We went to Folks for the first time today. What a great place to hang out. Their baked treats are incredible (didn't get an empanada today, but will next time) and their coffee is great aaaannnnd it is roasted in house. We liked it so much we decided to get some beans to take home with us. We started talking with Tammy about what kind we should get and that turned into her mixing us a special espresso blend to take home. We also bonded a little with her about having moved to Wilmington from Southern California. When you meet owners who are this welcoming and wonderful it really makes you want to go back as often as you can and when their products are as good as Folks' are it makes you want to go back that much more. South American-influenced cafe (where I assume the owners are from) in a residential area of Wilmington with a very local, homey vibe. When I arrived, almost all of the folks in there, a middle-aged, jovial group, were talking with the friendly and smiling woman behind the counter. I instantly felt welcome and at ease. The coffee was good for the area but not great, really what one would expect from your traditional neighborhood cafe that cares about providing high-quality coffee. It is not trying to be a specialty roaster or that new third-wave coffee shop serving exotic pour overs and made-from-scratch croissants. What it does do, however -- providing a range of roasts (all organic or free trade), espresso drinks, and food options (mostly sandwiches I believe) -- it does very well. The space, while small, was comfortable and homey with the perfect ambience to sit down and read a book, meet with a friend, or get some work done. Overall, Folks is a unique neighborhood café near to Downtown Wilmington that really cares about its coffee and, most importantly, all of the guests that walk through its doors. read more

Man, if Folks Cafe was open later than 2:00 I would never leave! It's a deeply charming, quirky, intimate place. The menu changes regularly, and you can always trust them to have some kind of new and delicious specials. Just order them, whatever they are. You won't regret it. I still dream fondly of the Ecuadorian pork sandwich. The owners are so exceptionally warm and welcoming, and if they see you once they seem to remember you forever and give you an excited welcome and hug when you walk in. I first want to start off by saying I never review anything on here but after this experience I couldn't help myself. I walked in this morning to get an iced coffee and both of the owners had helped me. They were very friendly and welcoming. I waited no more than 5 minutes for my coffee and when I went to pay they said it was on the house because "I had waited too long." And I swear it had only been just a few minutes. My husband and I were complimenting the coffee served at Camellia Cottage Bed and Breakfast in Wilmington where we vacationed. The coffee was earthy and smooth and exactly what you crave for in a coffee. Folks Cafe, just a few blocks away is the company they use, and have brought together two things that my husband and I love: locally roasted coffee and empanadas. We had to check it out. The owners are Argentinian and Ecuadorian. My husband is Colombian and since nothing compares to his mamas empanadas, we are always up for trying new things. It's exterior is deceiving, but as any hidden gems usually are, this looked promising. The staff was so delightful and welcoming. Juan served us the special, a dulce de leche frappe. It was yummy. We actually waited for the empanadas to be ready, and glad that we did. They were baked (not fried-like we are used to) in a crispy dough, we tried the chicken and beef. Hot and steamy, tender meat flavored just right. And the chimichuri sauce, w.o.w. I'd love to eat that on some crusty bread, alone! It was that good. I've just recently stumbled upon Folk's newest location on N.4th street in the Brooklyn Arts District and was very excitedly greeted by the owner who made my coffee and croissant himself! I mentioned that I had met him where I work at the ReStore on the other end of downtown and he walked me around the whole building showing me everything he had bought from the ReStore to build his new location. Not only do they make a fantastic cup of coffee (beans roasted in house) BUT he is charitable! While I was there, there was a Spanish club meeting and I got to practice my skills a tiny bit. They meet every other Saturday and the owner encouraged me to join and reassured me my Spanish wasn't as bad as I thought. He and his wife are just lovely and really fun people to talk to! I came to town recently and the first business I go to in Wilmington is Folks Cafe. As soon as I walk in, after not being there for nearly 7 years, is one of the owners, Tammy, giving me a warm welcome back, somehow remembering me! I then ordered one of their delicious corn empanadas to have with a cappuccino and everything was perfect. I stayed in the cafe for a bit to enjoy my drink and snack, and read in peace. Ok, so don't let the outside fool you, this place is a gem! We stumbled here based on the reviews, well trust them. Family owned and operated, fresh to the table, homemade and heart felt dishes. We had the omelette with sausage, (comes as soufflé, super beautiful), veggie scramble, coffee all around and tried their dulce de leche treat...first of all the dishes were tasty, each of them, they serve salsa which is great in the eggs, plenty of cheese, woah my goodness the baked good was amazing! Shortbread-esque with the smooth, sweet layering of the dulce de leche cream between and toasted coconut around. There were regulars there, a combo of people from all walks of life. We got to pick out our own mugs, practice Spanish with the owner (she's from Argentina) and smelled/witnessed the homemade Empeñadas coming out of the oven.
