Glad one of my favorite restaurants reopened so decided to try some items I've never had and also my usual favorites. They renovated the inside but not too much changed inside with the same table set up. They had a spend $55 get free dish so we hopped on that and got the dan dan noodles. The noodles and wontons were decent nothing special. A new favorite and a must get is the steamed pork with garlic which is the wrapped meat. The sauce is absolutely delicious, got this togo as well and was dipping other food in it. Got our usual favorites of cumin lamb and sautéed string beans, these are a classic can't go wrong although when we ordered the lamb togo the portion seemed much less especially for the cost of $22. We tried the fresh fillet in spicy broth which cost $54. It came with some vegetables but the ratio was a little off, there were barely any bean sprouts and they were difficult to get. Wish there was more for the price we were paying for the fish. Overall a great place that will always be a favorite for a family dinner night. read more

Another yummy meal delivered from our now go to place!! Got some of the usuals - hot n sour soup - 2 soups this time because the hubs wanted one too, being cold winter nights and all. Soup was good, hot yummy maybe not as sour as expected but still quite good. The salt and pepper chicken appetizer is sooooo good!! Can't stop eating it. Chicken skewers also very good crispy outside and tender inside. Dumplings that's the hubs favorite. Kung pao chicken and Ma po tofu were good although I found the kung pao chicken a bit too sweet. Five spice house deserves more hype! One of the OG Chinatown restaurants, this place continues to serve up tasty, spicy, high quality comfort food that always hits the spot. We got their Dry Pot Chicken which comes in a little burner with perfectly cooked soft tear apart with your fingers Chicken, lots of big chunks of mushrooms, and additional veg. The fish fillet comes in a soup of spicy chili oil with bean sprouts and is so mouth wateringly good we could not stop eating it! We also added on the smashed cucumber salad which was a super refreshing veg option and a more mild spice than the other two. Five Spices House just reopened recently and was excited to give them a try again. The staff was friendly and was patient to explain to us their new mala dry pot option and helped explain some of their dishes. The place looks much nicer and looks very clean and beautifully decorated. Every dish I ordered were very good, they were definitely serious when using their spices. Everything was perfectly flavored, I especially loved the sweet and sour fish fillet. The fillet was flakey and juciy, the flavor was not overly sweet or overly tangy, and it was perfectly coated on each fillet. Their new Mala Dry Pot was so flavorful as well, with 5 level of spice to choose from. I only choose level 1 and it was still already so flavorful. read more

I'd been to the Central Square location before, but this was my first time at the Chinatown one. The menu has a bunch of options, both more authentic, as well as American Chinese type dishes. I went with the Lamb Cumin Style, which was delicious. My friend enjoyed her General Tso's Chicken. No complaints on the ambiance, the restaurant seemed a bit cleaner than some other spots in the area. However, the service could have been a bit better. There was something in my friend's food and they replaced it, but didn't apologize, let alone comp it. That being said, I won't hold it against them, hoping it was just a one-time incident. read more

I came here on a pretty busy Friday night with two friends and despite the crowd, we were able to get seated on a calmer 2nd floor, which made the experience a bit more comfortable. Starting with a disappointment, the tea left a lot to be desired. We were served a teapot with a single tea bag, which hardly sufficed in both quantity and quality. Not only was it not loose leaf tea that you'd probably expect from a Chinese restaurant, but the flavor was non-existent because again, it's a single tea bag. If I remember correctly, they charged $1 per cup for this fascinating set up. However, the food thankfully took a turn for the better. The Szechuan beef was the star of our meal - truly remarkable and left us wishing we had ordered more. Truly redeemed a lot of the dining experience. The eggplant, szechuan fish, and orange chicken were all very solid picks, but did not shine nearly as hard as the beef. The restaurant was honestly a bit of a rollercoaster of experiences. Given that you're in Chinatown, I think you could find more consistent and reliable options in the area. read more

