The location is good. The room was spacious. My main complaint is that you have to request that your room be cleaned the prior day. We were not informed of this when we checked in. Therefore, we didn't know this and so our room was not cleaned the next day. One of the fun things about staying at a hotel or inn is that your room is cleaned. We were bummed about that. The beds were not made, the bathroom was not tidied and the garbage was overflowing. Anyways, DON'T FORGET TO ASK THAT YOUR ROOM BE CLEANED OR IT WON'T BE. read more

We had a great stay at the Fogcatcher Inn. The location is superb. At night, we could hear the gentle sound of waves in the background. It was very calming indeed. The room was roomy (see what I there) enough and had a really nice view and cozy fireplace. That said, the heating was primarily done by the fireplace which went from a little heat to way too hot in a few minutes. The heat from it did not do a good job of traveling to where you most need it: the bed and the bathroom. Especially the bathroom with its cold stone tiles was not so much fun in the winter. Beds were comfy and clean. The bathroom could have been cleaned a tad more thorough. Nothing gross but some stray hairs that were there upon arrival. All in all we never felt like it was unsafe during Covid times. Protocols were followed and consequently our rooms were not cleaned throughout our stay (only before/after). One other small area for improvement would be to have more cups in the room. There was one paper cup for 3 days, for 3 guests. They had a coffee machine which you could basically not use unless you recycled the same paper cup also for brushing your teeth (eww no ty). read more

We stayed in Cambria an extra day and found a good deal on this place. From the photos and location it seemed pretty decent and I was excited to try it out. Location was good as expected and the room was a good size but it was pretty run down. Multiple stains on the carpet, the vanity light flickered every 2 seconds and there were spider webs all over. Walls are thin and the doors stick so you hear slamming constantly. Additionally, this place does not have AC and the windows are super janky. A shame because it has so much potential but for the price there are definitely better options, some even next door. read more

So disappointed with our recent stay. We were here many years ago and really enjoyed our visit but things have gone downhill. My husband called making our reservations and specifically asked for a room with a patio. We were assured we would get one. Unfortunately, when we arrived, we didn't get one - there are only 2 rooms with patio and they were booked. Ok, we resigned ourselves to this. We were assigned room 101, which does face the ocean. However when you look out the bedroom window, all you see are sand bags (?) and a ladder on the ground. All the tabletop surfaces had dust on them, along with the bedroom heating vent. We received a text before our arrival asking if we wanted daily housekeeping and we responded that we did. They confirmed we would get daily service. When we checked in we again verified we would get daily service. The staff said they only did housekeeping every 3 days. We told them we had requested daily and she noted it. The room did get serviced. When we left for day the 2nd day, we made sure to stop by the front desk letting them know they could clean. We returned around 4 pm and the room wasn't cleaned. Front desk says the only note they had was to clean yesterday. Housekeeping had already left so we had to lug back fresh towels, more coffee, empty trash. I know we sound picky but we encountered another guest and she said she was a frequent guest here and service has gone down. Said her room didn't look vacuumed- found a used bandage on the floor. The living room couch needs to be replaced - the seat cushions are flat and uncomfortable. On the plus side, the bed was fine and the fireplace works well. read more

A very lovely and relaxing night's sleep. The bed was softer than other hotels, which was perfect for me! We had the room with the balcony access, and just gazing out into the endless darkness over the ocean at night was mesmerizing. We kept the windows open all night and listened to the waves crashing on the shore. The room did have a fireplace, but we were snoodled up pretty well and didn't need to turn it on. The mini-fridge kept all of our snacks nice and cold. Check-in and out was a breeze. read more

