We stopped by here during our trip to Maine. We were intrigued by a road side hot dog joint...so we had to try it. First off, cash only! Upon entering, this place had a line out the door (warning: you must keep the door shut or you will get a friendly reminder!)- once the line started moving and we got inside, we observed the ordering process. First tell her how many hot dogs, 2nd confirm what toppings you want, 3rd- pay and you're outta there! It all happens in a cycle... We ordered 2 each with Flo's relish and everything on it. I'd definitely recommend ordering at least 2 per person, as the dogs are small- they were good though, I liked the relish and the simple toppings- Parking can be a little crazy here- we had people park behind our car in the lot blocking us in, but luckily we all left at the same time. There are only two types of hot dogs: the "House Special" (Flo's relish, mayo, and celery salt) and the "Loaded" (Flo's relish, green relish, mustard, onions,celery salt). Just get the House Special. There are other toppings, yes, but it's just simpler that way. NEVER order ketchup. Do you want your head cut off? 5. Now Gail has spoken to you again. She'll address you by how many hot dogs you ordered. "Two?" This is where you tell her what type of hot dog you want. I said, "One Special, one Loaded." Very simple. 6. Gail will now ask, "Drink?" They have most regular sodas, Moxie, and even milk. "Coke and milk," I replied. At this point, you can also add anything else you want, but do it quickly. Don't stand there thinking about it and holding up the line. Flo's carries chips (Lay's, Doritos, etc.), jars of Flo's relish, and t-shirts. Simply say, "And a bag of Lays chips." Done. 7. She'll add everything up super quickly and tell you how much it costs. CASH ONLY. Pay in the smallest bills you've got, if you can. 8. Relax; you are almost there! The line will start to move quickly as the people in front of you are served their hot dogs. Excitement starts to build. Your head hits the ceiling because, yes, it's really that damn small in there. Gail is impressive to watch; she moves quickly. And despite my somewhat "Soup Nazi" description, she was quite nice. She knew some of the locals in line and chatted with them. Hey, if I ran a place that long, I'd establish some rules, too. 9. Finally, the wait is over. Gail hands you two warm hot dogs wrapped in napkins. "Thank you!" I said. "You're welcome," she replied, and went right back to doing what she does amazingly well. 10. Take your drinks and hot dogs and enjoy them outside on the picnic tables. Savor them because, unless you live nearby and can get your Flo's fix anytime, I swear you'll have dreams about these hot dogs. I have no idea what's in that special relish sauce, but it's more addictive than crack. FINALLY, after 20 years of coming to this part of Maine, I have made it to Flo's. I think as most institutions go, you should partake at least once. We went twice. Parking is nuts. The wait is astounding (from the door to counter, it is a 1/2 hour wait). The dogs are just dogs, BUT for some reason they work. I went twice this year, while I did not go ga-ga over the Flo's special sauce, my oldest thought it was the "cat's pajamas" (bringing that phrase back). If you are tall, beware (just trust me). So... I don't even know where to begin this review. We've been vacationing in Maine for the last 5 years. We come up here for the lobster, the views and the beer. As we pulled up, he gave me the rules(which are also posted on the door to the stand), tell her how many you want, and she'll ask you , when she's ready , what you want on it. There is no other way to order here. So , second, I'm 6'4. The doorway when you first enter was fine, then it became like that scene in Willy Wonka where he has to keep crouching and stooping further and further to get to the tiny door at the end. So we get in line, he took care of the ordering for us (we had exact change so they were happy), waited about...10 or so minutes for our dogs and back to the house we went. The entire experience was fun. It was an old style hot dog stand. A very militant ordering system. Limited choices but they all sounded good. All in all, a pretty cool place and a throwback to simpler times. Oh , wait they serve hot dogs here. See, the thing with Flo's is , it's an experience. A little bit of Americana if you will. Mainly, NO KETCHUP (*unless you're under 15 - and even then, they start weaning the 12-14 year olds off the ketchup in advance to prepare for the hot dog coming-of-age). I'm actually a huge fan of this rule since I hate ketchup on anything, and I especially hate it on hot dogs and burgers. Sue me. It can be a long wait. We came on a Saturday around 2:30, and ended up waiting until 3 to actually receive our 'dawgs. Most of this was because there were 10-12 locals in front of us who ordered batches of 10 each. They also are cash-only (of course they are), and we were helped out by a nice man who tossed us an extra dollar because my mental tax calculation was a bit off. Anyway, back to the hot dogs themselves. They're $2.75 each, and the classic comes with mayo and their special house (onion) relish. It was pretty good - tight casing, classic fenway frank flavor - and I've never had mayo on a hot dog before, but I was pleasantly surprised. I drive by Flo's everyday on the way to work, but with their hours (11am-3pm) it's really hard to catch them while their open. I finally made my way here on a Sunday at around 2:15. There was a pretty long line, nothing crazy for a take out place though - around 8 parties in front of us. The ordering process was not efficient and caused us to wait about 20 minutes for 3 hot dogs.. insane!! I wouldn't be as angry if the hot dogs were worth it, but they were average. The house special includes mayo and relish, which surprisingly goes together. The food was fine overall, and it's definitely a very affordable place. I tried my best to explain my childhood memories of Flo, the little building with a very low ceiling, and the uniqueness of this experience. Is it what you expected?" Well, it is a hot dog. I know what to expect when I eat a hot dog and I enjoy one on occasion. Flo's does have good, steamed hot dogs, but they are pretty average. They do, however, make a very good relish and