I've been coming to this place since 2023 specifically for their dry mala pot. In my opinion, it's difficult to find a restaurant that serves a truly good dry mala pot, and this is the best I've had in Boston. The pricing is very reasonable, and the portions are extremely generous; my friend and I often share a bowl and still can't finish it. The service is also excellent. The restaurant has two floors, and I usually prefer to sit upstairs because it's more spacious and comfortable. This location is in Chinatown Boston. The location is in a corner very easy to find, but not that easy for parking. The atmosphere was kinda unusual because the restaurant has two levels and is kinda small. We were directed upstairs and a server greeted us and showed is our table. The food was very good and fresh, we had lo-mein, rice and salt and pepper shrimp. I expected the fried rice to be much better but, it wasn't bad. The other two dishes were really good. Checked out this spot in Chinatown since it was so close to the theater. We made a reservation online but they did it have it but accommodated our party. While the vegetable dumplings were not great (lacked flavor and the texture was weird) the lobster fresh from the tank was DELICIOUS! The fried rice pair perfectly with the tender and well seasoned protein. Previous reviews talked about the lack of service so we entered with that understanding. We weren't offered chopsticks. Apparently if you are not Asian presenting you only get a fork. We were rushed out of the restaurant and that felt unnecessary as we had just paid and were utilizing the restroom before we left. After receiving the bill and paying for my meal, I was returned the slip to sign for the merchant. I chose not to leave a tip, and the lady says, "Tip not included." I proceed to notify her that I wasn't leaving one, and she asks me why. I explained all of the aforementioned items and she slams the receipt BACK on the table, flips it over and asks me to specifically write out every single issue I had with the establishment. For me to be questioned about why I won't leave a tip is absolutely absurd. Then, the icing on the cake, TO WRITE OUT WHY I DIDNT LEAVE A TIP, is crazy. I will never return. I will give an honest review here. We ordered colorful soup dumplings and half pecking duck. The Peking duck is ok, nothing special but I dont think they cooked the duck in the way called "Peking", it's more roasted duck. The soup dumpling has the weird flavor, the green-abalone, the pink- scallop, the black- sea cucumber have the weird flavor, the soup inside the dumplings is sour!!! Which made me questioned why! It's not supposed to have the sour flavor in the soup dumplings! The traditional, crab, and the yellow-truffle dumplings are normal without the sour flavor. So my question is they served me spoiled food tastes sour? The lady served our table is too fast, as soon as we just finished the food, she cleaned the table and gave the bill, like wanted us to leave for the new customer! I think that is their service style, which I don't like, after eating we want to sit a bit just for the food digested, and we will call for the bill when we are ready to leave. Ever since I had Tang Bar in San Fran I was wondering what that specific hotpot style was called and where I could get it in Mass. We ordered the 3x lunch which was 3 entrees and 3 daily house soups for just $33. The waitress was a little rough around the edges which is the reason for the lost of star but the food overshadowed her personality all the way around. The food came in less than 10 minutes, piping hot and filled with flavor! Every single dish was outstanding! The mapo tofu was just the ridge amount of heat and the tofu was like silk, literally took zero efforts to chew, just swallow. The general t'so was our "kid friendly" dish and it was jammed pack with flavor. The chili braised fish melted in your mouth and made to perfection. Came here with a group of 6 for dinner after work one day. No one else was in the restaurant so we were seated quickly - there was only one person working both the front and the tables so things got slow when folks walked in, but otherwise we were the only table eating for a majority of the meal so service wasn't that bad. The food itself was pretty delicious - I loved the bitter melon as it was super unique and yet pretty modern with the salted egg yolk flavor. I loved that and the pork belly as well, the latter being a little salty but the spice itself really made it a nice dish to eat. The dry pot could fit a lot in it - you essentially go up and say what you want added to a pot and then they weigh it to determine the price. They have everything you could possibly think of so it's truly just whatever you want. They're also very vegetarian friendly with their choices! I left feeling very full and satisfied. I got delivery from here one night. I should've taken pics but completely forgot. The delivery was average timed and well-packaged. The food still arrived warm so it was fresh and promptly sent. Dry pot has become one of my favorite foods ever since I tried it for the first time in New York. To my delight, I found this store right by where we were staying in Boston's Chinatown. And it closes on the later side too! At around $24 for three proteins and three vegetables, I would say this is typical of what it would cost when you go to a restaurant to eat it. The profit margin is big but hey, you got to account for that delicious flavor! We got cabbage, mushrooms, tofu skin, beef, gizzard, and fish tofu. Unfortunately they got our order wrong and we didn't get the tofu, but we asked for a refund on DoorDash. although that's my favorite topping when it comes to dry pot, it wasn't so bad because everything else still tasted good. Warning: extremely spicy really does mean extremely! I knew we were going to have issues going to the bathroom the next day upon my first bite. It hurts so good though. We ordered one portion of rice (which comes in a container big enough for two people I'd say) to go along with the food. We also got the hot and sour soup and chow fun. all of the items were good, and the chow fun also helped with washing down the spice.
