Watch Tower, a.k.a - The Honeymoon Suite! I'm in the window looking out
Katie F.

From the moment we stepped onto the property, we knew it was the place we were going to get married. Our wedding was a dream, and we have not only our amazing wedding coordinators to thank, but also the serenity and simple beauty of Flying Caballos. It was important to us that our families, having never met before, get to spend ample time together. We rented the main house, guest house, studio and Watch Tower for three nights (Fri-Sun), and we all stayed on the property together. This made not only preparing for the wedding and the flow of the day itself easy, but also, the day following the wedding we had a good bye BBQ and were able to invite people back to the property at their leisure to chow down and say their goodbyes. **Having the extra day at the ranch after the wedding was one of the best decisions we made. No rushing to pack up and get out of there after the long day before, plus, our families got to spend even more time together which was very special for everyone and resulted in some of our most favorite memories of the weekend. Table and chairs for up to 150 are now provided by the ranch. The chairs are nice with a natural wood look - tables are mostly round and fit perfectly in the space. - in fact, once we started the table set up, I was surprised at how much more space there was in the yard than I originally thought. We had a party of around 150, with 18 tables and we never felt packed. The groom and I had a perfect view of everyone at our wedding from our sweetheart table. There is a really cute double outhouse that is in the middle of the yard, so no need to rent a portable outhouse (unless you have over 150ppl). It was easy for catering and rentals to set up in the shed on the side of the property - you would never even know they were there on the day of the wedding. There is a 10PM amplified music cut off for San Luis Obispo County, but don't fret! The main house has a built in outdoor speaker system which is set to not go over a certain decibel, so once the official DJ/band stops, you can continue playing music to your hearts content. This was such a plus for us. The dance party never really stopped all weekend long. In all honesty, I probably could have not brought a single thing to decorate the space, as the attention to detail of the entire property is magical enough in and of itself. Every nook and cranny has so much character. The lawn furniture, the fire pit, the redwood water tower hot tub, the list goes on and on...people go gaga over this place. You're guests will inevitably be in awe of the property and the setting. They spent a lot of time and energy in the off season planting new heavy duty grass which held up really nicely with the summer's wear and tear. Our wedding was towards the end of "wedding season" and we were pleased with the grounds. No complaints there. TIPS: There is no AC in the guest house and main house - while the main house gets a nice breeze, in the guest house you may need to bring a oscillating fan or two to keep the air moving on hot summer nights. We set up a tent in the yard and the kids had a fun camping adventure. Brides - be aware that you're walking and frolicking in a place that is chock full of vintage and antique furniture. This means some of these pieces, especially the outdoor furniture, have some rusty and somewhat jagged edges. I tore my dress on one said piece of furniture and the groom snagged his suit pant leg on another. At that point we had already tied the knot so our priorities were elsewhere, but it was a bit of a bummer. You're going to use the fire pit and you're going to run out of wood. Make sure to bring some! Check with the property manager regarding the schedule for the sprinkler system. We were surprised on our last night there while sitting around the fire pit when the entire lawn sprinkler system turned on. It was a funny moment for sure, but could have been avoided... Last I heard there were plans in place to build a barn with kitchen facilities at the bottom of the hill. Imagine two choices for your venue, indoor or outdoor, and a built in back up plan if it rains. Amazing. Finally, price. The way we see it - sure, we laid down some cash for this place, but compared to some of the other venues in the area that charge just as much for ONE day vs. the THREE we got - it was a no brainer. It was worth every penny and a weekend we will remember forever.

The hot tub and fire pit were such a nice added bonus, and the guests loved making s'mores over the fire after dinner!

Service here was excellent, we were checked up on enough and our server gave great recommendations. Thanks to our server Talia D! We sat in a cute garden area with vines, plants, and fairy lights, very cozy like you're in a friend's well-decorated patio. They also gave us complementary bread before we received our meal, and a lot of the dishes were unique and plated well. I would come back if I'm ever in the area and would recommend this place to all my friends! salmon bisque // 9.25 // very yummy and unique. my bf didn't think he'd like it -- he usually dislikes seafood -- but it was great!! creamy, clear salmon taste but no unpleasant fishy/ocean taste that a lot of seafood has. i've never had this anywhere else, props to the chef! thai green curry // 8.5 // my bf says it's a 9. it's good but i feel like it was not my fave, it's lowkey your good, standard green curry that you can get at any thai place duck breast (curry) // 8.75 // very delicious and unique, i'd rate the curry, rice, and duck breast as 9/10, the duck breast itself was a 10/10. the curry was creamy, and they were all delicious and fragrant, pairing well together. however, the mushrooms, carrots, and other veggies it came with are too sweet. they seem like they're glazed with a sauce that has too much sugar. the black rice was surprisingly very filling strawberry matcha trifle // 8 // yummy, nothing majorly wrong with it. reminds me of a strawberry matcha latte. matcha whipped cream was a nice, unique touch i haven't really seen elsewhere despite it not sounding difficult to make. i'd order it again but i feel like it's on the sweeter side, so you can't eat too much of it.

