Great local spot for dinner or Happy Hour. Noticed there is a pretty large group of neighborhood regulars but still felt comfortable and welcomed. They don't have a huge menu but plenty of good options and variety. Love that they have several options other than a salad for those who are looking for more than regular bar food. read more

You'd never guess that this good of a place is tucked away in a strip mall. We were greeted and sat right away, even on a busy weekend afternoon. It's mostly booths and tables in the back with high top tables and a bar as soon as you walk in. Tons of seating, surfing vibe and decor along with the menu. Very kid friendly. read more

Went tonight for the first time to meet friends. At the initial walk in beside the hostess the rest of the staff was very cold and couldn't be bothered since we were not regulars. They close at 9p. No problem. At 8:24p we were told they close at 9 and the kitchen is closing now. Trying to get the bartenders attention between him hanging out with his friends and talking to the wait staff was a joke. We saw more of his back than actual face to face time. As he was rushing to get the four of us to pay at 8:40p, he was still serving his friends. We left at 9:03p. A friend asked for another drink at 8:40p so we all could finish our food and drinks before we left and she got the death stare from the bartender. As we vacated at 9:03p he was still serving his friends drinks (about 8 people that were still in there and he just opened another drink for one of them as we are walking out). Definitely won't be back! Waste of money and not exactly relaxing after getting off work and trying to have dinner with friends. We didn't go there to be rushed out the door. The regulars we were with said the tacos were nothing like they normally are. They sent out four pieces of small buffalo chicken bites on a tortilla with lettuce for their "special" and $1 for sour cream. Highly disappointed! read more

Here from California, probably the best place we have been. The customer service is 5 star. We arrived before opening and they sat us in a booth and offered us a drink before the kitchen opened. The food was incredible. We had the steak bites, chorizo queso , bang bang shrimp, Phili chicken. Everything tasted so incredible. The servers check on you. The cocktails are amazing. We came here because it was on Diners Drive Ins and Dives. We started with the chorizo queso (no pics because we demolished it). The chips were homemade and huge and crunchy. I got the special of the day which was two pieces of beer bartered mahi, coleslaw and sweet potato fries. Everything was delish. But I had food regret. My boyfriend got the shrimp and scallop Cajun pasta and it was to die for. The cream sauce was spicy but manageable. And the scallops. Holy hell were they perfect! I don't give five stars after one visit ever, but this place deserves it. Menu is A+, service is an S ranking. Took some mushrooms and came there, and man. Whoever owns this place is managing the shit out of it. They have people cleaning tables a son s people leave. A guy must've overheard we needed a togo box, and brought it before our waitress, and he brought one like 30 seconds before her, but she was an excellent and informative server. I've had this place bookmarked for a while and just tried it out the other day. I hate to say that I was really underwhelmed by it! Every picture on Yelp looked so appetizing, but my experience wasn't that great to the point where I would think to come back. My bf and I visited around 5:30PM on a Saturday evening. Usually, I would expect any restaurant to be pretty busy, but we found ourselves to be one of two parties inside (there was a pretty busy bar and few outside, but still a little weird). This is on the corner of a shopping center, and there is plenty of parking located right in front. The first drawback was the fact that they said we weren't able to mix and match tacos! They looked so good, and they even advertise on the menu that their BBQ Fish Tacos were featured on Food Network's Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives ... but you have to get all three. Kind of ridiculous, if you're paying the same amount and it isn't that hard to make three different items as small as a taco, but whatever. I ended up getting the "Grilled" Chicken and Shrimp burrito. The chicken was super dry, nothing about it tasted grilled, and it was in fact pulled chicken. There were maybe 4/5 shrimp, bland rice, two small slices of avocado, drenched in white queso and a small amount of pico de gallo on top. Would I pay $15 for it again? Definitely not. It lacked flavor, and made me wish we had gone to a real Mexican restaurant. (Which BTW, they offer chips and salsa on their appetizer menu for $6!! Crazy) My boyfriend got the Firecracker burger, and the only good thing he said about it was that it tasted like it was actually grilled (versus cooked on a stove top). Not sure if they do or not, but it was a pretty average burger and not worth the $12. Overall, it was super bland and definitely not worth the price point they were charging. I would much rather get real Mexican food or a place that actually serves quality burgers. read more