Very bad service! I will never use this hotel again! The bathtub was backing up and there was no maintenance around . They transferred us to another room way back . The manager promised to adjust the rate due to the inconvenience only to find out later when I called him that they don't do as they promised. Don't stay at this hotel !! The Fog Catcher Inn is a quaint and pleasant place to stay and sports an optimal location on the strip opposite Moonstone Beach. With the exception of some service issues and missing items, I would not hesitate to return for a future stay. We stayed three nights as part of a trip with friends to the Cambria area. Our room was large yet homey, with a fireplace that worked well to warm it on foggy nights, a big closet, a clean bathroom and even a mini fridge and a microwave. All that considered, I look for two signs of a great hotel room: good (hot) water pressure and a comfortable bed. The Fog Catcher had both. There were a couple setbacks. They had a nice hot tub which we understandably needed to reserve during COVID. That was fine except for our second night when it wasn't working and the woman at the desk sort of shrugged and said there was nothing she could do about it, despite it being an issue that had been reported far ahead of our time in it. Another problem was no ironing board in the room. This grew from a minor inconvenience to a headache when it took a good 30 minutes for them to deliver one. I felt sympathetic for the woman who did so (the same woman we complained to about the hot tub) because she said she was the only one working. There was a man the next day who said that was also the case, so perhaps they have some bigger staffing issues to figure out. Whatever the case, the views of the beach just footsteps away across the road are breathtaking and include a long winding path where you can stroll toward San Simeon or deeper into town. Room was ok in general. Had issues with the antiquated wood window blinds. They were hard to figure out with pulling the operating cords to open and close. Fog Catcher needs an upgrade on the blinds, possibly change to shutters. The hotel room provided 2 bottles of water on a table that had a price tag of $5. Overpriced. Bring your own bottled water. Our first time here and we were impressed with the size of the room and ease of experience during our stay. The property is situated across from beautiful moonstone beach which we enjoyed daily. The fireplace in the room is a nice touch. We enjoyed the fire pit on the property that overlooks the ocean. The front desk attendee was helpful in turning it on for us. The front desk was great about local recommendations and even provided a cab number (no Ubers up here and no local cab companies). We didn't use the pool but it looked nice. We just checked in and this place is not what they portray online. Rooms are old, linens wrinkled, stains on carpet, holes in chairs. She we decided to cut our stay short, by one day they told us we would be held to the total of three days regardless. We expressed our concerns and basically were told oh well. Staff never smiles not even when you check in. All down Moonstone Drive every other Inn is bustling and busy and clean looking then you come upon this one. You think they would make an effort to keep up with their neighboring hotels. NEVER AGAIN and do not recommend this place what so ever. The hotel is in desperate need of refurbishment, new carpeting and a good cleaning to all windows and window screens as well as to all bath surfaces and floors with perhaps many bottles of cleaner or bleach to kill mold and mildew. The amenities in the room provided are a bare minimum: 1 set of towels for 2 people, 1 small bar of soap, coffee maker, 1 coffee and 1 coffee paper cup. The night we arrived when I went to prepare some hot water from the coffee machine for a bag of tea, I had to wash the coffee machine out completely before using as someone had poured coffee grounds into the top water compartment and the cleaning staff either never checked this or decided not to clean it out. During our 4 day stay, although it was a welcome site to see a paint crew and various construction crew working to refurbish rooms, the front desk had no signage alerting guests to the hotel being under construction and we were awaken at 7:30am our first morning to a large construction truck backing into (and beeping) into a parking spot right outside our room - the construction crew then started speaking very loudly, parading loudly up and down the stairs, and banging and scraping the floors in the rooms to either side of ours - all before the hour of 8am. We asked to switch rooms and were accommodated (although the Front Desk attendant seemed confused or incapable of quickly acting upon our request as it took an hour to do so) but that afternoon the paint crew had moved to the side of the property where our new room was and had pressure washed so hard the outside of the building and windows that the molding was hanging off window sills, paint scrapings were everywhere and the carpet just inside our room was wet. Then that afternoon paint crews were priming the outside molding and using a strong smelling primer which was quite pungent so the room windows could not be open. In the new room which according to the front desk had 'just been cleaned', we also found a few spiders and spider webs inside the doorway to our room which we killed and cleaned up. The shower corners near the bathtub had mold and the bathroom floor was quite dirty as if it hadn't been mopped in quite a while. The beds were the only thing in the room that looked like they had been cleaned and changed between stays. Finally as if that was not enough, upon checkout we were informed by management that the room rate we had secured through Pacifica Hotels would not be honored and we were charged an extra $20 per night or approx $80. total (which included taxes) for our four night stay. When we asked why - management informed us that Pacifica Hotel rates were only estimates and the hotel could change the rate. I also inquired as to why the Front Desk had no signage alerting guests as to construction or refurbishment; Management informed me that it was conscience decision not to inform guests because they were worried people would cancel their reservation and it was better in his mind to retain the reservation to keep cash coming in the door no matter what. All in all, our stay was just 'manageable' as we were in the area for both business and pleasure, but certainly it was not the experience we have had with other Moonstone Beach properties in our 25+ years of coming to the area, nor was it the relaxing experience we had been hoping for this time around. We will not be returning to the FogCatcher inn. read more

