This company is HORRIBLE! UNPROFESSIONAL, they hire DISREPUTABLE people! Please if you value your belongings such as your children's baby books,pictures,christening clothes,baby pictures, wedding dress generations of belongings you have saved to pass on to your children and grandchildren DO NOT! use FlatRate! My daughter just had a new baby and asked for her christening clothes that she was baptized in I had to tell her I don't have it any longer because along with my other precious belongings were lost, stolen ,sitting in a storage unit,god knows where. Originally I put in a claim for missing or stolen items such as 12 unopened boxes of Topps baseball cards,my son's PlayStation and a box of games for PlayStation. He has cerebral palsy and could not wait to to have his games back. I had a big dining room that was stored in the basement of the building I moved out of ( a very expensive dining room) The day of the move myself as well as my husband went down to the basement to check how the movers were doing with the dining room we saw them wrapping the table, when the same foreman showed up at our current home he was mean, nasty and did not want to be working at all! When the last of our things were move into to house there was no dining table! He said it did not fit through the door of the basement and left it there!!! Like a bag of garbage, they moved the buffet and the chairs, but left a 6 foot table behind!! Without even telling us. I called my previous landlord and he said the table is not there. So where is my table FlatRate? This same person was so careless with my sectional couch he slammed it on the floor repeatedly he bent the frame and broke the motor right in front of us. That day was a nightmare!! My husband found one of the movers in my bathroom looking through our medicine cabinet, there was absolutely nothing for them to unpack in the bathroom. The box spring for our bed did not fit up the stairs since there was a over hang, he told the other mover to move it to the back room on the first floor, I insisted he find a solution, he went to he truck in a huff and brought back a saw to cut the box spring in half. We paid FlatRate almost $10,000.00 in storage fees and $ 5,000.00 in moving fees!! We NEVER haggled about the price. I called Taneil in claims department and was told to put it in writing, I did that as well as call our representative Larry Petrakakos he acted truly baffled, said he has never heard of anything like this happening! I guess he has never read the reviews on Yelp. We sent him a text asking for the itemized inventory list he texted back saying yes he would, needless to say I never received it from the baffled representative.I filled out all of the paperwork. I received a letter stating they were paying me $500.00 !!!!! We wrote to the appeals department, that was a waste of time. I called Larry repeatedly and he told me not to call anyone that he would get to the bottom of this, he basically appointed himself our liaison. called Tamara at the storage facility she never returned my calls. I called Rosa in the claims department and begged everyone I could to please find my belongings, only to be ignored. Rosa said we sent you a check for $500.00, so in other words basically your screwed. I told her yes I did cash the check because I needed to put a down payment on a small kitchen table, we had nothing to eat off of. I know this review is long, but please bear with me. When you are married for 40 years you accumulate things. I did not notice my children's pictures, christening clothes are missing until you look for them. My heart is so broken. Never in a million years will I be able to afford a new dining room or a couch and never ever will I be able to pass down to my grandchildren things that belonged to there mother or show them their mothers kindergarten work. As time passed we would think of something we had or needed only to find we don't have it any longer,so much of our things are missing. This company will go deaf, dumb and blind if you have any issues with them. Please do not use them. FlatRate if you have any kind of decency in you find my belongings!!!! We put our trust and money in you to move us, put our belongings on storage and have them come out of storage. You hide behind your .65c per pound law, but can you honestly put your head on your pillow at night knowing that people get hurt by your neglect. The issue with my dining table was swept under the rug. I cherished that dining room. I can't take out my children's baby pictures and baby books and reminisce with them and my grandchildren. They moved us from our small (but packed) 1 BR apt in Midtown Manhattan to Sunnyside, Queens in 3-1/2 hours. A group of 4 (Manny, Sasha, Oma, and . . . can't remember) arrived on time, were professional, friendly, and upbeat even though we hadn't finished packing about 25% of our stuff! They brought up empty boxes for us. They wrapped and protected our TV, mirrors, art, couch, etc. We didn't even have to pack anything in baskets or drawers! Although they were pricier than other quotes I rec'd (about $800), we were comforted by the flat rate and knew we'd only owe the $800 (plus tip of course). It was worth every penny. read more

Flatrate may be decent movers, but who can tell if the sales staff won't return your calls? I myself tried to call 5 times during business hours. From all those I received 1 return voicemail returned the call immediately and got no response ... I give up. They must not care about my business. read more

I've moved with flat movers twice and both times they've done a great job. The sales person Stephen was efficient and knowledgeable and very easy to work with. The movers that came were on time, professional and really took care of our stuff as if it were theirs. They worked really hard and never complained. The only negative was the prep call I had with some lady who was not customer service oriented and was clearly reading from a checklist instead of listening to the customer. I would still use flat rate movers and recommend them to anyone. They were the reasonably priced and Stephen and the movers were awesome to work with. The last thing you need on your moving day is stress and your stuff not being damaged and flat rate definitely provided peace of mind! read more
The team did a wonderful job and I was very satisfied. Movers arrived @ 12:45 so well within 12- 2 window they established prior. They were speedy and professional and got everything done efficiently. They were very careful with our stuff and wrapped the furniture well. There were no price changes, or damages that I noticed (although I haven't unpacked yet fully). They are a nice reliable standard with fair pricing. There were no extra charges to worry about. read more
Flat Rate was a completely professional, tech-forward and seamless experience for my Brooklyn-to Brooklyn move. They have an online platform to manage your move -- you can check your quote there, access their packing guidelines and more. Day of, the movers showed up early (WHAT?!) and in 4 hours everything was in my new apartment. They even disassembled a desk for me and put it into the basement since my new apartment couldn't fit it. Shout out to Ivan, Mookie and Mika. All super nice and professional. The move was on a snowy, cold winter day and these guys didn't bat an eye. Total cost was $1000 and I also gave a 15% tip. read more

