Two friends and I went to eat here today and it was amazing. All the dishes were delicious - we had a Fleur Blanc (roasted cauliflower appetizer with a Romesco sauce) which was delicious and very hearty. The other members of my party had the veggie burger and the Ratatouille pie (vegan pizza) and I had the KFCGH (fried cornish hen with a side of japaleno cheddar mashed potato and mac and cheese with pork belly. It was a perfect portion and everything was delicious. I could taste the potato well in the mashed potatoes and the mac and cheese was delicious. The cornish hen was well-seasoned, well-cooked and juicy. The service was good and our server was attentive. Food came at a good pace. Come for the beer and stay for the food. Five Horses has an extensive beer list. From solid locals to limited west coast beers they have something for everyone. The menu is also quite creative. You really can't go wrong. My favorite items are the tacos. Trust me you can never get just one. The tuna and pork belly were cooked perfectly and they went well with the other ingredients. However, if you do have will power, and just get one, go with the toro. Beware, it is spicy. Additionally, they have a small selection of gluten-free items. It isn't super extensive, but the staff very knowledgeable. Some of the entrees can be made to be gluten-free. The only negative is the size of the place. It's not huge and there limited table space. If you go with a big party you may have to wait a bit. read more

For example "pickled cucumber" and "papas fritas" were both listed as menu items, the former is literally a pickle and the latter the Spanish word for French Fries which is I assume what these were. Went with a big group of friends and had a nice time. Lots of TVs to entertain little ones while the food is coming and there is seating in the back including a huge horse-shoe booth. It was not the best experience in terms of stroller parking, but we made it work. They DID have changing tables and high chairs. Everyone in our party really enjoyed their food. The only reason this place is getting 3 stars is because I saw a mouse run out of a restaurant and into the outdoor seating area and into a woman's purse (which was on the floor). I don't know if this has been taken care of or if this was a one-time incident because we have been there many other times before without every seeing any visitors. Came here for brunch a few weekends ago because it was the only place I could find that actually took online reservations which is a blessing in a crowded city. I was able to get a table for 2 no problem around 11. Our waiter was extremely nice (and cute lol) and helped answer all of my friend's questions about the menu. We split the cornbread skillet, which was so delicious and hot when it came out I forgot to take a picture. I ordered the banana bread French toast, which was a little disappointing since it was literally just banana bread and I assume they cooked it like French toast. It was so sweet and heavy I couldn't really finish it, but hopefully they cycle through their sweet brunch options. I have been to Five Horses multiple times, mostly out of convenience since it was very close to me. The brunch is okay, kinda an odd menu, so check it out before you go in. I've had the chimichanga, which was good but definitely out of the ordinary. The tater tots are out of this world. I would recommend it more for lunch or dinner because the menu is a little more normal without being boring. I have had the burger which was good. It's a good spot if you don't have a reservation because I've never seen it super crowded and they can usually accommodate a larger party. We loved Columbus Cafe when it was in this location and we were sad to see it go. We finally decided to give Five Horses a try and I'm glad we did. I'm a huge fan of attentive waitstaff and that's what you get at Five Horses. The staff was very friendly and very attentive here. In fact we ended up having 5 different servers assisting the 3 of us at any given time. Now on to the Beer. Terrific and diverse beer menu. We were able to sample a variety of different drafts and had some beers that we had never seen before. If you like beer, you'll love Five Horses. The food is exceptional as well. We started with an order of the chicken fingers and the tater tots, both were really good but the 2 stars of the evening were the Mac and Cheese (peas and mushrooms) and the Foghorn Leghorn Pizza. In past years, I have been to the Five Horses Tavern in Somerville and in the South End several times but I never really enjoyed the food; I always went for their amazing beer selection. Recently I was enticed by a Living Social voucher to give the food at Five Horses Tavern another try and I must say I enjoyed my lunch. -1). Appetizer: *K Town Wings ($11 - marinated grilled wings tossed in Korean BBQ sauce.) -Good quantity of wings and very flavorful. -2). Meal: *Beef of Burden with a side of tater tots ($14 short rib, soppressata, manchego, hard boiled egg, roasted red pepper, greens, and lemon tarragon aioli served on a baguette.) -Good portions. The sandwich was very tasty and filling (I almost had trouble finishing it). The tater tots were also very good. I just wish the baguette was more crusty instead of being soft; next time I will ask them toast my bread. -3). Beer: *Lost Nation Rustic Ale (VT, 5.4%, $7.75/glass) -The selection of beer at the Five Horses Tavern is impressive. I have only had Rustic Ale at the Lost Nation brewery in Morrisville, Vermont and I was psyched to see this beer being served here in Boston at the Five Horses Tavern. -I do not like how the price of a good glass of beer is steadily catching up to the price of a glass of wine but such is life... -4). Service: -The bartender was extremely nice and knowledgeable and more than made up for the slowness and lackadaisical nature of our waiter. -5). Miscellaneous: -I love how Five Horses Tavern has one of those temporary, external, plastic entrance-ways leading up to their front door. I was at Five Horses Tavern on an extremely cold and bitter day and there were no cold drafts coming inside the restaurant from the cold outside air. Space is fine, but food is awful. Went with a party of seven and no one had a good meal. For apps, we had loaded tater tots (which were actually the best thing we had all night) and "spicy wings" which were not spicy at all. We even asked to make sure that we'd received the correct wings. Short ribs on taco tasted like they were doused in soy sauce (way too salty) and tough. Cod taco tasty fishy, ie, not fresh. When we commented on this to waiter, he wasn't surprised. My husband asked for no cilantro & there was cilantro on everything. Another friend ordered the fried chicken, which was cooked well, but salty, and it came with two starches: Mac and cheese (fine, but bland) and mashed potatoes (cold, bland). Why no collards or green beans or something else to contrast with the Mac & cheese? I ordered the special, "shrimp & grits", and they weren't grits! It was a gluey polenta. When I told the waiter as much, he told the manager who offered me a free beverage, which was nice, but I was really excited about those imagined grits, which no beer could remedy. Basically, except for the beers which couldn't be altered (happily), everything was bland and not as described. On the plus side, it's cheap for Boston and staff is nice. read more

We had the black bean chimichanga, the Guacamole is really delicious! And we also got their mac and cheese. I'm a pretty picky eater especially because I usually always only have a limited menu to order from, but I've never had such a great tasting mac and cheese before!! Well, I should've received the Thanksgiving Turkey Dinner. Unfortunately Five Horses Tavern cancelled my order (that I place days in advance) AN HOUR after it's scheduled arrival time. It's really sad. I'm alone on Thanksgiving due to Covid, and decide to make it better by ordering my own special meal (with pumpkin pie too!). This seems like the best option since I'm gainfully unemployed (thanks covid) and my oven is broken. Then poof. cancelled without warning (again an hour past delivery time). How can I make food now? All the stores are closed, etc. The person I spoke with on the phone did nothing to remedy the situation and that's after the deliver guy tried contacting them as well. If you live in the the Somerville area I WOULD NOT recommend this place. Highly disappointed. I really hope it didn't happen to anyone else. If they run any other holiday specials (for Christmas, etc) I wouldn't chance it and would try somewhere else. edit: I should add the woman on the phone also mentioned they were sold out of the pie that I PRE ORDERED. What kind of management allows this to happen? I'm lucky that I can just order food from someone else, but It really ruined my plans and cut into the little zoom time I had with my family.
