The restaurant has a wonderful atmosphere and very polite serving staff however we go to restaurants to eat. I ordered the salmon at lunch time and the presentation was nice but the salmon came out raw inside so I asked the server if it was cooked medium to which he instantly knew it was very undercooked and took it back to the kitchen. Then he brought me another one and asked me to cut into it and again it was undercooked so I ended up ordering a salad with grilled chicken. The grilled chicken salad was wonderful, very tasted and the chicken was cooked great. I wish I would have ordered the salad in the first place because the salmon tainted my experience here. read more

A friend and I had dinner Sunday night at the flatiron. We both ordered beef stroganoff and received a very small portion for $26. I asked for some Parmesan cheese and was stunned when I received the check to see that they charged me a dollar for the Parmesan cheese. I asked the server why that was and he said, "the chef says we don't give away food here." I said, "I don't give away money either." I paid the extra dollar and have told numerous people about it who are appalled, and say they have never heard of such a thing. Two people from management have called me separately, but were unsympathetic to my concerns. They said in so many words, that is our policy. I said I should have been told about the charge when I asked for the Parmesan Eat there if you like, but check your bill for accuracy and extras. read more

I met a friend for dinner and drinks. The food was excellent and the service was great. My only complaint is the location of our seating. We were seated next to the bar in a high top. It was difficult to have conversations because of the noise and a constant stream of people walking by. Food has always been good however here are my issues with this place. 1) About 4 years ago I went for dinner one evening in the fall and was sat by the front door. After about 15 minutes of the door opening letting cold air in us and all of us still wearing our coats I asked to be moved. Seemed like a reasonable request as there were only 3 tables seated in the entire restaurant. I was told no we can't move you we are fully booked tonight. Well after speeding through dinner in an hour as we were all freezing and then paying, I looked around only to still see a dozen plus open tables. 2) Fast forward to 2024 I decide to give them another chance as once again the food has always been good and I like the atmosphere. I go to place an order for their cheeseburger and ask for no lettuce or tomato (just never been a fan of those toppings on a burger) and am met with a "sorry no substitutions" which is kind of weird. Not like I asked for them to replace anything or remove anything from a sauce. Also I didn't realize I walked into a Michelin Star Restaurant right here in Davidson. Also, strange as they serve sliders (same burger no lettuce or tomato but in slider form). Anyway, I moved on and ordered the chicken begrudgingly as it came out with about 3 spoonful's of their world-famous Mac and Cheese made with get this... the world-famous Tillamook Cheese (sarcasm - like who advertises that on a menu). Anyway, as I am eating my dinner, all 8 bites of it, the guy next to me orders the super special Cheeseburger. He is a real trooper and orders it as the Chef intended with lettuce and tomato no "substitutions". Get this... to my surprise the dish is so specific to the Chefs culinary whims the bartenders asked him which of the 3 types of fries he would like with his meal. Guess the fries are not as intricate to the dining experience as the lettuce and tomato. Long story short this place it too full of itself for what it is for the same money, I would suggest Table 31, On the Nines, or 131 Main where the "Chefs" don't take themselves so seriously. read more

We were so excited to try this restaurant. We went with our smaller children so we definitelyfelt rushed we could tell they wanted us out fast. Then a gentleman told us our 17 month old can't play with ice because he's tables were "brand new". After that we definitely felt uncomfortable because of the mans domener . He claimed the tables were brand new but after a glance all tables were scuffed and chipping. No coasters were served for drinks only plate mats for plates. I'm usually positive about most of the restaurants I visit, but I have to say that the FlatIron Kitchen and Taphouse disappointed me in that the serving size of the food was on the small size and pricey. The food is tasty and the menu is very appealing, but most things are over priced. I had a Taphouse burger, it was good and tasty, but at $24 it's wasn't that good. If you enjoy the food and don't mind the cost, then it's a good place, but if your looking for great food and service along with a fair price, it might disappoint you. read more

