This is a wonderful little inn to stay at. It's along a strip of cute old hotels right across from the beach. The grounds are very quiet which is nice because you can hear the ocean. It seems to be dog friendly too as I noticed some cute doggies around. The room was remodeled with new appliances (mini fridge, microwave, tv, lamps with USB ports). The staff was very welcoming and accommodating. This hotel also has a heated pool and they serve a great complimentary breakfast. If you're lucky enough to grab a table outside, it's quite a view. I will definitely be back. Loved this place. read more

This is one of the most beautiful hotels on moonstone beach. Literally a one minute walk to the ocean!! Our room was extremely clean and the staff were amazing. They are taking great safety measures and all staff are wearing masks. We stayed for our anniversary and will be coming back for sure!! 1000% recommended :) read more

Weekend get away. Great location across from a smaller beach. Cute place to stay. The room was cozy and bed was comfortable. Unfortunately my experience with the staff and lack of customer service makes me not want to return to this inn. Keep in mind they don't provide basic housekeeping once you've arrived, we had to take out our own garbage. The front desk staff seemed bothered with answering simple questions and it wasn't a welcoming feeling which is what I would expect for the price and location. Wish I didn't have to interact with the front desk staff and then our stay would have been perfect. read more

This establishment can't even be bothered to offer the basic service of sending a reservation confirmation email. 45 minutes after I reserved online and had checked all mailboxes I waited a long time on hold to the reservation phone to ask for a confirmation email. They said no--it may take 24 hours to confirm, they can put in a request but not guarantee. Nearly 24 hours later I'm fed up and call to cancel and amazingly, the reservation specialist IS capable of sending me an email in less then a minute. When I ask to talk to the manager to explain my experience, I have to hold for the front desk where they tell me of course no manager is available. Not worth your time. read more

It is barely worth 2 stars, it is a run down hotel, that has seen better years ago, everything looked like the 90s were the last remodel. Reminds me of a old Motel 6. They NEED TO REMOVE THE BREAKFAST , as it is not being done! Many hotels of the same style are delivering continental breakfast to rooms. So, you have to run out quick to stand in line at a local restaurant. I will definitely not stay here again. read more

My wife and I Stayed here years ago back when God was a boy and I paid for most things in cash, when it was privately owned. It's now a corporately owned property so it's lost some charm in that respect. Nice location and the rooms are clean. Pool. They Allow pets as long as you sign your life away in a release form. The bureaucratic ritualism of the employees behind the counter has pretty much determined that we wont stay here any more. We come to Cambria and San Simeon often we generally stay up the road a bit. The Fog Catcher and their clean rooms and nice breakfast will have plenty of room for you. It's just not for us anymore. read more

So after looking feverishly for an end-of-vacation relaxing place to stay, this one led the way! And it was an excellent choice, if I do say so myself! Check in was super easy and the room was very pleasant and homey. Being just across the street from the beach provided very calming sounds as a late evening walk had to be completed before bed. The bed was very comfortable and the room with fireplace was easy to manage the temperature. Breakfast in the morning was excellent with great choices and delicious coffee! Thanks Fog Catcher! Best stay on our way down highway 1. Rooms are spacious, with high ceilings and overall clean feel. Oh, and fireplaces are a nice touch. The place is located across the street from ocean, and then there's also both a swimming pool and a hot tub with bubble streams. Breakfast is included and was I would say kinda average. There was eggs and sausages and cereal and all that stuff, but none of it was very exciting. Except for the waffles. That's right. They have a waffle maker. I guess you could say that waffles won over that fifth star (because breakfast wasn't quite as great as all the rest). I kinda missed a good restaurant nearby; there is one, but it was kinda meh (see separate review). I'd recommend eating on the way or driving a bit for something better. But you should still stay here: Rooms are great and the entire stay is great value. read more

This place is just across the street from Moonstone Beach, which gave us a beautiful sunset every night, as we sat around the fire pit that was turned on by the staff at dusk. We were welcomed by freshly baked cookies, fruit-infused water, coffee, hot chocolate, and tea by the front desk. We helped ourselves to the hot drinks at night, too, as our daughter did a Little night swimming. The rooms were clean and spacious and were kept warm by a fireplace. The hot breakfast menu included make-your-own waffles, oatmeal, scrambled eggs, sausage, potatoes that were super crunch on all sides and soft and creamy inside, and fresh salsa that was better than many Mexican restaurant salsa. They had cereal, muffins, and bananas and apples. The breakfast area was clean and well maintained. Next time, we will book the family suite. read more

