This shawarma spot behind at the back of the Hasty Market by Yonge & Davisville. A friend of mine who lives near by recommended to me. So, on the way to work one afternoon I decided to drop by. Ordering food was pretty simple just go to the back and ordered what you would like they prepare it and then you take it to the front of the store and pay. I am by no mean an expert on shawarma but at the flaming stove when I got there they were making their sag bread and I was fortunate enough to get my shawarma with a fresh saj bread. I got the chicken shawarma with the pickled vegetables, tomato, and lettuce. I had a good laugh with some of the people behind me because I couldn't decide which sauce so I just chose the garlic and amba sauce. The portion honestly were huge and really was bang for your buck. I was fortunate enough I guess to have a pretty good wrap where it was evenly spread out so from the part I bit into the end I had a bit of everything. The staff were super helpful and I can see people being confused if you never been there before. You line up, order, and take your food to the Hasty Market front counter to pay. FOOD (3/5) My preference for eating shawarma is on fries, however they primarily offer their shawarma and other meats wrapped in homemade saj bread. Fries were another $3.50 which I opted out of. It's rolled on a huge piece of saj with all sorts of toppings like lettuce, tomato, radish, onion, garlic sauce, and tahini. Then it's lightly grilled in a panini press. Flavours were good but not amazing in my opinion. The way it was assembled was also uneven and resulted in meat not evenly distributed and some bited just purely saj. VALUE (4/5) They give HUGE portions of food, and half the wrap was enough for a lunch meal. I do wish there was a bit more meat wrapped in but good value nonetheless. SERVICE (3.5/5) It can be a bit confusing to order especially if there's no clear line. Staff is generally really helpful explaining the ingredients and toppings. This place is hidden in the back of a Hasty Market. It's busy and the service is friendly enough but super quick so you better know what you want when you get up there. I tried to order a beef kafta saj wrap, which was 1/4 options they had. I was told it wasn't available so I switched to chicken shwarma. You can then customize your toppings/sauces. I went no parsnip (turnip?) and no amba sauce. I regret not getting the latter but even without it, this was still a very tasty meal. Also a big meal since I only ate 1/2 the wrap. Plus, the Hasty Market is stocked with a whole bunch of snacks and drinks you can't find easily elsewhere. I had a Cherry Vanilla Coke with my wrap. From now on, whenever I hear the term "hidden gem" I'll be thinking about Flaming Stove. I have never heard about this place before and probably would never have found it if it wasn't for a friend visiting from Vancouver. She did her research! This place is hidden in the back of a convenience store and known mostly by locals. Many of them passed through while we were eating at one of three tables. Judging from the conversations we overheard, quite a few customers were also coming here for their first time. On the tail end of a food crawl, my friend and I decided to share a saj (traditional Middle-Eastern flatbread), filled with chicken shawarma and all the fixings. First of all, the saj was huge, probably close to two feet in diameter! We watched as it was being assembled and loaded with all kinds of fillings - lettuce, tomatoes, onions, turnips, sauces, and then shaved rotisserie chicken. Wow! It was then rolled and toasted whole before being cut in half. It tasted amazing! All the ingredients played well together to create a delicious sandwich. Every bite was flavourful. We loved it! This used to be the best shawarma place in Toronto, but it's been very inconsistent in the past 6 months. Some days it's great, but other days it'll be pretty dry and lacking in toppings and sauce. They also don't respect your topping customizations when you order delivery. read more

This was a bit of a hard one to rate. I ordered from here because the place had gotten such awesome reviews. The size of the shawarma wrap was HUGE - it came in two separately wrapped packages and honestly that was the size of two shawarmas. It was good, there's no doubt about that. However, I hadn't been expected the kind of curry sauce or strong curry flavour that came with it. I like my good old-fashioned Montreal-days shawarma wraps and so for me, having curry flavour in there is all a big No-no. Can I see how others might enjoy this? Absolutely. I ordered the shawarma with everything in it including all the sauces, i was excited because it was very big in size and I was really hungry haha and also read a lot of great reviews about this place. There were lots of sauce choices but I went with tahini and garlic sauce, with a tiny bit of mango curry sauce. I ate it right away outside of the hasty market, but the shawarma and the rice were all cold. I had to pack it up and take it home to reheat it. That was disappointing. After heating up the food, other than the soggy veggies everything else taste pretty good. The garlic sauce is definitely on point and there are so much meat. However I think it gets a little plain, I jus think there could be more flavors as the other shawarma plates I have eaten elsewhere. With so many glowing reviews, I