The staff assistant that helped fit the preliminary exam was courteous and respectful. She answered basic questions and looked up information as needed. I finally got some eye drops at Target thinking it was just something OTC medication can fix. After that failed me, I made an appointment with Jennell. She quickly discovered the root of the problem was that I had allergies that only effected my eyes. I've never had allergies before so it didn't even cross my mind. I can't say she was outright rude, but the way she spoke to me felt disrespectful and condescending, like I was being talked down to rather than helped as a customer. I also didn't feel like the promotion or pricing was properly explained. It was more like, "This is the price, this is how it is," and I was just expected to accept it. The eye exam was also a little strange to me. The initial tests were done in the store with the machines, but the actual optometrist exam was done online. I understand that this may be possible with today's technology, but if I'm paying the same exam fee, I'd personally rather see an optometrist in person. What really surprised me was how different the atmosphere felt compared to last year. I walked in without an appointment last year and everyone was welcoming and happy to help. This time, the whole place felt much colder. I don't know if management or most of the staff have changed, but something definitely feels different. I understand that it can get busy, but if customers are constantly waiting because there aren't enough people to help, maybe it's time to hire more staff. I needed glasses, so I went ahead and finished my purchase this time. But next time, even if getting an appointment at Costco is harder, I'll probably go there instead. I'd rather have straightforward pricing, enough staff, and an actual in-person eye exam. Josh was great, but unfortunately, the overall experience was disappointing.

I cannot speak on whether these comments reflect any management awareness, but as a patient, it made the environment extremely uncomfortable to hear what I understood and perceived as carelessly ignorant. Living in California for a long time, these were not words I expected to hear and very inappropriate for the workplace let alone a "professional" clinic. The rest of my experience here has been great; amazing doctors and aides who have persistently helped me through my slough of issues, which makes this all the more unfortunate. I will not be returning and would strongly encourage a refresher of basic empathy, inclusiveness, and client-sided professionalism.

But honestly the two women at the front deserve their own review. Between them they cover glasses fitting, frame selection, lens materials, insurance navigation, and scheduling, and they do all of it with a warmth and generosity that is just rare anymore. They treat you like a person, not a transaction. This is a practice that clearly puts everything back into patient care. You feel it the moment you walk in. I won't go anywhere else, especially not the boutique-y places that prioritize their lavish lifestyles over patient care.

Prior to visiting Dr. Neunzig, I received two very badly botched lens prescriptions from a different optometrist at a different company in Monterey. After two failed attempts, I was told that it was impossible to correct my vision. I thought it was crazy to tell me that it was my fault! So, based on my neighbor's recommendation, I sought out Dr. Neunzig. Boy, was I glad I did! He had no problem at all in refracting my eyes for new lenses. I have the new glasses now and my vision in both eyes is better than 20/20! I am beyond happy to be able to see clearly again! I plan to continue seeing Dr. Neunzig for future checkups and refractions. I highly recommend Pacific Grove Optometric Center.