Nice spot. Love the chocolate chip cookies at check in. The hotel breakfast looked suspect. You know the swiveling waffle maker...anyways it was awesome. Maybe the best buffet breakfast I have ever had without being at a bnb. I am not one to ever complain about my cell phone not working but I was extending my vacation a bit and needed to work for an hour. The Fogcatcher is one of several hotels on moonstone drive. When visiting Hearst castle this area is the only place to stay to soak up the central coast atmosphere. It's only 10 mins south of the castle and 15 mins from the elephant seals. The inn is located right across from the beach which is perfect for walking along the wood boardwalk. It's located only a couple of properties away from the moonstone bar and grill which is a must restaurant to eat at. (It closes at 9pm!) The rooms are nicely renovated and have a lot of charm with the fireplaces in each room. The front desk staff is great with Lots of info about the town and area. They are available around the clock. They offer fresh cookies and coffee at your leisure and sell local wine. The continental breakfast which is included with the price of the room is excellent. Waffles, eggs , sausage, excellent coffee, and more is available daily from 7-11 am. If you have kids this is a must. They have a pool and hot tub which is slightly worn but great for the family. There is also a fire pit by the pool. Make reservations early. They offer discounts for this and the rooms fill fast. The inn is pricey during the end of July/August but comparable to the rest of the inns on the same street. Also, Don't forget to reserve your tickets at Hearst before you go. It's chilly at night on the beach so pack a coat, even in August. read more

Poor value in lodging, in my opinion. Our room is in dire need of a complete refresh. Furnishings are equivalent to Goodwill finds; nothing matches and everything is in very poor condition. The floor carpet tiles are cheap and stained and UGLY. Chair seats stained. Dismal decorating. For the price, I expect at least a clean, pretty room. The only positive? A decent mattress. Love the little town of Cambria, not in love with Fog Catcher Inn. Was swayed by the 1st review listed on Yelp. Won't make that mistake again. read more

We stayed here one night, since it was close to Hearst Castle which we planned to tour. The outside is deceptive. Great renovation, with fireplaces that heat the rooms, fine amenities in the room and a great location. Across from the beach, with a nice walkway that leads to town. Adequate breakfast. read more

We stayed in room 107 (next to ice machine and maintenance) the first night and was woken at 7am by staff folding laundry and moving stuff around against exterior wall, causing the wall and bed to shake. The staff in office was so gracious to move us to room 805 (ADA room). Room was nice and clean. Kids enjoyed the pool and we enjoy walking to dinner at Moonstone beach bar and grill. Breakfast in the am at hotel was nice as well. read more

This place is cute and charming. Great location. Great room with a fireplace and nice bathroom. You can walk down the street to a restaurant. My husband and I sat outside around their fire pit at night and enjoyed that very much. The only thing missing was a coffee maker. I enjoyed this one night stay and look forward to going back and staying longer to explore. The front desk staff were very personable. Definitely recommend. read more

Wow, what a change for the worse. Our room smells like mold, and since there is a bright light right outside our front door, we can't sleep with the blind up to air it out. No longer is there breakfast at the inn or even a way to order from our room for delivery. Nope -- now you've got to contact the corporation's restaurant up the beach yourself. They couch not attending to the room in environmental terms. Sure, no making the bed or offering new towels is sadly normal these days, and I'd in many ways rather not have plastic bottled water, but how about offering filtered water somewhere to fill up our own water bottles? It's all so sad. The roofs are covered in tarps (though the storms were many months ago!) and the place feels neglected. Perhaps this would all be forgivable for a much lower price, but at $200/night as a discounted rate, no. This was once our favorite getaway. Time to find a new moonstone beach hotel. :( read more

I stayed here over the weekend and had the best time! I had the week off from work so I planned a solo road trip. I found this hotel on Instagram and fell in love with the pictures.. a hotel steps away from the beach?? I was sold! Check in was super easy and quick. The front desk staff was friendly AND they give you cookies. It was my first time visiting Cambria, so I asked about restaurants and things to do. The staff was very helpful and knowledgeable. The rooms and the whole property was very clean. Having a fireplace in the room was just that special touch for added comfort. They have a heated pool, and jacuzzi. At night they light up the fire pit so you can relax with a good book. I will definitely be back, but next time I will bring the fam so they can enjoy this little piece of heaven! read more

Actually staying here as I type this and we've had nothing but good experiences so far. Pros: Beds are very comfy and lots of pillows. Shutters block out all light. You have no idea what time day it is. Showers have good pressure and the heads are high (I'm 6,2"), so that's awesome. Breakfast is pretty darn good for a continental. Eggs and potatoes are cooked very well and they have amazing salsa. May try out the waffle maker this morning. Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf coffee too! Across the street from the beach and all you come to Cambria for. Cons: Ummm...tortillas for my eggs and salsa would be nice. First world problems. read more

Too bad I'm not coming back to this hotel. I've come to Cambria for the past 26 years...for the past 23 years I've enjoyed vacation rentals and airbnb. I thought this year I'll try going back to a hotel. Now I know why I switched. Breakfast was good (though the eggs and sausage were not warm to code)...beds were comfortable...and plenty of floor space in the double queen room. My reason for not coming back is due to the questionable billing process and customer service style. I watched charges on my account go on and off even though I had not given authorization for most of them. There were two extra $100+ charges for what? When I called, no explanation was given nor apology for these charges...the original two charges had been reversed but I found another $150+ charge today. Really? Being aware of your account transactions is a good practice. Staying away from businesses that run their card transactions like this is even better. I didn't mention yet that there was mold and mildew on the shade in the bathroom. Compared to charging whatever was the fee du jour, I had to choose which battle to fight. I only wish I had taken a photo of the mold. read more

