I spotted Flo's Kitchen the first day I started working in Wilson, out driving around during first lunch hour. If you have never been to this part of town, you probably wouldn't be as curious as I was, seeing that blue house at the end of a three-way intersection, always with country kitchen aroma lingers for a mile. They called it the "cat head" biscuit, because it truly is large, no, giant biscuit. The ones I've seen most folks get are the tenderloin biscuits (I like mine with egg too) and the bacon, egg, and cheese biscuits. "Get the tenderloin, it's really the best." I should have listened! But I wanted something a little more classically southern so, never having experienced Flo's (despite 30+ years of visiting family who had emigrated from Ohio to Wilson), I picked the country ham with egg and cheese on my biscuit. It was good, but for my only Flo's pilgrimage so far, it wasn't quite as good as I was expecting. These biscuits are sprawling concoctions. Flo's starts with an oversized but otherwise classic southern biscuit and then starts filling it with all manner of gooey, fatty, coronarily sinister fillings, usually involving some combination of egg and cheese with perhaps a meat. Once they're all built up and delivered to you they seem to weight a pound each and they are oozing and slipping and collapsing in on themselves. My family told me I should go for the pork tenderloin, and they were right. The pork is tender, well seasoned, lightly breaded and just clean enough in taste that it didn't contribute to a cloyingly over the top fat bomb (I tasted my brother in law's biscuit). IQ got a sausage biscuit and was only able to finish half. My country ham was good but a bit gamey and not sliced thin enough--I think if I had skipped the egg and cheese, and the ham were thinner, I would have liked it better. I still think if you are in these parts, maybe on your way to the beach or visiting nearby cities, you should give Flo's a try for a breakfast or brunch. Prepare to drive around--you sort of orbit the place, it's almost like a rodeo ring of cars--and bring cash. And keep it simple! Tenderloin biscuit, maybe the sausage only with no cheese or egg, and you'll be able to really enjoy the biscuit as well as the filling. read more

Flo's is something special, and it's almost a rite of passage to dine at Flo's when you live in Wilson. Their biscuits are truly unbelievably delicious. It's Southern food in its truest form. Flo's is the real deal. I can't tell you what the menu is like anymore, but I remember the mornings of my childhood eating gooey cheese biscuits, biscuits with egg and cheese and sausage and cheese biscuits. I no longer eat meat, but these were very fond memories! It was always a treat to get a Flo's biscuit. Trust me when I say, these biscuits are classic and a must. If you are in the area, already live there or have otherwise never tried a real Southern biscuit, this place is a must. It's a business that has been going for decades, and it's well-loved by the locals. The prices are still unbelievably cheap for the amount of food you get. The only warning I have is that you may feel sluggish and greasy after downing one of these...but it's worth. You probably don't want to make a habit out of it though. read more

A quaint area and town, but in a word - NO! to this restaurant. The first clue should have been the necessity of dodging trucks and cars waiting at the drive-through in order to enter the front door. Inside is seating for perhaps 25, and the daily menu is posted on a white board at the entrance. Since pork chops had been mentioned before, I chose them, hush puppies, cole slaw, and apple slices. What they lack in quality they make up in volume, with two decent sized breaded chops. As far as I could tell, there was no seasoning in the breading; the slaw was OK, hush puppies were dry but OK, and apples were from a can with some cinnamon on top. The chops were dry (one was so overcooked I left it on the plate). All utensils, including the plates, are plastic, which in itself isn't all bad, but added to the fairly poor quality of the meal, it adds to the 2 star rating. I won't be coming back. read more

I'm a fan of your typical "mom & pop" restaurants because they tend to offer up a little something more than your average chain restaurants and Flo's holds true to that theory. Upon arrival I was a bit confused about what I was supposed to do as there was a long line in the road leading up to the building. Was there a drive through? We're the drivers just waiting to turn? Either way it seemed like a bad/dangerous spot to be so I decided to park and go inside. I then noticed that there were employees outside taking orders on the curb drive-thru style just without the speaker. Inside was pretty crowded. That's a good sign. It either means the food is really good, really cheap, or the place is really small. Flo's is a combination of all three. I ordered a steak egg and biscuit expecting something similar to what I get from McDonald's but instead the biscuit was about twice that size and SO tasty. Flo's is NOT a place to go for a "sit down meal." There is minimal seating inside, and It's a drive-around/drive thru biscuit joint at heart. That being said, if you are a fan of the biscuit, especially a cheese biscuit (cheddar, baked into the biscuit), and especially of a cheese biscuit stuffed with your favorite breakfast meat, then Flo's is one of the BEST biscuit joints I have ever experienced in the south. The locals call it a "Cat Head" biscuit, mainly because the cheese and meat biscuits are the size and weight of a cat's head. My favorite biscuits include country ham and cheese, tenderloin and cheese, bacon and cheese, and smoked sausage and cheese. The baked-in cheese is creamy and overflowing, and the portions of meat, any meat you choose, are MASSIVE! But beware, these biscuits are NOT for the faint of heart and there is nothing healthy about them. However, there is a whole lot of "good", and everyone should treat themselves once and a while. You get in line and drive around the building; a friendly gal will take your order in line at your car--rain, sleet, or shine--and you pay at the window when you get your biscuit, cash only. Looks like a used car lot, but OH what they hide INSIDE!!! Super-Huge Biscuits with Baked-in Cheddar "Hoop" Cheese. 8 different kinds of meats (maybe more). Enough to fill you up for the day!. Open Tuesdays thru Saturdays. They have a FEW seats inside but the bulk of their business is drive-thru. Don't be afraid of their low-tech Drive Thru service (a friendly worker comes around each vehicle with a notepad taking orders - no one needs a menu cuz of so much repeat business!!) It actually ends up being faster than McDonalds!!! You can also park behind the restaurant (they have overflow parking, 1 block away) and go inside the restuarant for a menu or a sit-down order. If you come inside, it is AMAZING how they can fit all of those women behind the counter. It is also fun to watch how well they work. They have their system down to a science!!
