We went to get some food along the way to Providence, Rhode Island. The customer service is appreciative when asking what was the best pastries and cakes. We bought recommendations the famous sticky buns and iconic Boston cream pie. The warmed sticky buns were mouth melting and worth dying for! Came here to try a sticky bun. Little known fact: I've never actually had a sticky bun before, nor have I ever had anything similar to one, like that Cinnabon stuff. All that sugary glaze on top just turns me off, especially when there's nuts! I'm always afraid the glaze is hardened or just nasty in some way. But I will say that I was wrong in assuming these things about Flour's sticky bun. I shared one with my boyfriend (only because it was right after lunch). The bun was freshly made and still warm. The bread part of the bun had just enough sugar and cinnamon, but not too cinnamony that it's overwhelming and in-your-face. The glaze is definitely sweet, but it was gooey and not the hardened glaze that I'm scared of. The pecans weren't bad either! For an infrequent sticky-bun-eater, I will say that Flour's sticky bun is something I recommend trying. I have been here three times . the sticky bun with pecans is delicious. The sad thing is the ones that they advertise are not the ones they serve until they run out. you put in your order at the counter and these beautiful sticky bus loaded with pecans are saying "pick me, pick me" and then you get your order and it is practically naked with only a few pecans. Bad service can always ruin a dining experience and that's what makes me rate this location lower than how much I actually love their food. Some of the front cashier staff are so lacking in intelligence it astounds me. I ordered two sandwiches, a sticky bread pudding, a cookie, two coffees and a slice of carrot cake. For every single order, the guy asked me "And would you like that for here or to go?" What. Imagine that same question being asked for 7 items, seven times in a row. The guy was being nice, but that was to the point of being ridiculous. And he was so flustered that he forgot to bring out some of the dessert items we ordered. Also the whole point of writing "first name + last initial" is so you call them when the sandwiches are finished being made. The sandwich maker yells "Joseph? Sandwich for Joseph!" There were apparently two Joseph's there that day, so when I asked him to specify which Joseph he was referring to, he stared at me very blankly. The sandwich was for "Joseph M." Unfortunately for me. Other than that, the food is good. Sticky buns and sticky bread pudding are amazing. Sandwiches are decent for the most part. I am a huge fan of pastry chef Joanne Chang, and Flour was the first place I insisted we hit after arriving early morning in Boston. The sticky buns had been haunting my dreams for a while, so we hunkered down and bought the Boston cream pie, a sticky bun, and a blackcurrant oat scone. The sticky bun was exactly how I dreamed (drooled) it would be. Sweet, sticky, in your fingers with just enough pecans in the chewy dough. Everyone ahead of us ordered one, and I heard most people behind us order one as well. As for the cream pie, I've always disliked Boston cream pies for some reason; I guess it's because I never had a good experience with them. But this Boston cream pie definitely has surpassed all my expectations, and it was the winner for my sweet-toothed companion. Everything was light and airy, and the chocolate ganache was drizzled generously on the top. Surprisingly, the oat scone was my favourite. I love dense breads, and it's no surprise that Flour bakery really nailed the texture and taste of that scone. Just a hint of sweetness, with a savoury undertone. I was also very pleasantly surprised by the service, which was as nice and chipper as they come, even in a ridiculous lineup. I suppose they're used to it. There is also a good mix of regulars and zealous first timers, like us. The only thing is that I wish I had bought a breakfast sandwich. Like I promised, I came here on Saturday AND Sunday. Saturday: Needed BFF time and dragged him out with promises of yummy sticky buns and delicious coffee. I got the egg breakfast sandwich ( I substitued the meat for an avocado spread) and he got a turkey sandwich. Both were delicious. I ordered a soy mocha (which on both days I ordered they informed me that its made with chocolate/mocha ganache and asked if I had any allergies). I appreciated that. I also ordered banana bread and a large sticky bun for later. Everything was so delicious. Sunday: Hungover from a night of bday festivities and crawled in for a curried tuna sandwich. It has golden raisins in it (love raisins, but hate when they're mixed in foods), but the cashier told me that I will barely be able to taste them. Boy was she right. A little yuppy/hipster, but the food is excellent and the prices are quite reasonable. We stopped in for breakfast last weekend, and that was a very good decision. The creme-filled doughnut was outstanding; fresh, chewy, and with a nice light whipped-cream filling. This is what Dunkin Donuts used to be back in the day when they actually made them fresh each morning. We also had a breakfast sandwich, which was quite good as well. The consistency of the eggs was interesting; almost a baked custard, and while it was better than a normal scrambled egg, I would personally have preferred a fried egg for the little bit of crunch you get on the edges. When we got there the line was pretty long, but it moved quickly and we didn't wait too long for our food, and the service was friendly enough. I can't believe that after living in Cambridge for 5 years, I only tried the sticky buns this past weekend. It was so perfectly ooey, gooey, sweet, and delightful. The perfect treat for a lovely weekend. The only reason why I didn't give them 5 stars is because the portion for the sandwiches were a little disappointing, especially considering the price you're paying ($8.50 for just the sandwich). Out of the lamb, roast beef, and chicken sandwich with brie, the roast beef is probably the best bang for your buck. If you're really hungry, I don't suggest coming here to sequester your appetite, but definitely check out the bakery items (I suggest the creme brulee as well). You won't be disappointed! read more