Flips Flops is Virginia Beach's local version of Bahama Breeze serving up Caribbean inspired American dishes. Everything I've had from here has been so good. The Jamacian jerk wrap: Flavorful. The lobster mased potatos: Yummy and full of meat. The corn & crab fritters: Excellent! I couldn't get enough. The sweet potato fries: tasty without having an overpowering sweetness The tuna Philly: Amazing! The tuna, peppers, and onions were seasoned well The homemade queso was probably the best queso I've ever had (I need a bottle of that stuff). I was seriosuly licking my fingers behind this sandwich. I really like this place. It actually was on the Travel Channel so we decided to give it a try. I do intend to go back, to try some other things on the menu with hopes of improving the rating. The restaurant layout is perfect. Definitely has enough space to dine as a family. Shrimp tacos Brisket sandwich Sweet potato fries Shrimp tacos were perfect. I couldn't even finish them. Sweet potato fries were great. Although I am used to having them with sugar and cinnamon. My husband had brisket sandwich he wasn't as impressed. He kept eyeballing my shrimp tacos so I gave them one. It wasn't that wasn't good but it wasn't as good as the shrimp tacos. I will be back with the family to try some other things on the menu. THIS PLACE IS AMAZING! I say "This" place because I am currently eating lunch here for the first time and it's FANTASTIC. Great portions, the food is so fresh and good, and the drinks are to die for. The staff have been super kind and courteous. The ambiance has fun music and the decorations are cute, it doesn't feel cramped or anything. Nicely spread out and not too loud or anything. Perfect for a date or a family or friend outing. I got the Island Girl frozen drink which was amazing, and my fiancé had a draft beer that he's been searching restaurants for and can never find (Frogman Lager). We shared the blackened tuna nachos as an appetizer which honestly would have been great for 4 people (we finished it anyways- but to the detriment of not being able to finish our entrees from fullness). The nachos were so yummy and fresh and the tuna was perfectly cooked. My fiancé got the Brisket Burrito that has a blackberry BBQ sauce and he loved it, and I had their BBQ Fish Tacos which were also amazing and I will return for them!! Looking forward to return here! Seared. Tuna. Nachos. If you don't remember anything else about this review just remember to get the nachos. I never would have put the two together on my own, but damn it it was worth the almost hour's drive from my hotel to try this dish. The tuna was cooked perfectly and practically melted in my mouth. The generous portion of tuna combined with the crunchiness of the chips, the saltiness of the cheese and the 'sparkle' from the house made lime crema.... perfection. Seriously, this dish has ruined me for other nachos. I should have stopped there, but I wanted to try the BBQ fish tacos that Guy Fieri raved so much about. I had high hopes based on the nachos, but unfortunately I was disappointed. I wanted to like the dish so much more then I did but, for some reason, it just didn't work. The fish was flavorless, and the other 'stuff' that they put in there just did not work well together. On the plus side, my server Ali was amazing. She happily accommodated my nitpicky requests (lime creama instead of wasabi crema... because lime crema is awesome!) and did not make me feel rushed as the servers around me were beginning to clean up. During the night of my visit they also had live music. There was a guy playing an acoustic guitar and he was pretty good. I wanted to sit on the patio and enjoy the night breeze, but I will never say no to live music. Live music and friendly staff. Had dinner here last night finally (it's been on my list for a while) and went with the Firecracker Burger for $12. It comes with 1/2 lb burger with grilled jalapeños, pepper jack cheese and flip flop's sauce served with a side - I went all out and chose tater tots. The burger was good - simplistic with no lettuce or tomato but it was cooked well and the jalapeños had some kick to them. They have a number of other items on the menu that look pretty great - fish tacos and tuna and such. My friend ordered the Island rice bowl with chicken breasts and salsa and rice. It looked pretty good and much healthier than my choice. The live acoustic music was actually really good and the guy was singing some popular music - Let it go (Disney), Johnny Cash, Eagles, etc. It was pretty busy when we arrived for Friday night dinner date night rush but calmed down within the house and was pretty quiet by about 8:30pm. read more

Of course, Red Stripe is great with tacos, so I followed suite and ordered the BBQ Fish Tacos. Needless to say, I demolished them, only after I had to add some hot sauce to it. Our server was quick, polite and wore his mask correctly. The reason for 3 stars is Covid protocol. They had a party of 20 in this small space. Which I don't think is allowed. As we were eating, they kept getting closer with no masks on. Another server had her mask under her nose. Staff was not stepping in to get those people to back away from us. This is easily one of my favorite restaurants in Virginia Beach! The hubs and I have been going here since not long after they opened. Since moving to Chesapeake, we don't get out there every single week like we used to, but still try to get out there every chance we get. The Curried Corn & Lobster Bisque and Chorizo Queso are among my favorite appetizers. While I have enjoyed many menu items, I'm partial to the Jerk Chicken Entree (I'm a little obsessed with the gnocchi), but try to partake in the dinner specials to change it up a bit. For lunch visits I recommend the Chicken & White Cheddar Wrap or the Fried Mahi sandwich (soooo good!). They've got the BEST sweet potato friends on the planet... seriously, I'm not kidding. They're ridiculous! The red sangria is always a must and when we can fit dessert in our bellies, we like to see what kind of cheesecake they come up with next (s'mores is my all time fave)! The owner Kris went out of his way to accommodate a special order request. My husband casually asked for the mod and was happy to get the dish either way. Kris made it happen in a way that was unexpected and amazing. There are still good people out there and it truly made my day. This is a story of unfortunate timing... We were spending time in the VA Beach area and had been given Flip Flops as a place to hit. We were told their fish tacos were amazing. We researched their hours with the current climate you can never be too sure. Their website featured pictures from their opening weekend. It gave the current limited menu (which included fish tacos). It listed the new hours as well. We drive over 40 minutes for brunch on Sunday to find their chalk board stating to check their website for their new open dates. Their outside seating looked great and they were ready for their patrons. Unfortunate that we couldn't try the food, but look forward to returning. We went for dinner on a Thursday. My one complaint is that they don't take reservations one or even hold tables if you call ahead. We had a group of 8 and I called as we got on the road to get there, but couldn't hold a table. It's not a big place, so I knew seating 8 would take some arranging. The food and service were great. Tuna sashimi app was amazing. The calamari was cooked perfectly, but could have used a little more seasoning. Portions were generous.
