Over the past year, I have visited Fluid a couple of times for cold brew, which I have always enjoyed for its high acidity that sets it apart from its more commercial competitors. Last week I came in to the cafe with the intention of ordering a pour-over, but was told they no longer make them here because it is "too time-consuming". First, no one was behind me to order. Second of all, the barista was still making specialty lattes which included three or more ingredients and took nearly as much time as a pour-over would have taken. Third, he directed us to the other Fluid location, which was not at the address listed on the website. The store is postured as a specialty coffee shop with a focus on the quality and sourcing of the coffee, but if pour-over isn't an option, then what is the point? read more

Do not go here before work if you're in a hurry! I want to support local businesses and absolutely love this place, but the service can sometimes be lacking. I'm giving a 3 due to the fact that there is often only one barista taking and making all of the orders in the morning. I often wait 10-15 minutes for a very basic drink like cold brew. I know they are a small business but 7-10am should be properly staffed since they are a popular coffee/breakfast place. read more

I absolutely adore the environment theyve created with their decor and furniture and art! Definitely a very cool place to go and get coffee, very instagram-able lol. The only problem i have is i dont think theres enough of a variety on the menu and i havent been too impressed with the mocha latte i got the last two times... its good but a little bitter for my taste i think, although im a sweet coffee lover so take that opinion with a grain of salt. The prices are actually surprisingly low for such a seemingly high end coffee shop, cheaper than starbucks! What a surprise! Fluid is a true coffee gem more typical of coffeehouses in major cities. I was happy to find it nestled in the middle of downtown Valparaiso. The co-owner, Chuck, was not only friendly and approachable, but his coffee IQ was off the charts. I actually learned about the coffee production process while he made drink recommendations to me (which were were spot on). Basics like a double cortado were made perfectly while a drink called "High Velocity" was crafted with artistry and sophistication. I've never tasted anything like it. To round out breakfast, I had a yogurt bowl with all sorts of tasty accoutrements. Patrons were coming and going all day--many of them locals and frequent customers as far as I could tell. The atmosphere is edgy to be sure, especially by Valpo standards, but softened with unique wooden and leather furnishings and interesting works of art. The proprietor was extremely welcoming and, based on my short chat with him, invested in the community. It's no surprise that the crowd was diverse, interesting, and friendly. Practically speaking, Wifi and power outlets are available, the prices are reasonable, the drink selection is excellent and unique, local items such as pastries are for sale, and parking can be found easily in lots or streets nearby. I recommend Fluid in the highest possible terms and commend the owners for dramatically enlivening downtown Valpo. read more

A great find. I don't know much of valpo, but this will make me explore this area more. Fluid has custom yogurt bar where you can add bunch of different options like raspberry jam honey maple syrup for graNola etc. it also has a custom sandwich bar and offers two different types of small kombucha . Just moved to the area and have been trying to find a good coffee shop. I do appreciate that make their own syrups but they have a very limited choices on flavors. The barista was very short even told they guy in front of me that he needed to grab him half and half off the self service bar since he was out behind the counter if he was going to make his drink. With coffee shops I just expected friendly and more upbeat service. read more

Just the other day, I was just speaking with my wife about wanting a bistro in the downtown area that served great coffee and food. I've been wanting a bistro a European feel that provides a place to gather around great coffee. I think the answer is Fluid! I didn't try their food today but it has a healthy/organic vibe to it, which I'm all for. Today it was just coffee so I ordered a pourover. They use Intellegentsia coffee beans for all their coffee drinks so they don't skimp on quality. The coffee menu is extensive so there are great choices there not only for black coffee but also for coffee drinks - lattes, etc. It was relaxing to sit outside and enjoy the downtown area on a warm spring afternoon. I love coffee and I really wanted to try this place. I came in on a Sunday evening at around 7:55 pm. We were looking at the pastries and the guy behind the bar basically didn't want to make new customers as we were told they are closed. I apologized and said we weren't aware, this is our first time here. He just said yeah we close at 8 on Sundays. So we just left. I just wish he would have handled it differently, he just seemed cold and callous and had no interest in getting a few new customers. We were just looking at the pastries, I'd understand if you didn't want to make a coffee because you were almost closed but you can't sell us a wrapped pastry? Visited once with a friend and loved the atmosphere and their drinks. Feels like something reminisce of The Alley in Chicago. The drinks took a little longer than we expected but they were worth the wait. I'm hoping to come back for an improve night that they have done in the past. Will definitely come back again. The food was okay and the drinks fine. However, I went there twice now to meet with others and couldn't hear because of the obnoxiously loud music. In both cases, the staff knew we were having meetings, and it seems like the hard rock just kept getting louder. I finally went home with a terrible headache the last time. Now this is a coffee BAR!! Forget Starbucks and DD this place rocks literally!! The selection is large and can be customized and this coffee is smooth but has the kick I need to get through the day. They also offer individual muffins and other baked goods that are very tasty. I've tried a number of their iced coffees and lattes and have never been disappointed.
