No joke, the best corn beef in SF (well at least in the Financial District). I come here a couple of times a month with my coworkers and we pretty much get the same thing everything. Sandwich Station - My two favorites are Roasted Chicken (delicious) and Corn beef on the ciabatta baguette with melted brie cheese. Seriously skip their boring focaccia and step up to the ciabatta baguette. It is soft and chewy with a great crust. I always get brie because no other sandwich shop has it. I always think, holy crap they have brie, and I must have it. Rotisserie Section - They have good tasting meat and a decent selection of sides. But there is not much bang for your buck here since the meat portion is a little on the skimpy side. Salad bar - Never had it and probably never will read more

I recently discovered Focaccia after being rudely turned away by Birley's Sandwiches when I requested a made to order prosciutto sandwich. They insisted I just eat there premade sandwich which had things I was allergic to and couldn't eat...however they couldn't seem to comprehend that and kept giving me the stink eye. Lo and behold I found Focaccia and not only do they do made to order prosciutto and mozzarella sandwiches they are by far the most savory and well done sandwiches I have had in a long time. The kind man making my sandwich recommended a pesto mayo/aioli to go with my sandwich which was quite a perfect combination. I topped it all off with a sparkling orangina. Usually there are 2 long lines (one for salad and the other for sandwich/hot stuff) that snake around the place. It's always difficult to tell who's in which line and such, but I guess that's a good sign that it's busy busy busy. Salads are decent, filling, and cheap. Well under $10. Nothing special. When I think of Focaccia Cafe & Bakery, these immortal words uttered by Slater, my favorite stoner (well...second favorite...after the hot and shirtless Pickford) in the movie 'Dazed and Confused', come to mind. I do not understand what the fuss or the long lines are about. Yeah, for $6.50 (inc. tax), I got a big piece of chicken with mashed potatoes and zucchini, and a piece of bread. But, when the above-mentioned food is cold, bland, undercooked, and swimming in oil that dripped all over the carry-out bag, do you really want a lot of it? The timing was no excuse either. Against my better judgement I went during the start of the lunch rush (hey, my hunger knows no timetable), so it is not like the food was cold because it was late in the afternoon. My first experience at Foccacia was pretty stressful. First off, I went there with my coworkers right at the peak of lunch hour, so long lines galore. Next off, being my first time there, I didn't know which line went to what as there seemed to be three, one for salads, one for sandwiches, and the other one for paying. It was a mess! So I lined up in the salad line, ordered my custom caprese salad and embarrassingly went to the cashier, cutting a whole crapload of people waiting to pay. Yeah, I'm a rookie, gimmie a break!! The salad was pretty good, though at $7, it didn't really satisfy me. I'll have to come back here again some other time when it's not so busy so I can maybe get a better experience. In my opinion, if you are at the same address but have different names and are separated by a wall, you are two restaurants. Such is the case with Focaccia Cafe and Focaccia Grill. Been to both for some really good sandwiches, and in fact, think my review for the Cafe with the whole wheat focaccia was actually for here. Regardless of which location it came from, it was an awesome sandwich. Returned today for breakfast, and totally enjoyed my parfait, featuring some delicious peach yogurt. So yeah, I go to this place _at least_ once a week, sometimes twice. It's right near my office and their pre-packaged salads are pretty darn good (I usually get the Garden with Chicken or the Cobb salad). The deli is awesome and they'll even toast your sandwich. I get the Roast beef on toasted wheat with mozzarella, lettuce, tomato, mayo, and balsalmic vinegar. It's the shizzy! Only reason I docked this place down a star was that the staff isn't really all that friendly. Best. Eggplant. Sandwich. EVER! The ingredients: Wheat bread Eggplant Goat cheese Roasted red pepper (....Heat....) Lettuce Tomato ....maybe avocado if I'm feeling gluttonous. Order a small salad in a large container. They end up giving you a little extra ingredients and you still have room to give the greens a little toss. AND it's still cheaper than Mix't Greens! Absolutely terrible customer service. The employees there have talked to and treated me with such an attitude that I will not go back to their business. When you ask employees questions they have an awful attitude and poorly communicate. I have experienced this with multiple employees. My go-to salad place