We love coming to Ota! My daughter has tight curls and wanted to find a stylist who just got it. We found Roges on Yelp and literally every time she gets a haircut it's The Best Haircut Ever (that's a direct quote!). At the time, my other two kids and I were happy with our stylist but she moved back to Idaho, so we started coming to Ota. We love! My younger daughter (wavy hair) usually goes to Roges but very recently scheduled with Destiny. My son goes to Katsu and the both of them just love the styles they get. I go to Roges and I love my haircuts too! In particular I love that my hair grows out so well, and my haircut suits my hair so well that I don't have to use any product if I don't want to because it falls so nicely, Everyone here is just lovely. Very professional, incredibly knowledgeable, super friendly, and so chill. The salon is bumping, but the schedule is always en pointe - no over scheduling! There are a few metered stalls in front and a free parking lot in the rear shared by other businesses in the building, in addition to a lot of neighborhood street parking, particularly if you don't mind a stroll. Let me start by saying that I wish I knew about this salon 2 years ago when they first opened here in Hawai'i!! Located on Waialae Ave, this salon gives off a vibe like NO OTHER here on O'ahu, in an AMAZING way! The salon is ran by Owner, Rogés & he also has his son working here as the master barber, Katsu. Aside from men & women's haircuts, they also offer eyelash extensions & braiding! It's amazing!! You DO NOT have many salons dedicated to braids, dreads, etc. but this place has it! The salon is nice and clean and the staff are very welcoming. Rogés has been in the industry for many years and from the short amount of time I've spent in that chair with him, I've seen around 5+ people go in and out of his son's chair! I came in for a Balayage, showed Rogés what I was going for and he delivered. I mean, he did not disappoint! Best of all, he was very patient and put a lot of time and effort into it, even styling my hair when the coloring was complete. This salon is also very affordable but you can see the passion through their work. You need to give this place a try! You will not be disappointed! Thank me later;) P.S.- There's a parking lot behind the salon, free! Don't make the same mistake I did when I got there and park on the street. Unfortunately I don't think I would go back to OTA international. The shop is clean, modern, and well appointed. The haircut was fine and I don't doubt the talent of the barber(s), however the overall experience wasn't great. I made an appointment at 3pm to get my hair cut and didn't end up getting taken until around 3:40. Throughout the entire haircut, the barber, Katsu, would stop cutting my hair repeatedly so he could adjust the TV or his entire cable box so he could watch a football game. A 30 minute trip to the barber ended up taking almost an hour and a half and it left me with a bad impression. read more

The staff were friendly, the shop had a nice interior, relaxed vibe with good music, and it was clean. Katsu cut my son's hair.... he took his time, was very meticulous and did an awesome job. Left a great review when I first came across this salon, but I unfortunately had to delete it since I got my hair botched today with the worst haircut every by a stylist that I've went to a few times so I trusted him with my hair & was not new to being serviced by him. He's the owner of the salon & his name is Roges. He's done great work for me before but yesterday he did a really bad job. I have Curly hair & I explained what I wanted in detail & I thought we were on the same page, i continuously explained that I didn't want him to go too short & how I was afraid that he would because I didn't want a full haircut just wanted bangs. He cut a lot of inches off disregarding what I said & he knew it looked bad after washing it because he was struggling to style it & had me help assist him.The bangs were so high & the cut was super choppy & I ended up with a mullet. (The day before my birthday). Will not be returning due to the fact that I reached out to him & zero response of anyways to help or refund me. I don't even feel pretty & I wish I never went there & my birthday is ruined. Worse experience ever & I've spent hundreds of dollars at this establishment & always left generous tips prior. I will no longer be sending or suggesting this salon due to the way the situation was handled. Be careful if you go here & be firm about what you want to them because it's your hair & you have to wear it. You will not get refunded or offered any alternative to fixing it so be careful or go somewhere else. I was here on holiday and needed maintenance on my locs and a shape up. I contacted them and they were able to get me in while I was out here on my stay. Let me tell you they got me together ! And on short notice. D was very nice and got my locs together, and another younger gentlemen( sorry I did not get his name) lined me up. I just want to start off and say, by NO means was my son an