The food here was so good. We were seated quickly, had excellent service, good draft menu of local beers, and a menu where everything looked great. This place is amazing!! I found it while researching restaurants months before our vacation. It looked awesome online (but we all know how that can go), so I knew I wanted to make sure I tried it while we were there. Flatbread company did not disappoint. Their employees were really friendly and on top of things. The view and the atmosphere on the patio was 1. Beautiful, and 2. Relaxed. The food was soooo delicious!!! My family of three devoured the pizza and left pleasantly happy. It's been over a week now, and I still can't stop thinking about it!! On our first night in Portland, we wandered around downtown, looking at the plethora of restaurants feeling a bit overwhelmed. I'd seen this one in Yelp, so when we stumbled across it, it doesn't stand out; we decided this was the place. The pizza quality has generally been fine and service has been decent. Unfortunately, my most recent visit left me really disappointed. They've started tacking on extra charges for basic things that most pizza restaurants include. $1 for extra dried herbs on a pizza, $1.50 for a small ramekin of ranch, and an unbelievable $3.75 per small ramekin of Parmesan cheese. The manager claimed it was "fresh Parmesan off the wheel," but I've never been to a pizza place that charges for a sprinkle of cheese to put on top of your pizza. Even the kids' dessert gets hit -- $0.50 extra for a squirt of canned whipped cream on a single scoop of ice cream. Cocktails are priced like they're in a fine dining restaurant, not a casual pizza spot. It feels like they're penny pinching and squeezing customers for every last add-on instead of focusing on delivering value. I love everything about Flatbread Company. Walking in they have a beautiful, long bar directly in front of you. They offer both indoor and water front outdoor seating. We sat inside, and got to watch them make their hand toss flatbread, then cooking it in one of their two wood burning pizza ovens. For lunch we ordered a small Jays Heart with bacon.(Love the name) It was perfectly cooked, and absolutely delicious.They also have a great selection of salads. Read: a certain crowd pleaser with something for everyone. Prices are fairly standard and the true distinguisher here is their use of Yelp waitlist. It is SO easy to throw your name on the list, go about your business, then head to the restaurant when your table is called - typically sooner than expected. We went with one large and two small flatbreads alongside a yummy goat cheese salad, and it was plenty for our hungry table of four. Service was swift and drinks were all good, save their take on an "espresso martini" which you can safely skip. Thanks for the great experience! Joined the online waitlist on a Friday night and was seated outside with our group of 5 within 15 minutes. Was honestly blown away by everything we got. Highly recommend starting off with the salad with the addition of some goat cheese on the side. The pizzas we got were all fantastic, my favorite was probably the chicken bacon ranch. And the brownie sundae at the end we had for dessert was fantastic. No complaints about the food, and the view from the outdoor seating area was beautiful, and the indoor decor was also super cool. Loved my dinner here a couple weeks ago! We ordered the street taco pizza (a seasonal special, I guess). It was delicious and more than enough food for the two of us. I'm always impressed with how large the waterfront restaurants are on Commercial St. Just as much streetside real estate as anywhere else, but large dining rooms and outside space. Flatbread is no exception. It's also really cool to see the chefs at work in the *very* open kitchen. Found this place and was instantly hungry! While it poured outside many people got hungry, but I was a party of 1 and found a seat at the bar. I built my own flatbread. It was delicious! Bar staff was very friendly and service expeditious. The ambiance was part factory/wearhouse, part bar, part rustic restaurant. We visited Portland for a quick one night trip and were lucky to get seated here without a reservation on a busy Sat night. Not only was the food amazing but they're truly a dog friendly place. We each got an individual house salad and the dressing was perfect- light but delicious. We did a half and half large pizza and it was so good, we didn't have leftovers. The salad dressing was a ginger tamari vinaigrette , which was so good we saved some extra to dip our crust into. For pizza, we had the Mopsy's Kalua Pie (1/2 chicken, 1/2 pork). The sauce is named after a chef in their Maui location. We preferred the pork over the chicken, but both were delicious. The combination of the crisp crust and sweet pineapples really brought everything together. We had a few refreshing