So we were trying to go to a different place for lunch, but after they said it would be a 2 hour wait, we came here. We had already paid for a parking garage and at that point, I would of eaten anything. Coming here was certainly a unique experience. From the general layout to the food itself, everything is just a little different from the normal. You start out almost like a cafeteria line. You make your way to the left ordering your food, desserts, and drinks. Eventually you pay and begin battle to get a good seat. The seats are super hard to come by because this place is packed during lunch. Fortunately we were able to snag a seat when someone got up. We got our drinks and desserts first and then after a few more minutes we got our hot food. I ordered the pizza and my wife got the French toast with bacon. I wish I had gotten hers too. The pizza wasn't bad...it was actually pretty decent. The issue I had is that its premade and it was kind of burnt when they heated it up. (I was told it was premade when I tried to alter toppings). Her French Toast was super tasty and the bacon was perfect. The prices are pretty decent too. We ended up paying under 30 bucks for all the food and drinks. It was late morning and I had not had anything to eat yet. I was up pretty early to catch my flight into Boston so I was pretty hungry. I decided to treat myself for breakfast after arriving in Boston. Flour was pretty busy when I arrived. I ordered the breakfast sandwich and I couldn't resist getting a sticky bun as well. Wow. This was good and though more then I normally would spend on breakfast it was well worth it. The sandwich was an egg souffle with bacon, cheddar, arugula, tomato, and dijonaise on an artisan roll. The sandwich came together perfectly. The egg was nice and fluffy. The bacon was thick and plentiful and the cheese was melted just right. This sandwich made my mouth water. Then there is the sticky buns. These are quite large and full of deliciousness. It was served warm and that delicious sugary brown coating over top of the pecans was simply amazing. I had to come back here again to get another later in my trip. Needless to say I left here stuffed, but feeling satisfied. If you are in the area this is a must stop. My boyfriends sister went to both MIT and Harvard and was taking us to the MIT museum so we stopped here for lunch. The portions were very nice for the price (maybe I'm just used to NYC pricing) everything was fresh. I tried bfs egg sandwich and his liked his more than mine. I always get the same things when I come here. The roasted lamb sandwich is my go to. They give you a good amount of meat and the mildly sweet tomato chutney is really what makes the sandwich. My friend got the roast beef sandwich which she thought was good but go for the lamb sandwich if you come here. My favorite baked item is the hazelnut-almond dacquoise. I think this is better than their famous sticky bun. It's basically layers of chewy meringue, coffee buttercream and ganache with just the right amount of nutty goodness. It definitely tastes better than it looks. I would have this cake as my birthday cake. It is that good. Other things I've had are the raspberry seltzer, chai spice latte, milk chocolate hazelnut cookie and their version of the Oreo. The chai and Oreo were just okay. The seltzer is nice to have in the summer and the hazelnut cookie is good for any time. This place would be a good people watching spot if they didn't have the frosted windows. Stopped by on my way to MIT around 8:30/9 in the morning on a Saturday and the lines were pretty long. I ordered their weekend special of smoked salmon on multigrain toast with lemon caper cream cheese, red onion, and arugula as well as their pomegranate home made seltzer water. I've gone to this Flour location almost every Saturday for two years now, because it's so good, I've made it part of my Saturday routine. I'll usually grab my morning coffee here and a lemon ginger scone. But I've also tried their chocolate cream pie, carrot cake, sticky buns, housemade raspberry seltzer, vegan chocolate banana muffin and a lot of their seasonal menu items. Each time I try something different, I'm usually not disappointed. I recommend pretty much everything here. I've only disliked one thing I've gotten here and it was the chai latte-I didn't think it tasted like anything. I also love coming here on a weekend afternoon, and ordering a pot of tea, with something to eat. It's pretty hard to find a spot to eat in on a weekend morning, but sometimes you get lucky and find a spot. I've also ordered a triple chocolate mousse cake from here. Ordered the cake online through their website, but you can also go to a Flour location and order (in advance) in person. It's very dry, but the miso vinaigrette gives the salad some redeeming quality. - GREEN GODDESS: This is just a glorified greek-inspired Caesar salad with a bit more interesting of a dressing. Can you please open up in New Jersey, Jersey City to be exact. I would honestly eat here everyday if I could. So you walk in, look at the board and decide what you want to eat. They call out your name and try to grab a table. Simple and great. Don't be alarmed by the long line, it moves fast and tables are always opening up. Staff is absolutely great and attentive. Even if a customer is being difficult which I saw happen they still kept it calm cool and collective. The one place in the Boston area literally