angel.However. When I called to make the appointment , I made sure to ask for someone who was experienced with working with children because my son has a tendency to move a lot and sure enough he was moving a lot but it had to do with my 6year old son not liking hair in his face. He did make that clear to young guy that was cutting hair, which at first he accommodated to my son by brushing it off his face but towards the end the barber's patience grew short. There are three issues I had during this experience : the first was towards the end, the hair on his face was really bothering my son and my son began trying to wipe it off his face using the apron. This became an issue because there was obviously hair on the apron. Instead of being more empathetic, the barber made a comment about how my son was only making it worse for himself but did nothing to remedy the issue. ( we had barbers in the past blow dry or just brush the hair away) He ended up crying out of frustration for how uncomfortable he was. The second issue was after my son had his his cry; the cut was almost done, however I asked that it be cut shorter to match the picture I showed him which only upset my son because more hair was being cut into his face , which again the barber allowed him to rub loose hair more into his face when my son was trying to wipe away the hair. During this whole ordeal , my son physically hit the barber twice which I believe is what ultimately made this man give up cutting his hair. Here's the issue , i reprimanded my son for hitting but it was almost done , my son did not want the apron on him anymore. I told the barber , "I have an extra shirt for him "so I didn't mind him finishing the cut without the apron. Regardless ,when my son took off the apron, the barber lost his patience and helped him out the seat and concluded the cut... it wasn't done , one side wasn't yet trimmed on the top. I had to go home to finish trimming the top. The third is issue I had was maybe due to my own personal negligence but on their website, it say that men's haircut was $25/35 so I was assuming my son's haircut ( a child) would be $25 or less. The man charged me $30 strait. Like I said, it's my fault for assuming, I should've asked but I feel that $30 was really pricey for the fact that he didn't even finish my sons hair. All in all, I gave them 2 stars because I know my son was a huge handful but I Did ask beforehand for someone who's had experience working with children and I did warn him before I scheduled the appointment that my son does move; the price I was being charged for an incomplete cut was the reason I gave them two stars. However, don't let my review deter you from this business as a grown adult ,I just personally don't recommend this place for children. My son's old barber relocated to a new shop on the other side of the island and so we decided to give this place a shot. Friendly folks hang out here. I usually do my own locs, but there is a section on the top of my head where my hair is super soft and fine. No matter how hard I've tried I cant seem to get the hair stay twisted into my locs. Dii of Locs Hawaii did such a great job. She was so fast with her little crochet needle. All those stray hairs didn't have a chance to fight back. I colored my hair a few days later and even after shampooing my hair still looked good without even re-twisting. Go see Dii! read more

I went from dark hair to absolutely beautiful blonde color and my hair isn't dead due to the salon using THE BEST products! I don't normally do reviews but this had to be said. I've been debating for a couple of years to make the big chop from my 18 years of dreads. When I looked for an "African-American Hair" two places popped up. Read both sets of reviews. Some of the reviews for the other spot had some customer service issue reviews. I called and they did not give me the warm fuzzies! Discouraged I called Ota. I explained my situation and after speaking with Roger (hope I spelled that right) I felt ok like this might be the one!! Made the appointment for later that afternoon but called again to ask more questions (I've very indecisive, it's a gift) I spoke to Katsu (please forgive if misspelled). He was so nice and patient with me asking all these questions. But after hanging up I was absolutely sure this was the place! After getting to the appointment and speaking with these two gentleman I felt completely at home. Roge has a calming reassuring spirit that had me ready to cut it all and not look back. Then having Katsu tell me he went through the same about his hair and that he understood how much of a big deal this was I was completely ready. I felt comfortable and felt like I was back home and I had known these guys all my life. If you are thinking about some drastic hair changes come here. Such an awesome barbershop. The barbers were so down to earth and they cut hair exceptionally well. Katsu cut my boyfriends hair (African American) and he hasn't experienced any bumps or anything that happens when other shops cut his hair. This shop will become a staple for us.