PS I'been wanting to take my mom a little adventure and while looking through all the hotels came across The Fogcatcher Inn. The moment that I spoke with Greg I knew that we would have a wonderful time there. The hotel is quaint and the location is perfect because it's across the street from the boardwalk at Moonstone Beach. The beds were comfortable and the fireplace made the room feel warm and cozy. I requested an ocean view and since all those rooms were taken he did his best to find me a partial view which was great! My mom had a wonderful time and enjoyed her entire trip, said it was great that each day started and ended in a lovely little quaint hotel located in Cambria. We look forward to going back. We stayed at Fog Catcher Inn for a couple of nights in early November and I have to admit I'm not sure I'll ever choose to stay in land again, maybe I will but there's something so nice about being right on Moonstone beach. With your windows open you can hear the waves crashing and like most everywhere in Cambria the entire vibe is just super peaceful and relaxing. I'm a real sucker for a fireplace in the room, I feel it's always a great touch. Staff were polite and for the most part helpful, we really didn't ask for much. The pool and hot tub are by reservation with a minimum capacity per 90min interval which is pretty standard at places now due to social distancing requirements. We hot tubbed both evenings in the last time slot which was a perfect after dinner option under the stars. There were a couple of raccoons peeking over the wall near the pool each evening but they never came up to formally introduce themselves. I thought I might hear them going through trash bins on the property and near our room at night but I never did. Saw a shooting star one evening from the hot tub, I guess that might be my pro tip: star gaze from there. We read books beside a fire pit with a beach view one of the nights which definitely seems to be the go to spot at every ocean front accommodation in this area for sunset, so we jumped right on that train. We ordered a bottle of wine from the front desk one evening, the selection is very slim so I'd suggest picking up elsewhere. All in all, this was a great option in the area and I'd stay here again. read more

We had a wonderful night stay here! Right across from the office are stairs to enjoy the beach. Beds a VERY comfortable and we are picky! (2 people with back problems).. shower supplies are great and smell so good! The pool was heated so nice! Never experienced that before and jacuzzi had good pressure as well! We celebrated Father's Day on a sat night , and yes we got a lil loud? But not TOO late in the night. Nobody complained. First of all, never trust pictures of a place! The pictures of this place doesn't show properly how old it is and how poor is the maintenance. There was so much dirt in this place we couldn't believe - check picture - that doesn't happen overnight - it takes months to reach all that. If you look at the properties to the left and to the right of the Fog Catcher, everything will make sense. How can someone let this property fall into disrepair? It's an amazing location that must of been something in its heyday. We paid an exorbitant price for an ocean front room. ($636 a night including taxes!) The windows don't all open! There were stains on the rugs, bedding, chairs and walls. The counters were filthy. The shower curtain had black suspicious looking stains. The crumbs on the floor were not even swept up or vacuumed. There was so much dust on the luggage racks that you could write your name. When was the last time you found hair in your refrigerator? If you look above the fireplace in the attached pic, then you'll see a wine glass complete with lipstick around the rim from a previous guest. How can that be missed?? The furniture is dated. Think 1974. The exterior of the complex needs maintenance every where you look. No housekeeping or breakfast. They're still blaming Covid but the prices are insane and do not reflect what you actually get. Our room was filthy. Seriously. Reviews are correct when describing the needs of this business. It has such potential but it looks like the owners are just kicking back and collecting the cash. Again, just look to the left and right and you'll see such nicely kept competing businesses. We stayed 3-31- and 4-1-2021 we originally booked the garden view suite but had received a call from Greg asking if we could change to a king room as they needed the extra bed which was not a problem at all for us and he was very friendly also provided us a bottle of wine for are troubles. They are very dog friendly and we have a large dog so it was helpful. I've stayed at Fog Catcher several times over the past 10 years and I am sad to say that our stay about a month ago will be our last. The beautiful ocean view is still the same, but we won't pay $300 a night for a run down, dirty hotel that is a shadow of what it once was. The hotel is in dire need of a full renovation. The staff wasn't friendly, since we only stayed two nights we didn't get housekeeping, and the fresh baked cookies and breakfast are no longer offered. After our stay, I wrote to Pacifica Hotels and they never bothered to respond so I guess it's safe to say that they aren't going to. It's sad that a former Crown Jewel of Moonstone Beach has turned into this. read more

