My husband ordered us 2 beers at the bar and the bartender hardly acknowledged him, didn't say hello or look at him, and then when he was giving us back the change, he threw the money at us even though my husbands hand was held out to take it. Then to top it off both of our 2 different beers were warm, not cold at all, and mine was flat. This place is a shit hole with disgustingly rude service. This place was an oasis. After a long day of walking around, my group of friends just wanted to find a place to sit and watch the Cowboys/Eagles playoff game. And this was the perfect place. Flannery's was a great dive bar: a big TV in the back, a few booths (ours felt very private and even had its own small TV), pitchers of beer, lots of dart boards, and a pretty good crowd. The bartenders were friendly too. When I asked them to switch the station on "our TV" from some college basketball game to the NFL, they did it without attitude or a pause. Flannery's is not the last word on pubs in the city. It's doesn't deviate much from similar establishments; TVs, $5-7 drafts from a pretty unspectacular list, weathered wood, loud tunes. It's a darts bar despite its relatively narrow width, which can make navigation front to back somewhat of a negotiation when it's crowded (which it usually is) and may result in a contemptuous glare from a player if you're not careful. It's also a Tottenham pub, which you can rejoice in if you're unfortunate enough to be a Spurs fan. Hopefully that's not the case. HOWEVER. There is one factor that cannot be ignored, which is the simple fact that Flannery's provides undoubtedly one of the finest pours of Guinness in the City of New York. More specifically, Mike (aka Mush) provides that pour, which is truly a thing of beauty. Performed with incredible care, it is a process that requires patience, chestnut waves seductively lacing their way towards the bottom of the glass as the beer settles. Direct quote: "I always say, like the best sex, it takes time." The pint is finished off with a lusciously creamy head with the remarkable impression of a shamrock, a feat that frankly shames the legion of half trained third-wave baristas strewn across the city. Our run club, TMIRCE, has been coming here on Thursdays after the 7 pm run workout. It was my first visit here and I went straight to the bar to claim my free drink. I don't drink beer and asked the owner if he can make me a straight up margarita. He said it was a mix and asked if I wanted something else, "do you want it or not?" I responded, "I'll get wine, white wine, not dry, " to which he responded, "this is a fucking Irish bar, it's not a fancy joint where you can ask for so much, do you want the fucking drink or not?" The Spurs supporters bar for NYC (so I have lost the Arsenal lot, a sizable chuck of the Chelsea lot, definitely the Hammers lot and maybe some "hard core" Fulham fans....ha ha, who am I kidding...there ain't no Fulham fans in NYC). So, it's a little rough around the edges. There might be no natural light inside. The ceiling might still be dripping from the last pint I had there after the mighty (yes, mighty!) COYS went on to win another game, but this is my home away from home (away from actual home). Mush, our fearless, literally, leader and owner rallies the troops over the weekend. Bangs his curling stick on top of the bar to start another mighty COYS song that echoes through out the bar and rolls into the streets of New York. Guinness is poured and spilt. Shots are a plenty and the regulars are full of stories and open arms (to fellow Spurs fans of course). It's a unique place. But it's our place. Would I change it? Would I bollocks. They have a really racist bartender. I was there Wednesday night. We were acting totally normal. The bartender gave us a bad look whenever we sat at the bar. He didnt ask us what we want to drink for 20 minutes. I called him and asked for drinks, he said we are intoxicated and he can not serve us. I said we are ok, he said "you and your people can not drink at my bar". I realized that we were the only Middle Eastern looking people there when he said that. We got mad and explained him that we were normal and just wanted to have some drinks. He told us to "f*** off". When we said the same thing to him, he just came out of the bar and said" do you wanna take it outside?". We didnt want to deal with this nonsense and left the bar. Ok, so I've been here about an hour. In all honesty, it's a hot day, I wanted a cool place to have a drink before I continued my walk. However, the music is good, the people, and there are a decent handful of them, are cool. Doing their thing, being an awesome local bar, etc. But now I've been here an hour. I was meeting my fiancé here to have drinks but the moment I walked in, the bartender very rudely called attention to me and asked what I was doing there. I think I found my new lazy Sunday afternoon hangout. After participating in a brownie crawl around Chelsea with my roomie and two friends, the next logical step was alcohol. (Well, at least in our sugar-loaded minds, this was the next logical step.) It was cold and windy and we wanted to get inside quickly. Once we got to the corner of 14th and 7th, we looked to the right, saw Flannery's, and said, "This will do!" Our decision to come here was soon greatly rewarded by Henry (I believe his name was), the most awesome Irish bartender EVER. He was talkative and friendly, discussing music, NCAA basketball, and various other topics with us. At one point, he even gave us 5 dollars and told us to pick out some good Irish music from