that can make an ordinary hot dog a little more special. This place is all about its unique charm and history. It is also an easy and cheap lunch that really hits the spot. My last visit to Flo's was as a child. I remember an older woman (I believe Flo herself) standing behind the counter making hot dogs. I called her the hot dog lady, but I remember I admired her since I loved hot dogs when I was little. The business was passed down to family and they continue to run the little hot dog stand. Flo's is a very small building with low ceilings. Seating is limited and most likely you will be taking the dogs to go. There is a method to the ordering system to keep the crowds moving smoothly. Flo's does get busy at times so expect a line out the door. I recommend sticking to the ordering system and letting the owner prepare your hot dog following her routine. On second thought, no soup at all. But the breaded bangers are beyond worth the price of purchase as each chunk of wiener volleyed about my tongue, begging to be hosed down the throat with a straw gushed burst of fresh Pepsi. Puddings might normally be sticky toffee pudding with custard and cheese cake with chocolate sauce, ideally both of which would be delicious and obviously made on the premises. But I didn't see any. Full disclosure: I hate hot dogs. I can't stand the sight or smell of them. I truly find them repulsive. Why am I writing a review for Flo's Hot Dogs then? It's an experience. This place is inexplicably famous and is well known for its surly service. I think this reputation dates back to when Flo ran the place which was well before my time. She was apparently a good old fashioned New England curmudgeon. I wish I could have seen her in action. The lady who works there now is a 3rd generation one woman show. She actually seems really nice. I remember the lady before her who I assume is her mother or mother-in-law was a little more snippy. My best memory of her is hearing her yell at people to shut the door because they were letting in the bees. Even with the current woman it is quite the intimidating ordering process if you don't know what you're doing. It reminds me of the "no soup for you" soup nazi from Seinfeld. The only other time I've been as nervous ordering food was when I was getting cheesesteaks at Pat's in Philadelphia. There is a posted guide on how to order at Flo's and if you don't do it right, she does it right for you. My husband went in with an idea of what he was going to get but he came out with something completely different. I think she ordered him whatever the special is and the "loaded" and he ended up with 6 hot dogs when he originally intended 4. The rules are first you say how many you want (number ONLY) and then when you're allowed you say how you want them prepared. Hurry up. The locals sitting on the stools are judging you. Harshly. They also sell their own brand of relish which I've heard isn't even that good but we bought one on our last visit anyway. Here's another thing that is actually posted on the rules: AN AGE LIMIT ON KETCHUP. You can only get ketchup on your hot dog if you're 15 or under. I mean, how funny is this place? Since I don't eat these things I have to go on what others say. I've heard anything from they're "okay" to my dad's glowing recommendation of "they shit". The line tends to go out the door so you will probably feel uncomfortable and cramped while you wait. The hot dogs are served on a steamed bun, boiled dogs. So don't think of ordering them grilled. I have passed this place many times and have seen lines out the door! But never had the opportunity to stop until last week! My hubby (who is 6'3, keep reading and you will see why this is important) and I stopped in for lunch last week. We went about 1pm and although there was a line...it was not out the door (thank god). The building is a bit decieving because you think you have alot of room once you go inside but you soon realize that you have next to no room and the ceiling gets shorter. You must have your order ready and I suggest reading the sign on how to order because you want to get that part right! The people infront of us were not ready so they got passed and we got to order first. We waited for a while for our hotdogs, more than 10 minutes, the whole time my poor husband had his neck crocked so he didnt bash his head off the ceiling! It was very uncomfortable. Stopped in at Flo's today with my friend for what we thought would be a quick bite. It was a very hot day and the line was out the door. The inside is very small and can only fit about ten people waiting in line. We waited about a half hour for two hot dogs that were very good but nothing special. I could make them exactly the same at home in five minutes. My friend was disappointed the bun was not toasted. My opinion is: if the woman working there didn't insist on putting on all the condiments herself, it would have taken a fraction of the time to serve the customers the hot dogs. World's most delicious, melt in your mouth hot dog. We ordered two dogs at first. One loaded and one Flo's way. I prefer Flo's way with onion. The relish gravy is a thing of its own. After finishing our dogs in 2.3 seconds we decided that we HAD to go back in line to order more dogs otherwise we knew we'd regret it. Also discovered Moxie's soda here. I haven't even had the hot dogs yet, but I don't need to to review this place. I love hot dogs and I love places that are quirky. But this place takes it to another level. It takes "Flo" about 5 minutes to make a hot dog and another 10 to take everyone's order not once but twice. So if you want a hot dog, make sure you set aside your afternoon. The first time around she asks how many hot dogs you want, and the second time for what toppings you want on it. Apparently here in Maine there is a shortage on hot dogs and only the proper number of hot dogs can be steaming at any one time. One too many hot dogs in there and the entire thing just unravels. Also, I am 6'8" and the ceiling inside this shack is no taller than 6'0" so I had to stand with my neck kinked the entire time. How about you think of others "Flo" and fix the darn ceiling. Stop being a crotchety old woman hating everyone who comes into your shack. Whether or not this hot dog and "special sauce" is tasty is not the point.
