We called Kenny of Fivestar Chimney after having wrestled with the problem of one of our two fireplaces being incredibly smokey after each fire. Previously, my wife and I had hired a different inspector who looked at the chimney, ensured it was clear, and gave the go-ahead (which ended up with only more smoke on the next attempt). This time, we hired Kenny to clean the upstairs fireplace and to investigate our [problematic, smokey] downstairs fireplace. We asked him ahead of time to perform a fire test, so he could see firsthand what was going on with the smoke. Kenny was thorough in his investigation and we concluded that one of the chimneys has an internal leak. Kenny is the most honest person I know. When my roof was leaking, he came by to inspect the chimney. Others quoted $$$ to fix the issue including taking down the chimney. Kenny charged me a small amount to caulk the chimney first to see if it fixed the issue. When it didn't and I had made up my mind to take the chimney down, his quote came in way below the others. He did quality work, but that's not it. He left the scaffolding up for the roofers to roof up where the chimney used to be. It meant him having to come at a later time to take the scaffolding down. I recently bought a condo and was concerned about what shape the fireplace was in and didn't want to use it until I knew it was going to be safe. I contacted Kenny for an inspection and possible cleaning, and when he found out he was going to be in my area the next day, he opted to stop by after another appointment. Kenny showed up exactly when he said he would and really took the time to explain my fireplace to me, helping me figure out the quirks of the dampener, and explaining what to look out for in terms of future hazards. He let me know it didn't need cleaning at this time but probably would next year, depending on use level, and gave me tips on how to clean out the ash the people who lived here before left behind. I recently bought a house that had a wood fireplace insert. I had no experience with wood fireplaces and wanted to be sure that it was likely safe to use and what to look out for while using it. Scheduled Kenny to come out and get it cleaned, as I didn't know the history or what to look for. Kenny is just awesome, super nice guy and I have no doubt he gives you his honest opinion. He came out and inspected my fireplace, the liner, and the exterior and got up on the roof to inspect the rain cap and chase cover. He let me know he thought everything looked good and water tight, no major concerns. He told me to keep an eye out on the chase cover for rust, and keep an eye on the brick liner for cracking. He took a preventative measure to add some fresh caulking around the storm cap, and advised that I did not need to have the liner cleaned. He gave me a quote on replacing the chase cover so I could budget for it in the future if the rust got worse. He gave me some tips on starting/maintaining my fire, how large of a fire to build and to purchase a moisture meter to ensure I burn well seasoned wood to prevent the build up of the glazed creosote. He showed me some pictures of different creosote build up to look for and when the build up would be at the point I should have him back out to clean it. Ultimately there are some things that he can't inspect and verify without taking everything apart, and I fully understand that. I will feel more comfortable enjoying a wood fire now. read more

After a couple of attempts of amateur attempts at repairing my chimney leak during heavy wind/rain storms, I've decided that it was time for some professional help to solve this chimney leak. I started searching around on the Yelp and the rest of the internet, and it was quite a long searching process. There are plenty of Chimney repair companies out there; but Five-Star Chimney and Masonry drew my attention. It was the high Yelp Ratings, plus a Facebook page that allowed me to see some of their previous work. First thing I always do as part of my research is checking the LBI, which at the time of my research, the LBI is in perfect order and no incidents were logged. Speaking with Kenny of Five Star Chimney and Masonry - I sent him over some pictures of my Chimney with a yard stick for in the image as a reference. After couple of email exchanges, he sends me over a quote - which I found to be the respectable in this arena, especially for the work I wanted done, which is replacing the entire chimney.
