An update with surgery: We were hoping our little man wouldn't need surgery, but he ended up needing it and [[HIGHLIGHT]]we can't thank the entire Five Star Family for how they took care of him![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] He had a hip procedure and the doctors and surgeons took such good care of him. Surgery was in and out, gave us detailed care instructions for taking him home, and fixed up our boy. He went from unable to walk, walking on 3 legs with a broken hip...to running and playing with his sister again!!! My dog had her second mastectomy- I had to change her vet when I moved to the Valley and am glad I decided to trust Five Star Vet. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Their vet was great and when scheduling didn't workout at 5 star, I was able to schedule her surgery at the sister clinic with the same Vet.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Their follow up was also great.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] A few things that could help reach a 5 star rating: when I picked up my dog post surgery, I had to grab her myself from the crate. I was nervous being that she had fresh stitches. When my follow up appt was scheduled, it didn't coincide with the timeline needed for the stitches to be removed. As a result, I had to do a post op visit twice. Lastly, they should make it a point to let their customers know that there is limited parking (2-3 spots in front) and the rest is street parking. First time here for our new mini golden doodle puppy. She needed her next round of vaccines for parvo. The veterinarian assistant was very knowledgeable of what she needed and provided us with what else she will need in the future. He was not only compasionate but honest as well and loved animals as much as we love our fur babies too. I was a bit skeptical in coming back, but Im the type of person that gives people the benefit of the doubt. I'm glad I did, because not only the staff was amazing. But Dr. Min went above and beyond to make sure my 3 fur babies were taken care of. We take our 3 dogs here for their yearly medical checkups with Dr. Min. Recently our Maltipoo had to have surgery to remove a growth on his eye lid. Also we had them pull out some rotten teeth while he was knocked out. Surgery went very well and we are back after 2 weeks for a follow up. The doctors and staff are very friendly and caring. This office used to be great. The previous Doctor would take care of my 3 dogs and had reasonable pricing. After the change in ownership; i would not recommend this office to anyone. They are all about money. I took my dog's in to be checked for ear infection and they just started adding up different charges; one of them being a strong steroid injection and the next being a sedative. When I questioned them about these two items the doctor's response was if you dont want it then we wont do it. I have a medical background so i am familiar with the meds and the procedures and its just upsetting how they run the office now. You should be able to trust the doctor with your dog but unfortunately i wont be able to do that in this office any more. read more

Both good and bad experiences have come from this Veterinary. For starters, I have been coming here for years to get all of my 4 dogs their vaccines. They have been great and we have never had a problem. Until my puppy was diagnosed with a CKD, Congenital Kindey Diesease. My dog Lily (1 year old) had been showing abnormal signs. She was skinny, would not eat a lot (sometimes she wouldn't eat at all), would throw up, consume a ton of water, vomit every now and then, would be depressed, would constantly get itchy bumps and lumps and always hurt her shoulders. The first time I explained all this to the doctor he gave me medicine for her itch that worked for two weeks and then stopped working. I took her back and after some tests, out of the blue they said "your dog has kidney failure. You have three options: take her to the hospital literally right now, put her to sleep, or take her home and wait for her to pass away." I was completely caught off guard. Nothing was sugar coated; everything was so subtle. The only thing I could do was ask "are there any other options?" and break down to tears in my car. The vet, Dr. Alexander Stern spoke to me over the phone. He said "I really think you should consider putting her to sleep. Trying to treat her illness is like a shot in the dark. It could cost you $5-10k dollars. She needs her kidneys flushed and even that cannot cure her." The nurse told me to go home and "process" everything and come back when I was ready. She took my payment and told me "we close tomorrow at 2pm, just to let you know." I thought.. they want me to put her to sleep tomorrow??? After hours of crying my eyes out, I did my research. I kept looking for positive things. I asked a friend's vet for a quick consultation based on the blood work. She recommended to go to a different vet, get an ultrasound, urinalysis, and blood work again. I went to a different vet (Thrive) and without giving them any explanation, they said they needed to do all the tests my friend's vet recommended. I approved and two days later they