everyone said we must visit was Flour Bakery. And man, it was pretty awesome. We didn't get to try their sandwiches as we were on our way to lunch, but we did get some pastries. My favorites were the sticky bun (that's what they're known for) and the crème brûlée. The sticky bun was soft and moist, topped with pecans in caramel. It sounds overwhelmingly sweet, but the bun was light enough to buffer that candied syrup. And the crème brûlée! As I spent an entire summer perfecting my own recipe, know that I am VERY particular about my crème brûlées. So I can confidently say that Flour's crème brûlée is definitely one of THE BEST I've had. Served in small aluminum foil cups, the crème brûlée had the perfect ratio of egg yolks to cream. It was neither too eggy nor too sweet. And if you like a lightly caramelized finish on top like me (as opposed to a dark, burnt sugar crust), this crème brûlée is for you. The "okay" pastries were the (jelly) doughnut, which is only available on Sundays, and the almond brioche. Both were good but not life-changing like the aforementioned. Sadly, I was not a fan of the bread pudding. Although we did eat it quite a few hours after purchase, I doubt it would've changed my opinion. I have been a frequent flour customer since they opened, but wouldn't recommend this location. The quality is not up to the same standard as other locations (for example - brown lettuce in salads). Also - check your order - I walked 15 minutes over and when I returned to the office 1/3 of my order was missing. I emailed - no response, then called - they said oh sorry you didn't pick it up. I picked up the only bag in the shelf - didn't realize a large portion of my order was in a secret location. Office mates were very disappointed. The cold matcha latte was not great because they used syrup instead of actual matcha powder, and I was not a fan of that. This location of Flour Bakery was my 2nd visit to the Boston chain during my 4-day trip to the city. It's also the first time I finally tried the famed sticky bun that I'd read and heard so much about. This location also offers seating outside, which we took advantage of. My first taste of the oh-so-popular sticky bun was at this location. I shared it with two other people and immediately regretted it after taking my first bite. Absolutely delicious! Fortunately for my waistline, I moved from the Kendall Square area and won't be going there as often as I'd like. And that's a good thing because from the instant I walked in I knew I was going to like the place. I patiently waited in line and ordered my sandwich while admiring some of the wonderful pastries that lay upon me. It was very hard not to order anything else but I had to stick to the plan. A sandwich and a latte to go. I decided to go for the first sanwich that was listed on their beautiful chalked menu that's on one of their walls. The turkey sandwich with a cranberry chutney and Vermont cheddar. Simple and yet a wonderful, fall-themed combination. My mouth was watering. I asked for wholegrain bread and to have it grilled (which costs an extra $.75 - which is a bit ridiculous if you ask me...) I proceeded to stay in line, paid and waited for my name to be called while admiring the decor around me. It is very modern, sleek and very unique. I really like it a lot and although it was very crowded, I couldn't help but to notice how well orchestrated the staff is there. They seem pretty well organized and were handling the rush well. They had three staff members churning the sandwiches, their counter flooded with tickets and yet they seemed to move swiftly. So there I stood, amongst some nerdy MIT students, waiting for my sandwich. One of the pillars separating the first counter to the sandwich one featured a funny quote of the week, the weather and various bits of info. I found it to be funny and informative. More places should do that. As my name was called and I grabbed my sandwich, my coffee in the other hand, I proceeded to briskly walk out before ordering something that I'd regret. I think I just experienced the biological sensation of a heterosexual male who is memorized by the site of a luscious, curvy hottie. Just substitute the latter with Flour's sticky bun. On my way to pick up a zipcar, I just had to stop and grab this legendary bun I had heard so much about; well especially when the Food Network featured it! The top was was drenched with the brown sugar/cinnamon goo, sprinkled with a generous amount of pecans. That's the best part of the bun. The bottom, however, reminded me of an old croissant, a little dry and hard to cut. The texture wasn't that of a Cinnabon, nor the taste since the sticky bun was not overly sweetened and carried less of the cinnamon spice. it was one of a kind. Even though I love Central Square, I'm always faced with the conundrum with where to meet friends for a meal at a price point between McD's and Rendezvous. This is my favorite spot in Central for lunch...if we have enough time to wait in line! My order has never deviated from the roast beef sandwich. I know that I could get fried onions and put them in my own sandwiches, but the combination of hearty bread, crunchy onions, and not-too-heavy horseradish sauce is excellent. Plus the tomatoes are marinated so it's not like you suddenly find them in your sandwich when you wonder why it's so hard to chew. Note that if you get the famous breakfast sandwich, the egg is actually cooked into a square patty shape. Totes arbitrary but I don't do so hot with polygon eggs shapes, so I usually get something else for breakfast...for example, the sticky buns are a highlight, though I have made the mistake of eating them for breakfast and found myself bouncing off the walls of my cube (headsup: there are two sticky bun sizes, and the small one is pretty large anyways). I really like the apple snack bread, and any of their items with poppyseeds. Iced coffee is pretty solid, as is the raspberry seltzer. read more

