast or the breakfast sandwich. Everything on the menu honestly sounds phenomenal. And everything is really reasonably priced (minus the iced espresso, which was $5.50 a pop - womp womp). We're already planning on going back for dinner sometime soon. Also must note that the decor and layout of the place are very nice. Bathrooms are clean also, which is a plus :) Street parking on Columbus was pretty easy (even on a Sunday), which was also a bonus. read more

Went to check out this place for lunch after purchasing a Living Social for it. It wasn't very crowded so we were seated right away. For my meal, I decided to go with the beef of burden sandwich with a side of squash (veggie of the day). Boy was this dish tasty. The meat on the sandwich was cooked perfectly and it went well with the egg and pepper and lemon aioli. It was a good size as well as it filled me up. In addition, the squash was cooked in some sort of maple glaze which was rich, but super tasty. Shockingly good food for a pub! I expected all the food to be bar food but they actually had quite a few lighter options. The white bean hummus appetizer was the best thing we ate all night. It was flavorful and fresh. We got it with half bread and half veggies. Delicious. I got the grilled avocado and black bean salad for dinner. It was great - fresh veggies, yummy bacon. The husband got the grass fed burger with tots. Also very delicious. 4.5 stars for food taste alone. I bumped it up to the full five stars because the service was quick, the portions were very generous, and the prices were extremely reasonable. Will definitely be back! Review for beer/bar only: We found this tavern on Yelp while looking for a place for locals beers after dinner with out-of-town visitors. On a Friday night, this place was hopping and had a wait. We decided to just grab beers at the bar and stand. They have a very good craft beer selection on tap as well as bottled and canned imports. The bartender was nice enough to let me try something before ordering. I chose a local cider made with tart cherries--delicious and not too sweet. The staff all seemed very friendly although we didn't sit down for a table. The beer prices were a tad high but nothing over the top. I didn't get a chance to look at the food menu but everything I saw coming out of the kitchen looked tasty. read more

Lot's of cool offering for brunch. IF I had friends from out of town visiting, this would be a place I would sure treat them. Really nice choices for beer and I really rarely partake. It's the kind of menu you'd like to explore over a few visits or sample a few cool things as a group.
