I grew up with natural curly hair in Hawaii. Demographics dictate that majority of my classmates were of Asian descent, meaning straight hair was the "norm". For the first 8 years of my schooling career (K-7) my curly hair was often the butt of teasing that I experienced; I would later realize that it was because my hair was so different that my peers didn't have enough experience with my type of hair to begin to understand it. I was also the only person in my immediate family network with curly hair, that even my mom didn't know how to care for it. She just sent me to Asian barbers to cut it super short (cheaper cuts was what my mom had to find). Thus, I grew up hating my hair. The point of my sharing is that I didn't trust anyone with my hair and thought growing it out and long was my cure all. It worked for a decade or two. Everything changed when I met King--Barber at Da Wig Shop. Long story short, after I learned about his history with different variations of hair, and another good friend of mines encouraging me to go short, I mustered the courage to do so and haven't regretted it. I am not the only one please read the other reviews from people I have never met. Worst service and lack of professionalism. The staff is horribly rude (for no reason ...even if you are nice to them). They talk down to you and don't follow up so that you can book the ($25) required consultation. They are unequipped to answer basic questions about appointments, their services, and walking into the OPEN salon is a massive deal breaker. My birthday is coming up and I called two weeks prior to book an appointment. I was told I needed a consultation (Wee FANCY) then I could book an appointment. The salon (some guy) took my name and number then never called back (he was rude then too). Two weeks later I didn't hear anything but wanting to give it another try (It's my birthday people) I asked my daughter to walk over and book a consultation for me in hopes that good vibes and clear communication would elevate any issues we had on the phone and at least we would understand their availability. She was met with and I quote "The worst thing you could have done was come down here to see if you could squeeze in an appointment". No one was trying to squeeze in an appointment we were simply trying to book one and figure out your availability. I find it distasteful when people force their bad mindset on others. Our intentions were PURE. Sadly I was looking forward to getting my hair done and promoting this salon. Save your hard earned money and give it to please who can interact with individuals with respect and care. Got a haircut with King today and he was nothing less than a complete professional. My haircut was exactly to my specifications, and he was quick. Used a razor for my line up as well. I love this barbershop. It is clean, quiet, professional and I have never left with a bad haircut. I always show up as a walk-in (no appointment) and have never been charged more than $20, which is a great deal. I have probably gotten a haircut from every barber in the shop and they are all skilled. Major props to African-American barber (not bald, his chair is in the middle area) who I've seen work all by himself. He did 5 haircuts before mine, took no breaks and gave everyone a high-quality fresh cut. You never know why any business is understaffed, so people need to learn patience. My only complaint: I have paid $15 for parking due to a long wait at the barbershop. If you are cheap, find parking that is not in the building. I've got my hair cut at 2 other places in Honolulu and this is by far the best and most satisfied I have been. It's been all good here for me. When I make an appointment I pay more so I understand, and expect to be cut on schedule and I get my cut on schedule. If I walk in I wait and pay less. It was really hard to find a place where I really want to come all the time to cut my hair. I like a high bald fade. I like to skin to feel silky smooth like a baby's butt. I want my fade to be precise. In the mainland US it's not hard to find. They seem to be on every corner. Here in Hawaii it's more like Supercuts and Fantastic Sams on every corner. The price may be a little higher than what I usually pay but I get what I want. Make a reservation in advance and you won't have to suffer the walk in line. The owner of the shop is the most disrespectful person I have dealt in a long time. I have been going to the shop for over 4 years now, everyone knows me by name and have seen barbers come and go besides Mr. King (who is an awesome person and barber), I have ONLY been loyal to the shop because of the relationships I have made with the barbers, so much so I still keep in contact with some of them. My husband went for a haircut here. Loved how they cut his hair. When we got there, there were only 2 barbers. We were 3rd in line as a walk in. Short wait only 30 mins or so. That's really a short wait for being 3rd walk in. So have your earbuds with you if you are a walk in just in case. Parking is cheaper at Diamond Parking (the dirt road lot, where the I think handivans are) in the corner of Kapiolani and Kalakaua $6 for 2 hrs during the day or $15 in the Century Center. My husband is African American and was desperate for a haircut. I did a fair amount of research but couldn't find a place I felt confident about. He's VERY particular about his hair and who cuts it! We finally met an Uber driver that recommended King so I set an appointment. First, they were very accommodating. King initially didn't have any availability but when I said we were desperate they said we could come in early (they ended up having a cancellation that we took at the last minute). Second, the shop is very clean and incredibly professionally run. Next, it's very family oriented. My husband doesn't swear and he felt the shop was a place that people could absolutely bring their children. The other staff/owners were very hospitable and welcoming also. I've been coming here for years and they have strict rules from following the names in order to no cursing and taking calls outside in respect for other customers. Mo is great, I did have a terrible interaction with the front desk person who (after i decided to come and let the barbers do their job- aside from the ignorant and ill mannered person that picked up the phone he soon after i sat for my cut came in with a terrible attitude asked if i was the 323 area code that called and hung up on him. Been looking for months for a good haircut place. Like many have said here already, Honolulu is saturated with cheap places and rushed, mediocre, assembly-line cuts. Not only was this--without exaggeration--one of the most meticulous and precise haircuts I've ever gotten, but the price was literally the lowest I've seen here. I was floored. I paid double and gave the rest as tip, and gladly. This is my first ever Yelp review and I am happy to give it. Horrible customer service, the website states no appointments needed, but yet when I call to see exactly where they are located because I drove over to the establishment I was told that salon appointments for women had to be by appointment. The jackhole at the front desk stated that there was no way I called because him being the proprietor of the establishment and not having trust in others to do the job, he was doing it so therefore he would have picked up the phone. Guess what he didn't, so therefore I went in person. As a Black female just getting to Hawaii, I'm looking for a good salon home and all I can say is that his nasty attitude at the front desk totally turned me off. I didn't even stay to hear the prices or services, him and his business lost what would have been a good paying customer all off of his nasty attitude.
