Set right in downtown Davidson across from Davidson College, the atmosphere strikes that perfect balance--lively but still intimate. The menu evolves frequently, so what we saw differed from what's posted online--but that turned out to be part of the charm. Everything sounded appealing, and choosing wasn't difficult. Our server stood out immediately--deeply knowledgeable and able to walk through each dish with impressive detail, right down to preparation. It's easy to see why Kindred earned "Recommended" status in the inaugural Michelin Guide American South and continues to be recognized for top-tier hospitality and cuisine. Went to Kindred for the first time today. Great service. From the hostess, to our server to the manager (Kenny...?) we had a quick chat before walking out. There were 7 of us in our party for a birthday. I will def be back for dinner! and even to just sit at the bar- drinks were great! I had the Oaxaca flocks- mezcal with pineapple concoction. My cousin had something with gin and sage and her husband had an herbaceous drink with bourbon. To eat, We had the pickles, fried oysters, duck fat fries, momo chicken salad and cinnamon rolls! omg so good! I had the shrimp roll- a lobster roll but made with shrimp. I typically like a fruit chutney with pork chops, but I didn't think this needed the blackberry mostarda. The polenta was tasty. My favorite part was gnawing on the bone at the end. Duck Fat Potatoes (4/5): Lightly crispy exterior with a soft, fluffy interior. The crab fat mayo was mostly savory with a bit of tanginess and paired nicely with the potatoes. Squid Ink Conchiglie (4/5): The pasta texture was PERFECT. Very chewy. The shrimp was decent (bonus points for not having to peel them). There was too much sauce though, and it was too acidic. Pickle-Brined Fried Quail (4/5): More crispy than crunchy. The meat was tender, but maybe too tender? I would've preferred chicken. The chili oil was VERY peanut forward. I liked the wasabi tobiko. It added the flavor without the spice. The green garlic slaw helped cut through the oil so that was a good addition. Wagyu Beef Tartare (4/5): The beef was good and had a nice texture, but the overall dish was also too acidic. I liked the added texture of the thin, crispy sunchokes. Bread Service (3/5): A slightly better version of Hawaiian rolls with some nice flaky salt on top. Milk Bread Pudding (4/5): Had a nice saltiness to it. Lots of butterscotch flavor. The crusty parts were my favorite but the inside was very soft. The ice cream was too melty on top. Maybe it would've been better on the side? Attended a holiday dinner at Kindred and boy was I blown away!! I'm sure our experience was a little different than a typical dinner but just makes me want to go back and try it again. We were served family style with rounds and rounds of dishes to try for the table. There wasn't a single course that was bad. My highlight was the duck confit fries and the wagyu beef tartare. Both amazing!! I also loved the fresh bread, it was warm and delicious. The restaurant is beautiful and has a cool old building feel. Big windows and exposed brick. It felt very homey. The staff were very attentive and gave great suggestions on drinks. They even gave us info on the chef, owners. and history of the restaurant. While the food was good I wouldn't say I was blown away. We had the beet salad which I found underwhelming and lacking flavor, and then I had high hopes for my flounder Milanese but it also fella little short and also lacked the flavor I was expecting. Don't really understand people falling all over themselves to rate this nice little spot 5-stars. Ambiance was very nice in that you dine in essentially a store front across the street from Davidson University ... great location. You may be seated upstairs or on the first floor, basically a matter of chance. Given the hard floor and walls, this is not a quiet or romantic dining adventure. But let's talk about the food. The first food you'll receive is their milk bread ... offered as the bread for the table. Much ballyhooed, the bread deserved its kudos and was 5-star stuff. The drinks were creative and they offered anything one could want from their full service bar ... 5-stars also for the bar and expansive wine offerings. For dinner we both had the pickle-brined fried chicken. It came with a little fresh cole slaw, and all was essentially placed atop a big smear of Alabama white sauce made with ramps. So if you thought the chicken was too briny (we did), you also had to deal with its bottom being covered in white sauce. Since the dinner did not include anything else, making pretty much every item an a-la-carte offering, we also ordered the duck fat potatoes ... which were a 2-star miss for us. They were limp and tepid. Overall ... with high prices, small portions, and none that were a complete meal ... we felt it was a 3-star evening. My thoughts: PROS: - Beautiful old building and the ambiance is really nice. The food is really good CONS: - Pricey and small portions. I know this is a niche spot but just be prepared you might need to order a couple of things if you are hungry - Crowded. Plan ahead and make reservations - Parking is not very easy. Be prepared to walk I was so excited to try to the Wagyu Beef Tartare here and it was nicely priced for what it was. It was a bit lemony for me but the combo of flavors was really unique. The duck fat fries were outstanding - GET THEM. Make sure to ask for the milk bread which we learned was complimentary. This is going to be one of those restaurants that I get to say "hey.. I went there before they ever had a Michelin star, I knew they were awesome". Seriously, I'm not sure how many times I've come to Kindred and the service (no matter how I'm dressed) is completely next level. The restaurant is just about as beautiful as you could imagine, the menu rotates with season / local sourced ingredients, and I've never had something on the menu that didn't hit all five stars. I'm not ashamed to admit that one of the standouts that make me heart happy every time are the damn duck fat fries. If I knew I had one day left to live.. Service- we arrived a few minutes early and were asked to wait near the bar. The barman thought we wanted to sit and told us there were two people ahead of us. We were merely looking for a place to stand. I was embarrassed but cleared it up. The Pimm's cocktails were delicious but the cucumber slices and mint sprigs were enormous. Our table was ready on time. The waiter was good but not genuinely courteous. Whenever my wife and/or I fly into Charlotte Airport we stop in Davidson and have dinner at Kindred Restaurant. It is fabulous. We like sitting at the bar for dinner. The bar tenders are friendly and entertaining and the wait staff is efficient and professional. Last week we shared the Wagyu Beef Tartare. (I guess this is ultimate in cIt was fabulous! I had the Black Garlic Tagliatelle, which was equally delicious. My wife had Soft Shell Crap, which she raved about. For dessert we had the Milkbread Pudding, which was a great finish to a wonderful dinner. I highly recommend making a trip to or a detour to Davidson and eat at Kindred, you will not be disappointed. My friend's and I had a wonderful dinner at Kindred! The only downside was we were seated outside and it was very chilly and they didn't have any heaters out. It also started to sprinkle as well, which I guess is a risk you take here if you can only get an outdoor reservations. They did bring out blankets which was nice. I had heard a ton about the milk bread they give to every table and it did not disappoint. It was super tasty and I loved the butter as well. The ribeye was also a table favorite along with the crudo. Can't go wrong with the squid ink pasta either. We way over ordered and had enough for dinner the next night as well. Scott helped me get in a last minute reservation for my wife's birthday, and they were so accommodating to our 1 year old toddler. While the food is decent, this place is way over-rated and apparently way past its prime. Good service; good patio. The owner however was nowhere on site, tending his seventeen other cashcows, but should spend a little more time at this his namesake restaurant. This week at dinner, I found that dishes are formulaic; minute servings; and overpriced. The pasta sauces ranged from bland to overspiced and one of our 'fresh' handmade pastas was dry and tough suggesting it was made some time ago. The fried chicken should've been called the fried chicken morsel, and consisted of 1 piece, a thigh, cut up into 3 to make it look bigger. And really, a $78 dollar ribeye steak? And, a $40 slab of flounder? No thank you. There are many better restaurants for less $$$$ in Charlotte. My family and I won't be going back until MAJOR changes. read more