From beginning to end, this is a professional organization that takes care to make a stressful day less stressful. Elias and his crew were outstanding in every respect. Careful, thorough, helpful, understanding, and creative. They truly made a stressful day less so, and it is obvious that all of them take pride in what they do and in providing a superior service to their clients. I was blown away by their conscientiousness, follow up, care with fragile items, and speed. Having had less than optimal experiences with other movers, I am comforted to find a company that gets it right on the first try. Well done, FlatRate. THIS IS A REVIEW FOR FLATRATE'S ELITE SERVICE. I am just going to post the letter I am sending to FlatRate's Executive staff, because it says it all and it's faster and easier and more efficient (I mean...these people that write reviews all day....mad respect, you help my life out, but I just don't want to spend that kind of time!) Dear FlatRate, I'm writing to express my discontent with FlatRate's services, particularly the Elite Services, on our move from NYC to Boulder in March. I was initially very hopeful about the Elite Service. However, on account of the following, I will not be recommending FlatRate--it's Elite or Regular service--nor using you in the future. I'm writing this in hopes that it can support FlatRate in offering what I feel is a very needed service in a better manner. The following issues arose in our move: * Our sales guy scheduled us for packing on a Sunday, only to notify me a few weeks later (and two weeks before the move) that it would have to be Monday. * I expected that when he changed the packing date by one day, the delivery day would also be moved by one day. Rather, it was moved a whole week later. Our sales contact did not communicate this to us clearly--it was only explained in the fine print of the contract. It was easy for me to assume it would be a 1-day delay, not a whole week, and so when our sales contact explained "the delivery date was also shifted", I did not re-read the contract because why would I assume that it would be a whole week later? * Even after that, the estimated delivery date shifted constantly, and our sales contact was unable to tell me when our things would arrive. I understand that this is the nature of cross-country moves. However, we received a bid from another company (who would have charged $1000 less INCLUDING unpacking & organizing services in our new home) that provided a firm delivery date. Even though Flatrate was unable to provide Elite Service (unpacking & organizing ) in our new home, I chose your services, **specifically and only** because FlatRate committed to delivering by April 1st. Obviously, that didn't end up happening because of the week-long delay. * When our things did arrive, we were disappointed at the amount of damage--especially with the $30,000 family heirloom piece that we had crated. * In addition, there were about half a dozen of our own boxes that were not included on our inventory list--indicating disorganization and lack of attention to detail in how our items were categorized and inventoried. * An integral part of a $25,000 piece of antique furniture was missing, and I spent several hours on the phone trying to locate it. The driver found it hidden in the back of his truck the next day and drove from Denver to deliver it to us. To his credit, he refused the $100 tip I offered him for returning it. However, again it revealed a level of disorganization and lack of care for valuable pieces. * Lastly, when I called your customer service to try to find the missing items (which were also part of an antique piece that is completely irreplaceable), your customer service took 2 days to call me back. * A claim form was submitted at the end of May and no response has been received whatsoever. All in all, I was dismayed at the level of poor service offered for a service charging significantly higher than market rates, labeling itself as "Elite". I found it entirely unacceptable. I think offering firm delivery dates, and significantly enhanced organization and attention to detail, will help Flatrate provide a service that meets expectations. read more

Moved 2 blocks away from one apartment in NYC to another, both elevator buildings. The person from my business handling my move started texting me as soon as the movers got there, saying they were not agreeing to reassemble the desk they agreed to reassemble (it was in the quote). I sent a text to my contact who was helpful and got it straightened out. Then another from her - they would not move a TV stand off of a wall (also in the quote). Straightened that out via text with my contact. Then another - they'd take it off but not put it back. Then another - no one could "assemble a bed" and the price would go up (I also removed a box spring, so that should have in theory saved me money, but didn't). My employee handling the move said the movers were highly rude to her and snubbed her $180 tip (which she thought was a lot - maybe it's not - Im not entirely sure.. but it was 15% as suggested). She asked them if they had remembered to move the food from the fridge and they said yes.. when she went back to the old house, it wasn't moved at all and she did it tonight. I had several bids.. the guys who came out were very nice and we confirmed everything, but the movers themselves - well - no no no. I shouldn't have to handle 15+ texts while working to have a manager tell employees to do what was already in the contract to do. The contractual side was easy.. they sent info to both buildings etc.. but the attitude from the folks doing the move left my employee in tears and highly stressed (and she's not a softie). Since they're about the same price (within 5%) of all the other bids I received, I think they need to work on higher quality movers. read more

I recently moved from one Manhattan neighborhood to another and choose FlatRate. There were some pre-move bumps in the road (for example, it was difficult at times to get responses from our representative, although she was generally helpful, and I had to contact the confirmations office twice regarding COIs, which was stressful to be checking on the day before the move). The movers, however, were wonderful. They were friendly and efficient - they arrived on time and were very fast (but not in a way that ever made me concerned about the safety of my belongings). I couldn't have asked for a better day-of moving experience. I would definitely recommend FlatRate. read more