Sitting on the edge of MIT, this Flour Bakery & Cafe unit is a magical mix of sticky buns, coffee and raw IQ from patrons who sport geek chic t-shirts to give a Mensa member pause. The decor is green-friendly coffee house hip. March came in like a very chilly lion and the packed line and the swirling smell of sumptuous steaming soups made the already welcoming atmosphere even nicer, even if you would need a fork to pry the packed humanity loose. Inside you will find a truly AMAZING bakery. Everything from the pastries to the bread for the sandwiches is not just fresh, but subtle in its tastes, simple in execution, and stylish in presentation. They serve not only breakfast items but sandwiches and really great fresh soups. A trip here for breakfast, lunch, or brunch will be rewarded. The service is call it out after you order, which could use a little better system. The coffee is good, but they have not found a bean worthy of their other culinary arts. It's rich but a bit bitter. Flour has a cook book or three. I highly recommend them if, you, like me, are in the hinterlands where the only "BAKERY" signs anymore are found at your local supermarket, and not much to talk about. I've always avoided Flour because the line in here gets pretty crazy in the mornings, but I finally took the initiative to come here for breakfast today. Really great selection of pastries and sandwiches - I got both the Kouign Amann and the famous Breakfast Egg Sandwich. The Breakfast Egg Sandwich was very satisfying - soft egg custard (think of Chinese steamed egg custards) with perfectly melted cheese and bacon, topped with fresh arugula and tomato and the best focaccia roll ever. The sandwich is well-portioned, and should leave you full for quite a while. The Kouign Amann was probably the best I've ever had, and probably one of the main reasons I would come back and give the other pastries a shot (I've tried the Sticky Bun in the past and wasn't a fan). I think it's even better than the DKA from Dominique Ansel's in New York. It doesn't have as much caramelized sugar as typical kouign amanns, which I prefer since it allows you to appreciate and enjoy the pastry itself even more. In my younger and more energetic days, I used to bike regularly from Harvard Square to Central Square to celebrate a successful week on this planet with a chocolate cupcake from Flour Bakery and Cafe. A treat so rich I had to eat it with a fork in order to dictate the correct cake to icing ratio, the cupcake became a weekly celebration and probably contributed no less than 5 pounds to my weight. Over time, I became adventurous and tried the sandwiches and other pastries: the Breakfast Egg Sandwich with Bacon is the epitome of a flavorful and filling morning meal, and the Chocolate Chip Cookie proves that even when stripped to the barest of ingredients, Joanne Chang does it better or at least as good as anyone else. The menu also clearly indicates nut-free, vegetarian, or gluten-free if that's your poison. At times, the bakery and cafe can become quite crowded, creating a huddle mass yearning to eat delicious cake. Emphasis on the huddled since seating fills up quickly. Nonetheless, the incredibly friendly and efficient staff does its best to get your meal and/or dessert out as quickly as possible. Lastly, Joanne Chang herself is quite an impressive public speaker, and her story about starting Flour Bakery is fairly inspirational. I won't ruin the middle for you, but it ends with her running an immensely successful bakery chain. The cookbook--also for sale at the bakery--has prompted a few amateur attempts in my kitchen, but I don't think I'm quite ready for the big leagues yet. Wow. What an amazing experience! Came to Boston to visit some friends this week and found out about this bakery via Yelp. In the span of 1.5 days, I came to Flour twice. The first time, I got the sticky bun as suggested and a hot chocolate. The sticky bun was magical. Get it warmed up and it'll taste even better. The pecans on top of the sticky bun added great texture and the caramel sauce was just so delicious. The hot chocolate was solid. Nothing special about it, but it did warm me up. The second time at Flour, I ordered the sticky buns (again) and a lamb sandwich. The lamb sandwich was definitely one of the best sandwiches I've ever had in my life. The lamb practically melted in my mouth, and the tomato chutney added the perfect sweetness to the sandwich. The only downside was that they could have added more lamb. Definitely get it though. Overall, I am so glad I came to Flour during my visit to Boston. Prices were very reasonable--the sticky bun was around $3.50 and the lamb sandwich (a pretty big portion) was around $8. Came here to try a sticky bun. Little known fact: I've never actually had a sticky bun before, nor have I ever had anything similar to one, like that Cinnabon stuff. All that sugary glaze on top just turns me off, especially