for lunch. I have tried their salad bar and sandwich bar, and I seriously love everything here. I usually get their small salads for $5.75 which comes with 3 toppings. It is so worth it because the small is definitely big enough to fill me up. If the salad doesn't fill you up, they offer free slice of their delicious focaccia bread (comes in white or wheat)!! This place has decent food but the service is the worst I've seen anywhere in San Francisco or anywhere else for that matter. The people that put together the sandwiches are extremely rude and they make you feel like you should be asking for forgiveness every time you distract them from their important lives. I've been to this place several times as I work right next to it and I always want to give them another chance but I have decided I'd rather go anywhere else than dealing with these guys. Just so you all can understand what I mean, let me share my experience today. I went there a little past 1PM and I was the only one in line for a sandwich. I stood in front of two employees for about 10 seconds until I said "excuse me, I want to get a sandwich", they looked at me and one said "I'll be right back" never to return and the other one said "I"m busy" and started arranging the banana peppers! I waited another 30 seconds or so (honestly, mostly because I was confused) until he said, there's nothing left. Looking at all the options in front of me, I asked if I could get something from the counter and he replied "I thought you'd be gone by now but given that you are not, what do you want" in a very rude way. He gave me a sandwich and left. Anyone else after me wasn't as lucky... This place should get new employees or close but don't go there unless you think it's fun to revive a Seinfeld episode. read more

It's ok. Pre-packed salads in the fridge area are ok but sometimes I have to pick through a few packages as the greens look... well, not so green. Also quite pricey. Made-to-order salads are just ok, they're a little stingy on the toppings/additions. Also weird that they just smash the hard boiled eggs with their hands rather than chop them. Sandwiches from the back area are good. Lines are confusing and the overall vibe is chaotic. Today, I went to their grill next door and had the crab salad sandwich. Not good. Flavor is kinda bland and monotone. Chose the mac n cheese for my side - not good either. Also bland, cheese looked like it curdled and separated. I've become ridiculously addicted to their pre-packaged Greek salad. On the one hand, I am tempted to say: what could be so great about a salad...I mean, it's a salad, after all. It's not like it's bacon (and no, the Greek salad does not have bacon bits on top). But it's a great combination of the greens, chickpeas, olives, artichoke, feta cheese, onions with a nice balsamic dressing for $6.45. And there is something wonderful about chickpeas in a salad. Plus the guy at the cash register is always very nice. I keep on meaning to get a sandwich but can't resist the salad. Which is weird given all the great sandwich options they have. I kept on looking for this place on Yelp to review, but I couldn't spell "Focaccia" right! Dag nab it, the sandwiches here hits the spot when the spot is hankering for some hittin'. I had the pastrami last time, toasted with melted mozzarella and everything else in it, on focaccia bread, of course. The texture of the bread is so comforting. When I bite into my sandwich with its leafy, iron-enriched greens, balsamic spread, and a nice, big pickle down the middle, I feel so much joy and satisfaction. The sandwich is toasted with the meat and cheese, and the outcome is crunchy goodness followed by soft, meat-filled awesome. If only it were a bit cheaper I'd eat here more often, but it's a treat for my hard working days. I don't care to try anything else cause I don't need to. Just give me my sammich! read more

Ciabatta bread, roasted chicken, Swiss cheese, lettuce, pickles and pesto/mayo/mustard - toasted! THE BEST SANDWICH IN THE WORLD. This place is always packed but they do an awesome job of getting you in and out quickly. The hot foods look delicious, but I love the sandwich bar. I am a huge fan of the sammich. They also have a whole wall of pre packaged salads if you are in a super huge hurry. The salad bar line is always the longest, but that's ok with me, less people in the sandwhich line :) ! There was virtually no wait for me when I went here today for lunch. I guess I beat the rush. Anyways, I ordered the Portabella dish out of curiosity with a side of mash potatoes and gravy. It was about 9 dollars for one gigantic portabella mushroom...and an excess of mash potatoes--too expensive for what it is in my opinion. I should have just stuck to my usual banh mi at Les Croissants around the corner on Drumm. I feel kind of gross now, sitting in my cubicle knowing