WAKA FLACO FLAME This trendy taco spot is where all the cool Loyola kids go, evidently. I was advised by nursing student Maddie B that Flaco's had some worthwhile tacos and she was right. We happened to go on a $1 taco Tuesday which was good timing on our part. It was bustling with hungry college kids on a weeknight during finals, and it seemed to be fairly popular among the local residents. We walked in and ordered a quartet of tacos, along with some flavored margaritas and chips & guac. The latter came first as I could tell that the chips were freshly fried and the homemade guacamole was solid. My cherry and her strawberry margaritas were poorly mixed; a big pool of grenadine syrup sat on top and made for a few very saccharine sips. The daily taco was braised pork shoulder with potatoes and a green sauce. For a buck, it was a good value. My 'al pastor' taco ($3) wasn't half bad, and my companion indicated that the chicken taco was decent. The crowd was predominantly college kids (I felt so old!) and Edgewater hipsters. Bread = 3.5 Circuses = 3.5 I'd give Flaco's Tacos another shot, but it wasn't anything life-changing like Torchy's down in Austin TX. read more

I came here because I was feeling like having tacos and I just happened to drive by. I didn't realize it was a Loyola University hotspot until the cashier told me "that's what the Loyola kids usually get" in reference to the menu. He was polite and kind in helping me pick what I wanted since it was my first time there. I decided to try one street corn chicken taco and one al pastor. I made it a combo with the rice and refried beans and took it to-go. Overall, I really enjoyed the food and it was packed very well. I was surprised that I liked the street corn chicken more than the al pastor. I would suggest trying the street corn chicken tacos if you're going for the first time. The service was great, the cashier was friendly and my food was prepared fast. However the food was way below my expectations. I've eaten at this location at least twice before and I've eaten at the one on Dearborn numerous time. I have to say I prefer the one on Dearborn . The food at this location doesn't have much flavor in my opinion. I had the barbacoa burrito and my husband had the the chicken tamale, pork tamale with rice and beans. All of it taste bland. I also ordered guacamole but I did not receive it. I should have checked my bag before I left. I didn't get a margarita this time but I have in the pass and they are pretty good. read more