Was it worth the $$&? Maybe. The roast beef sandwich was excellent although a little underfilled in terms of actual beef :( The ciabatta is dense but pairs excellently with the horseradish mayo, which has the perfect kick. The grilled cauliflower panini was okay. A little sweet imo. The cauliflower also made it kinda soggy and I don't think the oaxaca cheese paired well with it. For what it is, this is a terrific bakery, sandwich, salad place that I can warmly and enthusiastically recommend near the MIT campus. The menu is outrageously good. Had a chicken, guacamole jicama sandwich made as a salad. So good. Generous portion and extremely fresh. Lunch companion raved about his sandwich as well. But then the baked goods. Oh my goodness. Had the "oreo" cookie, which is two chocolate shortbreads with frosting in the middle. Just really rich and delicious. Bread pudding is also melt in your mouth good as well. couldn't decide between 3 and 4 stars, but i am willing to bump it up for great service. came to this location during weekday lunch hours, after being frustrated with the serious lack of parking at the wharf location - i guess Cambridge has met its match when it comes to car un-friendliness! got lucked out and found street parking quickly. there was a line with 5-6 people in front of me, but it moved rather swiftly. stupid me to pick this time to join the lunch crowd when i only wanted pastries, but service was quick and courteous despite them being slammed, which I appreciate. except that when i looked at my receipt, two of the 9 items i ordered were not accounted for, but they quickly corrected it by adding it on and ringing me up again. i mean, it was noisy and i might have spoken softly. it's cool. except that when i arrived at my destination, i found out the single item i ordered to be wrapped separately (that to take home, the rest to friend's house) was not even packed!! yeah it was just $2, but i wanted to get hub something nice and now it's not there! :( they redeemed themselves as i called them later on and reported my case to them. they found my order by the number on my receipt quickly, and offered to "refund" that charge without much hassle. it wasn't exactly a "refund" bc they said they don't really ring your card until the end of day, so they'd just deduct the amount from what was on that receipt. and i do appreciate that. kudos to them for resolving the issue quickly and professionally, and keeping a customer happy despite of and in midst of chaos! yeah, at $4-$5+ a pop on the pastries, it is kinda pricey. but if you're not in the mood to bake, that's the price you pay. read more

Flour is a really solid breakfast lunch place. The baked goods are to die for and their prepared food is always really good. Coffee is also solid. Here's what I have had over the years that I recommend- eggs in any form (quiche or breakfast sandwich) because they are fluffy and amazing. Brioche bread, banana bread, bacon, coffee. Stop next door at Central Bottle after you grab some baked goods or breakfast and you'll feel like you've gone to foodie heaven. Btw, I usually avoid coming here on weekend mornings. It's slammed. Visited on a Friday afternoon to try the famous sticky bun, but unfortunately they were sold out. I settled for the brownie and brown butter blondie instead and had very low expectations... but I was proven wrong. I microwaved the brownie at home for 20 seconds before serving and it was like a molten lava cake in brownie form. It was rich and gooey, but not overly sweet or chocolatey. The blondie was a pleasant surprise as well-- you could most definitely taste the nutty flavor of browned butter and had the texture of something between a cake and a thick skillet cookie. It was the morning I landed in, a red-eye from Los Angeles on two hours of sleep seated between a rather large couple, that I found myself at Flour Cafe. Full of energy and probably secretly wondering when I'd end up crashing, the time-zone change didn't help. Flour Cafe was the first destination for food, and perhaps my first travel eaterie in a while that I didn't depend on Yelp to at all steer my choices, wise indeed. It wasn't the overly crowded discretion upon my visit, a few people in line and my turn to order coming up to soon. Or perhaps I was simply engrossed in conversation too much to read the menu. Or I was too tired to comprehend elegant descriptions of food. In whatever case, my companion and guide ordered for me, to share, a quiche, knowing we'd very soon be ordering lunch two states away. Ah. We sat outside, myself then only to blame for this unfortunate lighting and shadow, but I didn't feel like moving enough to reprimand the sun. The quiche itself tasted good, a hearty breakfast, and flaking well. I don't tend to order quiches on the regular, so I did end wondering how other things would be on the menu, as I found this favorable. Upon checking Yelp later, I discovered there were two particular pastries that I should have gone ahead to sample: the sticky bun and butter breton. Small regrets are to be had with a willful lack of information, but for the time everything was in reason, and I have no regrets, small or not. Another day? -- Update: I came back a few times, and tried a few sandwiches as well as the sticky bun and the quinoa salad. In short, the sticky bun wasn't really all that extraordinary, though I think being from LA might have a big hand in that opinion. If I lived in Boston and this was my only opportunity for such a pastry, I might think differently. As for the sandwiches, they tasted good, and I probably enjoyed them more than they deserve, but enjoyed them nonetheless. I am a sucker for horseradish. I had the brilliant idea of biking to Flour to pick up lunch today, thereby avoiding marathon traffic at my local Back Bay spots. Little did I know I would end up waiting for an incredibly long time--10 minutes to order and another 15 to get my sandwich. I still really like the food, but I don't see myself coming back for lunch unless I have time to burn. I was also getting kind of claustrophobic when I scored a window seat but immediately had a sea of asses in my face from the people crowding around to wait for their food. Sandwiches continue to need salt (this time, it was the roast beef with horseradish). Bread remains amazing. Make sure to check out the specials board (on the column to the immediate right when you enter, between the cashier and the sandwich counter) before ordering--some of them look great. read more

It was a small thing-- innocuous looking next to all its boastful croissant and muffin cousins on the counter. Don't let this little forgotten savory pastry pass you by! It was more like a buttery pastry cloud topped with yummy toppings of goat cheese and peppers. The ingredients were so fresh and delicious. It was the perfect size and went wonderfully with our other sweet treats. I love the hand-written menus on the wall and changing daily specials too.