Checked in 5/15/2020 - We decided to take a little mini vacation to San Francisco, but made the drive interesting, and worth it coming from San Diego. So the Central coast drive it is, all the way up. After looking through Expedia multiple times, Fog Catcher Inn, was our number 1 choice. I read most of the reviews, checked out pictures and was very picky, especially with what's going on right now. Pulled up, wasn't busy, and was greeted by a plexiglass type of window (just like every other place nowadays) behind it was Craig - (I hope I'm right) - He was very energetic, stood up and welcomed us, loved the hospitality! Check in was a breeze, quick and easy. Even bought some stickers and magnets that the says "Moonstone Beach" Our room was nice and clean - Great fireplace, giant TV (bigger than most places) 2 queens beds. Bathroom was nice and clean as well with a great looking vanity and Backlit, floating type mirror. No AC needed as the room didn't have one, just open up the shades and pop the windows and door open and enjoy the sounds and breeze of the ocean, there's a lot of it and it was comforting. The hotels grounds are clean, has a cottage feel, which is amazing. I don't think they are booking at full capacity yet because of the pandemic. Beach is seconds away from the hotel, with benches to sit and relax. They offer a great fire pit area with 5 big chairs, with a great view. If you're feeling up for it, there's a walking path (boardwalk) along the beach that you can enjoy as well. The views are amazing from any angle! Great Hotel! We will be staying here again with the next trip. Feels more like a home away from home. read more

Came here for four nights in early August to meet some friends and get out of the COVID-infested Los Angeles heat. Did some wine tasting, saw some sea elephants, walked on the beach, hung out in Cambria, you know the score :-) The FogCatcher Inn came highly recommended to us and we really enjoyed our stay. That being said, I can't quite give it a five star rating. We enjoyed our nice partial-view room, the fire pits, the pool, and the amazing location. However, the towels were paper-thin and they didn't allow the cleaning staff in the rooms during your stay - they only cleaned the rooms in between guests. Also, I left a book in one of the bedside tables and called them one hour after I left the hotel. I gave them all my info and a description of the book and the front desk assured me they would send me an email with a link to submit a lost and found request. However this never happened. I called them again one week later and they told me the same thing and again, this never happened. I'm really disappointed because that book was a gift and I didn't mean to leave it there. However, a solid four stars and I will return another time :-) read more

