Don't get me wrong- the sandwiches and salads are super tasty. Love the hot sandwiches, and the guys who work back there are friendly and fun. (2.5 stars all to the person who cut the meat) The roasted lamb leg was pretty good, tender and not smelly! The sides were okay (spinach and mushroom.) I was happy with the food even I originally did come for the Focaccia! May check it out next time. The person who cut the lamb was very nice (that's a reason why I said this.) So then I went to pay and the cashier asked if I could pay in cash in straight face. Not even a reason. I stared at the machine and wondered if it's broken. I realized this is starting to become a norm in Fidi that they asked that question. Well, to be nice I did. I then decided to also get a cappuccino. This is when it really bugged me. They served it as an espresso with just foam and no milk! The cashier (who also made my drink) was not nice at all as I saw her "pour" the espresso shot into the cup in a snap. I immediately realized from the weightless cup but did not think it was made incorrectly until I started drinking it. I should have gone and have my clover coffee or somewhere else for the caffeine drink. If you can handle the poor service and just stick to the food then you can come here. I heart Focaccia for their fresh salads and delicious sandwiches. I take away two stars because the mean lady behind the salad counter made me cry. All I was doing was standing there trying to decide what the next ingredients in my salad would be. Hmmmm...should it be kidney beans or corn? Or both? Broccoli or tomatoes? Cucumbers or carrots? Maybe all? Now, I can see how that can be annoying. But, I'm a super duper fast thinker. All that thinking was like 2 seconds. Seriously. There was a BEETLE the size of a cockroach hiding under my salad. When I took the salad back, the lady there said, "Oh yeah, it happens. We don't wash our mixed greens." I was like, "What?!?!" She goes on to tell me that they wash their romaine, but not their mixed greens. I would let it slide and wouldn't have posted a bad review (or the pictures of the beetle), except for the POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. The manager came out and said "What do you want me to do? It happens. I can give you your money back but there's nothing more I can do." I told him that I would feel better about coming back if they would start washing their lettuce. He told me that they have 3,000 customers a day and can't wash their lettuce. He also asked me who told me that they didn't wash their lettuce? I told him the lady standing right there told me. So then he gets on her case and yells at her "You don't wash the lettuce, but THEY do!" She just looked away. I frankly don't think he's telling the truth. But whatever, even if he is, I wouldn't go back. That's no way to treat a customer (or an employee for that matter). So, I give this place zero stars for its lack of hygiene, zero stars for its lack of customer service and zero stars for the way the manager treats his employees. Found myself on the grill side... lunch time was nutz to where the salad bar line was in direct collision with the sandYwiches line - I went next door (place is split in 2). Grill side was not crowded. :) SOUTHWEST BURGER Excellent. 8 bucks with some salad and side. The people here have an AMAZINGLY bad attitude. I swear that every time I have walked in they act like they are doing me a favor in preparing the food. The worst is the sandwich guy. Three times I walked in, he wasnt busy and waited two minutes fro him to ask what I wanted - he was too busy chatting - so I just walked out. The new renovation looks nice but charging $6.00 for an egg sandwich is ridiculous. Why dont you guys go to Manhattan and buy a egg sandiwch for 2.75 and see how its supposed to be done. Way better. Quick review of the Focaccia Salad Bar: I must say my salad was truly fantastic. Ingredients here are really fresh, reasonably priced, and everything tasted great. Really wasn't expecting anything special when I walked in, so seeing such a quality product makes me even happier. The deal isn't bad either: Three "toppings" are included in the price, and although initially skeptical about it, I found that ordering just a small salad actually ends up being quite enough food - even for a guy. One thing to be aware of though: adding meat or avocado (two of my favorites) is extra, and not included on the list of complimentary toppings. But still, a small salad with meat comes out not costing you an arm and a leg regardless. The line can become problematic at times, so NOT recommended if you are in a rush, as the salad line moves somewhat slower than your typical lunch assembly line station. The sandwich/hot food lines in the rear are slightly faster, but then again, they are also usually shorter. For those in a rush, Focaccia does offer a few grab and go pre-made sandwiches/salads in a display case in the middle of the store. As such an easy stop to make for lunch, it's a no-brainer that I'll be coming again. read more

