    Chicken shawarma wrap (half shown)
    Brandyn T.

This shawarma spot is tucked at the back of the Hasty Market by Davisville. I've heard some high praise for this spot so came by for lunch a few times. You line up, order, and take your food to the Hasty Market front counter to pay. FOOD (3/5) My preference for eating shawarma is on fries, however they primarily offer their shawarma and other meats wrapped in homemade saj bread. Fries were another $3.50 which I opted out of. It's rolled on a huge piece of saj with all sorts of toppings like lettuce, tomato, radish, onion, garlic sauce, and tahini. Then it's lightly grilled in a panini press. Flavours were good but not amazing in my opinion. The way it was assembled was also uneven and resulted in meat not evenly distributed and some bited just purely saj. VALUE (4/5) They give HUGE portions of food, and half the wrap was enough for a lunch meal. I do wish there was a bit more meat wrapped in but good value nonetheless. SERVICE (3.5/5) It can be a bit confusing to order especially if there's no clear line. Staff is generally really helpful explaining the ingredients and toppings. OVERALL (2/5) I know some people say this is the best shawarma in the city but for me it didn't meet that expectation at all, and fell short of satisfying my shawarma craving. Underwhelming imo, but you get huge portions. There's also some novelty in ordering at the back of a convenience store.

From now on, whenever I hear the term "hidden gem" I'll be thinking about Flaming Stove. I have never heard about this place before and probably would never have found it if it wasn't for a friend visiting from Vancouver. She did her research! This place is hidden in the back of a convenience store and known mostly by locals. Many of them passed through while we were eating at one of three tables. Judging from the conversations we overheard, quite a few customers were also coming here for their first time. On the tail end of a food crawl, my friend and I decided to share a saj (traditional Middle-Eastern flatbread), filled with chicken shawarma and all the fixings. First of all, the saj was huge, probably close to two feet in diameter! We watched as it was being assembled and loaded with all kinds of fillings - lettuce, tomatoes, onions, turnips, sauces, and then shaved rotisserie chicken. Wow! It was then rolled and toasted whole before being cut in half. It tasted amazing! All the ingredients played well together to create a delicious sandwich. Every bite was flavourful. We loved it! They offer a variety of specials during the week, including Thai, Jamaican, Indian, and Cajun dishes. I'm sure we'll be back!

This was a bit of a hard one to rate. I ordered from here because the place had gotten such awesome reviews. The size of the shawarma wrap was HUGE - it came in two separately wrapped packages and honestly that was the size of two shawarmas. It was good, there's no doubt about that. However, I hadn't been expected the kind of curry sauce or strong curry flavour that came with it. I like my good old-fashioned Montreal-days shawarma wraps and so for me, having curry flavour in there is all a big No-no. Can I see how others might enjoy this? Absolutely. It was packed with ingredients and seemed like quality. Did I like it? I mean... not really, though admittedly it's because it wasn't what I was looking for in a shawarma wrap. So I guess if you're me, you'd rate it three stars but if you were someone else who enjoyed curry flavour with your shawarma, you'd likely be giving this a 4 or a 5 star review.

    Seasoned Grilled Supreme Chicken Meal

I had the Seasoned Supreme Chicken Meal $18.74 plus tax on Ubereats. It was skin-on gilled chicken with seasoned rice and grilled vegetables (zucchini, sweet potatoes, Tomatos). The rice and grilled vegetables were super tasty. The chicken was ok but slightly on the dry side for me. Overall, it was good I would prob come back if I'm in the area.

I had the shawarma and let me start by saying the Saj is very good, I really loved the consistency of it. I ordered the shawarma with everything in it including all the sauces, i was excited because it was very big in size and I was really hungry haha and also read a lot of great reviews about this place. When I finally tasted it, I really liked it but not fell in love with it... I felt a lack of flavor, wasn't able to taste the meat that much, it gets lost with all the other flavors. It's a very good shawarma but not the best I ever had.

Went in a windy day after a friend's recommendation "a hidden gem inside of the hasty market", maybe it's pandemic they have reduced the container from a square container to a smaller round container, not sure if actually was smaller portion tho since it was packed with food. There were lots of sauce choices but I went with tahini and garlic sauce, with a tiny bit of mango curry sauce. I ate it right away outside of the hasty market, but the shawarma and the rice were all cold. I had to pack it up and take it home to reheat it. That was disappointing. After heating up the food, other than the soggy veggies everything else taste pretty good. The garlic sauce is definitely on point and there are so much meat. However I think it gets a little plain, I jus think there could be more flavors as the other shawarma plates I have eaten elsewhere. In general it was filling and satisfying, but I don't think I would go back.

Decided to try after so many recommendations. Chicken shawarma wrap was very fresh and flavourful, and tasted very authentic, as they bake there own saj (wrap) in house and ingredients are fresh and elevated with a variety of spices. A bit pricey (just over $10 after tax), but the portion is quite large (maybe a meal and a half) and nice to try out. Expect a bit of a line around lunchtime.

Okay, this place definitely deserves 5 stars! I've tried both the Chicken Shawarma Platter and the Shawarma and both of them were amazing! The portions are huge here and definitely worth the money. They have many dishes to choose from which is also a huge plus. Staff here are pretty friendly. The place itself can look a bit more neater/cleaner, however it's in a grocery store so I guess you can't have best of both worlds! Definitely recommend this place!