had high hopes. I was doing errands along Yonge Street so decided to check our Flaming Stove for lunch. As mentioned, it's in the back of a convenience store. I have to give it to the staff; service was excellent. They were very welcoming and quite efficient as well. It was Friday so the line was long with take out orders. I ordered the chicken shawarma with fennel salad along with some tahini and garlic sauces. For a generous portion, it was $8.99 (before tax). The price is right as you can make two meals out of it. I found the meat and vegetables missing something. It could have been more flavourful. Mind you, it was edible. What I got: Shawarma Saj ($10) Pros: - I was at the Taste of Middle East event at Yonge and Dundas when I decided to check this place out since it had the longest lines. It was definitely a popular item - For $10, it was one of the more worth it items (in terms of cost and quantity) I've bought at a street market, and I've been going to various ones for 5+ years. - instead of using a pita, they use a "saj" which is this large wrap that is chewier, denser, and thinner. I prefer this wrap more as it doesn't get soggy as easily and is more flavourful. - I also liked the use of mango curry, hot sauce, and tahini sauce instead of the standard garlic sauce. The curry flavour was definitely present and is better than the strong garlic taste found in most shawarmas. Cons: - Though this store front looks very unassuming and probably doesn't have very many lines, at the event I was at, there was a 1-2 hr line. You also needed to pay first to get a ticket. It has to be the largest laffa in the city. Unfortunately, the chicken was not spectacular - not fatty, but lacking in flavour. Although it's quite tasty, the laffa wrap actually overpowered the sandwich, as toppings are a bit minimal. Overall, it's very fresh at the Flaming Stove, and a unique food experience due to the odd location. If they improve the chicken seasoning and double the amount of toppings, it's an easy 5/5! I ordered a chicken shawarma wrap with everything on it and all of the sauces. OMG it was delicious. Usually the last few bites of these types of sandwiches aren't worth eating because the bread really isn't that good. The saj in fantastic and the last few bites with their sauce was the best part of the wrap. I'm going to start buying their saj to eat with hummus rather than pita. There isn't parking here so I parked in the lot meant for the apartment in front of the Hasty Market. They made my food fast so I would park there again without hesitation. Firstly they do not skimp on portions, the wrap is generously filled and is also pretty big in size (you get 2 of the ones shown in the photo, 1 big wrap cut in to half). This is well worth it for 10 something including tax. I love that they use markook bread, this is not easy to come by at many middle eastern establishments in toronto so I was happy to see this. Ingredients are fresh and flavourful. Comparatively I find that in Toronto no one really knows how to make a good shawarma this place most definitely does (mostly due to stale ingredients, and off putting flavours in sauces). Highly recommend their hot sauce, it is amazing. When a friend who works in the area told me that she gets her shawarma lunch daily from this place at the back of the Hasty Market, I was skeptical. But OH MY GOODNESS GUYS, don't sleep on Flaming Stove! Their shawarma wraps ($8.99) are huge, and they know this, because they cut the wrap in half and wrap them separately. When you see them make your wrap you'll think, wow, I can't believe they're going to fit this whole thing into one wrap. They make their saj bread (kinda like a flatbread -- thin and stretchy) fresh in house. The meat is juicy. They have a variety of tasty toppings, which vary according to the wrap you get (when I ordered a delicious falafel wrap, it came with roasted eggplant and red peppers-- COME ON). You can pick your sauces, and I usually go with tahini, amba sauce (spicy mango pickle) and garlic sauce. They've also got an assortment of reasonably priced salads (hearty ones, like chickpea) as well as other daily dishes like curries and Middle Eastern sweets. You can buy the saj bread, hummus, etc on its own if you want to make your own feast at home. By far the BEST value for delicious takeout in the Midtown area. Between two people, you could totally share a wrap and a salad and end up paying under $15 total. As mentioned, this place is in the back of a Hasty Market so the only drawback is there isn't much in terms of seating (although there are a couple tables). Whether you take it to go or not, just pay at the front of the store and you're on your way. Amazing portions of guilt free good food that is cheap! I don't understand it but I'm not complaining. $9 per person for a falafel saj wrap or shawarma chicken saj wrap which is generally two meals. My dining companion claimed this is the beat falafel in Toronto. I don't recommend eating both halves in one sitting cause you will be we full. It's loaded with veggies which won't make you feel bloated but still, my friend who tried eating the whole thing felt bad for a few hours. Their hot sauce is worth investing in too. It's flavourful heat. I don't like hot sauce that's just pure heat. I like when it's got some acidity to it from vinegar or limes, a bit of saltiness and just a tad of sweetness.
