I was hesitant to write tbis, but I felt it important to make the staff aware and use it as a teaching moment. On Saturday my husband and I were on a rare date. We had an 8:00 reservation but opted to sit at the bar as it's a rare occurrence for us. I couldn't decide what I wanted and asked the bartenders what they would recommend. I ended up opting for a lovely French wine. We ordered an appetizer and split a pork dish. At the end of our meal I asked for an appertif of sambuca and a bread pudding. To which the bartender told me we were going to "tap the brakes"...?? I was honestly confused about being cut off after one drink with meals served and a bar that was half empty and truly it made me upset. While I understand the responsibility of not over-serving, you also have the responsibility of being right about your judgement to which was wrong. We ended up leaving and spending our money elsewhere, a place where I was served because I was not in fact drunk. I was trying to enjoy a few drinks on a date. Be better flat iron. read more

Epically disappointed. On a night they were not busy, we needed a table for 5 so they stuck a chair at the end of a 4top. It went downhill from there. Ordered a soda, it came w no syrup. Ordered a grilled salad for $22+ and 5 of the smallest saddest ribs of lettuce that looked like they had an encounter w heat (I grill Romaine all the time and that was SAD) came out w some sliced chicken next to it. I've had better salads at an Applebees level restaurant. Fries ordered extra crisp w vinegar came out wimpy and tasteless. Across the board ... meh and lackluster service. Vibe of the restaurant was great ... may be convinced to get a cocktail and bite at the bar ... but won't eat there again. Much better options to pick from! read more

We stopped in last night without a reservation and decided to sit at the bar to avoid waiting. The two women behind the bar were fantastic -- very attentive, friendly, and offered great recommendations. The food was excellent overall. The fish and chips were perfectly cooked and full of flavor. The short rib was decent, I make short rib this way all the time and this was lacking flavor lowkey. Second night in Davidson and another home run! What a cute place with a nice cocktail menu as well as food! Madison greeted us as if we were regulars! I soon learned the executive chef had the night off and another chef called in but you would never know it! What I witnessed was team work! The manager jumped in, Madison (and the other servers) garnished, made cocktails and did whatever they needed to do. The food was amazing! Every meal I've ever had here has been good. Great central location in the middle of Davidson. Friend & I went in last Friday for appetizers & a cocktail before a play. She had prosecco; I had the delightful (& generous!) Pain Killer cocktail pictured. We ordered asparagus & goat cheese grits to share. Both were good, especially the goat cheese grits! In the past, have really enjoyed the salmon with quinoa, salads, burger, & steaks. I'll admit, can be a bit pricey, but it's downtown Davidson?- what do the other reviewers expect when they walk in the door? (IFKYK) Note- The couple next to us had a pair of smoked classic cocktails that looked/smelled amazing (can't remember what they were). Parents weekend at Davidson college led us here. Terrific meal for the adults and the students. Cool and intimate room a little off the beaten math in downtown Davidson...but still only minutes to walk from campus. Bar in the middle of the front room provides a nice buzz and, as you might expect, sports on TV. Lovely diverse menu. A few salads and interesting apps; the students had wings, and we had a couple of salads. Wide variety of entrees from sandwiches (the burger got a rave review) to steak to salmon (both who ordered it gave two thumbs up for prep and presentation) and the pork chop (also delicious and well presented). Nice variety of cocktails, beers and wines by the glass. I recommend the black Manhattan. Service was professional, attentive, and responsive...and we're particularly grateful for their ability to accommodate a last minute doubling of our party size. Definitely worth the trip. Not as fancy as a couple of the "usual suspects" in Davidson; not as casual as some of the others. Lovely meal and team. read more

Strong 4 stars. This was a work lunch. Popped in for a quick bite because it was close by. First time visiting. We were able to get a seat fairly quickly. For me the menu is limited. They have great things just not a lot I am going to eat because I am not a seafood person and didn't want a salad. However, those sweet potato fries were soooooooooooo good! My colleague ordered hers with regular fries. Both our burgers well done. They nailed the cook. It was just cooked to well. Now I did find one pink spot but by that point I'd eaten 90% of the burger. And yes I surely did finish it! Shout out to our server! We never wanted for Diet Coke. I have got to do better remembering names! She checked in often. We asked for the check early and it was like she magically reappeared with it 10a later. A couple of weird things. The door. I don't know if this is a summer issue or installation issue. Maybe it will be corrected by the time you go but you have to pull hard to open the door. Like pull on it or you will think it's locked. Also, the music randomly increased in volume. It was at a good level the. All of a sudden it felt like 5:15 in a neighborhood bar. Maybe somebody's jam came on and they wanted to hear it? I touch too loud. Disappointed. Flatiron was an absolute favorite. Now redone with a good contemporary look but with subpar expensive food. Twenty two dollars for two small sliders were the start. Ordered med rare, arrived with cool center and cold unmelted cheese. Then the entrees, my favorite Atlantic Salmon was now appetizer sized with a small piece of fish substituted for the generous portion of the past. The whole dish has shrunk in the "who shrunk the kids" vain. The scallop special had just three small scallops. Not only were both entrees small for the price, they were incredibly salty. Not all was lost, the service and wedge salad were great. Let's hope Flatiron can improve their food quality, portion quantity and price. Otherwise we will not return. read more