We enjoy going to FlatIron Kitchen because of the appetizers and drinks. We usually get curry mussels and a glass of Chardonnay. The mussels aren't as consistent as they should be, there must be a different chef/cook in the kitchen every time we go but it's still good. Service here is always very good. Best Food in Davidson. Period. I take all of my business clients to Flatiron. They alway accommodate our group sizes (usually 8-10 people) despite the smaller, more intimate feel of the restaurant. I never order salmon...it's not my thing. However, the chef recommended it to me one time, and I never order anything else at Flatiron. It is hands down the best salmon I have ever had. The curry mussels are incredible. You won't be disappointed if you order those two things. First time here. Everything else was closed on Monday in Davidson. Really nice place, great bar where you can see into the kitchen. What came out was absolutely beautiful, but terribly bland. Had to salt and pepper it to make it palatable. Very disappointed. When you charge $24 for shrimp and grits in NC you better bring it. Does anyone else charge $25 for a burger in Charlotte? Maybe NYC BUT THIS IS Lake Norman, folks. They say because it is wagyu, ok, some people might want a burger at filet prices and quality but a $15 burger would suit us fine or we would at least like to have the option. Flat Iron has always been a go-to neighborhood bar/restaurant but since the pandemic, the soaring prices have limited us to very few visits. Every visit results in us looking for reasonably priced options but everything is priced as though this place should be limited to "special occasion" dining. We must not be the only ones who feel this way, as there are always fewer diners than before. To me, the ambiance and food quality does not qualify for "special occasion". I'd been to Flat Iron once before several years ago, and did not have a good experience. I've never been inclined to try it again but my friend suggested it recently. I'm so happy I gave it another try! The interior is hip. It has big picture windows that overlooks Main Street Davidson so you can watch people in their cars without their knowledge as you wait on your food. Our service was impeccable, too. Our waitress accommodated our Keto dieter perfectly. We all sampled a different dish. I had 2 appetizers, deviled eggs and Escargot and Risotto with lemon and sweet peas. It was honestly the best risotto I've ever put in my mouth. Thank goodness it was an appetizer portion, because it was so rich. I was seriously in love. My friends got a steak and a pork chop and they said they loved the roasted veggies that accompanied these as much as the proteins. Everything we had was delicious! Go, soon! Review is for pre dinner drinks only: My first impression walking up and into the building was that it has a very grand presence and makes a statement. The corner entrance is cool and someone definitely spent a lot of money on the design/décor. The round shape of the bar at the center of the restaurant really fits as a beautiful centerpiece for the restaurant. We each had a beer before moving on to Kindred. We did the view the menu here; most things sounded pretty good and the prices seemed in line for an upscale dining establishment. The bartender was all smiles and very attentive. Even recommended a good stout. If we're ever back in the area I'd definitely try it for dinner. read more

This establishment is the last one on restaurant row in Davidson I've been wanting to check out. Angled like the flatiron building in NYC hence its name. Kinda casual kinda rustic inside but nice bar in the middle. Outdoor seating too. Their menu I like because it constantly changes with great sounding specials. Just different combinations that sound amazing. Great wine list , my friend and I got the Flying solo Rose, nice, smooth fresh taste. We switched to sitting outside as it was such a beautiful evening, which the staff catered to efficiently. We ordered the Edaname hummus, with grilled pita, cucumbers and radishes. Great appetizer, the Hummus was so fresh and tasty, such great texture. Would love to know what they put in this! Only problem with sitting outside.....seems like once you get you food the flies come out !....slightly annoying after awhile, and we head back inside, hopefully we didn't annoy the staff with our back and forth! For entree, we decided to split the grilled yellow snapper special which came with a base of baba ganoush, and a sauce made of zucchini and red pepper. The one thing I can't resist on any menu is truffle Parmesan fries, so we get a side of those too! The fish came out and looked spectacular, such a pretty presentation. The fries, a whole bowl full had my name written all over it! The Baba ganoush and sauce and fish all together was a great combination, unusual but so creative, and seriously delicious. I am so happy we got this dish as we mulled over several wonderful sounding entrees. My fries were the bomb, I could have eaten the whole bowl, but I shared ! Fries have to be truffle and covered in Parmesan from now on! Definitely another great spot in Davidson, again like I said just different kinda stuff in menu. Very interesting combinations. This place is charming and has personality. It has lots windows that allows the natural light in. The decor is nice and the dining area appears clean. The view into the kitchen is open and the bar is centrally located in their spacious dining area. We ordered off the lunch menu. I got the roasted sliced turkey on ciabatta bread served with a side salad. The bleu cheese dressing was slightly too thin but flavorful. The sandwich was really good. The gouda cheese was a great compliment to the roasted turkey. It was served with a cranberry mayo that was divine. My daughter ordered the black bean burger. It was really goo, also. She got a side salad with honey mustard dressing. The honey mustard had a twang. The pretzel bun that the burger was served on was good. The diner menu is much better than the lunch menu but we were still satisfied with our meals. Our server was kind. He knew the menu. He could have been a little more attentive. Extremely limited menu; farm-to-table establishment, not a place for the kids. The only beef on the menu was the *bison* strip steak but it was delicious. There were a few things that went wrong, but it was not the food or service, per se. 1) Drinks --- excellent and reasonably priced. 2) Appetizers --- Very tasty indeed. Appetizers were two orders of the mussels, an order of Caesar salad and an order of the deviled eggs. All were reported to be fantastic. I had the deviled eggs and they were not your standard store-bought deviled eggs; delicious! 3) Main Dishes ---Three of us ordered the burger and were very pleased; the fries that accompanied were hot and crispy! One of us ordered the baked chicken, two of us ordered the $48 bison strip steak. All-around delicious meals. 4) Desserts --- One bread pudding (a la mode, one croissant (a la mode), one creme brûlée. Tasty; quite tasty! The creme brûlée was so light, it was like eating air! Now for the departures from the norm --- 1) The waitress served five of us and reported that my wife's chicken was overcooked and a new order would be five (5) minutes. Unfortunate, but they were up-front about the error (other places would have tried to pass it off on us and take a chance on getting by). The dish arrived just short of five (5) minute later was was delicious. 2) My bison strip steak was ordered medium rare but was rare as rare could be (difficult to cut). Within five (5) minutes I had a new steak (not the old one re-fired) done to perfection, and it was delicious and lean. 3) No half-and-half (cream) for coffees; only milk. A disappointment, but the "homegrown" coffee was quite good with a bold flavor that was not offensive. 4) The biggest failure --- we were seated at 5:45 PM for a 6:00 PM reservation and there was an air vent blowing cold air down on us in December. We asked to be moved to another table across the floor but were told that the table was "reserved," yet the party was not there. Why couldn't we, as first to be seated, be moved to the other table? Did the other party insist on a seat at the window with a view of "the street?" We ended up eating with our coats on. They made no effort to "adjust" the air flow/heating/cooling to help us out. The best they could do was slide our table over by two feet. [How about adjusting the thermostat up two degrees, fellas.] Nevertheless, I'd go back, but not on a cold day. With the exception of the heating/cooling issue, they were up-front about failures (chicken and steak) and corrected them swiftly. How a business reacts to a customer's "complaint" is a telltale sign of the quality of the business, so I give them high marks. A flow diverter over that offending cooling/heating vent would be a great idea. read more