Don't even think of using them! AFTER ALMOST A YEAR, THEY STILL HAVE NOT PAID OUR CLAIM FOR ALL THE EXPENSIVE PIECES THEY BROKE. We paid extra for insurance, since it was a long haul to CA, they charged me an extra $700 for what they call "insurance". All they pieces they broke had been CRATED, which costs more, however, they still managed to brake the pieces of very expensive furniture. I hired them last year, '13, in October for a move in November from NJ to California. Once they arrived to deliver the furniture and they uncrated the big furtunire, we discovered several expensive pieces were broken (beyond repair). They guy in charged made note of the broken pieces, we took pictures, he said that the main office was going to be in touch with us, which never happened.I contacted them, it took weeks before anyone contacted me back, and said that they would be sending the claim forms, which they never did, so I followed up again. Once they sent the claim forms, I fiilled them up with every single piece they had broken or damaged, 3 pages worth of them with pictures included. Sent them to them, but did not hear back for weeks, followed up again, then the responded saying they were looking at the claim and would get back to me, (by the way, every time they responded, it's from claims@flatrate.com, without a name, contact info handling this, or any one taking responsibilitiy of it). Finally after weeks they responded, this time with a brief email asking for estimates for "repairs" for 5 items, (of the 3 page long damaged pieces, they were asking for the items they choose to repair). After discussing it with my husband, we decided to take a loss on the smaller items and just concentrate on 4 major pieces. A limestone lion head base (entry hallway) that has a glass on top of it as a console, (this was broken in half completely. Our 2 marble tops, 1 a coffee table and a beatifule console top I bought at Kreiss Collection on Melrose Blvd. in L.A., www.kreiss.com, (were beyond repair, but decided not to include them, and have them a loss. But we did include a couple of wooden bookcases they complete broke from the base again. Anyhow, I looked for vendors to replace the pieces, even though they had asked for "estimates for repair". I sent the replacement pieces costs and vendor names to them, weeks later they told me that we needed to have them "REPAIRED" NOT "REPLACED". And that in order for them to determined to have them replaced, first we had to find someone to reparied them. I tried for weeks to find someone to come and give us an estimate to repair, and no would take the job. I finally asked Flatrate to help someone to have the pieces repaired as I was not successful. They replied weeks later and said someone would be in touch with us......I AM STILL WAITING!!!! The pieces they broke are in the thousands, we still have no resolution to this, I've been following up, with threats, lawyer, social media, and they still have not responded!!!!! DO NOT USE THEM, you will be dissappointed and more frustrated than you can even imagine, plus you will loose precious pieces that cannot be replaced, needless to say your very valuable time and be out thousands of dollars. read more

Super professional moving company from initial contact to the planning department and especially the movers, who worked hard and did an excellent job beginning to end. They were one of the higher priced companies I got bids from, but it was good to know what the final price would be in advance with no additional last minute costs tagged on at the end. The company moved my apartment's belongings from Chelsea to the Theater District last week. I was extremely pleased with their service throughout. The planning could not have been more prompt and easy. On the day, the men (Rainny and Sefferino) were on time, they worked very efficiently, packed everything with great care, and delivered at my new address exactly on schedule. Everything went very smoothly. The men were totally professional and courteous. I recommend the company (and the particular crew) without any reservations. read more

Flatrate is probably the best price I found for a legit moving company that offers insurance and takes extra care in moving your belongings. They wrapped all furniture with blankets and plastic wrap as to not damage or scratch the pieces. The only thing is it took them forever to move only a few items, so plan to devote a lot of time for your move, it won't be a quick in and out. Also note that the movers will let you know they work on tips, so they suggest a 20% of your total moving bill for a tip. Yikes, thats a huge tip! The tipping is optional of course, but just a good thing to note, so it doesn't throw you off. read more

This move was my first move requiring a moving company and I will definitly consider using them again, as well as reccomending them to anyone else. The price was completely reasonable, the service was excellent (I was having cable coming at 11 and just as was promised, the truck was at my apartment at 9). My stuff was just as I left it and I am so happy I found them. read more
NOTE: My disappointement is with the process and the salesperson, as opposed to the movers themselves. Ineffective and lack of communication between salesperson, Corporate office and myself. My quoted price differed from the final price without explanation. Even after I confirmed with Corporate office that we will be paying the original quoted price, the final piece of paper we had to sign on the move day remained inaccurate. When we called the Corporate office back, they investigated and this was corrected but then I found out the tip I had previously notified Corporate to put on my card was never recorded/reflected which caused me to go out to the ATM and get cash for the movers in midst of hectic schedule. My final move-in date was never confirmed by salesperson, only by Corporate office who told me that only my salesperson should contact me for confirmation. One table I told the salesperson not to move during the initial assessment was moved, which caused additional work on my end. Dispatch never called to notify that the movers will arrive late due to traffic. I chose flat rate as a friend referred me and it was the MOST expensive out of all other movers I've contacted, including Moishes. But I chose your company nonetheless because I expected quality service with the price, I am extremely disappointed. While the movers did break a floor lamp, they apologized profusely and were just really nice guys and I made sure my tip reflected this. read more

Do NOT use this moving service. They moved me from San Francisco to Los Angeles. I paid them to pack and move me. Not only did they break more than $3,000 worth of my things, they have been a NIGHTMARE to deal with. Do NOT use them. In the end, I got $400 back from them, via their "insurance" Terrible, terrible experience and the rudest people I have ever dealt with. read more

Worst. Service. Ever. Wanted to use Flatrate as their depot is right around the corner from us. Called to arrange a visit and quote, only to have them cancel at the last minute - without offering to reschedule. I called back to get an over the phone estimate, spent 20 minutes on the phone with the woman in Soho answering detailed questions about my inventory... then she goes away to do the quote, comes back and says, "oh, I'm sorry... the real reason your home visit was cancelled was we don't do moves to where you are going. Sorry." Seriously, what a bunch of muppets. So glad they were idiots, though - I was planning to just use them because they were so close, but their stupidity made me go out and get quotes from six other movers (all much more professional) and I've ended up with a much better company at a better price. If you want customer service, DON'T GO TO FLATRATE. read more

My 2nd time using FlatRate. I used them between October-December 2016, a few years before. I moved to a different state. They did a very good job, and their price were surprisingly quite competitive. Long-time customer enjoy some discounts too. Agents are very responsive if you have any problem. Very good customer service. So yep, they can be trusted. A few criticisms so they do better: - They single wrapped every item in the kitchen, really. That's a waste of paper, of resources, of time and it's painful to unwrap. - Their process is electronic signature based. But it feels a bit heavy. They ask too many time for electronic confirmation. This can get confusing if you are not orgagnized and keep track of emails. - Sometimes the discount on your contract is not applied, so you need to chase the agent back and they will refund you. Again, agents are responsive. Not a big deal. - Storage cost is usually expensive: $434/mo but I managed to promotions and discounts. Overall, it's a very good company out there, especially for big moves or long distance ones. read more
HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE. They came recommend from a friend, but they were really skeezy trying to hustle me for more money (one mover said he wouldn't charge the company if I gave him more dough personally - but it would be less than if I paid the company rate). They ended up charging me $1,000 instead of $500 while in the middle of a move and there is no way to get out of that situation. I've never dealt with this kind of behavior before. I used FlatRate to move from an apartment in NYC to a new one in a different neighborhood. When I called to get a price quote, they matched the lowest price I had gotten from a competitor. On the day of the move they arrived right on time, were very friendly and even more efficient. They came equipped with all the proper tools and were very careful with my belongings. They even agreed to take an extra piece when I realized I forgot to add it to the list when I made my reservation. The whole process took less than 2 hours. read more