Say yes to the menu!!! That's the first thing that came to my mind when I visited Novo in SLO. Once…read moreupon a time, I saw this restaurant be featured on the iconic Check Please, so needless to say the award winning food speaks for itself and I was ready for this experience. I came into Novo with high expectations and my expectations were exceeded. Calamari: Who doesn't want Calamari on the Central Coast, for me it's a must. But can we take a moment to complement the sauces they pair with the calamari. Novo's calamari is paired with a tartar sauce and a sweet chili sauce. Definitely a first experience for me and I was beyond impressed. My taste buds danced because, whoever, is out here making many and flavor pairings for Novo has unlocked a new game mode for me. If you ever are wondering what appetizer to try, this right here is my first recommendation. Blackberry Ginger Cooler: The mocktail was beautiful and also a great pairing. I would love to try their other drinks soon. Matcha Strawberry Trifle: My mom, sisters, and I agreed on this dessert and let me tell you, I'm so glad we did. The matcha trifle had so much goodness to it we spent time trying to guess what flavors were in its profile. Think a berry chantilly from Whole Foods, but with matcha flavor and so fresh! Immediately after finishing my little sister said I had to learn to make this specific dessert and needless to say I don't disagree. It was balanced in sweetness, very light, and a great summer dessert. King Salmon: 2 please! The king salmon comes with Tabbouleh and green beans. This dish was my mom's and she was very pleased. One part of food I enjoy is not just the eating and experience, it's the aspect of reminisce in the flavors, analysis of the cooking, and trying to gauge cooking technique. For this dish, the salmon was perfectly cooked and it is not what we expected in the best way possible. This dish had so many different flavor profiles and wait until you taste the added kick of wasabi. Can I get another round? Korean Short Ribs: When I first saw this on the menu I was struck with asking myself how this dish might taste. It was one of those dishes where I thought, I have had plenty of short rib, I have had kimchi, but I have never seen them on one plate. More than that, I was hesitant as I like kimchi but not my to go to choice, nonetheless, I was drawn to this dish so of course I ordered it. Wow! Was I glad I did. My sister had the same order and we agreed the kimchi had such a nice kick to it. The spare rib was also thinly sliced making this dish easy and yummy. Now don't let that kick of heat scare you, I encourage everyone to try this dish. The rice sort of acts as a contrasting agent to help tone down the flavor and you just have to try it all together. All that said, I think service was awesome, then again SLO is a beautiful heart in California. But seriously we had an awesome waiter who shared with me the history of the restaurant. The story is also on their menu, but Nova's little sister restaurant is Red Luna and the big sister restaurant is Robin's Restaurant in Cambria. So good to know because I can now see how all this deliciousness connects! Big fan of these places and it's great to know they are one family. I don't think I have a favorite sibling of the three, but here's to another 5 stars for the middle child.

Choosing to have our day here was hands-down the smartest decision we made. From the second we stepped into the venue for our first tour, everything just clicked. We live in Arizona but knew we wanted to get married on the Central Coast. During our tour, Lauren truly listened to what mattered to us and showed us exactly how those details would come to life on our wedding day. That meant everything. We weren't just potential clients touring a venue, we were fiancés getting ready to celebrate the rest of our lives together, and Lauren never lost sight of that. Once we signed on, our planner Lindsey walked us through every detail with so much confidence and warmth that planning from a state away actually felt easy. Something we didn't really think about during this whole process is just how much time you end up spending with your planner - leaning on them to help you through the day, asking them for advice. By the end of it all, Lindsey felt like an old friend and we knew we could trust her with our vision for the day. The Penny has a preferred vendor list that is absolutely epic, and it was SUPER helpful for people like us who weren't local. They were also completely open to working with any vendors we'd already chosen. We picked our bar and catering from their preferred list and came back out for tastings with each. Both experiences were incredible - I could write full reviews on each of them too!! We also chose to use a few other vendors from their list and we were so glad we did. Great venues attract great partners, and it showed every step of the way. The entire team at The Penny brings real passion to what they do, and you can feel it in every moment. Our guests couldn't stop talking about how seamless the day was and how stunning the space is. The Penny gave us the wedding we dreamed of and then some - we want to relive this day over and over and over. We cannot recommend The Penny enough!! Makayla and Spencer

Lauren, Lindsey and her team (big shout out to Shannon) are so talented and I would 10/10 recommend trusting them with your special day.