Stopped in for a quick lunch today and was very happy with my pre-packaged wrap. Although there were a ton of people in line, the grab-and-go options were fantastic and allowed me to bypass the custom made lunch items. I had my wrap, cookie, and beverage selected and paid for in a matter of minutes. On to the taste test. The "Italian" wrap I chose received a much appreciated boost from roasted red peppers and pepperocinis. The veggies were crisp, and even though there was tomato, nothing was soggy. Props. Flavor was fine. It wasn't mind blowing, but for a quick lunch, I felt that it was perfectly fine. The only let down was the peanut butter cookie. Meh. Still, in the end, I'm rounding up to 4 stars and will keep this on my radar for when I'm in need of a quick lunch. read more

Quite possibly home to my favorite sandwich...ever. This is my go-to sandwich when I'm feeling like a for-sure satisfying lunch: Roasted chicken on focaccia, provolone cheese, portabello mushrooms, balsamic spread, (have them toast the sandwich at this point), lettuce greens, onions, and cucumbers for a nice, fresh crunch. All this for $7.75 (and sometimes $7 if they forget to mark that you got mushrooms)! You will love it - I promise! I've had the hot food before, but it's nothing special. I've heard the salads are quite good though! Tip: Show up at 11:45 or after 12:45 to avoid the lunchtime rush! Saves you a good 10-15 minutes. read more

First, let's clarify that Focaccia has two halves: the "Market & Bakery", which is basically a giant prepared-foods counter, and the much smaller "Focaccia Grill" next door, where you can get paninis and a stool at one of those tiny counters. I hit the Grill, partly because (for some inexplicable reason) it had no line whatsoever, even though the bakery was a madhouse and many of the other popular lunch places--eg, Oasis Grill--had lines out the door (yeesh, and I thought the other side of Market was crazy at lunchtime). So it gets a star for accessibility. My biggest complaint is the misleading menu. It sounds like it's a "build your own" panini thing, but you can actually only choose from the random selection of paninis they've already assembled (which is pretty lame--they have to add the veggies and cook it, but they're too busy to slap the meat and cheese and bread together first? Please). But they do know their bread, and they grill it in such a way that it comes out much softer than your typical panini. Now, the sammies are pretty hearty, but if you've got the appetite I strongly recommend a side of the mac & cheese--supremely filling on its own and among the most effective ways to mitigate work-induced stress with a food-induced coma of complacency. read more

The wheat foccacia bread was so good. so.... now to the bad stuff on this place. i originally was next door trying to order a salad in which you get to custom make them as well. it was around 3pm when i was trying to get my salad but they told me the salad bar was close. i guess.. it's their hours, no problem so i walked next door to the sandwich area and the lady behind the counter was surprised. she told me that they're not even suppose to close up until another half hour. I also noticed the worker on the salad side of this place seems to hate their job. Upon walking in, they did NOT greet me or even smiled or seem willing to help me. It was a dead face with... i hate my job, hurry up woman so i can get the eff out of here look. i guess it was a slow day for them. so i ended up only getting an oatmeal cookie from them, and a sandwich NEXT DOOR. the sandwich lady was SUPER nice. so overall... This is my new go-to spot for lunch! The lines are always so long, but it's definitely worth the wait. Since it's so centrally located in the Embarcadero area, this place is always filled with suits (suits: people who wear suits/professional attire to work). They have a salad bar - where you can custom order your salads and they will make them for you. I love their gourmet sandwiches and paninis. Obviously, they are famous for their focaccia, but I've tried their ciabatta and it's pretty darn delicious too! You get to choose your bread, meat, toppings, spreads... made just the way you like it. I've seen several people order the roast pork, and it looks scrumptious! They carve it right in front of you, so it's fresh.. not deli-style. It's a decent size sandwich too.. I just ate half and saved the rest for later. Off to the right of the sandwich stand is the hot food stand. Gotta love tender rotisserie chicken! They also have several other options, but I didn't look any further since I was craving chicken all day long :) They also have a great selection of pastries, breads, and the like. If you are in a hurry, there's always pre-made sandwiches, fruit cups, etc. Overall, I'm pretty happy with this place. Can I even begin to tell you how much better my life would be if there were Focaccias all over the city? II love their salad dressings like no other. I think that is why they are so good, I can't quite figure it out. I order arugala, carmaliezed pears, walnuts, and bacon when I get here topped with balsamic. I only end up paying $4.95, $4.50 when I cut out the bacon. And you know what, that's a good deal. There salads are SOOOOOOOOOO much better than Mixt Greens it isn't funny. Then, on top of that you get a free delicious slab of bread that I always end up eating as I'm walking on the way back to work (Ok, I'm not that classy, don't let my photos fool you). So as I was saying? Why in gods name can't there be more of these places? I would be SO happy if I could find a salad bar like theirs in the mission. I would be there often. Wouldn't mind the free bread either. One note though, the service here is certainly less than perfect. The salad ladies and cashiers are often miserable. A pre-emptive apology for the excessive use of ( )( )( )( )'s with way too many thoughts in them. Imagine the Soup place from Seinfeld, but on a much larger scale. This place can be intimidating for newcomers. There are multiple lines all over the place, tons of people, and tons of employees taking orders. You don't know where to go, you're not sure what line you need to get into (one for hot food, one for sandwiches, one for salads, one for paying...). But don't let the fact that the hot food guy will get annoyed with you if you aren't ready or don't know the system scare you away (you can order ala carte meat like filet of fish, half chicken, etc. or you can get it with two sides, I recommend good ole fashioned Macaroni and Cheese, the grilled asparagus is also an excellent choice $7.95 I believe). The food is good and very consistent. And although always packed, this place runs like a well oiled nude bay to breaker runner. It is much like that credit card commercial though, where if you get someone in front of you that doesn't know the system, the whole thing comes to a grinding halt and you find yourself wanting to "help" them along. 4 stars given because I haven't tried everything yet and because the "hot" food isn't always very hot and may take a quick minute in the nuker and due to the fact that it's only take away, no table. read more