When we arrived the room was dusty and dirty. There was actually hair on the pillows in the bed and bathtub. It was all disgusting. I went to the registration office and and showed the girl dirty rags that we used to illustrate our point. I also told her about the hair in the bed. She was unapologetic and it appeared that this was the norm. Again, I requested someone clean the room. My wife and I left for the day. When we returned 12 hours later, the room wasn't touched. read more

First let me say, the staff is lovely. They are very accommodating and attentive. It was my birthday, and they gave me a complimentary bottle of wine, which was very good. The four stars are because the hotel is in need of an update. We had the only oceanfront balcony room, and it left a little to be desired. The floor grout in the bathroom is dirty and stained as well as the bathroom door. The toilet paper and Kleenex that they use are substandard quality, and the room smelled like mildew. After I stepped out of the shower and went into the carpeted sleeping area, sand stuck to my feet because the carpet was not vacuumed. They do have a nice continental breakfast and are within walking distance to the Moonstone Grill, which is delicious. read more

We had such a wonderful stay at the FogCatcher Inn. Had it not been for a tight schedule, we would have extended our stay FOR SURE! Terry at the front desk could not have been more friendly, joyful and accommodating! The room was beautiful, stylish, clean and the views breathtaking- just steps from the beach. Extra lovely was hopping into the pool and hot tub after playing in the ocean! Lots of restaurants in walking distance made it a very convenient location. We LOVED staying on location for breakfast though- so many good options no matter your dietary preferences! Anytime we find ourselves near Cambria we will be back at FogCatcher for sure! read more

Stayed here many times but I was so surprised at how run down things were. The room was bare and basic which was a far cry from what it used to be. A previous guests plastic fork was on the carpet and hair was on one of the pillows on the bed. The bathroom was not clean. I was so disappointed. I mentioned that the room was not clean to the receptionist and she shrugged it off telling me she would let housekeeping know. Sadly I will not be returning again. Disheartening. read more

I don't even know where to begin with this property. Such a disappointment and so frustrating to have this hotel be the first place I visited after a year and a half of no vacation under pandemic lock-down. Easily the worst hotel I've ever stayed in during my entire career as a travel writer. First they checked us into a room with one king bed, when we had specifically requested (months ahead of time) a room with two queen beds to accommodate myself, my son, and my elderly mother. In the room they moved us to, which had two queen beds, the desk lamp was completely broken, did not turn on. And the lampshade, totally broken also. It fell off onto the floor the minute you touched it, it was just balanced on top of the lamp. The phone in our room, also broken. Anytime we wanted to communicate with the front desk we had to walk there instead of simply calling them with any questions. The only source of heat in the rooms is the fireplace. There is no heater. Only half the jets in the hotel's hot tub work. There were no towels available in the pool area and the door handle on the gate to get out of the pool area, also broken. The entire place is in need of a facelift and coat of paint. I feel like I was completely and totally ripped off for the $300 plus I paid to stay here. I would never stay here again. The only redeeming quality is that the hotel is directly across the street from the beach. So it's convenient. It's got that going for it. read more

HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE, actually, zero customer service and the lady working the front desk is rude! First our reservations where screwed up. Second I was over charged. Third, they can't even respond to an email when I questioned being overcharged. The rooms are ok, no room service and only one roll of toilet paper. It's really too bad because the location is great but I'd recommend booking reservation at one of the other 15 hotels on this road. read more

Stayed 2 nights here. Lobby staff were very friendly send helpful. Room was an ocean view king and bed was super comfy, but room decor and amenities were so-so. For the price bathroom should have a Jacuzzi tub. View of ocean was awesome! They had bottled water on table in room, figured it was complimentary, then saw sticker on top say $3. For price of room the bottled water should be comp in my opinion, or just build that into price ahead of time, so it appears comp would be better. Location was great, with one good restaurant very close and downtown only a few minutes drive. Would definitely recommend! read more

Dirty grout and tub in bathroom, stains on rug...yuck! Cute room, though. We really struggled with a few of the front desk staff both when calling to book our room and billing being totally incorrect when we were there. The woman who checked us in was completely clueless (maybe new or not familiar with the reservation system?). The assistant manager thankfully corrected everything after check-in. We've stayed at the FogCatcher many times over the past 30 years, but this past visit was disappointing. The grounds, buildings and rooms are run-down. Our room appeared not to have been vacuumed upon arrival. The breakfast Room has been closed. No regular maid service unless requested, overall a far cry from the hotels glory days. This summer when we return again we will be staying elsewhere. read more