We've been staying here every time in Cambria and the room is nice and spacious. Before pandemic a hot breakfast was included; that's ok but what turned me off was the 2 bottles of Fiji brand water in the room at $5 each. (We always bring a gallon to the room. ) why not sell a brand for less $$ like $2 or so? Driving back from dinner was difficult to see cuz there was no light by their sign. We checked in on a partial ocean view room and had a view of parked cars on the street. We got an upgrade for a full ocean view the next day. View was great on the second room. Pros: Location is great, bed was comfortable, they are pet friendly, nice fire pit for colder nights that you can reserve and have only for your party. Little benches around the property as well as picnic areas. Cons: Cleanliness is not a priority. I am a white glove kind of person and even more so now with Covid. From the headboards to the windows, from floors to walls and refrigerator, I cleaned it all. I also saw housekeeping staff not wearing masks and carts left outside unattended for long time. Sadly updating my review. We used to rave about The Fogcatcher and have stayed there probably 8-10 times over the last 5 years. We recently switched to Whitewater and here's why: Condition: While the rates have stated pretty consistently high; usually in the $150 (at best and rare) to $300 range, very little maintenance of the rooms/property has appeared to have taken place. I know that it's frequency of use by travelers is very rough on it but simple things like a touch of paint, replacing broken window blinds and furniture and dirty carpet just hasn't happened. The beds have never been comfortable but their constant use over the years has made them even worse. Our last visit was so frustrating in regards to service and amenities, on top of room condition, we finally gave up. Spa: While the hot tub (one of the main attractions on the cold coastal nights) had been closed for Covid for some time (which we understand), we arrived for our stay in late September to find it still closed-but this time supposedly because of a broken pump part. Yet each employee seemed to have a different answer as to initially, whether the hot tub would be open, then as to why it wasn't open. We walked by the inn again this past week while staying at Whitewater and it was STILL closed. Broken part?? Still? What? Furniture: During our stay in Sept, we wanted to put our clothes away in the provided dresser/tv stand as we had a long stay ahead. No good, as the drawers on the dresser were completely broken. All of them. We called the front desk to ask for a replacement and never received a sorry or a that's too bad or any remark indicating surprise that the piece was totally unusable. Thankfully, a new one would be put in the room while we were out for the day. See drama below. Service: We asked if someone could run the vacuum at the same time as the furniture replacement, as our dog had tracked in some sand and had shed a bit and we just wanted a touch-up for the rest of the stay. We knew that housekeeping was not entering the rooms at all (Bc of Covid? Still? With us gone all day?) but we figured with the room being "exposed" for the furniture issue, someone could vacuum quickly? Absolutely not, we were told. Strict policy, no exceptions-despite the room already being entered by an employee. After some haggling, I was able to get housekeeping to leave the vacuum for me so that I could do it myself, which I did. With a vacuum that hardly worked. Fine, no biggie, but the issue here is that other inns are providing housekeeping services as needed, so it's just a Fog Catcher policy? Or more so a Pacifica policy (the parent company)? Might want to rethink that, given that it's not a city/county/state mandate; just poor service. And we know that exposure to an area where people have BEEN (vs direct person-person exposure) is not a high risk for Covid transmission-if a risk at all. ‍ Breakfast: We used to LOVE the amazing breakfast that FC offered. It was the sweetest, most thoughtful and most economical way to start the day. Yet despite room rates that are as high as they ever were; still no breakfast or even an effort at one since the beginning of Covid. Yet, multiple other inns now offer either a FULL buffet breakfast (Cambria Pines) or breakfast brought to your door (mimosas, coffee and pastries at Whitewater), they remain steadfastly unwilling to offer anything. Just a sign on the breakfast room door basically telling guests to go away, indefinitely, because: Covid. Honestly, it feels like Covid has been a great excuse for the Fog Catcher to stop offering everything that made them special, and they don't really care. And they have no plans to adjust or improve anytime in the future. They have lost loyal 5-year customers in us. Which sucks, because we now have a home in Cambria and will be putting guests up at basically any other inn besides the FC. read more

I'd be happy to help with that. Here's the revised version of the text: The room was acceptable but quite hot, so we had to sleep with the windows open since there was no air conditioning. They advertised breakfast, but when we arrived, they directed us to a continental breakfast place down the street, telling us to mention that we were from Fogcatcher. However, the breakfast turned out not to be included and cost $70 for three people. One of the front desk staff members was kind, but the other seemed to lack customer service training. We had trouble with phone service and connecting to the Wi-Fi, and the front desk staff member was unkind, had a blank attitude, did not care, and was impatient when helping us with the unusual steps. On the positive side, we could hear the sound of waves crashing with the windows open, which was a pleasant surprise. The room was clean, but it took a while for the water to warm up. The beds were very comfortable, and the close proximity to the beach was amazing. The locals were kind and friendly. Overall, the few issues we experienced could have been overlooked if it weren't for the poor customer service from one of the receptionists. With better customer service training, this place could quickly receive a five-star rating. I would advise the management to invest in their staff and teach them to treat paying customers well. Jack at the front desk was very kind and welcoming upon our arrival. Our room was quaint, the location is perfect and there's a heated pool which is a nice plus. Check in and check out were quick and easy. And they allow dogs which our family deeply appreciated! A few minor little things that could be improved upon were the coffee maker - never enough coffee and they don't come by to replenish -- or at least they didn't while we were there -- and the first time we used it, it had not been cleaned from the guest in our room before. That's sort of particularly off-putting, especially when traveling during a pandemic when you want to feel like everything was cleaned and disinfected prior to your arrival and regularly while you're there. A small note - but our room (802) had all of the wires from behind the wall-mounted TV hanging down from behind the TV and it looked pretty janky. If things look janky and aren't clean, it indicates a lack of care to the customer. The hotel itself could use a little facelift on the outside - paint and trim. But overall, it's a very cute place, the staff all seem caring and friendly and the location is fantastic. read more