Oh Focaccia, how I love thee so. I'm addicted to this place, even though the line is always so ridiculously long. They have the best salad bar - just go on up, pick your variety of lettuces (YES, I said variety), and choose from any of their 15 - 20 toppings of the day. I always get something with the candied almonds - they're delightful. They also have hot food, that actually looks fresh. Grilled veggies and rotisserie chicken. MMMMMM! I haven't gotten a chance to try it yet, but everyone else I've talked to seems to love it. The lines can be a little hectic (it's more like a mob) and it's a little intimidating your first time (but your first time is always intimidating), but it's worth it in my opinion. One of my first full days working out of our SF office and my co-worker decided to show me one of their favorite lunch spots. Try soup nazi experience x 4 and that's what you get during peak lunch hour at this little store located right across the street from Ann Taylor in the Embarcadero plaza. There is a separate line for hot plate, salad, sandwich, and cash register. And during peak times did I tell you the lines all criss-cross each other and or go in circles? The group at the head of each line have their own particular ways about how things should operate so make sure you come along with an "experienced" customer or during off-hours where you can learn the ropes too, because the staff and others can frown you right out of the store if you dally too long. But the food is absolutely delicious, fresh baked breads, so many baskets of crisp salad greens to choose from, tender chicken meat roasted on-site, you could build something similar at Whole Foods but it still won't compare to this. For around $7 a sandwich and $6 for a full salad you can eat like a king and feel healthy about it too. This place makes me want to find more excuses to work in the city... hmm... read more