I just ate that to be honest. First, the food here is EXCELLENT... all fresh, and well-cooked. The -2 stars is due to the fact that their service is horrible. The servers are VERY RUDE and MEAN. I feel intimidated most by the man that carves entrees and makes sandwiches in the back area. I told him I wanted whole wheat bread, and before I could even finish talking, he irritably said "ok what kind of sandwich, you gotta tell me what kind"... but even when I did tell him all the way what kind of sandwich with what spreads, he didn't remember it! This place would have merited four stars if the service hadn't been so lackluster. I walked in to grab the half chicken at 11am and was curtly told that "its not ready." Fine. No reason to be short. Love it! Whenever I want a hearty fresh meal, I come here. I bypass all of the other counters and head straight for the back, where the chicken and all the other good homestyle stuff is. The guy behind the counter is great--very stern and doesn't talk much, so we call him the lunch-nazi. He's not unfriendly but doesn't want you wasting any time up at his counter because the line gets quite long. Yesterday, I had the meatloaf (to die for) with basmati rice and grilled veggies (zucchini and broccoli) for $7.95. I originally wanted mac 'n cheese or mashed potatoes, but they had sold out right before I got there. The rice was actually very good and flavorful (you could taste some serious butter) and the veggies are always good. Sometimes I get the asparagus and it's good as well. They also have a good selection of baked treats at the counter for your sweet tooth. Also a variety of non-ordinary drinks. I have never been disappointed here, except for yesterday when they ran out of mac 'n cheese. Get there early! read more

Update! So I've been back twice and finally managed to procure chicken for my salad. Awesomeness. I decided to go with the spring mix, feta, olives, cucumber, chicken, red peppers with balsamic on croutons. Very delicious! I understand why everyone likes it so much now. Just don't go here for the customer service. The guy who runs the rotisserie chicken deal is pretty sweet, but other than that their staff tends to shout to the next person in line behind you even when you aren't halfway done with what you're saying. Hence the reason they don't get that fifth star. NOTE: YOU NEED TO GET THERE EARLY. By 1pm, everything good is cleaned out. So take your salad back to the office or walk to the park and savor it later. SECOND NOTE: READ THE FINE PRINT FOR SALADS. My boss learned this the hard way. Each additional topping after 3 toppings is 75cents. Meat is more. Croutons and dressing are no charge. It adds up quick. My salad above in a size small was only 6.95 because I'm good like that! I finally trekked here today for lunch (I'm closer to Chinatown than I am to the Embarcadero....), and oh boy do I regret not coming earlier. When I walked up along Sacramento, I noticed that there were two storefronts -- the Focaccia Grill and the Focaccia Market & Bakery. I think that hot sandwiches are approximately 23909403x better than cold sandwiches, so I headed into the Focaccia Grill, where there wasn't too much of a line. They have a number of daily special sandwiches (including sliders!), but I oped to build my own sandwich. They offer a fantastic range of meat, like teriyaki chicken, lemon herb chicken, chicken cutlets, sausages, etc., etc., as well as lots of bread & cheese options. I ordered the lemon herb chicken on white focaccia with provolone. It took a few minutes to get my sandwich. Although there weren't too many people in the store, each sandwich is made to order so it takes a little bit. I also noticed that the cafe was a bit understaffed. I had gone shopping before getting food, so my lunch hour was nearing its end and I took my sandwich back to the office. When I opened my sandwich, I was pleased to see that high quality greens, tomatoes, pickles, and onions were on the side for me to add as I wished. However, I was sad that my sandwich's bottom got incredibly soggy during its 15 minute journey. But when I bit into it, I was happy despite having to hold the sandwich in a napkin. The chicken tasted wonderfully grilled and lemon-y and herb-y, and of course I enjoyed the focaccia. Sandwich was $5.95, which I thought was a pretty decent deal. You can add a side to make it a combo; I wanted to, but I thought I should restrain myself I briefly checked out the Focaccia Market & Bakery and noticed that they have a pretty good number of salad bar options and other things that I'd like to check out one day. This place is great! They have a grill side on the left and a salad side on the right. The left side does everything from sandwiches, to grilled salmon, to curry chicken with homemade mashed potatoes. Pretty decent prices with very good sizes. The salads come pre-made for a quick exit, but also have a salad bar where they make your salads to order. I love the pre-made pear salad that comes with spinach, cranberries, goat cheese, almonds, and pears with a raspberry vinaigrette dressing--amazing. It's so big it lasts me two lunches which makes the price even that much better! (About $8). The salads come with focaccia bread - white or wheat, but as they're pre-bagged a little ways away from the checkout line, it can be easy to miss. Overall, it's a very clean, and healthy place to grab a lunch whether you're looking for something light, or something a little more hearty. read more