called me and told me to rush Lily to the ER to get an ultrasound. I went to Access Specialty Hospital where there is actually a Nephrologist (I did a ton of research). I actually already had Lily scheduled with him in late December (that was the earliest available). Ultimately, they said Lily's kidneys are abnormal but not life threatening. She will end up living a shorter lifespan but with treatment she can be with me a little longer. She has been taking special medication, prescription food, getting blood work, taking supplements, and over the past month, her blood work has improved so much and she has actually gained a little over a pound which is amazing. She eats normal and now she is super energetic and looks very happy. She has not hurt her shoulders since and she is no longer depressed. From the expenses with Five Star to the new Vet to the hospital ER visit along with her routine blood work and everything has cost me around $1,600 compared to $5-10k that Dr Alexander Stern had said. I am sooooo glad I did not take Five Star Vet's suggestion of putting her to sleep. I still wonder why they jumped so quickly into "put her to sleep" mode instead of offering me multiple alternatives. I am assuming they mainly treat people with low income and they automatically assumed I would not be interested in other alternatives or treatment because of the price? Or maybe he is not a good "long term" veterinarian. I don't know, they were very good with everything else with my other dogs. I am not rating this a "1" because of how they have been good to me in other situations. However, with Lily, I felt they didn't put effort and were like "either she is rushed to the hospital NOW or you put her down NOW." Of course, they gave me time to think about it but still. It was a stressful and hard situation. I will probably still come here for yearly vaccines but Lily has her own treatment plan elsewhere. I thank them for seeing all the signs and for the proper diagnosis for Lily. They were able to find the problem, they just didn't handle it the way I would have preferred. My cat was attacked by another cat which resulted in a wound on her ear. A couple days later I realized it was infected and needed treatment. It's now New Year's Eve during a pandemic and I'm trying to find a vet that's open that's willing to see my cat. I was worried I'd have to wait until after the holiday for her to be seen. Five Star vet took her in last minute and saved the day for me. Their covid protocol is to stay in your car, they come outside and get your pet, the vet calls you and then they bring your pet back out to you. The staff was very friendly and very efficient. I arrived and they came out to my car within 5-10 minutes. Dr. Stern called me to discuss treatment options and actually took the time to really talk to me. There was no rushing me off the phone. Luckily my cat only needs some antibiotics. I'm just so thankful. I would have understood if they didn't see me today. I'm a new patient, on a short day due to the holiday, during a pandemic. But they took me cat. Also, their prices are very very reasonable. In the end, my bill was only $68. Anywhere else would have charged $100 easily. I've been to a few vets around the valley and this place is easily the best. I have two dogs and a cat so I'll definitely be back. read more

I've been coming to Five Star since 2005. I drive from Burbank because the care and fairness I receive here makes it worth driving past 100 other vets. Dr Stern was amazing. I pray he's enjoying well deserved retirement. Jasmin (who has been there a while and is AMAZING), Dr Erin and the new team are continuing this great tradition. We recently had our 1 yr old German Shepherd spayed. While they prepared to perform this they pointed out a hernia that we knew existed since she was a pup. There was also a small growth on her shoulder. We discussed it and decided it would be prudent to perform the other procedures since she would be under sedation. Everything went perfect. Dr Erin texted me as soon as the biopsy came back clean with a congratulatory message . Truly appreciated! As pet lovers we always want a trusted provider. My best friend recommended this place. Very friendly staff. Both doctors took very good care of my husky for a dental procedure. They were very honest up front regarding exams and estimates for costs. After the procedure I received texts messages with my dogs condition and his status. I was able to pick him up after they monitored him and he was fully awake and alert which I appreciated. He had a dental procedure when he was adopted at another clinic not related to this one and as soon as he was done I was asked to pick him up which he was still droopy from the anesthesia. just now NEW Worst possible place to bring your pet . They really tested my patience here !!! I had to vaccinate all my puppies and they refused to vaccinate them. I've talked to the the receptionist originally weeks ago, to have both vaccines and deworming completed . They didn't have me for a dewormer scheduled in with my appointment . Now they want to charge me for an exam. Receptionists are rude and need to really need to get their priorities straight!!! Etsyia and