Perfect Job. My roommate and I were considering moving ourselves, but we decided to find a moving service. Flat Rate carefully wrapped our furniture and televisions with boxes, moving blankets and packing tape. All of the guys were incredibly hard-working and professional. Would recommend this service to anyone. Can not say enough (except for that I'm really glad that I paid someone to move out of my fourth-floor walk up than doing it myself). read more

Very pleased with flatrate. 1-bedroom move from New York to Baltimore. They offered to do it for $2000 which was $800 less than Moishe's offered (and $1200 less than United Van lines). We packed ourselves, but they packed the furniture, electronics and larger items. It went very smoothly. 3 people arrived on time at about 9AM. We were packed and loaded up in a little over 2 hours. They met up with us in Baltimore and unloaded into the apartment in less than an hour. The people were efficient and polite the entire time. There were no hidden charges. Would definitely use again. Highly recommended. read more

Great moving company. Very professioanl and friendly staff- the movers are great to work with (We have used the company 3 times already and will use in the future in neccesary). They are always very careful with our stuff and make sure nothing gets damaged. Definitelly recomend Flatrate. read more

Good job overall...fair price, quick/efficient movers, who were friendly and respectful. Mark did a nice job on the customer service end. One negative was that if you pay for early arrival, they do not guarantee to be there a full hour early. Instead, just half an hour. Regardless, I would recommend and use again myself. read more

Not as happy with them as I initially thought I'd be. A little damage while moving, not the best follow-through... I could go on, but why bother. When spending so much money with one company for one project, one might expect better service and respect. I walked away feeling I had neither. Sad. read more

I called flatrate because an acquaintance raved about them and I figured why not. First, they are sketchy. I called for a quote and they wanted my credit card number on the phone right away to reserve the move, before they'd even sent me an actual quote. I asked the guy to email me the quote before I gave my credit number and he got moved. Second, they are non-responsive. After reviewing my quote, I decided it was okay (they seemed sketchy, but I was looking to move on short notice) and sent an email to that effect when I couldn't get ahold of anyone on the phone. I also emailed my friend's 'moving consultant' thinking maybe the guy I'd talked to was just a dud. After two days and no response, I called again and still couldn't get ahold of the guy. When I asked the receptionist is there was anyone else I could talk to about my move, she put me on hold for long time and then put me to the same guy's voicemail. lovely. So I decided that these were probably not people I could trust to show up on time and move my stuff and sent an email telling them I was canceling due to their non-responsiveness. Of course I never heard back. Third, they are not that cheap. The price they quoted me sounded high and the only reason I even considered it was because I was moving on short notice. I got a quote that was 25% lower on the same inventory of items from College Educated Movers, which also does flat rate pricing. read more

I hate moving, but Flate Rate did help to make the process as painless as possible for my move within Manhattan. Allan Roberts was helpful in working with me to fit the move into my budget. The movers were all professional (Igor, Serhiy and Bojan). We were able to get in and out and in to the different buildings quickly and without problems. read more

(When you see all the five-star reviews for FlatRate, check out how many of them were astroturfed by fake reviewers with no actual other reviews. Then read this:) So they quoted a price that was THREE times more than we were quoted with the company we went with (Intense Movers, but they're not the point.) Then, after the woman who comes to your apt says "$2400" she does this thing where she shakes your hand and fronts like she's about to leave, then she says: "Oh I forgot your houseplant, but I've already locked in this price and I can't change this in the computer. I'm going to have to make a phone call for permission to add the houseplant." Then all melodramatically (again, this whole show is purportedly for a houseplant), she calls her supervisor and explains how a houseplant has to be added to the inventory. Then as an aside she pleads with him, "I really get a good feeling about this couple. Is there any way that you can give them a special rate?" They go back and forth like this for thirty seconds and she finally says, "Really?!? Wow, thanks! They will be so pleased!" and she hangs up. Then she drops the bomb that they lowered the estimate all the way to "$2300." It's like out of a tacky scene from a used car dealership circa 1982. Get out of our apartment, FlatRate Moving. Don't use this company. read more

Should have listened to the other negative reviews. Moved from NYC to LA. It was getting towards the end of move in window period so I emailed asking when they would deliver to me. I never heard back, though they claim they emailed me, which I never received. I emailed to check in with them again. By then, they claimed it was too late to schedule a delivery and the next available delivery date was after my window period for which they would charge me over $400 for extra storage. It's the age-old mover's scam. Hold my items hostage while I dispute the charge or just pay it and have it delivered. What else could I do? The on the ground movers are great, it's the corporate team that are questionable. read more

Great experience start to finish with FlatRate going from Brooklyn to CT. We dealt with Laurence on the front end; they did an in-home estimate and the price was extremely reasonable. On moving day Ivan and his crew arrived right on time, and we were loaded, moved and unloaded in about five hours. Ivan and the guys were very friendly and very careful with everything they touched. Would recommend them to anybody. read more

I was about ready to give them a five-star review coming to the rescue after our previous company pushed our time back to something unacceptable. While initially FlatRate confirmed they could make our last-minute move request happen, after an hour I got a call asking if we "had flexibility" with our moving date...then a call an hour later telling us they couldn't do it. Had an easy move yesterday from Murray hill to midtown east. Mesmer Aranda and Mohamed Bah moved all of my stuff carefully and made sure I was satisfied with every placement of my furniture. They even moved my stuff on the hottest day of the summer! Additionally, I had stuff in the apartment prior to moving in and they were flexible and accommodating when I needed to move things around. They did a great job! I recommended flatrate and these movers! read more