cocktails to start and ended with their Blueberry Crisp (It's seasonal, but don't worry, they have an apple crisp otherwise). Its come straight out of the oven hot and topped with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream. We had a wonderful dining experience! I was looking for pizza and this place really delivered. The location was perfect and we only had to wait 5 minutes. We ordered a normal pepperoni & mushroom pizza and a more adventurous street taco pizza and they didn't last long. The kitchen was able to put all the mushrooms for the pepperoni & mushroom pizza onto one side since some of my group wanted more mushrooms and some wanted none. The street taco pizza felt a little skimpy on the birria but the other toppings made up for it. They also had a great selection of drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. Really enjoyed this place. Firstly, the location is great - especially in the summer when you can sit outside on the deck overlooking the wharf. The pizza is delicious and I love the size of the personal pies (just enough for one hungry person or two peckish friends). They are very artisan style and the veggies and cheese are fresh. My friend once saw Steve Carell here and she never fails to remind me of it lol. The service is also incredibly friendly and everyone has a really laidback vibe. New Yorker's love their pizza and some swear by it. Picking up a genuine triangular slice and folding it in half is the way to go. But don't get me wrong; I love other types and styles of pizza and I'm always open to trying something new (thanks Yelp). So when my fiancée and I found ourselves craving pizza in Portland, Flatbread Co. felt like a winner (and it was!). Now despite it being a delicious alternative to a NY style slice, things with Flatbread didn't start off on the right footing. They cleverly use Yelp's Waitlist feature to help customers know ahead of time what the wait is and to even add yourself to said waitlist. A great idea in theory...if it works. That Wednesday night in Portland I kept checking the wait time and it said "under 5 minutes" which meant to me we could walk up and not have to worry about getting a table. Once there, the bunches of people hanging around out front told a different story. When we went to ask for a table we were told there was a 45 minute wait...what?! At that point we weren't going to try to go elsewhere and we weren't starving so we figured we'd wait, but c'mon. Either Yelp (can't thank you for that!) or Flatbread has some kinks to work out because that's a little ridiculous. The only positive in this whole thing was that we only waited a little under 30 minutes. Even so, I was annoyed. Luckily, beer and pizza can solve many things. So can a table outside overlooking the port which was somewhat secluded from everyone else (well, besides the window of eaters inside to my right...). Our waitress was friendly and attentive with taking our drink and food orders so that started to put things on the right path. Having a nice local Oxbow Farmhouse Pale Ale hit the spot while my fiancée had a drink called Portland Punch (which packed said punch!). For food, we went with a couple of Flabread's pizzas, though it's interesting to really peruse their menu as not all of their pies (or flatbreads as they call them) include tomato sauce. They have options to make your own flatbread from scratch and really choose how you want it. I'll say they don't run the gambit of toppings, but that could also be due to their strong ties with trying to be health conscious, offering vegan cheese and chemical-free meats. It also should be known that Flatbread Co. is a chain with several locations in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Connecticut (also Maui?). Despite this, the Portland location does an excellent job of being local friendly and unique to Maine itself through drink and pizza names and locally used ingredients. Kudos for that. After everything I've said, we can finally talk about pizza. Yeah, they call them flatbreads, but these wood fired wonders are thin, crispy, and round (like a pizza!). They cut them interestingly so you might get a slice with no crust (the center square), though the flavors are fresh and delicious. We partook in a regular pie which was perfect, and "The P.E."pie which combined kalamata olives, red peppers, goat cheese, and fennel sausage (for an extra cost). This was the real winner with those ingredients melding so beautifully. My fiancée loved the meal so much she kept saying she wanted to go back! Perhaps we'll have to check out one of their other locations. Overall, Flatbread Co. definitely has a good grasp on the world of pizza. There were some small snafus and things to start, but once we were under way, the quality of pizza (or flatbread?) was amazing. They're worthy of five stars and could totally get it with one more positive experience.