another technician that I didn't get her name. DR minn if you truly care about your clients have the decency to come out or at least have your staff accommodate. I struggled to transport my pets inside when I first came in and finally after arguing with them they offered to take my dogs back in the car, Which I declined .. My other vet helps me get my babies inside the facility and back outside. Common courtesy which they don't have have at the five star vet location. After hearing great things about Dr. Stern and Five Star Vet, I decided to check them out. So glad I did! I couldn't be happier with how well my cat's visit to Dr. Stern went. We arrived about 15 minutes before the office opened for a walk in visit. There were a few people ahead of us but the wait was not that long. The staff is very friendly and did a great job of getting everyone checked in and settled. Dr. Stern is very, very kind and gentle. His demeanor is calming and you can tell he's extremely knowledgeable and caring for his patients. Five Star Veterinary Center is such a GREAT discovery! We're from Sylmar and didn't know about this vet 'til our friend told us about the cats she adopted who got treated by Dr. Stern. Our Frenchie has been having little sores between his toes and we have been bringing him back and forth to another clinic but I wasn't satisfied with the care he's received (because they just kept giving him antibiotics which never worked, among other issues). On our first visit (12/18/17), Dr. Stern easily figured out what was the cause and gave him anti-allergy medicine. He immediately informed me that it wasn't an infection and that I needed to stop giving our dog the expensive antibiotics his previous doctor prescribed him. The anti-allergy medicine IMMEDIATELY resolved Buster's paw problems and from then on, we knew Dr. Stern is perfect for Buster. He also saw that Buster has Keratitis which was left unnoticed by Buster's previous vet! Thank god for Dr. Stern! He is very patient, very honest, and you could tell that he ADORES animals. Not only that, he's a GREAT doctor. Also, the staff are amazing. Veronica, Yoli, and Heidi are super accommodating and are just so warm towards all of us who come in for an appointment. Suitable for routine vaccinations etc. They don't do much more than that. No surgeries of any kind. I don't think the doctor even comes in any more, the lead technician just handles everything now. Like most veterinarians they don't do well on anything complex that requires diagnostic skills. Exception is orthopedics as the doctor is a specialist, but they are no longer doing any of that work either. The young lady at the front desk is polite enough but they really don't care much about customer service or satisfaction. Oh the only good thing is they are not part of the VCA system and that means their prices are much lower. read more

Please read the whole thing, I wanna add to what RG said because I just saw the review and I knew she was gonna make one and it's totally not the whole story, I was there and what actually happened on that day. First let me say that the technician told me and my partner ahead of time like they told RG that the vet was under surgery and wasn't gonna be out to see patients and that it could take a couple of minutes. Yes part of RG story is true but not the whole story was told. RG told them that her puppies had diarrhea, in which they asked RG how long have the puppies had diarrhea and RG said 2 weeks because she changed there food. In which the technicians said that, that's not natural because usually it takes dogs couple days to get better because of the food change and not weeks. They also said that they didn't want to vaccinate them because they didn't want to put the puppies at risk since they have diarrhea and they don't know what could it be, it could be a lot of things an infection or something in that nature which can put the puppies at risk. In which she demanded to talk to the Veterinarian, in which I previously stated that she was doing surgery and unavailable. She was yelling and demanding to speak to her in which they (the technician)repeated calmly and professionally that they couldn't because she was doing surgery. I get that people are worried about there animals because I sure ass hell was too, but come on someone's kid/brother/best friend was under surgery and of course the vet is not gonna stop the surgery. I sure ass hell, would be mad if I heard that my vet that I'm trusting the life of my dog stopped surgery to attend someone who can't wait. She was also super rude to the technician yelling at them, and as soon as the technician gave her the same energy she didn't like that. I also want to add that, I have brought my dog of 3 years here since she was a puppy everyone knows my baby girl, before the new vet came in and Dr Stern retired, we haven't had any complaints. The vet is very nice and caring and does take her time with pet parents like you would expect. I have nothing but good to say about this place and recommend it. I also called the same day of this situation and told them my concerns and they were able to squeeze me in, in which I was so thankful. I would always recommend this place.