the jukebox! My friend Jennifer was up to the task, picked some great Irish tunes as well as some David Bowie, some Pixies, some Beach Boys, some Flogging Molly...and did the bartender start to do a bit of a jig behind the bar? Oh, you bet your sweet bippy he did! We took amusement in the NCAA touraments on the various TVs around the bar area and watched men with mullets and wine throw darts quite expertly. Jennifer partook in their offer of free hot dogs, which, after a brownie crawl, may not have been wise. However, after she declared it to be "The Filet Mignon of Hot Dogs", I think it WAS a wise decision for her to have consumed it. This place is just a little gem. And they have bottles of Magner's! I've been here a few times with different groups of people and we have fun no matter what. I've only gone on Fri and Sat nights, usually around 10-11 and stayed for a bit before moving on. No cover at the door, decent priced drinks ($6 for a gin and ginger, my go to drink) and I've never had an issue with the bartenders being rude or ignoring me. Pretty good service actually. They also have not checked our IDs any of the times we went. I had it out the first time and they just waved us in, so I don't bother taking it out anymore. I hope its not because I look that old -__- Anyway the DJ plays really good stuff. A lot of the classics and old school mixed with some alternative, country, and newer stuff. He does take requests and is really laid back. There is a lot of room in the back to dance and move around. Plenty of tables and chairs. Very relaxed environment. Just a little hectic if they are playing darts though. I got stabbed with one trying to walk by. Not cool. But usually when they see it start to get really crowded, they shut down the darts and open up more space. You can also watch whatever game is on for the night on the TVs they have. Honestly, my friends and I come here to watch the white chics dance. It's hilarious. No offense to anyone! It just is though. Watching them break it down (or try) to dancehall is live entertainment. But its all good at least they're having fun. We went out on the floor to show how it was done a few times, but I don't come here to dance. Though that's a good thing I suppose if the DJ is playing better stuff than in the clubs/lounges. Haha. Oh and the bathrooms aren't as gross as you would expect. Friendly bartenders are really the only reason to come to this Irish pub. It's unfortunate location on 14th Street and 7th Avenue is less than ideal, unless you ride the 1,9 trains. The bar is quite large, which is good for crowd control...it never feels too cramped. The people who come here fall into two groups: after-work-drinks people, and locals (mostly men who have nothing to do at 7pm). This bar is my new favorite bar. The bartender Michael (don't quote me on that not sure if that is his name) is awesome. He actually does buybacks. Seriously? Hardly any places in Manhattan do this. This place is huge and very roomy. It's great for the weekend and for the middle of the week. The bartender actually remembers you just by meeting you once. He's a real cool guy from Ireland. If your coming here for a night of food I suggest you go else well they do not serve food. What I like is that the bartender is always ready to shell out some free shots. Atmosphere is very chill and no yuppies or hipsters. You can come down for a game of darts and listen to some awesome tunes. IF you feel like dancing you can dance the night away because there is a DJ on the weekends. There is a computer here for use for $1.00 I've yet to see someone use it. What I like is that there are booths in the back area so if you with a big group its a little private. The drinks are always strong you can really get in some trouble here. :::::::BATHROOM ALERT::::: Let this be our little secret, this place has a bathroom downstairs. While that is not good for sloppy drunks falling down is possible. The womens bathroom is shockingly clean. The soap is always full and the toilet paper is stocked. There is a huge mirror next to the stalls so it does not interfere with you washing your hands. Don't you get annoyed when you want to clean your hands and some bimbo is putting on makeup? Well that issue is not possible here. There are 3 stalls which is cool. But the secret is that before you go downstairs to go to the bathroom if you go to your left adjacent to the stairs there is a single unisex bathroom that is very roomy and clean. Of course there is a urinal for men in it and a toilet for the women. Seriously, I recommend using that bathroom because there are no stairs or falling involved. It really is a Fantastic bar to watch some sports too because they have a lot of TV's. I believe they have dart tournaments I am not sure on which days. I am not sure how to feel about this bar, but it gets three stars based on my experience. I went there to watch the KU vs. Villanova game and toss back a few beers with my buddy. The plus side is that there are a good working TV's throughout the place, Smithwicks on tap, and a dart board. The negative side was the place was cranking douchey music so loud I couldn't understand the drunk college girl attempting to awkwardly flirt with me. Sure she was three sheets to the wind and if slipped between the sheets she'd be passing wind in less than three...but I wanted to hear her try! Damn you Sweet Caroline (bum bum bum). The Chelsea Bar Tour continues for me as I made my second stop at Flannery's I really like how nice energetic this Irish bartender is and made sure the customer feels like home.