So just to let you know from the get go, they are really NOT flatrate. Yes, my stuff arrived- late. Only one item was broken. However, the kicker was that they added loads of costs on at the end- just like they said they wouldnt. Their delivery guy even said that he would not unload the truck until we agreed on an unloading fee plus tip. The delivery guys are super sketchy so beware. You have been warned. I will never use them again. read more

DO NOT USE THIS MOVING COMPANY!! I had the most horrific move experience ever. If I have high blood pressure, I would've had a stroke already due to this move. Bit of the background. I booked the move a month in advance, requiring packing and moving out of old condo building into new condo building. The move was on 9/2, the window is 9-5pm, with a hard stop at 5pm in the new building. Both elevator buildings and require booking with building management to block off freight elevator for moving. The elevator in the building i'm moving out from was only booked from 9am-1pm. First they showed up 30mins late. After they showed up, the FOREMAN left 2 guys behind to start packing and he LEFT with another guy. HE LEFT TO DO A SIDE JOB!!! He told us he would be back very shortly. HE WAS GONE WITH THE GUY FOR TWO+ HOURS WITH THE TRUCK!!! He did not come back until 1pm. He was not there to supervise or to do ANY WORK!! When he got back after 1pm obviously they can't do the loading since there was another move scheduled that day in the building. The apt was HALF packed cuz only 2 guys were doing the work. The Flatrate movers had to beg to help the other unit's movers to help move there stuff so they can rush and finish their job so Flatrate can use the elevator. At this point everything was a hussle, they started breaking things!! Because the foreman took the truck with the TOOLS, the 2 guys left couldn't remove the sofa leg from the sofa. THEY BROKE MY SOFA LEG. The one thing i didn't want them to break! They rushed everything, my stuffs were packed very sloppy. Miscellaneous stuff were left behind and i had to make another trip myself to get everything left behind. One of the cabinet in the bathroom wasn't moved. I had to leave that behind since there's no way I can move it without a truck. I had to consistently call the office when the foreman was gone and ask where he is. Even the main office couldn't reach him. After the whole ordeal I had to consistently Tweet them, call them, annoy them to get them to resolve my broken sofa leg. It took them 2 weeks to fix the sofa leg and that's called expediting. the 3rd week I was out of the country for a week and I told Flatrate I will be back on 9/22 and call me about the status of the sofa leg and when they can deliver and install. Of course no one called me. I had to call them and they couldn't confirm a delivery schedule. Promised me they would call me back by end of the day to schedule it. Of course they didn't. I tweet it that night and got a call the next day. Finally they delivered the sofa leg and installed it 20 days later. Not to mention the BEST they could do for all this F* up is to refund me 15%. Which is nothing compare to the distress I had to go through because of them. At this point I don't even want to deal with them and I didn't even want to bother with another claim form to get reimbursed for my broken picture frame and missing cabinet in my bathroom. read more

Update 2: The company made everything right yesterday and finished the move, so I am updating to 2 stars. I will update once I receive payment, should be about 2 weeks. Thank you for correcting this situation! Update: If you have a bad experience with this company, leave a bad Yelp review--it is the only way they will contact you. I received a call from customer service directly after posting, and they were very nice and helpful. They are giving me a partial refund and sending over another truck to finish the move this evening. I agreed to update my Yelp review, and I have removed names. Original review: FlatRate Moving is a SCAM--they did not complete my move, lied, and will not return my calls! This whole move has been a disaster, and the movers lied to my face. The company will not return my calls, nor will the lead mover. I spent $1360 to move one bedroom from Queens to the Bronx, and an additional $300 in tips, and for that amount of payment they won't even dignify me with a call for incomplete service. I'm sure if the move goes well, it's great--but if it doesn't, THEY WILL NOT RETURN YOUR CALLS. First I called on Friday during business hours to update my inventory, as I decided to leave some of the furniture behind, and I had mistakenly told them that it was 4 flights when it was really 2; so I wanted to update this information, but I could not get a hold of anyone. Saturday morning, May 26th, for some reason my card was not going through, so they asked me to go to the bank and get a cashier's check. My lead mover's manager told him he was not permitted to move until I returned. I apologized for the inconvenience and pointed out the things that needed to be moved, which was very clear and all was listed on the inventory. At this point I was happy with the service and not concerned. Then the lead mover called me while I was at the bank and said that he trusted me and would meet me at the new apartment. Had he waited as he was legally instructed by his manager none of this would have happened. My roommate called me when they were getting ready to leave and said that they hadn't packed everything. The lead mover told me that it was just the futon which they were unable to move, and I figured that I didn't care about it. No big deal. So I met them at the new apartment, they were very careful with my things and efficient, so I tipped them each $100. I noticed that some boxes were missing, but they said they had everything and were not able to return. It turns out they WERE able to return, because he said, "We made a big mistake and forgot your bed frame, so we need to go back for it." Great. I'm still happy at this point. I reminded them of a large box (that was with the other boxes) in the living room, a mirror, and 5 boxes in the closet. They said they would make sure they got them. They came back with the one large box and told me that they had already packed the boxes from the closet. I gave them the benefit of the doubt. I returned to my apartment the next day to finish cleaning and found an entire van's worth of boxes that they had not moved, plus a very small nightstand that they had moved out of the bedroom but not to the truck, and a small bookshelf that I had clearly asked them to move and was clearly in the inventory. I called the lead mover and the company and left multiple messages (again during business hours), but nobody returned my calls. Finally I started texting the lead mover and threatening to make formal complaints, at which point he was motivated to call me back and told me he would return the following evening (yesterday, Monday) at 6:00 with his own van to complete the move. Great. I can understand a mistake and was grateful he was willing to correct it. He said he'd call on the way over. So I show up early and wait until 7:30, called and texted multiple times, but he was a no show--he didn't even call to cancel. At this point I have an entire van's worth of furniture and boxes that were not moved, the company will not return my calls, I don't have a car, and I am out $1660 for moving from a one-bedroom to a one-bedroom, both within NYC. Fortunately I have a friend with a van, and I am going to pay him $100 plus dinner to help me finish moving tomorrow evening after work. In summary the company did not complete the job, lied, was then a no-show, and will not return my calls. I can understand if they were to call me back and apologize and give me a partial reimbursement (or better, finish the job), but for the amount I paid and no phone call? Totally unprofessional. BIG SCAM, save your money and go elsewhere. At this point I do not expect anything from them because they are liars who do not follow through on their word. Stay away! I lost a lot of money! This was not an innocent mistake, because my roommates SHOWED them the remaining boxes and they refused to pack them. read more