We were visiting Charlotte and Yelped it for dinner. We lucked out and found a gem of a place. When you walked in you could smell the delicious aroma from the grill. We made reservations via Yelp and were seated immediately. Our server Chelsea was as sweet as can be. We ordered an appetizer recommended by our server... Mussels! It was a huge bowl full. They came in a Thai flavored broth that had a little kick to it. I didn't think we could finish the entire bowl... But it was so good, that we did! Oh and it came with some breadsticks that were char grilled and so very good... Only wish it came with more! I ordered the Salmon. I asked Chelsea to be sure it was not overcooked. It came out a perfect medium. The parmesan risotto and bok choy that accompanied the Salmon was equally tasty. There was a foam on top that looked really cool but I couldn't say that it had a taste to it. My hubbie ordered the most expensive entree... The NY strip. The temperature was a perfect medium rare. It was served with creamy whipped potatoes. Yummy. It was fine dining in an unpretentious setting... Our kind of place. Thanks for making our visit worth the trip. Bravo to the chef. I made a stop in here late Saturday for lunch while I was in Davidson. The restaurant was not very busy and I was seated immediately. The lunch menu was small but had a good selection. I opted for the Salmon Quinoa bowl and a beer. The food came out fairly quickly - the dish was served cold with the exception of the salmon. I have to admit, this was one of the best preparations of salmon that I've had - crispy on the outside but not over cooked in the middle. I did end up taking off a star due to the price. My 16oz beer cost $16! It was a craft beer that was not rare and I can't think of the last time I've paid that price (other than maybe an athletic stadium). Flatiron has joined our short list for Saturday dinner due to their consistently excellent food, service, and comfortable location. If you can get their deviled eggs with smoked salmon, DO IT! They serve four perfectly filled eggs with a savory (not sweet) deviled egg filling, tasting strongly of mustard and paprika. Yum! And the smoked salmon elevates the eggs like no other topping. It was amazing. Their Caesar salad is also worthy of a repeat. The homemade dressing and croutons elevate this salad, and it's large enough to share a little. On our last two visits, I had the snapper and sea bass dishes. I like that they rotate their seafood offerings based on availability. I appreciate that both dishes were low carb, but yet full of flavor. The meals were cooked perfectly, and the portions were perfect, too. My husband had their burger on one occasion, and it was juicy and cooked perfectly medium rare. Their fries are good, too! But their standout dish is the roast chicken. Last night, they served it with buttered rice and the most amazing brussels sprouts cooked in a savory broth. The chicken was topped with a sour cream drizzle, and was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The chef came by to see if my husband enjoyed the chicken, and told us they cook the chickens whole with lots of herbs to ensure the most juicy flavor. It was amazing! Service had always been wonderful at Flatiron. And the kitchen is efficient at ensuring the perfect timing between appetizers and entrees. I love the atmosphere at Flatiron, too. The building is gorgeous, and the tall ceilings and well-spaced tables make it very comfortable to eat there. And the blues music they played the last few visits was just wonderful. I wish I would have taken pics but my food was delicious! This was our 1st time here and I had the NC catfish over spicy collards and grits with a green onion oil drizzled around it. AMAZING perfectly cooked and the flavors all went great together. Hubby had burger and truffle fries. For dessert the bread pudding with salty caramel and vanilla ice cream. We were clean platers! Flatiron is overpriced!!!! For $60 last night, I had dry, tasteless pasta, a salad, and a glass of water. I will not be returning to this restaurant. This is my second time there. I wanted to give them another chance, but it's too expensive a mistake to make again. Their food choices do not offer the customer a well-rounded menu. We called as we were driving over and upon arrival found that our table for five was being prepared for us. The host couldn't have been more friendly! One shooted, fantastic service by Chelsea commenced! She was friendly, knowledgeable, and very attentive. The selection of beers was very impressive and the ones we tried were delicious, and the food was outstanding! Server was great very attentive, kind, and pleasant. Drinks were well crafted. The Ambiance was a perfect balance of up scale and casual. I went on a date here. We shared the smoked salmon bruschetta which was to die for. That in itself was 5 stars. But we HAVE to mention the spicy pasta that was cooked to perfection and a delightful venison and succotash. Yay Jessica was our waitress and she was GREAT - she knew about the craft beer selection which pleased my hubby but she also knew about the wine list which made me happy. I'm trying to be a wine snob lol Jessica also made a great selection for an app - do yourself a favor and consider the cheese n meat tray with fresh honeycomb cured meats white and yellow cheese fresh pear and grilled crusty bread . Our choice for dinner was the "Day Boat Scallops" you only get 3 but their huge over a cream corn with red pepper sauce (not hot) mushrooms and micro greens!!!! Sorry to leave a one star review but the staff strongly recommended a lobster bisque for me and my wife for lunch; which we ordered but they didn't tell us it also has shrimp in it (to be fair, the staff was unaware; we had to ask and they had to double check - during which time we found pieces of shrimp in it). Maybe our fault for not announcing a specific allergy but the staff should know about shellfish and other potential lethal allergens content before recommending for sure. I don't typically leave one star reviews but since my wife went into anaphylactic shock - and it cost us nearly $2500 in emergency medical bills - it's a must do. Great food and service. But...serving size has deteriorated. I've never been to a restaurant that served less than five sea scallops as an entree. Three is definitely less than five. You know going in that this restaurant deserves to be a little pricey based on the quality of the food and the service, but getting an appetizer sized entree is terrible. When the server came over and asked how things were, I expressed the same opinion, and she basically said "I only serve it". I will go back but I will know better for next time. read more