With so many glowing reviews, I had high hopes. I was doing errands along Yonge Street so decided to check our Flaming Stove for lunch. As mentioned, it's in the back of a convenience store. I have to give it to the staff; service was excellent. They were very welcoming and quite efficient as well. It was Friday so the line was long with take out orders. I ordered the chicken shawarma with fennel salad along with some tahini and garlic sauces. For a generous portion, it was $8.99 (before tax). The price is right as you can make two meals out of it. I found the meat and vegetables missing something. It could have been more flavourful. Mind you, it was edible. I opted not to get the hot sauce, but if I visit again, I will see if adding hot sauce to the meat will add flavour. There's a seating area/patio in the back so you can eat in. Good for: lunch, cheap eat, shawarma

    Chicken Shwarma Salad

Friends have told me about this for years. I never wanted to believe that amazing shawarma was in the back of a convenience store. Well, I was surprised, to say the least. This was, in fact, the best shawarma I've had. Something about the flavor is incredible. The portion was big and the service was fast and the people were kind. No tabouleh for the chicken salad, but it was still good for me. I'll be coming back for sure!

Well-lit, slightly modern looking decor, comfy atmosphere that's pretty casual. Lots of different people helped us out, took our order, brought food etc. but it felt like the service while good, was just slightly below great. We got the veggie clay pot and the mixed grill to share between two people, and my son got a fattoush salad and the kebbeh. The mixed grill was great, all the meats were flavourful, and tender/juicy. It came with a lamb/beef kebab, some beef tenderloin, and some chicken. I think there were roast potatoes too, but my memory is a bit fuzzy on that part. The veggie stew was poured onto a plate of bulgur and was really really good. Lots of flavour, all the veggies (carrots, cauliflower, onions, etc.) were tender. the juices ran through the bulgur which made for a great side dish to go with the meat. The kebbeh was tasty but still a bit disappointing -- there were only three, and didn't feel like quite enough to make a meal. Luckily the fattoush salad was huge otherwise my son would have left the restaurant hungry. Compared to some of the dishes we saw on other tables, this dish seems to be an outlier in terms of quantity of food, and it's certainly not worth the $28 price; I wouldn't recommend it. Despite the disappointment with the one meal, all the food was delicious and I still felt like the meal on the whole was good value, and I wouldn't mind going back to try some of their other dishes.

We seated at a bench (for the ladies) and at what passed for garden wooden chairs which were obviously home made. They required a minimum spending of $35/person with a time limit of 1.5 hours. Appetizers are traditional middle eastern fare but very small. They were just a bit off taste.Somebody was either trying something or just did not know. Labneh, babaganoush and a tomato/pepper mush all 3rd rate and again very tiny. A sharing order of fattoush was brought to the table. It was more in the order of a small side salad. The ordered main course all had chicken. No matter what was ordered from Molocheya, Shawarma Plate, Chicken with eggplant the chicken was the very same off of whatever grill they use. There were a bunch of tendons in the "de-boned" chicken. The Molocheya was a special punishment. Clumps of leaves sodden tasteless, drowned in a wrong tasting lemon broth. There was not a hint of spice blend or texture that makes this dish unique. To add insult to injury, a table of 4 was served 2 small pita bread to consume 4 appetizers. In addition the labneh came with a small square of a flavoured biscuit that was crumbly. An order of falafel was freshly fried but from its very colour we could tell that there were not herbs in the mix. The inside was not only insipid but was thoroughly of a light tan colour. But they were not through with us yet! A syrian coffee was ordered brought to the table. After letting the grind settle I had the pleasure of drinking from a broken leaky cup. I looked forward to eating in a real Syrian restaurant because Syrian Aleppo food has the reputation as being the best in the Middle East. These guys obviously did not get the memo. For a dinner for we spent about $190.00 which is ludicrous for this type of food. ANY street side shawarma joint on Lawrence would be far far better. Save your taste buds and your money.

I've heard many good things about Zezafoun and was excited to finally try the place. The restaurant has about ~25 seats for customers indoors. They do have a small outdoor patio for when the weather gets warmer. Reservations are recommended during busy peak dinner or brunch times, however it is possible to get a table if you do walk in as well during non-peak times. I dined at Zezafoun with a party of 3 recently on a Sat evening. We didn't make reservations but walked in around 6:30 and was able to grab a table. It wasn't too busy that early in the evening but as the night went on the restaurant got busier. Service was great and friendly. Staff gave us plenty of time to decide what to order as well as gave us recommendations as well. The interior is warm and cozy. For drinks, I ordered the pomegranate juice which was unique and delicious. One member of my party ordered the rosewater and lemon juice which was refreshing and light. They also have Syrian coffee and tea as well on the menu which I will try next time! Food wise, we ordered and shared the following dishes: - Falafel plate (chickpeas patty fried and served with a side of tahini sauce) - Hummus (homemade chickpeas, tahini, lemon and garlic with a touch of olive oil) - Fattoush salad (Lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, radish with Zezafoun dressing topped with crispy pita bread) - Kebbeh labanyeh (beef kibbeh in a cooked garlic yogurt stew served with side rice) - Maldoum (beef kufta wrapped with delicious eggplants in tomato stew and served with a side of rice) - Makloubeh (layers of rice, eggplants, and ground beef with tomato sauce served with side yogurt or salad) Food was delicious and unique! I've never had authentic Syrian food like this before and it was a delight. The appetizers we shared (falafel, hummus, and salad) were great to start the meal. The hummus was creamy and the falafel was nice and crispy. The crispy pita bread in the fattoush salad gave the dish a textural contrast, In terms of our mains, all the dishes were tasty but I especially enjoyed the makloubeh! Overall, delicious spot in Midtown Toronto for Syrian food in a cozy environment. Service was also spot on as well. Definitely want to return to try their brunch menu!

The pancakes were very fluffy and delicious. It was a great portion for a man like him. I'd say this place is worth a try if you're in the area because it offers great value for the price.