The service at this place has declined over the past few years, it seems. First of all-- are the employees here trained not to smile? It's like pulling tooth for them to give you a nice gesture when you order food. I've seen people react better in the show "To catch a predator" than these employees after having asked them to put more of your precious 3 toppings in. Yes--- you only get 3 toppings here. At Pluto's, you'll get 6 or 7 (please quote me that you should not quote this). At least the salad is not too expensive-- ~$7 for a large salad. Free bread (and free to stare down people who are bagging up a dozen pieces as if bread is going out of style). We ate lunch here today and it was DELICIOUS! I had one of the single serving, prepared salads of mixed greens and spicy shrimp, avocado and sesame dressing. It was $5 and it was GREAT. I also bought another, large salad of romaine and the same ingredients as lunch, but added bleu cheese chunks, for our dinner tonight. It fed three just right. That salad was $9 and it was GREAT! This is my FiDi lunch joint ~2-3 times/week. Generally speaking, everything's good. I've rarely been disappointed. The salads are a bargain, if you order correctly and keep it within X number of permitted ingredients. Order a SMALL, unless you're a greens machine. The portions are generous; and you can help yourself to fresh focaccia slices on the way out the door. Lots of variety in toppings and high-quality, fresh ingredients. Consistently good, despite the lengthy lines and occasional frozen lettuce (or mystery vegetable leftover from someone else's order, if I order my salad mixed. Apparently they don't always clear out their mixing bowls between orders...) The prepared foods/daily entree specials are typically equally delicious, but often not at the right temperature. You might have to go right at 10/11am to get it hot... many a times I've received these items lukewarm. Their mac & cheese (not sure if it's a daily offering or special) is bombshell, but have a microwave handy, because it might be cold. If it's your first time, know that there are several different lines: one for salads, one for sandwiches and one for prepared foods/entrees. Grab your selection; then hop over to the cashier's line, which will move quickly. A reliable spot with good variety. Cashiers are speedy, but not particularly friendly. Fine by me. I grabbed a ready made Chicken Tostada Salad, 2 cookies and a piece of focaccia bread. I would rate the cashier a -10. Yes, I said it. A NEGATIVE TEN. She looked so unhappy, didn't greet me at all, and as I put my money away in my wallet, she called the next customer over and told me to "take (my) stuff off the counter". WTF is that? Rude. The tortilla strips in the salad were soggy. The romaine lettuce was wilted and brown at the tips. My focaccia bread was dry and tasteless. My boyfriend complained that the cookies "didn't taste like cookies". I'm sorry, but this place is just plain bad. read more

This review is for the excellent salad station. Nowhere else in the expensive radius around my office can I get a large salad (and it really is large) with 4 toppings (can include lovely proteins like quinoa, all kinds of beans, or tofu - but meats are extra) for under 10 dollars!!! Quality is always great, the stations are clean and organized, so you don't have to worry about allergens or things you don't eat or don't like getting into the mix by accident. I no longer work in the Fi Di, but I would like to commemorate this as my favorite lunch place from when I worked there last year. And yes, damnit, there will be lines between 12:00 and 1:30! Don't act so shocked! Everyone walks in there every day like it's some big surprise that the great lunch places get flooded at lunch time. You know there's going to be a line! It moves quickly! Just get in line and shut up! And yes there is a separate line to pay! You'll survive! I love the staff here, and I think the key to getting good service is to know what you want by the time you get to the front. If there is a line of thirty people backed up behind, do not dither for four minutes about whether or not you want marinated or un-marinated mushrooms in your salad! The staff will really appreciate it. Honest. My favorite salad: Mixed greens with marinated mushrooms, kidney beans, chick peas, egg whites, and avocado if I'm feeling decadent. I'm pretty convinced that the sesame soy dressing is less greasy than the vinaigrette, and the message sometimes gets lost in the hubbub when you ask for light dressing. Hey, it's a busy place, I think that's fair enough. My favorite, wish-I-could-still-eat-it every-day sandwich: Marinated chicken and eggplant on a toasted whole wheat roll with pesto and vinaigrette spreads, with fresh basil and red onions. Good lord I love that sandwich! Having the really fresh basil and high quality eggplant is the kind of thing that makes this place great! I miss you, focaccia! Just to let you know I don't have burgers everyday.It is just that I am a little lazy when it comes to updating reviews. So,I had the opportunity to try the burger here and I must say it was made the way I like it ( well done) and tasted good.You have several choices of bread selections.I decide on a nice baked wheat bun.The burger was topped with cheese and the ingredients:tomato,onion and lettuce were to the side in the box next to the burger.All looked fresh and delicious. The burger overall was not large,not overwhelming,but a decent size.Heck,who am I kidding I prefer the overwhelming and unusual burgers.So,basically the patty was just the right size and didn't over lap my bun. The fries were thin,kind of crispy and ok tasting.I do like thicker fries if i had a choice. I love how I can select what type of lettuce, romaine, spinach base and toppings for my salad. Service = TERRIBLE, Food = when it's good it's really good. Apparently there is a hot food nazi behind the counter. I came in during lunch and was trying to take a pic of the menu since they don't have an online menu for sandwiches (catering only). The guy that handles the hot food starts screaming at me "WHAT THE F*** DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING??? NO PICTURES!" I was like umm ok sorry? If you just told me nicely no pics that would be fine instead of screaming at me like I stole something. To save grace the guy who does the sandwiches gave me a apologetic look and took my order and apologized. This guy is great and always very nice and friendly. The rest of the staff seem to always be in a bad mood as well. I've returned a few times since then and it's pretty much the same for service. Their sandwiches are pretty good with fresh ingredients. The chicken when it's prepared right (mostly 80% of the time) is fantastic but can be dry on occasion. Yes, a 2...and that is kind. The food = amazing. The people = horrid. I work right by this place so it is convenient and when my company gets food catered from here it is delicious. But if you try to pick something up there for lunch, the financial district crowd is overwhelming and the line is out the door. Because of this, their noses are in the air when it comes to customer service. My reasoning: Me: "I'd like to order a salad, please." Confused Lady: "We open at 11am!" Me: "It's ten after." Stupid Lady: " We're not open yet." Me: "Then why does it say 'open' and the doors are propped open and everyone is just standing around?" Sheena J. and I have weekly lunch dates at Focaccia, so yummy and it can be as healthy as you want it to be, of course I always ask for extra dressing, so there goes my "healthy" lunch.... The ladies are very friendly. Wayyyy too busy between 12 and 1, so we always go after 1 so the wait is about 2 to 3 minutes, sometimes none. read more

