Have you ever had such great customer service somewhere and you just want to tell everyone? Well, this is what happened to me and my daughter today at The Original Flap Jack Shack! I couldn't read her name tag and didn't have the opportunity to ask, but the manager working today about 1pm was outstanding! Whatever they are paying her I am sure isn't enough for the circles I saw her running today. Going above and beyond and working in some capacity many positions in just in the 45 minutes we were there. So our experience was a little bit tainted. We waited in line for a table for about 20 minutes. weekends are very busy. Overall they were understaffed a d overbooked. I had one of the skillets (the one with bacon and tomatoes) and it was hot and fresh and delicious. Others at the table had cold food or things that were undercooked. It took us almost 2 hours to complete our dining experience, which was not by choice. The cook did come out and apologize, and credit our bill. Overall I dont think the food is worth the hassel of getting it in front of you... also drinks took about 25 min to even reach our table. Bummer because it was pretty good food read more

Came here with a group of ten on a Sunday, so we figured it would be busy but we were willing to wait- worth it. Not a very big waiting area but you make do and enjoy the coffee that's free while you wait- nice perk. We were seated fairly fast given our group size and got terrific, patient service while we all made up our minds- coffee by the carafe is another coffee bonus. Wanted to try something other than pancakes because that's what I usually get- also the pancakes seem heavily leaning toward dessert. Went for the Albuquerque omelette- it's terrific-- and if I get another opportunity I'm pretty sure I'll make that a repeat choice--- and I'm not an omelette guy. The batter and/or the cooking approach have changed; the pancakes have lost their familiar, comfort-food taste, and look undercooked - which they aren't, as can be seen when cutting into them. The food was not very good overall. Quality varied per each in our party. The service was very poor. We went to the shack because we knew we could get some drinks with a Saturday "brunch". Upon entry, we were told we could not be seated outside- odd on a nice day. It was warm and sunny outside- maybe too hot for them? As we sat, it started to get pretty warm inside anyway. No shortage of servers or employees in general- like a server per table. In fact, our table of four experienced 3 different servers. Only one of which seemed to actually care how we were doing. We sat near noisy kids. Bloody Mary's were too salty, small, with an odd heavy application of lemon pepper on the rim. This place is confused! Progressive decor scattered around a generally cheesy interior, breakfast and lunch menu that looks creative but is no better than Ram's Horn, adult beverages available in a typical family style setting - all out of whack. They seemed more like mashed potatoes with cornmeal in them. The pancakes tasted a bit of corn meal as well, heavy. The ham is Canadian bacon, round and small, avoid that. Eggs and bacon were good. Super expensive breakfast. For the money, you are way better off going to Big Boy next door. I use Yelp to find restaurants that don't suck. Flap Jack Shack doesn't suck, but there is definite room for improvement in their service. Granted it was a spring weekend, and a rainy Saturday to boot, so the place was busy. We were told it would be 20-25 minutes to be seated and they were pretty true to their word, and we were greeted by our waitress pretty quickly. It was after we placed our order that the real wait began. It was at least more than 30 minutes until our food came, during which time the waitress stopped by once to refill drinks. She didn't offer any apologies or explanations for the wait, but we overheard other waitresses saying they were short staffed in the kitchen. When we finally got our food it was delivered by a different person, and once we rearranged the food that had been on the wrong plate she asked if we needed anything else. At that time, we didn't realize that there was no syrup on the table. Our waitress never came back to our table to check on us. We had finished eating when she delivered drinks to a table near us and still didn't come to our table. We had to flag her down to request the check. We normally tip 20% but our waitress did not earn that much this time. She will probably blame it on the kitchen, but the truth is, she didn't do anything to make our wait better and dropped the ball on too many things. read more