Steak and al Pastor tacos, perfectly made. You love tacos! The tacos are on the small side, the better to have more than one. They started out a little bland, but after a squirt o' green sauce, bam. Tasty good. I had al Pastor, which could have used a bit more flavor. However, I see myself coming back here, as these are the exact type of tacos I like. Small and meant to have several different varieties at once. Not a lot of ingredients on them - meat, lettuce and cheese. There are vegan options for those among us who are that. The margaritas are GREAT. Icy, salty, tangy, fresh. The $3 Monday margarita was smaller, I think, than the regular margarita, but damn - just order another one! Cute outdoor area right under the Granville Red. So urban, I really loved the vibe here, right out of the box. There's something so great about sitting underneath the L stop and watching the trains run over above - or maybe that's just me. I love how there's a courtyard between the two halves of this restaurant, fantastic outdoor ambiance. Honestly, if Susupuato doesn't step up their game, and soon, this is the new taco place on Granville. Now that Nacho Mama's is closed for the season. I will be back, again and again. so about and hour ago, I called, I asked if the street corn tacos were made with chicken breast? I was told they are. After getting all the way back home, Matteson, Illinois, I discovered the tacos are made with THIGH meat. I am calling the manager and expect a refund for tacos that I can't take bake until Monday. I hate that they lied, I surely could have paid for what I wanted. Everyone doesn't eat dark (chicken) meat. I don't that's why I made the call to begin with. So being a vegetarian, places will automatically score lower with me if they do not have any tofu or meat substitute options. Just veggies in a burrito is simply not going to cut it for me, and that's where Flaco Tacos started from, and went down hill from there. I got my burrito and it wasn't even wrapped well. It had absolutely no flavor what so ever. The only flavor it had was when I added my own guacamole to it. Then, as I'm eating my burrito there are massive chunks of onion, whole chunks of onion, and I don't even like a lot of onion to begin with, it was absolutely disgusting. The only reason I am even remotely giving this place 2 stars is because I had a speciality black bean and squash taco and it was good, not amazing but good. Unfortunately not the best experience. The drinks were great and decently priced, but the food was pretty bad. The $10 chips and guac tasted pretty stale and old, and the tacos came out lukewarm. I was also pretty confused by the service system, as some of us were given numbers to put at our table and others weren't, which led to employees just kinda wandering around calling out names and looking for us on both sides of the restaurant. The restaurant itself is super cute, and in a really nice spot, I just wish the food had been up to par. It was a pretty busy Friday night, so maybe we caught them on a bad day. Considering how busy this place gets, the staff does a good job of running the ship. I arrived during a festival, and the bathroom was spotless, the tables were clean, the wait to order was tolerable, and the food was good. Kudos to the crew! That said, I saw that the kitchen was pulling chicken hot off the stove, so I ordered it, along with guacamole and grilled tilapia fish tacos. All in all, it was affordable, tasty, fast, and filling. I almost had guacamole left over, and that's unheard of - especially with home-style tortilla chips and salt at the table to go with both the red and green salsa they offer. They also have cups for water on tap if you're not into beer or soda pop. Maybe I'm spoiled after having spent 13 years in Southern California surrounded by some of the best Mexican food on the planet. In fact, I know I am. That said, this place is decent/good - but not great. Visited for the second time today. I had myself the al pastor burrito and my girl had the steak bowl. Both were good. But when you know how beautiful Mexican food can be when expertly executed, it's hard to really, really get excited about the offerings here. We found ourselves in Edge Water and starving. Before we caught a train we stopped in which is conveniently located under the L tracks across the street from the entrance. My boyfriend got a burrito and I chose a bowl and we were both happy with our picks. It looks like they have a nice patio set up for warmer days but it might be hard to have a conversation since it's directly under the tracks. Went on Mexican independence day, and was super happy with this place! Reasonable prices for the amount of food you get, and the restaurant itself is really cute. If you have the chance, sit outside- the train goes right above the restaurant! Between friends and I, we tried the tofu, chicken, and shrimp tacos, which were all great. If you are ever craving some tacos but want something a little more authentic than fast food, this is a perfect middle of the road. Will be back soon. read more

First, she was tearing up my friends IDs because she thought they were fake, and then said we were stupid for trying to get a drink. One of our friends was in there after we left and heard all the things she was saying about us. She said we were stupid for blowing kisses to eachother, that we were mean girls in highschool and b**ches, and that we were stupid, and making fun of our IDs. Ordered a mango margarita, chicken pozole and the chicken taco of the week. The cashier was very friendly and helpful in choosing what to order. There was a sign saying the margarita was top 10 in Chicago, so I had pretty high expectations. It comes out of a slushee machine and then some syrup is put into it. The mango margarita tasted like Lysol Lemon cleaning product... but if you drank it with the salt on the rims it was easier to swallow. Someone else said the strawberry one was really good though, so maybe it was just this flavor. Chicken pozole wasn't very good either. It was just chicken broth with hominy and chicken. I thought the tacos were pretty good though. Not sure what their regular tacos are like, but their pollo asado special taco was really good. I would come here again, but maybe just stick to the tacos or try a burrito. read more