A newly added place to my regular work lunch rotation! REVIEW IS FOR SALADS ONLY. The base small salad is starts at $5.75 which includes 3 toppings (a variety of veggies and cheese). It's a decent size and keeps me full enough. If you add meat or fish, it's an extra $3-4. If you get a large, it's $7.75. Fresh, fast, cheap and does the job. Don't be scared if there's a line - it moves pretty fast and at least gives you more time to decide :) I'm still trying to figure out what my favorite combination is. I always get the lime vinaigrette though! I like how you can customize it to your liking but wish they had more ingredients or at least put a full list on the board since I see some stuff in front that is not included on the list (such as sunflower seeds, cranberries, quinoa!) Although it's customizable, be wary that they are heavy on the dressing. If you want LIGHT or MEDIUM dressing be ready to specify VERY clearly. Also, be sure to emphasize what you want loudly. Everytime I say 'peas,' the lady thinks I'm saying beets. I need to say 'green peas.' Last time I asked for brocolli and peas and she gave me walnuts and beets. Derrpp. It's ok, still love 'em. Although Mixt Greens is, in my opinion, still a bit tastier and has a wider array of ingredients, you can't beat out the price here. Grab bread and butta on your way out! I took a walk around the Embarcadero Center area and I noted that Focaccia had the craziest lines. Knowing that crowded places are probably crowded for a reason, I walked into the madness to see what they offered. On one occasion, I tried the hot prepared foods and the meats and sides were generally tasty, but they were luke warm and some of the veggies seemed dried out. However, their sandwiches are the highlight. All their ingredients are fresh and custom prepared. The focaccia bread is excellent here, especially if you have your sandwich toasted. The pay lines are ridculously long at times, however they move quickly. I generally pay cash since they have a seperate cash only line, which has shorter or no lines. They have no seats in the restaurant, but it's a short walk to Justin Herman Plaza or the Embarcadero Center. There is no better way to spend a lunch hour in the financial district than to grab a tasty sandwich and enjoying it outside on a sunny San Francisco day. read more

I've been going to this place regularly for the past few months. Their sandwiches are absolutely fantastic -- I always have the same portobello mushrooms, roasted red pepper, chevre, pesto and lettuce and tomatos. Yum. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. A little too expensive for my tastes though. Their salads are so-so and they usually run out of the exact ingredient you want (what salad place doesn't have extras in the back??) -so I'm going to dock them a star for that. The place is always packed and slightly choatic. Make sure you get into the right line. Its eyes were staring up at me. It had wings. I verified with my co-worker, "Please tell me this is an artichoke." Um, nope. At least when I went back in the cashier returned my money. After she offered me another salad (which I, wait for it, declined). Two bugs in two years and I can't go back. So, I don't work in the Fi-Di, and the last time I came to this place it was still Burger Factory (which was so good and cheap- $6 for cheeseburger, fries, and soda- I would trek over from 4th and Howard via Muni to meet my Fi Di friends for lunch). The place is still run by the same people and use the same tasty bread from next door, but the format is different. Its slightly more expensive than it used to be, but its such a good value and the portions are HUGE! I got a sirlion burger with blue cheese on ciabatta that was probably about five inches in diameter and one inch thick. It was $5.95. I also ordered a side of Macaroni and Cheese for $2.75. The burger was enormous and well seasoned, and the fixins were so fresh and tasty- the pickles were especially delicious. When I opened my box I thought they had given me a side salad because they gave me so many greens to garnish with. My mac and cheese "side" was about one pound of delicious penne in bechemel sauce baked with a generous smothering of melted cheddar on top