After many many weeks of searching for that go to place, I finally stumbled upon it today. Arrived here at around 1 today, and the lines were still quite long for the city that eats at noon. Upon entering there's a salad bar to your left, which is probably wonderful, but since I'm carnivorous, I headed straight to the back where all the real food was, and found myself very pleased. The meat selection looked amazing. Everything was thick, fresh, and very..for lack of a better word..yummy looking. From the hearty roast beef, the carved turkey, rich corned beef, Pumba would've been very satisfied. You get a selection between a plate with a couple sides, or a sandwich. I had promised my coworker I'd get him a sandwich, so I ordered up two roast beef-ers. Aside then from the huge slabs he put on, the absolute best part of a focaccia sandwich is indeed the bread. It is thin, toasty, and compliments the meat and veggies very well. The sandwich maker was also quite energetic, and added to the experience. For $6, it was just right size, filed me up for the rest of the working day--though I easily could've finished another one right then and there. I stopped in last week, and put off by the long line at the sandwich station, decided to get a salad. That's $8 down the drain if you ask me. 1 star. Yesterday though, my coworker and I went in again after he wouldn't shut up their mac n' cheese and I have found what makes this place stay in business: the hot bar. My chicken breast was super tasty. The macaroni isn't amazing, but it is good, and the vegetables are nicely roasted as well. The guy at the hot food counter was very friendly and although the cashier wasn't nice to me, she was extremely nice to the woman in line behind me as they bonded over their pregnancies. (Next time I'll remember to wear my fake baby bump...) Focaccia: consider yourself partially redeemed. read more

For both sides of Focaccia (the Cafe and the Grill): Five Stars. Delicioso. Minus one star for the Grill, though, because it's just gross to put hot dishes in the same box as your salad. It makes all the leaves wilt from the warm meat/bread/yummy goodness. And then the salad turns slimy and gross by the time you open the box that is filled with condensation. But otherwise, a very good place to go for lunch! read more

Went in today for the first time.. They have ready made sandwiches & salads if you're in a rush. Very clean and open area. Separate lines for salads, sandwiches, and hot foods. There was a bit of a long line everywhere, as can be expected at noon in FiDi... Took me about 10 minutes from start to finish. Today I ordered wheat focaccia with pastrami & provolone toasted. It was a pretty large portion, could eat 1/2 now and 1/2 later. Saw a lady ahead of me order smoked salmon with caper mayo.. I want to try that next time. read more

Update 2/12/07: Rotiss. chicken was better, moister but still a little dry! Focaccia was better, still a little dry. Sauteed squash side, not that flavorful, but w/ S&P it was fine. Service & cashier guys today were not my fav's. But sometimes you just want meat 'n' veggies! ACK.... That's the sound you make when you cough up dry chicken. The rotisserie chicken here was dry -- salty and dry. One would think that since it's chicken cooked w/ bone and skin in tact, the moisture would maintain its integrity. But no. The sides I tried, spinach and the long grain rice, were lifeless and flavorless. The focaccia also screamed "Day Old!" Notwithstanding, it's a decent lunch time option to have a rotisserie place in the FiDi. read more