Tuesday night live music advertised by the artist on instagram and advertised in the restaurant on their tables. I spoke with the restaurant on three separate occasions to reserve and confirm a reserved table for 7 specifically placed "near the music". Was assured not a problem! Upon arrival the music was deemed a "private event" and was shut off by curtains with only guests from a guest list admitted. We couldn't have been seated further from the music on top of that. It was especially disappointing as we have followed these artist for years and I brought my grandkids to see them and even postponed an out of town trip by a day myself. I asked to speak with the owner and was told "he doesn't really do client relations", well that's obvious! We should have left at that point but stayed for dinner and spent $250 anyway, waiter got a 40% tip also as I didn't realize they add 20% gratuity for parties of 6 or more, your welcome! read more

This is the second time we've gone to Flatiron. To set the stage, it is a large pub-type restaurant in the college town of Davidson. The first time we went for dinner with friends, I ordered a margarita with Casamigos Blanco tequila and the bill for ONE margarita was $24! When I ordered the drink, the waitress never told me that the $15 drink would now cost $24 for the switch from Lanazul to Casamigos. We were shocked and expressed our surprise to the waitress who was also the manager. To her credit, she gave us a $25 gift card to come back and try the restaurant again. So, skip to a month later and my husband and I go back for hamburgers. We decide to sit at the bar since we just wanted a quick bite. The same waitress, Shannon is now serving us at the bar. We each order cheeseburgers, my husband orders an IPA beer and I order the "regular" margarita with Lanazul. The bill came to $86!!!! If the cheeseburgers were made with Wagyu meat or were thick and luscious, we wouldn't be as dissatisfied. The hamburgers were mediocre AT BEST and certainly the added charges were not worth the cost. But the real irritation was the additions to our bill. I asked for Cheddar cheese and my husband asked for Swiss cheese on our burgers. For this simple change, the restaurant added $2.00 to our bill for the change from American cheese! For clarification, the cheese wasn't a special cheddar or Swiss, Shannon mentioned it would be shredded cheese sprinkled on top which we were both fine with. She never said, oh, by the way, we charge $1.00 for changing cheese. When we received our burgers, Shannon asked if there was anything else she could get us. I asked for MUSTARD to add to my hamburger and was given a tiny metal cup filled with mustard and for that we were charged an extra $1.00!!! WHO CHARGES FOR CONDIMENTS in a BAR!!! To make the burgers even worse, the description indicated that it would have Bacon Jam on it. There was NO sight of a jelly or jam on our burgers but there was some kind of brown, greasy paste on the bun top which tasted like someone scraped bacon grease onto the bun and called it bacon jam. This restaurant is not only a rip-off but the food is not worth the cost or the under-the-table added expenses they slip on to your bill. Stay away! read more

Wow! What a great experience. We're in town for a couple days visiting friends and took a walking tour of Davidson University. We decided to get something to eat and wondered down Main Street and found the Flatiron. It was about a half hour until they opened so we had to wait a bit. Once inside, the service was great and the food was fantastic. When the chef and sous chefs names are on the menu, you know this is a serious foodie place. Great beer selection and specialty cocktails on the drink menu. I didn't notice that the Caesar Salad had an anchovy dressing before I ordered and asked the server if I could have the dressing on the side. She said it wasn't a heavy anchovy flavor and ended up bringing me both regular dressing and a ranch dressing on the side. She was right, I could barely taste any anchovy! Our party had the roasted chicken, beef stroganoff and Flatiron burger. Chicken looked fabulous and the stroganoff plates were scraped clean ! Might have been a little salty thought. Loved the burger and also had to get a side of the risotto just because it sounded so good. We ended up sharing the risotto.