This is my 57th review and I pride myself on being fair and even handed. While I have not always been delighted with the services I have received, I have never called a company deplorable nor would I do so lightly. I was having my apt painted and floors redone and needed to have my furniture removed for the duration, hence my call to Flat Rate. I carefully planned the timing of the painters, flooring install and the movers; (even allotting a few days of "wiggle room" just in case) as I was having people over for both Passover and Easter. The first group of movers picked up my items to bring them to Flat Rates' warehouse in NJ. A little over a week later, they were to be returned. The second group of movers arrived and were almost finished when I was advised that there was "a problem." The mover asked me to accompany him to my lobby where I found my very expensive side buffet, upside down with the back leg and adjoining area smashed to pieces. He admitted that this was his fault, and that this actually occurred days prior as they were loading my furniture from their warehouse into the truck. I asked why someone from Flat Rate didn't call me prior to delivery? The mover indicated he was instructed to deliver it broken, and to advise me to file a clam. This was the first red flag- Flat Rate was aware that their men damaged my furniture and yet, fir some inexplicable reason felt no obligation to advise me of same. I called their customer service dept immediately and incorrectly assumed they would be as concerned as I was. Their response "oh, sorry - can you please just take some pics, fill out the form and send it back to us." I filled out the form, included photos, a receipt which clearly shows the cost of the piece.They also ask for the weight of the piece which I think is absurd. Not sure about all of you, but I just can't for the life of me remember when was the last time I weighed a piece of my furniture. Clearly another red flag. Saying I was devastated about the damage that Flat Rate caused would be an understatement. Just to clarify, if this were a piece of furniture I purchased from Crate & Barrel, sure I would be upset, but we are talking about a piece of furniture that was bought as an investment and was over $6,900. Since I was aware of the value, I opted for their insurance which valued my property at $10,000. I then receive an ambiguous email from their Customer Service Dept - I say ambiguous as it was signed "customer service" which indicated that I needed to contact their vendor, All Furniture Services, so they can assess the damage. All Furniture arrives three days later, the guy tells me how great he is, and that he can "fix it" Fix it? Even if All Furniture were miracle workers and could "fix it" the piece would no longer have the same value. To add insult to injury, I needed to call 20 people and tell them to find alternative arrangements for the holidays - so another big thank you to Flat Rate from my friends & family whose holiday plans were cancelled the day before. I then receive an email to advise that my claim is "now closed" and they would like to offer me $250.00 as a "courtesy compensation" So Flat Rate just damaged a $6,900 piece of furniture, and their idea of settling my claim is to offer me $250.00? They also advise that I can have it repaired by All Furniture Services for $450.00. As per Flat Rate, I have a $500.00 deductible so while they state that they will repair or replace any damaged furniture, in actuality you are the one who pays for the repair. I am far from obtuse so what am I missing here? I am now sitting with the broken piece of furniture in my kitchen (where their men promptly "dumped" it) although it belongs in my living room. My apt looks as if I just moved in instead of having just been redone. And while the damage was due to Flat Rate's negligence, they have now washed their hands of the matter and feel that an offer of a $250.00 check will cover my inconvenience ( It cost more than $250. to have the piece professional cleaned). Inconvenience doesn't even begin to describe what I have been through and again, all due to Flat Rates' negligence. They have decided to wash their hands of the matter, I on the other hand have not. My next call was again to their customer service, to ask for a name/ email address for someone on their management team. Nope sorry - we cannot provide that information. As someone who works in management for one of the largest privately owned companies in the U.S., we have no issue providing contact info for anyone on our Executive Management Team. Why - because any company with integrity actually wants to hear from their customers -whether for a compliment or a complaint. That is what good companies do. EDIT (March 6): I spoke to Vicky, head of customer service at Flatrate Movers, this week. She saw my yelp review and called me to get more details. I was impressed by the proactive response and her interest in my experience. She assured me that what I described below is not the normal experience, and they have spoken with the movers to remediate the situation. I'm happy now to recommend Flatrate to others, b/c clearly customer satisfaction is their priority. (March 2) We wanted an up-front amount to budget for moving costs, so flatrate seemed ideal. Plus, we investigated 3 other companies and all the quotes seemed to be in the same ballpark. Flatrate got the edge for excellent sales service in assuring us *everything* was included such disassembly & reassembly, extra packing and padding for all the furniture and breakables, and taxes + tolls + expenses. Plus, I thought they might be motivated to work efficiently since there was no hourly rate. I was quoted $950 for *everything* and was told that 4 guys would show up, and it would take around 4-5 hours. We had a 1-br apt on the 2nd floor, and we moved to a 3rd floor walk-up apt. Basic inventory includes bed, 2 dressers, large 8ft ikea wardrobe, couch, 2 desks, 4 chairs, dining table, 2 elfa storage units, 4 bookshelves, 3 large clay planters and @ 30 boxes of stuff. Couple of things to note here: - we told the sales rep that we were moving to a 3rd floor walk-up - we initially forgot to include the 3 clay planters in our inventory list, and we emailed the sales rep 4 days prior to the move to be sure and include these So on the day of the move, we were ready with all the boxes packed and labeled. Our arrival window was 1-3pm and the moving truck arrived at 3pm with 3 movers, apologizing for the delay b/c of problems with the previous move. The foreman was clearly ready to get going since they work on commission and not an hourly rate, as he explained to us several times that day. However, one guy had to sit in the truck the whole time so we only had 2 guys to pack up our apt. The planters were the first thing the foreman complained about - "it's not my responsibility... if anything happens to them, it's not my responsibility b/c that's not on my inventory sheet. That is going to cost you extra." We discussed this for a few minutes, and decided that since we did email the sales rep about the planters, we would be ok for insurance