Since being re-done, I have been pleasantly surprised with the food. It was delicious, with decent portion sizes. However, the restaurant had maybe 4 Tables in it while we were there and the Hostess insisted on seating us all in a giant clump. Love the Flap Jack Shack! We started coming here after it was renovated and absolutely love it! Breakfast to lunch, they do not disappoint! The biscuits and gravy are amazing! It was not, it was under cooked & there was only 3 slices of store-bought cinnamon bread & it came out cold. The syrup was already on the table next to the salt & pepper & had to pry it off the table to pour some, it was also cold. My husband had the BLT & fries. The bacon was cold & over cooked, think they store a bunch in the frig? He couldn't taste the tomato or the mayonnaise-the fries tasted like fish, probably cause the nights special was fish & chips. They charged over $9 for the BLT & fries. We ordered ice tea & water to drink. No ice in either & the ice tea wasn't freshly made. We were excited when we pulled in because of the folksy, "non-chain" look to the place, we were HUNGRY, and there were 4-5 visible open tables just on the patio. We were looking to get in and get out, so... perfect! Not perfect. We should have gone with our instinct to leave as we walked past the half dozen parties waiting for an "open" table. Again, there were 4-5 open on the patio, and another 5 we counted inside as we waited at the hostess stand. All told, we waited 20+ minutes with the hostess complaining that she's the only one bussing tables, that the other hostess is "new" and can't handle it, and that they don't want to "bombard" the waitresses. Folks, the place wasn't that busy. After we suggested taking the open booth (that had been open since we walked in), we were sat, greeted by a huffing and puffing waitress who told us that there were "tables ahead of us," but she would try to get our order in soon. After all this, we were still HUNGRY, so a great meal would fix all... except when the food came, it was bland, borderline tasteless, and just an overall waste of time, money and calories. Great place to stop as you're on your way in or out of Traverse City. Huge menu of a lot of diner staples and some unique options. My husband loved his California Club sandwich though he said the avocado wasn't quite ready for eating yet. My waffle sandwich was huge and delicious but the eggs were a bit too greasy. The stars of the show at this place are their potatoes. Deliciously seasoned fried potatoes come with a lot of the breakfast options and crispy shoestring fries come with lunch. They were so good! The staff is nice and the building is a nice throwback to the 50s and 60s with angular architecture and vintage furniture and lighting. I had to write a review because I'm tired of seeing this place get the shaft. I've been to Flap Jack Shack three times. I live near Ann Arbor and try to make it up here at least 1-2 times per year. There's several places to eat in TC but if you want a simple breakfast with pancakes, French toast, eggs, meats, and toast with some twists then this is a great place. I went there today with my mom and sig nif and we enjoyed a scramble, banana French toast, and yogurt w/housemade granola. All were great and exactly what we were looking for. read more

Not going to lie, I REALLY like this place. Before switching owners, I really only remember the FJS as being outdated and dirty. Now it is clean and outdated...but on purpose. The retro motif will throw anybody for a loop, but after the initial shock, it can be kind of charming. I can only attest for the breakfast here, but everything I have had has turned out to be pretty tasty. The scramblers are delicious as are the waffles and French toast. Patio seating during the summer and an early bird special for breakfast (served until 8) are things I love, and any place that serves a full pot of coffee to a table is alright in my book! read more

meh. i'm having a really hard time writing this review... let me lay out the scenario.. 1. immediately seated, definite plus 2. waitress came and took our drink orders (water and coffees) 3. came back with the water and coffee and took our orders. She then said she was going to be back with a full carafe of coffee to put on the table.. this is when the trouble started 4. i don't have a definite time stamp but it seemed like an eternity until we saw her again, with no coffee, alas.. lady, i'm hung over. i NEED coffee. Anyway she informs us that our food would be out shortly 5. seriously, what is her definition of shortly? I'm becoming so hangry (hungry + angry) i want to scream, but i am urged by company not to, so i keep my mouth shut.. 6. we still have no coffee 7. food finally comes. then the coffee. the food is a little cold and leaves a little something to be desired but good enough. (we got a breakfast skillet, french toast, and an omelet) .. moral of the story, service was lacking, and the food was good, not great, but good enough that we will give it another chance, sometime. probably not when my patience is at an all time low just in case.. read more