that made me want to cry it was so delicious. It had a bit of a spicy kick to it as well, avoiding the blandness that so many Mac and Cheeses are weakened by. I was shocked at how huge the portion was- that box would have cost me about $9.00 at Whole Foods in my lunch 'hood. Total price= $9.44, total number of incedibly satisfying meals I got out of it= 2. Foccacia = Mama's cooking. Without hesitation I recommend Focaccia for the best homecooked food. Without them I would starve during lunchtiime. Yes, they make the best warmed sandwiches, and their deli case is stocked with handmade chicken and tuna salad as well as yummy non-fat parfaits. Their warm counter is the bomb tho' the creme de la creme of comfort food, there resides the short ribs, brazenly cooked in an exotic sauce, the pork is spicy and tender, the mashed potatoes are whipped with creamy butter AND Marscapone, the zucchini is crisp, and delish, the fish is tender and sauteed to perfection, and the chicken is delictable! Without Focaccia I would surely starve. I eat here at least three times a week, well...because it is really just around the corner from my work, but truly the food is absolutely freakin' delicious. This joint is the perfect replacement for mom's cooking (mom was a gourmet cook!). When I need the calories, the comfort and the smiles, I come to Focaccia. The only complaint I would say is that the lines are long and labyrinthine. At the lunchtime crunch no one knows what freakin' line they are in. Make sure you get there at 11:30 or you will be bitchin and moaning at the long queue. Be sure to remember, the coffee sucks. but everything else is absolutely exquisite! Brava! read more

Great variety at the salad bar - a small salad is all I can eat, very generous portions. The hot food specials change daily and there is a good variety. Homestyle healty food such as roasted chicken, stews, salmon, pork and lots of sides like grilled vegetables, mashed potatos, rice and heavenly mac and cheese....mmmm. . Sometimes I have a really hard time deciding what to eat there. Right next door to Focaccia is Focaccia grill. Food: 4 stars Service: 2 stars Prices: 2 stars This place would actually make a better martini bar than lunch place. Focaccia's (at least at lunch time) is filled with stereotypical Financial District inhabitants - young, attractive professional women in skirts and heels, up-and-coming well groomed men with sharp jaw lines and blazers on over their well pressed button downs. Really. The place is small and as other reviewers have said - there are lines snaking all over. Everyone is checking out everyone else. If they served drinks I think it could easily be the next big hook up bar. Now add to the strange professional/sexual tension 4 long, fast-moving lines, 3 hurried checkout people, one constantly pissed off sandwich guy (you know who you are), and lots of good food (salads, sandwiches, hot meats). The food is great. I have had a taste of just about everything they offer and have not been disappointed. However, be prepared to bring your financial district paycheck with you - the food is pricey, even for SF. Sadly the service here sucks. How hard is it to screw up food customer service? I live in the Mission where I don't even speak the same language as the people serving me and they still do a better job than Focaccia. The service here is hurried and worse - rude all too often. Even my job doesn't stress me out as much as a visit to this place. The food and convenience bring me back from time to time, but this is not at the top of my lunch spots in the financial district. read more

Oh, Focaccia. You and I go way back. So far back, in fact, that the first time I ate one of your sandwiches, I didn't even live in SF yet and I found myself back in Chicago craving your tomato, basil and mozzarella sandwich. Simply divine. When I finally moved here 8 years ago, you were part of my weekly lunch rotation. The staff was friendly, the sandwiches were heavenly, the prices were reasonable. Even when I switched jobs and had to walk about 15 minutes to enjoy your yummy goodness, it was a walk I was willing to take: just the thought of your focaccia bread completely drowned in your delicious balsamic vinaigrette was enough to make my heart race and my mouth water. Now? You have fancy new digs, but chaos reigns where 4 different lines (salad, hot dishes, sandwich, payment) get tangled into one undifferentiated mass of humanity. Your food is still good -- when you get the order right. Why do you insist on putting roasted red peppers on a sandwich when I never asked for them in the first place? My favorite sandwich makers are now gone, replaced by people who are, at best, indifferent. What the hell is a chicken bone doing in what is supposed to be a vegetarian sandwich? Finally, would it kill you to say "Thank you" when I pay? read more