purposes. They moved the planters but didn't add anything to the cost. The movers got everything into the truck in about 2 hours, except for the large ikea wardrobe. That was the next complaint from the foreman... "it's not my responsibility." According to the foreman, he felt like the wardrobe was too risky to move and it would likely break and it wasn't his responsibility, as he kept repeating. We did remind him that it was included in the quote - the disassembly and reassembly in fact - but he was adamant it wasn't his responsibility. Since he was so sure it would not survive the trip, we decided to leave the wardrobe to the next tenant. In hindsight, I guess he wanted to leave it b/c it would take too long to handle and he was in a hurry to finish for the day. So we left the wardrobe - the largest piece of furniture, and likely a chunk of the price quoted. When we arrived at the new apt building, the foreman balked at the walk-up. Apparently, he was not told that the stairs were double flights instead of a straight flight of stairs. We didn't know we had to explain the stairs to the sales rep when we got the quote, but we told him it was a 3rd floor walk-up and it was written on the foreman's papers as a 3rd floor walk-up. The foreman kept balking - "this will cost you extra, someone will have to pay us for this, it takes extra time." So he called flatrate headquarters and talked to them for a while, and then handed the phone to us. We explained that we said 3rd floor walk-up but we didn't know we had to give details about the flights. A few minutes after that call, another rep from flatrate called us again. After much discussion, we were told that sales would have to call us later in the week to discuss how this might impact our final price. We were very upset to hear this since we had left the largest piece of furniture back in the old apartment, with no complaint about getting a refund, and we had been accurate in describing everything in our move. Sales never asked for details like how many stairs are in each flight, etc. That said, the movers worked very hard to get everything upstairs in 2 hours. They finished the day around 8.30pm, so it was about 4 hrs of work and 1.5 hr of transit time. We tipped them 17% on the original cost even though the large wardrobe was left behind. We used FlatRate Moving to move our things from a home in Colorado and our home in NYC to our new place in Philadelphia. To put it simply, everything about this move was completely unprofessional and mismanaged. We could not be more disappointed in the lack of service and the aggravation caused at every turn and it ended with our furniture (worth $7k) being delivered broken and a refund of $450 for move that cost just shy of $10k. We submitted a claim and an appeal to the verdict with all information documented with pictures and explanations in powerpoint. Bottom line, a move is stressful enough so you need to work with experienced professionals you can trust. I highly recommend avoiding FlatRate. Here is an outline of our experience: 1) COLORADO PICK UP: After flying from NYC to Colorado explicitly for the confirmed October 27 pickup, the van didn't show in the first few hours of the window. We called FlatRate and were told A) there was no pickup scheduled for that day despite the fact that we had confirmation emails not only from a FlatRate employee but also their automated system and B) the pickup would have to be scheduled later in the week on a day we were no longer in Colorado. After spending time talking with 2 different people at FlatRate, a supervisor told us that the automated system had sent us a pickup confirmation in error and that was a common mistake. He said, "We don't know why it does that, but it does. I'm sorry." This still didn't make any sense to us because despite any malfunction of an automated system, we had written confirmation from our sales rep we had been working with. Additionally, FlatRate had already charged our credit card the day before which only happens when the pickup is confirmed. After making it clear that we were unable to come back on any other day and supervise the items being packed, the supervisor made arrangements for a truck to execute pick up that day. Our whole day was spent re-organizing the move for the planned date and then waiting for the truck to show up. A fundamental error such as the pick up day and window being incorrect (after a human and automated confirmation) is absolutely unacceptable, especially when you live out of state and are taking the time to fly in specifically for the move. 2) PHILADELPHIA DELIVERY: On the receiving end in Philadelphia, the Colorado shipment also proved problematic. We emailed our sales rep and Dejon Reid (VP of Sales!) multiple times to coordinate the delivery date and received confirmation for Nov 19-20. I reached out to both gentlemen on Nov 8 and again on Nov 13 to advise them that the Philadelphia Police Department was only able to give us a parking permit for the delivery truck on Nov 19 so that is the date we needed to lock in. We never heard back from either. On Nov 14 we received an email from an employee saying that our shipment was enroute and there were no delays. On Nov 16 we received an email from the Long Distance Department confirming the shipment was still enroute and the current estimated delivery window was Nov 17-20. With no further information and no response from our sales rep or the VP of Sale about locking in Nov 19, we were forced to call FlatRate on Nov 18. The representative said, "I don't have Nov 19 confirmed and will inform you once we have a date available" implying we had no prior communication with FlatRate about the delivery date whatsoever. We were frustrated beyond belief: how was there no record of the Nov 19-20 window that the VP and the sales rep confirmed and now we were being told there was actually no date on the books at all? We explained the entire situation to the representative who had to escalate our situation only to come back and confirm Nov 19 an hour and half later. I understand that it is difficult for FlatRate to confirm exact dates and times but it should be noted that on Oct 31 the sales rep confirmed a delivery date of Nov 17th via email; so, if he could do it once, why could it not be confirmed again two days LATER than the original planned date and if it couldn't be confirmed why wasn't that communicated to us? Also, we were extremely disappointed that we were emailing with a VP at their company who never responded to our emails after Nov 8 and let our move fall through the cracks to again be dealt with by us, the end customers. 3) CLAIM PROCESS: The claim process was just as bad as the rest of this experience. Filing the claim and then waiting 2 months for FlatRate to tell us they would give us $450 for the $7k worth of items that were damaged was insulting. We then filed an appeal. We were continually told they were still looking into it every time we followed up. Months later still no answer. This is customer service at its worse. If you do decide to use FlatRate, please make sure to get the highest insurance possible. read more