when there's nuts! I'm always afraid the glaze is hardened or just nasty in some way. But I will say that I was wrong in assuming these things about Flour's sticky bun. I shared one with my boyfriend (only because it was right after lunch). The bun was freshly made and still warm. The bread part of the bun had just enough sugar and cinnamon, but not too cinnamony that it's overwhelming and in-your-face. The glaze is definitely sweet, but it was gooey and not the hardened glaze that I'm scared of. The pecans weren't bad either! For an infrequent sticky-bun-eater, I will say that Flour's sticky bun is something I recommend trying. I love this bakery! I'm not a big fan of sweets so the sticky bun was good, it was a bit much for me. However, I thought the cheddar and chive scone was one of the best scones I've had. On the sandwich front, their breakfast egg sandwich with bacon is pretty delicious. The texture of the egg is soft and custard like and while I dont normally like mustard, the dijonaise really added something. The lamb sandwich is also quite good - the lamb is very well cooked. The tomato chutney makes it a little sweet but the goat cheese helps balance it out. I tried the roasted chicken, and the flavors are less intense but it was still pretty good. The jicama gave it a nice crunch. It's probably best I dont live in Boston otherwise I would be be here a little too often! read more

I am a huge fan of pastry chef Joanne Chang, and Flour was the first place I insisted we hit after arriving early morning in Boston. The sticky buns had been haunting my dreams for a while, so we hunkered down and bought the Boston cream pie, a sticky bun, and a blackcurrant oat scone. The sticky bun was exactly how I dreamed (drooled) it would be. Sweet, sticky, in your fingers with just enough pecans in the chewy dough. Everyone ahead of us ordered one, and I heard most people behind us order one as well. As for the cream pie, I've always disliked Boston cream pies for some reason; I guess it's because I never had a good experience with them. But this Boston cream pie definitely has surpassed all my expectations, and it was the winner for my sweet-toothed companion. Everything was light and airy, and the chocolate ganache was drizzled generously on the top. Surprisingly, the oat scone was my favourite. I love dense breads, and it's no surprise that Flour bakery really nailed the texture and taste of that scone. Just a hint of sweetness, with a savoury undertone. I was also very pleasantly surprised by the service, which was as nice and chipper as they come, even in a ridiculous lineup. I suppose they're used to it. There is also a good mix of regulars and zealous first timers, like us. The only thing is that I wish I had bought a breakfast sandwich. Like I promised, I came here on Saturday AND Sunday. Saturday: Needed BFF time and dragged him out with promises of yummy sticky buns and delicious coffee. I got the egg breakfast sandwich ( I substitued the meat for an avocado spread) and he got a turkey sandwich. Both were delicious. I ordered a soy mocha (which on both days I ordered they informed me that its made with chocolate/mocha ganache and asked if I had any allergies). I appreciated that. I also ordered banana bread and a large sticky bun for later. Everything was so delicious. Sunday: Hungover from a night of bday festivities and crawled in for a curried tuna sandwich. It has golden raisins in it (love raisins, but hate when they're mixed in foods), but the cashier told me that I will barely be able to taste them. Boy was she right. The sandwich and iced mocha hot the spot. This may be my new weekend hangout. Love the outdoor seating. OWWWWW! read more

The food and beverages here are SUPERB! You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. I love their sandwiches, especially the BLT. All of their pastries are delicious. And their drinks are magical -- best hot chocolate and mocha I've ever had! Based on the quality of the food alone, I'd be inclined to give this place 5 stars. But it's such a circus when you're inside this place. There are people EVERYWHERE. The line is always so long (understandably so, this place is delicious) and it's so hard to find a place to sit. Even if you have a spot to sit, expect people to be hovering around you because they are either waiting for their order to be completed or they want your table once you're done. Recently, they even forgot to prepare my order because it got lost in the many other orders the servers had to complete. The hectic-ness makes this place too unpleasant to dine in (but during the summer, there is outdoor seating!). read more

Great joint for pastries and sandwiches alike! I actually came here two days in a row due to its proximity to my new apartment and had great experiences both times! The first time, I split a sticky bun and blackberry cupcake with a friend. The sticky bun definitely lived up to the hype! I loved the rich flavor, but it wasn't overly sweet, and the caramelized pecans were the perfect touch. Definitely would not be able to finish a whole one by myself - they are very filling! The blackberry cupcake was also good, but I wish the frosting had more of a rich blackberry flavor. I also tried the Cauliflower Melt the next day, which was very flavorful and filling as well (I only finished half the sandwich). Flour seems like it will definitely become a regular stop for me in the months to come! read more