The evening lobster risotto was $20 (trying to make a point) and my Kale Salad with $added salmon came to $14 + $8 = $22 (still cheaper than the burger). A burger should ALWAYS be cheaper than fancier items like lobster and salmon. A burger in general, no matter how gourmet it is, should be at a price point for guests to choose as a more "simpler" dinner option. The server on a slow, Monday August evening was not too attentive to our table. On the other hand, The host, was superb! We recommend this place and hopefully this feedback is constructive. Hmmmm ... let's see! In my opinion, there was nothing special about our meals or the service. Nothing to make me want to come back. We (4 of us in total) came in on a Saturday morning (around 11- ish) for brunch. Every other brunch and breakfast spot on the street had a really long wait so we settled on Flat Iron Kitchen. There was no wait but the restaurant had a constant flow of people coming and going while we were there. Our server seemed to be a little flustered with the lunch rush and we didn't see her often. We didn't' order any cocktails so I can't speak on that. We had soft drinks, soda and hot tea. The server presented us with a tea box selection with only 4 teas. 1 Mint tea and 3 Earl Grey, that's it. I'm sure she could have found a full tea box. I ordered the Traphouse BLT (House Bacon, lettuce, tomato, garlic mayo on wheat) with fries. The fries were pretty good. There was nothing at all significant about the "House" bacon. It was cold, chewy and taste old. I was too hungry to send it back and ask for fresh bacon but I think freshly cooked bacon that would have made all the difference. Two of my friends ordered the Taphouse Burger and enjoyed it. I tried it, taste good but it was a very dry burger. My other friend ordered the Breakfast tacos which are served with Chorizo but she opted for bacon because its "House bacon". She didn't enjoy her tacos that much, there was nothing to them either. Overall I honestly give Flat Iron Kitchen a solid 3 stars with no intentions on returning ... unless the other breakfast spots are too crowded. read more

If I could have given no stars I would!! My husband and I are fairly new to the area. We wanted to try Flatiron but believe me not worth the money at all!! They price items as if they are a five star restaurant they are surely not! My husband had a pork ribeye and it was mostly fat and almost undercooked. One of his sides was lentils which were undercooked to the point of crunchy! My meal was "roasted chicken " which it was as obviously just baked. They over salted it on the skin. My sides were carrots with peas and Mac and cheese. Which was so basic and you can't substitute any other sides. My carrots were crunchy and not in a good way. The peas looked like they were frozen and had been microwaved. The Mac and cheese might as well been Kraft Mac and cheese from the box which again would have been better. Understand that this was during Christmas in Davidson which is a very crowded event and I get that. My problems have nothing to do with wait times. We were told an hour to an hour and a half and were seated in less than 30 minutes. Our service was really good, especially considering the crowd. My problem is that we took our children and they ordered off the kids menu. My daughter's cheeseburger was actually just a slider which is not described on the menu. My other daughters got the kids pasta which may have been 20 noodles. My wife and I shared a pork ribeye and a Caesar. I did order an old fashioned but it looked like maybe half a normal pour. I even took out the ice cube to check. This meal for 4 was $109.00. Which would have been fine if we really had ordered for 4 but it was two kid meals that were more like very small appetizers, a shared meal, and the smallest our for a drink I have ever seen!! I don't mind spending that kind of money for a good meal but a dang slider and 20 noodles for my kids, a shared meal, and a half pour drink?? Not again! read more