I had to refute such gouging and eventually I agreed to a more a nominal increase, but an increase all the same which I found unscrupulous as nothing in original contract said rates could change. It was agreed to in writing and verbally that I would be alerted 48 hours before delivery. Instead not only was it only 24 hour notice, Flat Rate Long Distance decided to proceed with the move on a date when I had tight availability and that my building management could only assign 2 hours use of elevator even though we both requested the day after which was free availability. The movers were there a total of 3 hours and 45 minutes. Given the poor scheduling, I had to take a conference call so I was preoccupied for the first 2 1/2 hours of the move. For what remained, it was difficult to direct the movers due to the missed time and so many items being in my apartment that were brought up to adhere to the 2 hour elevator limit. Also, due to the poor packing of my boxes, and being that I have so many items, it was difficult to properly place items for two reasons, first, the boxes were not detailed in labeling. For instance, books in boxes were labeled to the correct room, but there was no labeling of which shelf, and left to right, based on how it was setup before packing it up. Therefore, without me overseeing, the books were unpacked and haphazardly placed on shelf, mostly back to front. This created aimless work for the movers and extra work for me in completely reorganizing. I received no heads up beforehand that this may be the condition they arrive in to prep so unpacking was futile as all furniture had to be thoroughly wiped and sanitized. I had to refute such gouging and eventually I agreed to a more a nominal increase, but an increase all the same which I found unscrupulous as nothing in original contract said rates could change. It was agreed to in writing and verbally that I would be alerted 48 hours before delivery. Instead not only was it only 24 hour notice, Flat Rate Long Distance decided to proceed with the move on a date when I had tight availability and that my building management could only assign 2 hours use of elevator even though we both requested the day after which was free availability. This is my 57th review and I pride myself on being fair and even handed. While I have not always been delighted with the services I have received, I have never called a company deplorable- nor would I do so lightly. I was having my apt painted and floors redone so needed to have my furniture removed, hence my call to Flat Rate. I carefully planned the timing of the painters, flooring install, and the movers (even allotting a few days"wiggle room") as I was having people over for Passover and Easter. The first group of movers pick up my furniture to bring to Flat Rates' warehouse in NJ. A little over a week later, they were to be returned. The second group of movers arrive and were almost finished, when I was advised that there was "a problem." I accompany him to my lobby where I find my very expensive side buffet, upside down with the back leg and adjoining area smashed to pieces. He admitted this was his fault and that it occurred days before when loading my furniture from the warehouse into the truck. I asked why someone from Flat Rate didn't call me prior to delivery? He was instructed to deliver it broken, and to advise me to file a clam. This was the first red flag- Flat Rate was aware they damaged my furniture and yet, for some inexplicable reason, felt no obligation to let me know beforehand? I called customer service immediately and assumed they would be as concerned as I was. I assumed incorrectly - their response was "oh, sorry -fill out the form and send it back to us". I filled out the form, included photos, and a receipt which shows the cost of the piece.They also ask for the weight - which is absurd. Not sure about all of you, but I can't for the life of me remember when I weighed a piece of my furniture. Clearly another red flag. Saying I was devastated about the damage that Flat Rate caused would be an gross understatement. Just to clarify, if this were a piece from Crate & Barrel, sure I would be upset, but we are talking about a piece that was bought as an investment, and over $6,900. Since I was aware of the value, I opted for their insurance which was to cove me for $10,000. I receive an ambiguous email from their Customer Service Dept - I say ambiguous as it was signed "customer service" (no actual name of a person to follow-up with). They tell me to contact "their vendor" All Furniture Services so they can come and assess the damage. AFS arrives three days later - the guy tells me how great he is, and that he can "fix it" Fix it? Even if AFS were miracle workers and could "fix it", the piece would no longer have the same value. To add insult to injury, I needed to call 20 people to tell them to find alternative arrangements for the holidays as I now have a large piece of furniture sitting in my kitchen, and my kitchen furniture in my living room, so clearly I cannot have people over- another big thank you to Flat Rate from my friends & family whose holiday plans were cancelled the day before! I then receive an email to advise that my claim is now "closed". They have graciously decided to offer me $250.00 as a "courtesy". So Flat Rate just damaged a $6,900 piece of furniture, and their idea of settling my claim is to offer me $250.00? They said I can have it repaired by AFS for $450.00. As per Flat Rate, I have a $500.00 deductible so while they state that they will "repair or replace any damaged furniture", in actuality, you are the one who pays for the repair. I am far from obtuse so what am I missing here? I still have the broken piece of furniture in my kitchen (where their men promptly dumped it) and my apartment looks as though I just moved-in, instead of just being redone. Flat Rate is not disputing that the caused the damage - so the big question is why would any reputable company not take responsibility and offer to replace the piece? They are under the misconception that an offer of $250. will cover my inconvenience Inconvenience doesn't even begin to describe what I have been through - all due to Flat Rates' negligence. I then receive an email to advise that my claim is now "closed". They have graciously decided to offer me $250.00 as a "courtesy". So Flat Rate just damaged a $6,900 piece of furniture, and their idea of settling my claim is to offer me $250.00? They said I can have it repaired by AFS for $450.00. As per Flat Rate, I have a $500.00 deductible so while they state that they will "repair or replace any damaged furniture", in actuality, you are the one who pays for the repair. I am far from obtuse so what am I missing here? I still have the broken piece of furniture in my kitchen (where their men promptly dumped it) and my apartment looks as though I just moved-in, instead of just being redone. Flat Rate is not disputing that the caused the damage - so the big question is why would any reputable company not take responsibility and offer to replace the piece? They are under the misconception that an offer of $250. will cover my inconvenience Inconvenience doesn't even begin to describe what I have been through - all due to Flat Rates' negligence. They have decided to wash their hands of the matter, I on the other hand have not. I called Customer Service to ask for the name/email address for someone on their management team. Nope sorry - "we cannot provide that information" I work in management for one of the largest privately owned companies in the U.S. We gladly provide contact info for anyone in our company. Why? - because any company with integrity actually WANTS to hear from their customers -whether for a compliment or complaint. That is what good companies do. That is what ethics and good business practices are all about. Clearly Flat Rate has none. read more