Very hospitable staff with an amazing view! We were originally in a double queen room, when the gentleman at the front desk offered a complimentary upgrade! The room was spacious with a beautiful view of the ocean. No more than a 2 minute walk to the Moonstone Bar & Grill. The area was clean and well kept, there is a heated pool and jacuzzi, the room was nice; there just seemed to be some pain points housekeeping needs to run over again. You know the old saying, you never get a second chance to make a first impression? Well, FogCatcher lost me at hello, and never recovered. First, they ask me to go online and go through some sort of pre-check-in routine, but the link doesn't work. So we call and all they want is to know when we'll arrive, so they can have the room ready. We say 3:00 pm (the published check-in time), they say no problem, we continue on our merry way. We arrive a couple of minutes after three, but oops, the room's not ready yet. Strike one. But I after a long drive need a restroom, and no, I can't go to the room I've already paid for, no there isn't one by the pool, no, I can't use the one they must have behind reception for the staff because it's staff only. Their suggestion, drive down the road back to the Shell station and use theirs. Strikes two and three (and more if the metaphor could stand it). Not even their sister property down the road, apparently, could accommodate me. So then the up-charged ocean front room. Stained carpets, check. Dirty windows, check. Broken window blinds that can't go all the way up so one can enjoy what little of the ocean view penetrates the filthy windows, check. Window that I have to prop open with a coat hangar from the closet to enjoy the sounds of the ocean since it won't stay open on its own, check. Need I say more? The location may be worth a significant bit of the absurd prices they all charge for the glorified motel rooms along Moonstone, but Fog Catcher certainly didn't do a thing to earn the rest. Lots of others in the neighborhood to spend our money at next time we're up that way. We enjoyed the Fogcatcher! From our quick early and convenient check in with Jeremy to connecting and rapping out with my Clairemont brother Jack, both very helpful and personable individuals; to Pablo, who went above and beyond to find me some creamer for my coffee; we loved the convenience of the property to everything and the close proximity to the beach. If this was a motel that cost $100, then I would have given it 5 stars, but when we are spending +$300/night I expect more. First of all, lobby and/or services are very limited. Had to wait to check in til past 3pm even though we arrived before 1pm. Got txt messages before check in, but if u request anything thru txts there is no response. Rooms only had 1 bottle of toiletries for 2 people on a 2 night-3day stay. Bathroom had sand around all edges when we arrived, no a/c which works well during this time of year and open windows, however all window screens were broken which allow for insects to fly in. Room 404 was very spacious, but unfortunately didn't make up for the full comfort expected at this price point. read more

The room was nice and clean. As always the cleaning crew does amazing. I also appreciated the tall/thin Asian manager. He was very polite and had excellent customer service. I didn't care for the guy with the red hair. I believe he was new. He seemed fake "nice" and dismissive when speaking with my Hispanic family. The main source of heat is the fire place which is turned on by a light switch by the bayhroom. But...they have a small heater in the room. Along with an iron and hair dryer. This is our third time here. The location is great because it's across from the ocean and has a nice boardwalk for taking walks along the ocean. We came for the annual Christmas market and this time we were able to catch a shuttle from the hotel which was great. The only problem we had was we were told by the front desk the shuttle comes every 20 minutes. Well we waited for 2 shuttles to come before we could get on one because they didn't have enough shuttles coming around and they were full due to the high demand of guests from other hotels using the shuttle as well. The morning breakfast is the usual waffles, toast, eggs, sausage, potatoes, oatmeal, coffee and juice. You have to eat by 10:00. read more