Paid for a gallon of the margarita which they do not give with sides of the flavoring but instead mix it the whole thing. Would rather be able to change the flavor like how they had it before than have one gallon of a one flavored margarita. Which brings me to the fact that I actually didn't get a gallon but half a gallon which i measure out cuz i was a bit confused since it didn't look like a gallon to me. It pains me to give Flaco's a low rating - the Chicago red line location is outstanding. However, the Granville misses the mark primarily because of service. The servers/cashiers are nice, but not very attentive. Tonight, I ordered two chicken tacos (the $1 option) but was charged for the full price. This place is AMAZZZZZING. They give you complimentary chips and salsa. And the salsa is so unique compared to any taco place I've been. Very spicy and tasty. They use green tomatoes, onions and avocado. The tacos are just perfect, not soggy, fresh, and service is great. I also love that they open late on weekends. I am a big fan of this place! I moved here recently and Flaco's is a few blocks from my house, and needless to say, I have been about 10 times in just one month. The overall atmosphere of the restaurant is super cool. It is located under the red line, so every so often the train comes speeding overhead. While it's a bit loud, I think it offers a super cool city vibe that never lets you forget that you are smack in the heart of Chicago. The employees are all super cool and attentive and the ice cream shop right next door definitely doesn't hurt the value of this place. As for the food, I have tried a huge variety. The tacos are delicious, I've had the vegan and fish tacos and was very happy with the flavor of both. The vegan one was made up of a bean mixture but was still super satisfying even without meat. The guac is delicious and comes in a big portion, but could use a little more lime in my opinion. The tamales were outstanding and I am always a sucker for a quick eats Mexican restaurant that serves tamales. The real distinguishing part of Falco's though is their margaritas. They have a wonderful, magical Slurpee like machine that dishes out endless servings of slushee margaritas, which are my favorite kind. They have awesome deals on drinks every day, like a margarita Monday, a sangrita Saturday, and more. The people here are nice, but sometimes love just ain't enough. This place is right under the El, and sometimes the noise from the train is so loud, you have to wait to order so they can actually hear you. I got a steak burrito and the flavor was a bit weird. Day after 4th of July and this was the only place open, ordered at 745 when they closed at 8. A rude blond lady working in the back came to our table to tell us "we will kick you out at 8. We didn't even get our food and we felt rushed, not invited, and threatened. I ordered a 10 meal deal and my fiends ordered a 50 meal deal and but they got the same one container half beans and half rice in one small container. This is the universe where "Pete's Pizza" (just down the block) is a Mexican place. What do I mean by that? You'll see. Flaco's is in a super-cool (in my opinion, anyway) space. I like the glass walls and (for real) the proximity to the Red Line tracks. It's an urban atmosphere you couldn't get just anywhere. I was recently lured out of my nest with an enticing Flaco's coupon. I'd been avoiding the place because of the mediocre reviews. I thought the place was really well run. Nice people, too. The food and service were both a disappointing experience. The tortillas were dry, hard and old as if they had been sitting out all day. The horchata here is the worst I've ever had with a strange aftertaste and I was served a cup that was only partially filled and lukewarm. The fish in the fish tacos lacked any flavor or spices. One of my regular lunch spots during the pandemic work-from-home, this place is perfect for inexpensive, tasty carry-out.

I was in the area last night and I saw the sign with the creative name and decided to give it a try. I ordered the picadillo burrito to go. I don't live far away so I was able to get home quickly. The burrito wasn't wrapped properly and was falling apart. I quickly noticed that the burritos made here are not put on the grill after they are folded. Doing this would not only make them easier to hold but the shell would be crispy instead of soggy. The ingredients were off too. The lettuce was salad lettuce and the cheese wasn't right. Mexican people love their food and culture. They will often eat Mexican food when they go out. I didn't see a single Mexican patron in this place which should've clued me in. And yes there are plenty that live in Edgewater. All I saw were students and they don't exactly set the bar when it comes to good food. Very disappointing. read more

First, I want to note that the counter staff I encountered were simply fantastic, cheerful and helpful. Great staff. But the food was overpriced for the quality. Particularly, I thought the corn tortillas that came with my tacos were horrible. Horrible. Stale, tasteless, uninspired and a waste of calories. After eating one with my Cowboy Taco, I just couldn't take another bite of my other taco's corn tortilla. I did eat the insides of it, and they were tasty enough, though nothing to brag about.
