Almost a year ago exactly my friend gave me a button with Tina Fey on it. "Where did you get…read morethis?!" I exclaimed. "I made it," she replied I gawked at it and envied her for having access to a button maker. A year later, Portland Button Works has appeared and granted my wish to make my own Tina Fey buttons. Oh, what fun! There's much more to this place than the name might lead you to believe. While buttons are there to be bought, ordered, or even made by you on a whim in person at the store, they also carry a wide selection of zines. I've only been there one time and I'm already feeling very inspired to read more zines. Finally a place in Portland with awesome zines that I can get to without crossing a bridge or those pesky streetcar tracks. The fifth quadrant of this city has been waiting for a place like this to open for a while now. If you're not fortunate enough to live nearby, then have no fear as it's just a block or so off the Killingsworth Max stop. Besides having a really nice selection of zines and buttons, the store itself feels very welcoming and cozy. There are benches to sit on inside that seem to be created from recycled materials, and I believe most of the shelving has been made from pallets. In the center of the store sits an island with a few button makers on it, beckoning for you to make your own. In addition to the awesome space, the folks who run the store are really welcoming and eager to answer questions or chat about zines. I am very excited for this new addition to the neighborhood and the future buttons to be made!

I love Portland Button Works's Design-o-Matic app. It's incredible that you get to play with…read moretypefaces and colors and how the top and bottom text curve. Prices that go down with steps in volume make shopping there super thrifty. It's reassuring how they keep you apprised of your order's progress as it goes through their system. You get an immediate acknowledgment, and notifications when the buttons go into production and get shipped. I asked if I could get the buttons by a date two weeks out, and they came in more like two days. I got a handwritten note from the proprietor and a bonus grab bag of RESIST buttons with my order.

I was soooo excited to make it to the flagship store in Portland this weekend! I have purchased PLG…read morefrom the website, the app, on Poshmark and from facebook. So this was the dream to be able to go into the store and feel the leather, see the vibrant colors and have a real shopping experience. It was a great experience through and through. The staff was friendly but not overbearing. The associates let me browse and enjoy the shopping experience. When I needed assistance, they were available. One even took a picture of me trying out a bag because I wanted to see how it looked in proportion to my size. Another grabbed more bags in a color I liked for me to check out. It was a great experience and I walked out with a new large Rowan bag in Black and some bag charms. I can't wait to go back. I love the styles they offer and the shopping experience was amazing.

I placed my second order with Portland Leather just one week after my first purchase. During…read morecheckout, I entered the WELCOME30 code I had used before, but it didn't apply and my order processed at full price. I understand that WELCOME30 is a one-time-use code. That's not the issue. At the time, Portland Leather was running another promotion, SUNNY25, which would have given me 25% off. In their response, they acknowledged that if I had entered that code, I would have received the discount. I contacted customer service immediately after placing the order to either cancel it or have the current promotion applied. Unfortunately, there is no option to cancel an order and no customer service phone number to call, so email is the only way to reach them. Their response was that they could not make any retroactive adjustments. Instead, they offered me 600 reward points toward a future purchase. Considering they admitted I would have qualified for the 25% discount, this felt like a very inadequate resolution. Portland Leather seems to have a sale running almost constantly, which makes it feel like the sale price is their actual everyday price. I like their products, but the lack of flexibility and poor customer service left me very disappointed.
